Its’s been a while since we removed the bags and installed springs on our GX470. Here is a quick update! This way I barely got the whole thing in without having to disconnect the sway bar. Rides so much better. Thank you and subscribed!!
Thanks for the video I have a 2009 gx470 everything went smooth and you do have to unscrew the sway bar no matter what. I went with just the springs due to the tight snug fit. This video saved me thousands, it took me about 2hrs due to the fact that I manually unscrewed everything including rims. I purchased the springs for $132 and a pair of jack stands for $67 I had everything else to do the job. Thank you once again!!
Glad it helped! This is what I love to hear, we absolutely enjoy hearing from people that our content has helped! Glad you saved a bunch of $$$ as well, you can save that cash or do some cool mods! Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing! 💯
I replaced my shocks first then went with the spring conversion at a later date. I was able to install the springs by removing the bottom shock bolts on both sides. I then had a helper step on the side I needed clearance on to insert the spring And it was just enough clearance to pop it in. This is of course with standard mounting hardware, not the base parts that were used on this build.
AWESOME job you two! just bought an 06 today and was worried about the whole air system replacement. I don't think I have a big air leak but it won't stay in high. I am totally doing this exact coil changeover as soon as possible! Thanks, you made it look easy!
@@timesofyourlife1 I went with the Eibach kit which gives 2-3 inch lift. I was able to do the rear myself but the front struts weren't assembled so I don't have them in yet. I had family get sick and that was more important. I'm in Mexico now and will get everything finished when I get home. CHEERS!
About to do this with a Dobinsons conversion kit for my 08. Definitely had the same problems with one of the air bags failing. Looking forward to the upgrade
Just did this with the same springs. Thanks to this video, I saved the extra money because they did, in fact, come with the lower isolators. I am really thankful for the video. It helped a lot.
Thx Bro you’re describing all the same problems I’m having with my recently purchased 05 GX 470. So I’m going to follow suite with your repair to the T. Thx again & keep rocking.
I used this video along with another from Metal Tech. Just taking off the bottom bolt on the shock was much better than trying to remove the top bolt. I ended up replacing the shocks too, they were very tired. Anyway, thanks for the vid.
I just competed this with the metal tech 4x4 spring kit. I did not cut the bump stops I have no issues. The kit was $400 with $100 shipping (HI). Highly recommend this conversion. Super easy to do.
You made it easy to do, especially in placing the hydraulic jack and the stands you're an inspiration doing DIY, keep those videos coming peace from California.
I hate it...hate with hateful hate when people edit the fiddly bits of teardown. In your case, the tab removal... We need to see everything in this stuff. Sighed: mechanically tone deaf. I'm lucky to not break things when fixing others because of 'gotchas' everyone takes for granted. That said, you are a very good instructor.
I have the exact same year/color GX and just bought the IronMan 4x4 lift kit and air delete. I'm excited for it to come and get rid of those pesky bags. Great video, thanks.
Def do the install with a metal tech type of base (Or another brand like Ironman 4x4), you did good with it. I have installed hundreds of the airbag deletes.
Thank you for the compliment however, I’m not certain you watched the video. There are many shots where you can clearly see the jack stands. Thank you for watching commenting and subscribing!
Thankyou so much for this video, in Australia your model car it a Landcruiser Prado Grande 120, we are doing the same conversion, but raising it 2" and new shock absorbers as well...
Awesome job!! Just did this on my wife's gx. Your video was very helpful, especially with what fuses to pull. Ordering the button delete now. Thank you for taking the time to create.
Excellent DIY vid, My wife's favourite all time vehicle. It's a 2004 still rides like new. The suspension air pump is about to go we were told as the rust has gotten to it. I can use it if you still have it. But realistically doing this mod is the way to go. Now if we could only get rid of the VSC & Engine light on...
Added this to the strut master video, which I used in addition to yours. Thanks for the help on pulling fuses. A couple of points: the existing strut nuts should be soaked as early in advance with PB. Having a strap wrench was mandatory to remove the existing struts. Extra information about getting the compressed springs into place with spring compressors on them, and in an orientation where you can remove them after they’re in place would have been very helpful. I started around 9am and finished this job at 7pm - if you’re not solid with doing car work, find a mechanic in advance that will install parts they didn’t supply. I could only find one Toy-Lexus mechanic in Denver Colorado who would install and he was booked out for 3 weeks. Decided to do it myself with a buddy. Love the ride, it feels like a massive improvement, but the instructions seemed to gloss over some of the hardest items.
Awesome glad the video helped you get the job done! Our GX has been in GA it’s whole life so we didn’t have to fight any rusted or stuck bolts. Getting the springs on wasn’t difficult for us either even with the metal tech kit. My wife just pressed down on the axel until I got them into position. With out the metal tech kit they would’ve just fit right in on our GX. Thanks for watching and commenting we appreciate it!
@@KRTLyfe Hi - I'm putting in OME springs with 2" lift and don't want to have to use a spring compression. Which part of the sway bar did you take off in order to be able to drop the axle far enough down to be able to get your spring in. Thanks for the great video!
@@safarila1 I’m trying to recall with out rewatching my video. From what I remember you have to disconnect the shocks. Then I had my wife stand on the axel while I put the spring in place. The springs you are installing might take a little more effort. It might be worth your while to utilize a spring compressor.
Nice video thanks for posting! The feeling of getting hit from behind is from the yoke of the rear driveshaft. I got the new driveshaft (Lexus said they’ve redesigned it like 10 times for this vehicle) and the car drives like a new Lexus fresh off the lot.
Thank you for your comment and watching our video. So I've read countless threads on I8mud, the Lexus and Toyota forums, reddit etc about this knock. I was going to go in that direction and get the drive shaft and bearings etc changed. My GX was doing it really bad at every single stop light some times multiple times. Since I've changed my suspension it hasn't done it a single time. It's been several months now of daily driving and multiple road trips to the mountains in our GX. We haven't had one bump since. Maybe there are multiple causes. If it resurfaces I will make sure everyone knows and I will make a vlog about it. Thank you again for your contribution!
@@KRTLyfe Whoa!!! I have read all over and you are the first to state your problem that is exactly like mine. Not the typical driveline clunk where it bumps when stopping and moving again, I don't have that. I have what you had. Multiple bumps when stopped. Heck, it even does it when the car is off and has been sitting for a few minutes. Have you learned anything else about it?
Thanks for sharing. This is one of the fears of mine about getting a Lexus or Landcruiser with the Air Suspension System. Great work ! Really appreciate the video. You'll helped me out a lot. People like you'll make UA-cam a Goldmine. Semper Fi

