- Here's what you can expect when actually painting models with Speedpaint! In this tutorial, I painted 30 different models quite fast without using much skill. These results are 100% accessible for total beginners, or anyone who wants to paint their models quickly. The minis are for Dungeons and Dragons and Ravaged Star. The DnD minis are mostly from The Lost Dragons, The Lost Adventures, and Titan Forge.

I'm painting all these DnD minis because of the game I'm playing in! You should totally check it out :-) The Twenty Sided Realms Podcast tsrpodcast.libsyn.com/tsrp-waterdeep-episode-1
*_Something is odd? I wonder, do maybe the contrast-only painted minis look like pre-painted out of the box minis?_*
I'm on episode 3 now of the TSRP podcast. I'm really enjoying it and your pyromaniac character is fun :)
OMG! You are in the TSRP?! Awesome podcast, give a huge compliment to your wonderful DM! 👍👍
Well, for those of us who don't do this as their primary hobby these look amazing.
It's sweet how you always direct people to Dana Howl for examples of your work but better.. but your work ain't bad at all!
Thanks! Dana and I realized we were working on the same models with the same materials at the same time, we had a good enough laugh that it was worth a shoutout :-)
Dan bull like minis huzzah lol love both channels
👀 Dan bull watches mini painting videos?! That's so cool, big fan
Dana redirects people to his channel for more scientific explanations!
Damn this dude is sick on ERB! Awesome to hear he’s an avid mini painter!
Great video Brent 😊😊
hey thanks duncan! :-)
Lord?
It's so wonderful to see these NPCs come to life for your Waterdeep taverns. It's even more wonderful to see new contrast paint lines and tutorials aimed at newer hobbyists. They're a welcome boon for new players in my experience.
right on buddy! :-)
Or experienced painters. I easily see these becoming my new basecoat paints for most everything. Especially since basecoating is normally slow and sucks. However with these possibly one basecoat with some highs and shadow already built-in, then work from there as needed.
Thank you sir for telling us "it's ok to paint just to get minis ON THE TABLE".
I enjoy I your content sir.
The more I see this, the more I'm intrigued by what they can potentially do. The tricky thing is working out how to best use them as the results really are super variable. They seem to fit the D&D style really well.
absolutely! we gotta find the right uses for these things, but they're a great new tool for the toolbox! :-)
I bought these speed paints a few days ago because I was trying to get myself back into painting miniatures. It's been years, and I'm not good by any means, but these made it fun again. It really makes a huge difference when you bring out your miniatures for a game and you're not embarrassed by them! Thank you for your speed paints videos, they're just what I needed to bring me back to the hobby.
I know these are supposed to be cheats for painting table-ready quickly and not necessarily beautifully, but i unironically love the way that the makeup brush "zenithal" looks under the speedpaints. It makes me think of those old sketch-y illustrations from old fantasy books. And it brings out highlights and detail in a more interesting way than the classic spray zenithal imo. Keep up the good work with these!
Yes. Realistic miniatures with precise details, light and colors are great, but "sketch-y illustrations from old fantasy books" appeals to me even more.
I just started my journey into this hobby. Bought an Army Painter starter set of regular acryllic paint, a can of black primer, 3 brushes and a black wash. Not even 3 weeks later, and I just got a delivery of a really nice set of high quality brushes, white primer for zenithal priming and different-colored washes as I didn't like how the black wash behaved on all of my minis. My minis look really shitty compared to the ones my friends who have been playing wargames for years now but I don't really care! I am really having fun with the hobby and the mini I just finished looks miles better than the group of goblins my players will encounter in our first DnD session, which was the first batch of minis I painted.
You and a few other channels like Miniac and Ninjon really helped and continue to help me in taking step by step forward. So, thank you. From the bottom of my heart. Without you, I would not have found one of the most important activities in my current live. It's been a rough couple of years, as my mental health took a nosedive once Covid hit, but going from listening to Critical Role, to planning my own campaign, to buying and painting the NPCs and villains my players are going to encounter helped immensely with that.
That's awesome! Welcome to the hobby, I'm so glad that you're having fun with it. I bet your players will appreciate it too! I advocate for this hobby because I know how great it can be for mental health and overall wellbeing- one of the better pastimes out there for sure :-)
I first painted a few miniatures around 1982. I’m considering getting back into the effort and your videos are my lighthouse. I hope you are a teacher of some sort for your day job, because you are one of the great teachers on UA-cam.
Nice! Come on back to the hobby, the water is warm! :-) Somehow this is my full-time gig now, but previously I spent many years as a chemistry TA ;-)
That tavern scene at the end is just too awesome. Dang, I just absolutely love that. Can’t wait to get my hand on a set of these paints😍.
right? I love a good tavern scene! :-)
Agreed. How do we get these again?
This looks very beginner friendly. I physically can't paint minis on my own, but I know the family members who help me with the hobby would absolutely love this stuff
fun for the whole family! :-)
IT'S ALL ABOUT ENJOYING THE HOBBY NO MATTER HOW THEY TURN OUT AND ONCE THERE ON THE TABLE QUICK WHO CARES,,, ENJOYED THE TUTORIAL ON THESE NEW ARMYPAINTER SPEED PAINTS,,, CHEERS 👍
This is the Ravaged Star line that the Valkyrs are from!

