  • Potty training your dog can be a frustrating task but patience and consistency can be great tools for a better potty training experience.
    Training Tips:
    1) When you take your dog out to go to potty try taking them to the same spot.
    This will help teach your dog that this is where they should go. After they do go, be sure to give them lots of praise and love to let them know they did a good thing.
    2) Refrain from using pee pads they can be confusing to your dog.
    Pee pads may lead to them peeing on the carpet or blankets. You should always make time to take them outside because you want to teach them to only go outside.
    3) Puppy crates are a positive thing for your dog; it is like their room or den. It is their space!
    Refrain from using the crate as a way to punish your pet. When they are in the crate be attentive to your dog watch for warning signs that they need to go out.
    4) Accidents Happen! You should only scold or punish them if you catch them in the act.
    Punishing your dog afterwards or rubbing their nose in their mess can be very confusing for your dog.
    If you follow these tips you should be on your way to having a potty trained pup in 7 days!

    Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!

    He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

      It’s because training a puppy is literally a full-time job. If you or someone in the house can’t be around to let him out every 2 hours, you shouldn’t get a puppy. Maybe adopt an adult dog instead who is already housetrained. Not saying this to be mean, just being honest. We got a puppy 6 months ago and only because someone could be in the house to watch him most of the day.

    After reading the comments, I have re-lost my faith in humanity. Y'all need to watch A LOT more videos. And next time, do it BEFORE buying a dog. Dogs aren't robots. Training a puppy is a 24/7 endeavor. Owning a dog is more responsiblility than most people can handle. If you don't enjoy responsibility, diligence, consistency, and working hard, you are not meant to have a dog. Get a fish instead.

      I had a dog that was so stubborn and kept peeing and pooping on the same spot in my house. He had a surgery which I had to keep him confined so I got a crate. After 1 week, he was fully potty trained. He would tell me when he needed to go outside. But I suppose it's different with every dog because I had a yorkie and 9 months later and I was still going at it.

    • @alexisnagy8942

      In a week with consistency, most puppies know the routine. However they cannot be trusted with free reign after one week, these titles are very deceiving. It takes 3 to 6 months for big breed dogs to be trusted for up to 3 hours in the house while you are home knowing they won’t potty inside. It takes a year to 2 years to give a small breed puppy that kind of freedom because they metabolize so quickly and idk why, but they just take so much longer to potty train. It gets easier and the work you out in pays off. However, like with everything, you get what you put into it. This is only in my experiences btw. I have owned And fostered many puppies and dogs.

    In the beginning especially with puppies take your dog outside every hour for a couple of weeks and expand on that.
    It will help to create a routine. A schedule with feedings and set times for taking your dog out to the bathroom. Make it a routine right when you wake up to take the puppy outside, after meals, after lots of play and before bed.

About the crate - she's just explaining the use of proper sized crates. As you can see later in the video the divider wall isn't present anymore. Crates are the best things a dog could have and it's the only place he/she can relax and feel comfortable + keep out of trouble!

    I get the feeling this girl doesnt train dogs/puppies often. A lot of what she said didnt really make sense. And that divider in the crate made the space too small. But i hope she was just using it to show everyone how it worked. And Even though I understand that crates can be helpful for dogs and puppies, I still feel bad when they use them. I just got a 9 week old toy poodle and she has the whole bathroom to call her own lol. We just make sure there's nothing on floor and she has her bed and puppy pads on the ground along with a couple toys. And since we have a 2 year old son, we just use his baby gate in the doorway so she stays in the bathroom without feeling too lonely. I even have a couple of the battery operated candles for at night so she isn't scared.

    • @cass9321
      @cass9321 9 років тому +3

      Christy Marie This girl has an idea but def does not have the full picture. She speaks as if this will work on all breeds when it in fact wouldn't. Maybe if you have a German Shepard or a Pitbull (easiest dogs to train) then maybe but there are other breeds that are known to be harder to potty train, some take 2 weeks and some can take 2 months. She's right about being consistent and taking them out to the same spot but that would def not train every dog that fast lol.
      She didn't even go over the fact that if you don't have your dog outside a bit longer AFTER they do their business taking them out again could be hard since a lot of dogs will figure out "hey, every time I pee, I go back in!" and will end up holding their pee in since they don't want to right inside after they take care of their business.
      And good on you! baby gates are amazing for training

    • @FarisJaclyn
      @FarisJaclyn 9 років тому +17

      Hi, I read all the comments so when you refer to this girl you're talking to me. Yes, I'm showing people just how it works with the crate. The camera's shot makes the crate look smaller than it is. My dog (Bueller) was only in the crate for this one shot. I'm excited that your 9 week old dog is potty trained but that's not the case for everyone. I'm talking to a camera without a script infront of 30 people so some of my wording isn't perfect. I don't understand how you can 'get a feeling' I don't train often by just a 3 minute video. During when this video was shot I taught a group puppy class weekly. I have a degree in animal science and I trained (At that time) for a few years. I've loved and studied animals my entire life. If you'd like more examples of my dog training see my main channel with the link on my name.