thanks for video:) i just ordered mine ! after fighting with air susp i said no ! :) too late.. I already changed air compressor ( its behind rear bumper behind driver rear wheel splash) height sensors and struts... at least i will reuse struts :) thanks for help !
That "bump" sensation you're describing is common on 4th gen 4Runner and 1st Gen GX470 120 platform. It's the drive shaft slip yoke. It needs to be greased. When you stop the axle and suspension load up against the yoke. When you release the brake or the yoke gets enough tension and then releases, you get the clunk or bump sensation. It's coming through the driveline. There are zerks to lube the driveshafts and there are many different arguments on what type of grease should be used for specific zerks. Go by the manufacturers recommended grease types of read up on what people are using to help stop their clunks.
Tickle Fingers yeah I read all that on the forums etc before I changed my bags out. A lot of people seemed to say the bump came back after greasing. Immediately after changing to springs ours hasn’t done it not once. Which leads me to believe the bump was coming from the vehicle trying to correct its ride height, since my driver side was leaking so bad mine was doing it at every stop. Literally hasn’t done it a single time since swapping to springs. I wonder if any of those others experiencing the clunk were on bags or springs? If mine comes back I will definitely let you know but so far it’s been clunk free! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾💯
This video was so helpful to me in understanding what’s going with my 2005 Lexus GX470. I’m feeling and hearing a slight jerking noise and slight bump when I start my car an expect it to raise up quietly. Seems like I feel every bump in the road while driving.
Sounds like that is definitely a suspension problem. This conversion made a huge difference in how the car driving now. Very nice and smooth - better that on air bags. Thank you for watching!

