My recipe for success in below zero 7.3 starting is early in the fall I check and make sure glow plugs and batteries are up to par. Then in November it gets Rotella 5w-40 t6 and new fuel filter. Get the hi torque starter ( been on for years) and when I know the temperature is going to drop below zero I make sure my tank is full and give it a good dose of anti gel. Finally wait at least 30 seconds after the wait to start light goes out and then I crank it up. I have used this technique down to 20 below and it has never failed to start. Below that I couldn't tell you that is the coldest temp my 7.3's have ever experienced. By the way- nice truck

Jim great recipe for success!!! next fall ill deff put 5w-40 t6 in both rigs. theres 15w-40 t6 in them now. not to long ago i found out about the high torque starter thats on the list . im with you we get straight #1 in our area in september and thats all i fill them up with till deep spring . some times if im hauling for the day i might put #2 in while shes running but the last fill up of the day will be all #1 and some honey . hope your having a very nice slow weekend and thank you for watching .

@@mrsmel269 low to mid 90s today, 😂😂, thankfully we’re actually having quite a mild summer this year.
The -10C experience was back in the 70s and our training commander thought it a good idea for a 40 mile overnighter 20 miles out to the bottom of the snowfields, with tropical kit mind you mind you. Expecting 0, but got -10, 😂😂. And those temps would almost have you guys out in t-shirt & flip flops, 🤣🤣.

Cold ain't no joke. When he was living and doing some logging my Dad left the John Deere skidder in the woods one time and the temps dropped. He took a roll of TP and soaked it in rubbing alcohol, lit it and put it under the block. Draped a tarp over the whole machine and waited about an hour. Got it started and got a full days work in. Ole man was crafty he was.

If you turn the key on and walk away for about 20 minutes , the glow plugs will time out and go cold . At that point a shot of ether will kick it off
Do not use ether with hot glow plugs.... big bad things can happen !

Good video. Very nice looking truck for its age. They must not use much salt on your roads? I have a small 3-cylinder Kubota diesel that would never start in your weather (no heater). Even at 32F with the glow plugs it starts on one cylinder, then two and finally all three fire, but with lots of smoke. Stay warm. Thanks for sharing and take care.

    • @mrsmel269

Bobcat thank you we love her. We got her used so not sure what part of the country shes really from but yes our area uses more sand on the roads. (had to look it up lol) some time down the road you should start your Kubota up Bobcat ;-) thank you for watching and enjoy the day

@@mrsmel269 I should set the camera up and start the old Kubota and see what happens. Back in the day when I was a kid the road folks used ash and slag that came for the Youngstown steel mills on the roads. I think that was also hard on the cars in regard to rust. Take care.

Have all the sleds ready to go and think I'll just leave them be - would hate to tear something up this close to mountain time. (either a sled or myself - ha). WD #2 is about 10f #1 what I seen was about -20f in late Sept early Oct they start rolling out #1 so I just use that intill spring in both the dump truck and the pick up with a little bit of howes or diesel treat . cost of doing business . In 06 when I got my first diesel i had it start to gel up a little and after that I just fill up with #1 lol. I always research the area to find the stations that sell #1 before I roll some where :-( lol . I dont want to be down. I hope the day is starting out good and thank you for watching.

3 things... 1st off, if that was my '02 5.9 Cummins, I'd be at the store already buying beer after it started on the third turn (like it does whether its minus 17 or 71 above) 2nd, leave the key on that 7.3 for a LOT longer before you try to start it, the glow plugs stay on even after the wait to start light goes off in the dash. And 3rd, I've got an '02 7.3 and it starts like shit in the cold !

7.3L......WOW! That is a very cool 1999 truck you have. What year did the idea and implementation of diesel exhaust fluid come around? Our 2018 ambulances practically run on that DEF garbage.

Too cold for a diesel without being plugged in, as you know obviously you dod it for the video, but man iv seen oil and these things become literal gel in the cold and at warmer temps at that!