      Faris Jaclyn Hello Faris we had a dog that we crate trained and for over 9 years she had no problem in the crate when unsupervised and she liked going in the crate very much . She was also potty trained in a certain area in the yard too. Im a professional carpet cleaner and probably had to only clean up a mess in my home 3 or 4 times in 9 years once she was trained . I have cleaned many homes with extensive urine stains and mainly because they let the dog run free in the house or a room. The people who crate trained and potty trained correctly had little or no stains at all . I do agree with your crate training method and the example of the divider depending on size of dog. Also the crate isn't supposed to be used like a 24 hour thing just for times when the dog cannot be supervised.

      +Christy Marie You're raising a puppy, not a child. Because you feel "badly" when owners use their crates to train their dogs, doesn't take away from the fact that having a den, or confined area in which the dog can feel safe and secure is actually something the dog craves. In nature, a dog uses their den to hide from danger, sleep, and raise their young. The video was spot on, and every point she made was absolutely valid. Pet owners have a bad habit of over-privileging their dogs and treat them like children (giving them their own room and putting their beds next to their pads is 100% the wrong approach -- dogs do not like to soil close to their bedding, as it is the same to them as soiling in their dens; a big no-no in the canine world). Educate yourself before you spread misinformation to other, like-minded viewers who will inadvertently raise dogs that aren't well adapted to a normal canine lifestyle.

    may be you should try putting yourself in a crate where you can barely move in and call it ur den . whats the harm in giving your puppy a big crate ?

    • @Herbus18
      @Herbus18 10 років тому +60

      Sameer Ali If the crate is too large the puppy might sleep towards the back, but when they have to pee or poop they might do it in the front or vice versa. Using a divider prevents them from doing so, because dogs, young or old usually will not pee or poop in the exact same spot they sleep. Hope that helps.

    • @Aslerii
      @Aslerii 10 років тому +47

      Your dogs crate should be only big enough for him to stand lay down and turn around. If the crate is any bigger he will pick a "potty spot" and just set back your house training even further. Please do research before commenting rude things.

      Jordan Freed you may be right . unfortunately in this video the lady is talking about a small puppy but the dog in this example is i think a good 5 - 6 months old there is mismatch. i did bring a bullmastiff 8 week puppy home what i did is i created a small box of sand and taught him to go pee there at night his crate was always open . even i could sleep thru the night and so could he . eventually as he grow older i started taking him out at regular intervals and the sand box was removed and so was the crate( it was made for a puppy )

    • @Aslerii
      @Aslerii 10 років тому +7

      Sameer Ali Crate training doesn't have an age or size limit. Although the crate she used in this video is too small and she should move the divider back the information shes giving is still correct. When i rescued my English mastiff who had never seen an inside of a home before and was only comfortable inside his crate i taught him through crate training. I'm also house training my retired greyhound this way. I've never heard of using a sandbox as a house training method and my opinion is that for a lot of dogs the transition from there to outside can be confusing and sometimes hard. But i also have an opinion that you should use whatever method works the best for your specific dog.

We are geting a puppy this week, but not sure if the crate should be in the bedroom at the beginning and then in the living room later on? Would the dog be confused by that? And would it be a bad thing to buy a different crate after a few weeks? thanx!

      It really depends on the dog. Don't criticize humane and effective methods of training. New dogs need to be in a crate to keep from damaging the home or injuring themselves. You need to trust your dog in order to let them have free rein. I have had 2 dogs in the past and both had free rein of my house. I'm getting a puppy tomorrow and he is going to be in the crate during the night. Dogs aren't allowed to stay in a crate for more than six hours. It really is a personal thing. It's trust in your dog and some haven't bonded enough to have full trust.

      Like she said, a crate can act as a room for the puppy. Though I'm not sure why she had to put the divider in?

      +Harjot Singh If you give a puppy who is potty training too much room in their crate, they will go to the bathroom in it. Dogs naturally don't spoil the place they sleep in so by keeping the divider in and spacing it out as the puppy grows the dog wont pee in it. Although I did find that divider to be excessively small, they are suppose to be able to turn around with ease.