Cool video. I have a GX470 and my bags are starting to fail. I am going to replace them with some new bags and keep the air suspension. I found some reasonably priced bags but was wondering if would need any additional parts for the job? My compressor seems to work fine and will still raise the car, just have that one side that starts sagging. I am not doing to work myself, found a mechanic who will install my parts. Thanks!
What is the part called, that you replaced the switch in the console please? Ours turned out great, watching your video, made it easy, thanks so much...
Great video! My airbags also failed and had a buddy replace them with coils and new shocks. I don’t think he pulled the fuses because my ABS, VSC TRAC, and VSC OFF lights are on my instrument cluster. Is it normal for these lights to be on if the fuses are not pulled? If I removed the exact same fuses, should these lights go off? Will the ABS and VSC still work after pulling the fuses? Sorry for the many questions but I would greatly appreciate your feedback.
There are a few write ups on this topic on IH8MUD that can probably give youI more information on which fuses to pull. If you have the same year GX as mine pulling the same fuses I pulled might work for you. Ive been told by various GX enthusiasts that some years are slightly different. In your situation I would definitely reference I8MUD.

KRT LYFE--I just installed the coils (thanks for all the tips) and the kit I bought did not come with any "rubber gaskets" for SCREWING to the chassis (top of coil) or on the axle (bottom of coil). The gaskets that came are just held in place by the pressure. Is it necessary to have screwed-in gaskets, or is it OK/SAFE to install without them?
Thanks for this video bro, mine is totally bottomed out, I'm doing research bc I love how it looks on "HI" mode, sport level. Will this kit set the height to stock "normal" or will I get something on the HI note? There are people saying we can us FJ cruiser coil to get one more inch

