These are the two engines I was looking at when I bought my diesel truck. I ended up picking the 7.3 powerstroke due to the truck having a crew cab for the family, and it had the ZF6 transmission. I have 433,000 miles on the truck now and it is still running strong.
@@8020Media I’m getting ready to take my “02 7.3 Powerstroke Crew cab to Banks so that they can do all of the upgrades. May I have your thoughts, please???
Every man loves what runs at that current moment in time and take them work for bidonomics . I guess pull the v10s back out boys 💪they ran good also for a few miles at a time .
I owned a 2003 dodge first. Used to work for a transportation company and would use my own truck to pull because I got paid extra to do it. Including trailer I would pull anywhere from 5000-roughly 10,000 pounds give or take. After I enlisted I bought a bunch of other trucks. Didn't own a diesel again till I bought a 3.0 duramax which was a POS. Fuel economy was great but damn thing couldn't pull a little red wagon without bogging down and chewing through my entire DEF tank in 5 minutes. I started looking for a 7.3 about 2 years a go and picked up a 2000 F-250 with 160k miles on it. My old man recommended the 7.3 because as much as I loved the Cummins I hated the Dodge. Absolutely love this truck. But it takes some getting used to. It can tow anything but you have to be prepared for the fact that its gunna scream while doing it. It's a bit jarring to go from 1600-2000 rpms on the cummins to 2500+ on the 7.3 Very much feels like the 7.3 works harder to make the same power but I think thats just the design difference. Because at those RPMs my new 7.3 would run my old dodge into the dirt with the same loads. Its so weird.
ive owned all three (12v, 24v, and 7.3) its not ford vs dodge, it is how the owners before you cared for the truck. if I had to pick one it would be the best taken care of engine.
Cummins guys will 100% tell you that you made a mistake buying the ford, the snobby elitism is crazy when it comes to those motors. The funny thing is that they somehow forget that the 5.9 is just as slow as the 7.3 from factory
Exactly. they act like they come 500hp from the factory. stock for stock ive beat a 94 2500 12v reg cab with a 97 ext cab 7.3 auto both auto and 4x4. both gutless compared to anything modern lol
The 53 block problems were not on the old P Pump 5.9's and the 7.3's are now having problems with the electronics because they are getting old and failing on most all the 7.3's and the motors are just more complex with more to go wrong. The Ford cab is made better than the Dodge so overall the Ford is a better truck but the 5.9 old model motor is a god bit better than the 7.3 period...
There is no comparison, The 7.3 piped sounds great and it has a little broader power curve plus it has glow plugs which is more to go wrong but works better when real cold. The 5.9 P PUMP just stomps it other than those factors... Way better fuel mileage, way more power with little tweaking, 5.9 way easier to work on, way less to go wrong. The P PUMP injection system is way better than any of the electronic crap expensive hard to fix injection shit.
Bullshit. ive been around a few 5.9s with less then stellar cold starts when my 95 when my 7.3 started better. same with fuel mileage. You cant tune on the fly with a 12v. nor have a high idle unless you physically mount a control knob. 7.3s are cheap to maintain and parts aren't that expensive unless you buying injectors. No stupid killer down pin either. 5.9s also cant single spool large turbos worth a damn either.
This guy is very biased. I have owned just about everything EXCEPT FOR A 6.4, so when I say stock for stock every year duramax out tows any other of the big three, believe me. Sure gm trucks aren’t very spacious and the bodies don’t last as well in a work truck application, but year for year the duramax trucks have pulled much easier. Tuned, that’s a different story I have no clue. I used them as a tool, not a play thing.
My brother in Christ, this video is based on motors before the duramax was even a thing. The gm competition through the 90s were the 6.2 and 6.5 Detroits, both couldn’t hold a candle to the two being compared here.
every engine has its faults, but these two are among the best for sure. Good content
C - Well said! We agree. Thanks for the feedback.

Both great motors.
Jeff - Completely agree!
@@8020Media BTW, the 2000 Dodge 2500 V10 4WD pickup was sold by the time I got back to Nevada. I think chatted about this last month.
Jeff - Thanks for sharing this update. Sorry to hear.
I’ll take any of those two over all this new junk. These two old kings will never let you down while the others sit in the shop
K- So true!
I have a 7.3 in my ‘97 E350 Club Wagon. Some say the engine was de-rated for van duty, I don’t know why that would be, but is that true?
S - Certainly sounds possible!
What do you think about the automatic transmission on the 7.3? Thank you
Matthew - We have a 7.3 and love it. It all depends on what you are wanting to do with it. But it has been great for us.
I own multiple of each and they both have their places if I want to haul heavy load ford is the go to if i want fuel efficiency ill take the ram
Happy - Completely agree. Thanks for adding this insight!

Cummins 12 valve all day
F - Also a great engine!
I’ll stick to my v10 magnum lmao
Sasquatch - Everyone has their own opinions. A V10 Magnum over these two engines is quite bold, but to each their own!
I had one and I pulled parts from my v10 to build my Cummins