      Sounds like, if you haven’t done so already, you will need to do separation training. Start by putting her in a room or crate and leaving the room. Start at 2 minutes and come back. Do this multiple times a days until she doesn’t cry anymore. Then increase to 5 minutes, then ten minutes. And keep increasing the time. This will teach that you will be coming back. Giving a designated crate or small area can make them feel safe and secure too. I cover my puppies with a sheet. They like it better that way and they sleep better and so do I. I have done this in the past with many puppies or dogs I have fostered and it works like magic. I have heard also of some getting womb bears or putting in a clock that ticks. I haven’t tried it but it’s worth a shot if it offers comfort and your peace of mind lol

    This comment was written as constructive criticism and includes more and corrected information for all who read it.
    I understand the point of this video and some things I do agree with, but the information you gave about the crate, crates in general, and pee-pee pads is incorrect. That specific crate for that type of dog breed is too small to house that dog for long periods of time, especially with the divider. Now I did think that maybe you were just using it as an example, but then you had said that it was even too big for a puppy and that's where I knew you were serious about having that current dog in there and that is just too small. Of course, it does depend on the breed and the age of the puppy to determine the size of the crate that it is held in. The crate in the video is a good size for that specific dog if it is only held there temporarily. Possibly at night when you are sleeping and you don't want it going off on his own. As for potty training, it's good if it is being supervised. Like you said, look at the signs of the dog/puppy wanting to get out or sniff around to find a place to pee, then take the puppy outside to pee in its spot. If the puppy is going to be unsupervised for a long period of time, then it does need a bigger crate and it should have a pee-pee pad in the crate with it. If not, then you will have more of a mess to pick up and that just reinforces the puppy to pee wherever and whenever they need to go. That is why pee pads when made, to give puppies and dogs a designated spot to pee on when they are unable to go outside. If the puppy is peeing on the floor or carpet then that is just an accident and accidents will happen. Training must be consistent and monitored. Now, if you are trying to make the crate a pleasant place for them, only put them there for a few hours and maybe at night. No amount of toys are going to make the puppy happy in there if they are locked up for hours on end while it rolls around in its own mess. There is a better method for keeping a puppy or dog in a secluded area with a crate. Look online to find the correct size of a crate and connecting gate pieces for a corral with access to the crate. This in turn gives the puppy a place to sleep, a place for a pee pad (if not potty trained yet or in the house for too long), and plenty of space to play. Puppy pens can be expensive so you can always look up to buy the fencing or individual gate pieces and fit them together with zip ties. I've made one before and there are plenty of how-to videos on UA-cam. You had also mentioned in another comment that you have a degree in Animal Science and you have been training for some time. I too have a degree and have trained animals and have experience breeding and taking care of plenty of puppies. I know its hard to take criticism from people that you think have no idea what they are talking about or have no experience, but if they are mostly all saying the same thing then maybe take that into account. People dont have to be "experts" to know a thing or two about the care of animals. That is something that a lot of people just learn from experience. Next time, try to take the high road and don't reply childish comments like "Lol" and "Burn", to name a few or your responses to people in this feed.

    Having real trouble with my new pup, I've had him almost 3 weeks and he's changed his mind from outside dog first week, to inside dog last two. He refuses to go outside now, nothing has changed other than he knows he loves cold AC. He just stays in one spot when I try and get him toward the doors. Whether on leash, on harness, no leash, no harness etc. I'm being very reassuring and haven't scolded him from relieving himself, other than a stern no and petting his nose close when it's happened the 3 times. I should note at 7 months he's already 75lbs and 29" at the shoulders. He is a white Anatolian with legs for days and little coordination yet. Just trying to figure out how to teach him to go out the dog door, he'll run as fast as he can through it from outside, but won't go near it inside(he did the first week when he wasn't used to being in a house yet) he used it for the first four or more days, then stopped once he settled in a hallway he likes, a lot! . Any suggestions really appreciated. PS he has zero interest on going for walks, just digs his massive paws in and looks at me like I'm stupid and crazy:) even variety of treats have zero effect, from peanut butter to hot dog, he's no sucker I'll give him that:)

    Ok so I’m no dog trainer but, the divider in that crate was put to close. The puppy had barely any room to move around, I hope he wasn’t like that for too long.

    This is why I prefer cats. All they need is a litter box, no training, no praising, no whining.

    At 8 weeks a puppy can't hold his bladder how does it 'tell' you that it needs to go out?

    • @NamiNuitsuki
      @NamiNuitsuki 8 років тому

      Some dogs circle a certain area or sniff at the ground. That tells you they need to pee urgently. It can be hard to tell, though with some dogs. Some may hunch over in a pee or poop position to alert you.