Hey there. After buying my GX470 and repairing the air suspension system twice and having it fail a third time, I have decided to change over to coils. It really does seem to be the best option. Anyway, I have a question regarding the Metaltech "Secondary Spring Isolators" sold in the Stage 2 and Stage 3 kits. With the Unity coils, are the secondary isolators required (these are the cone shaped rubber parts that are in the stage 2 and 3 metaltech conversion kits)? It doesn't appear that you used them in your video, but so many other people on forums keep stating that the top-of-coil cone shaped isolators are necessary... I'm about to do this conversion and ordered all of the parts, but could save myself some money by returning those secondary isolators if they're not needed or can't be used in conjunction with the Unity coils. Thanks for your time! Great video!
Jerrid Higgins I’ve seen people do this job on UA-cam with out using any additional isolators. I would say if you plan on lifting the vehicle a lot or plan on doing any heavy off-roading go for it. If you plan to stay on asphalt most of the time I would think they aren’t necessary.
why would you buy one in the first place..same probs as land rover..too much luxury to break..id buy a 70,s 4x4,& a decent bmw with the change,& a hollidy too,for the price of that rubbish you drive..
@@phantomwalker8251 its basically toyota/lexus if you look up in 4runner and gx470 forums you will see for yourself. A bmw will be a nice money pit down the road. Talk to any guy including myself who has either a 4runner/Lexus/FJ , the overwhelming majority will say that they wouldn't trade it for anything else in terms of reliability and Overlanding capability.
Just brought the Metal Tech kit. My question is I also brought some new shocks since they must partially come off but I brought regular Bilstein 33-313146 shocks , can I install these with the kit? The factory adjustable shocks cost $1,775 😢
One other thing. Since you're removing the control for the shocks (i.e., comfort to sport dial), should we make sure that it's in the setting that we permanently want the truck to be in before disabling the dash lights? Or does the truck go to a specified shock setting once the controls are removed so it doesn't matter?
Jerrid Higgins I am not 100 percent sure. Honestly I couldn’t feel the difference in the settings. I would say set it to your preference to be on the safe side.
How much does it cost to lift a car by 1-2inches ? I have a 2006 highlander and I found some front and rear strut lift kit from eBay. I am just wondering can any mechanic just do the job because I have watched some videos on the process ..... you have to remove all 4 shocks ( the front ones by popping the hood ). So I am wondering how much they would charge me ?? The strut form eBay are 160$ front and about the same from the back
I loved you video. I just converted my GX470 to Springs and the dash light keeps flashing off. We pulled the two fuses and unplugged the console control. Any suggestions to get off light to stop flashing?
Great video! I’m planning to perform the same conversion myself. There are SO many coil conversion products to choose from! How did you arrive at the one from UNITY? It’s significantly less expensive (~e.g. 50% less compared to MONROE) than most of the competitors out there, but not as well known. Just curious to know if I should shell out the extra couple of hundred for a well known company. Thanks again!
I read countless forums on the different springs and it seemed to me there wasn’t much difference. So I went with the best price plus best reviews. I really like the springs I have. The ride is great we tested them on some light off-road and they performed well. It has been a few months now and they don’t sag or bottom out so we are very happy with them. Thanks for watching and good luck on the conversion!
This was a really helpful video to see how I might do this for a 2nd gen Sequoia, thank you. Sorry to hear about the accident, hate to lose a unicorn. Was hoping you could answer a question tho...do the shocks and air springs work together? I was thinking if I went to coils on my sequoia that I could still adjust the electronic shock setting between comfort, normal and sport.
That is a good question, there might be a way to preserve that function but I’m not sure. I would do some reading on IH8MUD. You might be able to find a solid answer there.
I did the install without the metal tech retainers, and it worked fine. But I ordered a kit from Amazon, (mistake) the rear springs did not have enough strength to hold the vehicle level with the front, so i went to NAPA and bought the rear springs and had to fight with the seller from amazon to do the return.
Andrew Gonzales interesting mine still sits higher than the front (with the metal tech kit). The only time ours sits levelish is when it is fully loaded with gear and people. I have been even considering installing a leveling kit to bring the front up a tad.
@@KRTLyfe After i bought the rear springs from NAPA mine was sitting like yours was, but the front struts that came initially with the Amazon kit i bought lifted the front up almost 2 to 3 inches. When it was all said and done the vehicle sat level but with a lift on the front and back. If you do decide to change the front, i would recommend using "strut masters" and contact them. They are more expensive than some of the other kits you will find but provide good customer support and a better quality product. here is the link to the front change out i did, i also changed the CV shafts and front bearings as well due to my GX 470 having 220,000 miles on it and one of the bearings were grinding. Couldn't quite understand if the spring were just better because you were comparing them to your broken air shocks, or were you saying that it actually feels better than properly working air shocks?
Thanks for the video I will have to change mine soon as it is a common failure in the FJ120 or prado as it is called here . Do those springs keep the ride height to normal ?
Awesome video! You mentioned that you got a rubber isolator or pad for the bottom of the spring, above the axel. Your amazon link I read a comment on someone else’s amazon purchase that theirs didn’t come with it. Do you believe it’s required? Was trying not to buy the metaltech conversation puck if it wasn’t required. Thank You in advance.
I would personally have something there so it’s not metal on metal. That isolator even the small thin one should reduce noise, vibration and the chance of the spring shifting or coming out. I’ve heard of people installing the springs with out them, but if you plan to drive off road I would definitely find or fabricate something.

