    I remember trying to clear the snow in 1960. Only consolation was a tot of rum. At the end. Many happy days in ATC
    and still in contact with two mates from 1960/1. Great posting. Includes 4 months at Jever when runway was extended. Cheers pop

    Blimey I was on VC10's in the 1980's as well and we were sent on detachment to 'Wunsdorf' Luftwaffe base when Guts runway was being resurfaced We went to the local town 'Neustadt' I think and pulled a group of Frauleins who wanted to learn English and we spent the night strengthening relations between our 2 nations..... and a good time was had by all!!! :))) Could never beat a 10 Sqn 'Tendet'!!

    I was stationed there from 1979 to 1981 with the Air Movements Sqn. Loved my posting to Gutersloh. Shame the state the place is in now.

    Used to fly in and out of Gutersloh in the 1980s on the RAF VC10s staying down town. It was a good night stop.
    Sadly both airfield and aircraft are no more.

    wäre toll wenn man auch auf die deutsche geschichte des platzes eingehen würde, nicht nur auf die englische.

      Die Briten schei... auf uns seit 1919. Besatzungstruppen halt. Wird Zeit das die alle verschwinden. Natürlich bitten wir dass die heimgehen. Genauso wie die Amerikaner.

    My dad was stationed there in 1969/70 with 92 squadron.. We lived in Blankenhagen... I feel like crying looking at this.. 😢

      My dad was stationed at RAF Gutersloh 75/79 18 Sqdn (Wessex helicopters). We saw the Lightnings replaced by Harriers. So no more sonic booms sitting on our balcony in Blankenhagen when they did circuits & bumps. It also makes me sad to see what has happened to a once great place. Still it started to go downhill when the Pongos took over!

      @@mickeydiver17 we lived in a blue balconied flat... Flat 3 in Block 8.. They've been demolished my brother told me. He toured the area a few years ago.. I've never lost the habit of falling asleep when the boys are out on night sorties! Once a RAF BRAT, always a RAF BRAT! Even though I'm now 59!

      @lynda dent Yeah I know the feeling, once a ScaleE always a ScaleE (so called because married blokes with kids were on Pay Scale E). I also lived in the same type of flat on Rudoltstadterweg (or something like that) Flat 6 Block 11, a top floor job. I worked for Gloria Werke in Harsewinkel but all my mates worked for "The SWO's Commando's". Last I heard Gloria's was a printing place of all things. Did you also have the joy of attending King's School at the Army Barracks Manser (phonetic spelling) Barracks? I still miss the good times of Dad being in the RAF & never knowing where you would end up next, "Through The Sky To The Stars" ie Per Ardua Ad Astra"! From 1 RAF BRAT to another lol :- )

      @@mickeydiver17 I went to Haig school.. I remember my dad coming home once saying we had 6 hours to pack! Not being able to sleep when back in England because the "skies were too quiet".... People who aren't RAF BRATS will never understand!

    • @mickeydiver17
      @mickeydiver17 5 років тому

      @lynda dent I know just what you mean. One of dad's postings was to RAF Wittering & we had Victor bombers & they did 2am practice take offs with klaxons blaring on every street corner wow! Then off to RAF Seletar in Singapore. Mind you dads last posting was RAF St Athens in Wales & that was the pits. But then I was lucky dad was in the RAF when you could end up just about anywhere in the world, guess it would be pretty boring these days at least for RAF BRATS like us hey? At least we got to move around but my sister got sent off to boarding school in Abbingdon & she hated every minute of it. hehehe :- )

    Although based at Gut in the early 80's i can say without a doubt it was a horrible posting for me and i couldn't to get back to the UK but seeing this reel of film does make me think what a waste of a good resource.