Did a full air ride delete today on my 2005 thanks to you, man! Just bought it so this is only the beginning but I can’t thank you enough!
Glad I could help!
Did you change out the shocks too?
Which fuses do you need to pull? Thanks
AWESOME job you two! just bought an 06 today and was worried about the whole air system replacement. I don't think I have a big air leak but it won't stay in high. I am totally doing this exact coil changeover as soon as possible! Thanks, you made it look easy!
Glad it helped!
What kit did you go with and how has everything been so far?
@@timesofyourlife1 I went with the Eibach kit which gives 2-3 inch lift. I was able to do the rear myself but the front struts weren't assembled so I don't have them in yet. I had family get sick and that was more important. I'm in Mexico now and will get everything finished when I get home. CHEERS!
About to do this with a Dobinsons conversion kit for my 08. Definitely had the same problems with one of the air bags failing. Looking forward to the upgrade
Awesome!
Just did this with the same springs. Thanks to this video, I saved the extra money because they did, in fact, come with the lower isolators. I am really thankful for the video. It helped a lot.
what kit did you use?
@node4148 same thing he uses. Basically the cheapest kit on Amazon.
Thx Bro you’re describing all the same problems I’m having with my recently purchased 05 GX 470. So I’m going to follow suite with your repair to the T. Thx again & keep rocking.
No problem, glad you found the video useful and good luck with your repair!
Had to come back to your vid after so many years. My GX air bags finally gave up, and i got the Metal tech conversion springs. Time to install!
Love to hear it, I am glad that years later this video is still helping people with this issue!
I used this video along with another from Metal Tech. Just taking off the bottom bolt on the shock was much better than trying to remove the top bolt. I ended up replacing the shocks too, they were very tired. Anyway, thanks for the vid.
Excellent video. I'm shopping for a GX470 now and doing my homework. Thank you!
We absolutely love this truck. Thank you for watching!
I just competed this with the metal tech 4x4 spring kit. I did not cut the bump stops I have no issues. The kit was $400 with $100 shipping (HI). Highly recommend this conversion. Super easy to do.
Is this less then the strut master?
@@ArukahApothecary I’m not sure I went too metal tech 4x4. I didn’t want to trust a cheap Amazon part and got mines straight from the company website.

I am planning to buy 2008 sequoia. Let’s see i can do that. Very helpful video.
Hope it works for you!
Thanks for the video. I was searching for the conversion on a 1st gen toyota sequoia. This is probably the closest I can get. It's probably the same.
Hopefully it will be pretty similar and this video will help you out. Thank you for watching!
How did it come out? I’m looking to do the same thing asap
@@nastynel2 it was easier than I thought it would be. Pretty much plug and play.
Great video. This looks like the parking garage at Block Lofts in Atl.

Bro, I can’t thank you enough for this video.
No problem we are glad you found it helpful!
the bumping sound or feeling is the drive shaft which is in two parts stretching past its limits. once i changed it ,the sound went away. good luck.
Nice!
About to buy used gx470, my last car (this incarnation), and, the scariest thing is "THE Clunk". If this solves it, I will be so relieved!!!!! If not, less so...
For me it worked, for others they either greased or replaced driveshaft parts.

No, I never had a need to change my front suspension when I owned the GX.
Kurt Lyfe, I need the part numbers and where to get the kits. Great video👍🏾.
Parts should be in the description.

I believe that you can, the factory system should be disabled.
Towards the end of the video we show a close up of what fuses we pulled. Thanks for watching commenting and subscribing!

@@KRTLyfe Thank you for the quick reply! Wasn't familiar with IH8MUD, will go check that today, appreciate it 👍
I did the install without the metal tech retainers, and it worked fine.
@@rickychauhan2217 We put a decent amount of mileage on the GX after we did this mod. In our case the GX retained very nice ride characteristics until the accident. Yes they should if you don't use the metal tech kit. The air suspension is a very common failure on these cars.

Great video! thanks. Do you have a part number for the filler piece for the cabin where you removed the switch?
It was available on eBay but the link keeps changing. I think I wrote it in the description.