As a casual painter these look right up my alley
Your positive attitude and enthusiasm is what the world needs
Man I really appreciate you for these videos! I used to paint my HeroQuest and Dragon strike minis with my Father's Testor model paint. Now, my Daughter and i have the newer Hero Quest set, and I cant wait to paint them! You've recruited one more to your fellowship of painters
that's awesome, have fun!!! :-)
As someone with limited time and skill, this is really helpful. I got the full set of speedpaints for christmas and it has made the hobby much more enjoyable and encouraged me to improve.
It is incredible how good these look after just one coat of paint. Amazing technology. Thanks for showcasing.
That high contrast white on the undercoat makes the end result look drybrushed automatically. Brilliant!
Life has provided me with little time to paint miniatures and so I haven't painted for far too long.
I have always been a fan of speed painting and maybe this is my answer to painting in the future!
Thanks for the inspiration Brent!
Much love from Eugene Oregon.
there ya go! I wish you the best of luck in getting some painting done :-)
I've got a big box of 100+ minis coming in sometime in the next 2 months and I want to get them painted right away, so they don't end up in the "pile". Based on your results here and the efficiency you've mentioned being able to achieve, I think Speed Paints are going to be the solution I'm looking for. Thank you!
I had wondered on how durable the final product was, so thank you for the info on needing to seal it up with varnish. Plus 23 background minis in 3 days is a really solid rate of painting and sounds really interesting for that type of niche tabletop requirements.
absolutely! I was pleasantly surprised at how fast these got painted up.
Ordered my first batch of mini's last week. I'm stoked to goof around with these speed paints!
I have been experimenting with the speed paints and I love him too. One of the things that I've done to combat the darker look once it dries is to let it dry for a day and then come back and wet brush, basically take a brush you would use to dry brush and just get it slightly damp and then brush it gently over the model to take away some of the speed paint from the top surfaces help restore some of the contrast. Another thing I'm doing is mixing the speedpaints a little bit to get either a darker or lighter color and you can do this after you've applied the paint to the model.
The guy at 9:02 legit looks marvelous. Those spears are so pretty. The musician in the blue dress also looked great.
It's just so fascinating to see someone painting with these colours. Love it.
glad you liked it! :-)
As a person who JUST got his first Star Wars Legion Core Set and has NO experience in painting minis (or tabletop gaming), I'm jazzed to get into these paints. Can't wait!
Nice!!! have fun getting started, you can do it!!! :-)
The White Speed Paint you'll definitely want but it comes in the $99 box nxt month.
@@DarthP00P00 Just pre-ordered the mega set :)
I have not painted minis in more than 15 years. I don't have a lot of time for hobbies but after watching this video I am going to pick up a set of speed paints and paint some of my board game minis!
Nice! That'll be fun :-)
I swear this channel is such a treat. Every time I see one of your videos pop up in my recommendations, I wanna pick up a brush and get painting again,
hehehe, go paint something!!! :-)
Contrast paints totally renewed my interest but now I HAVE to try these as well, thanks Brent!
Essentially, the Speedpaint is good/great - speedy, forgiving, smooth, one layer works for every colour, but what really works is the prep; the black undercoate and the white dry brushing (that's a really great idea) makes the Speedpaint pop. Every colour looks great over that prep, because it shows the shadows in the folds of the clothes and shows up as grime, when you need it to for character enhancement. Nicely done. Good example of how Speedpaint can work well.
Do you know if the white dry brushing needs to be a primer? Or can it be any Vallejo/Citadel white?
Great video! As a Warhammer player, I'd definitely recommend this, because frankly painted minis > unpainted minis. I figure if you're starting your first army, by all means, go to town with this stuff. Painting minis quickly and easily and getting a paint job that looks great on the tabletop (arms length, not zoomed in digital photos with perfect lighting) is super motivating and helps new players avoid the dreaded hobby fatigue.
I've picked up a set, and determined I'm going to paint an entire Adepta Sororitas army with them, just to see how it goes and most importantly, how quickly I can get a decently good looking army!
Color me impressed. Will definitely have to pick up these paints.
Goobertown new video notification is always such a happy moment
These look wonderful! Speedpaint sorcery at work for sure. The tavern scene is just glorious!
thanks! I love me a good tavern scene :-)
I definitely think that zenithal-esque techniques make such a difference for contrast paints, if I need to do true speedpainting for a while model I'll definitely do something like this!
I ordered the full set after your last video, and this video gives me great info as I wait 2 months for the paint. Thank you! Really appreciate you trying these out for us!
I really like how the white drybrush gives the models a grittier feel. After watching this I’m kind of tempted to pick up a set of speed paint to get my cursed city set done
right? we gotta use that undercoat more often. I was thinking darkest dungeon, but you're right it matches the cursed city box art too :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies I love the art from Darkest Dungeon
you re prob the most wholesome painter in my subscriptions
Last played Warhammer maybe… 20 years ago? All these new-fangled paints, tools, the growing and diverse community, not to mention UA-cam tutorials - almost tempted to jump back in!
This is exactly what I have been looking for as a proper review for these paints. This is basically exactly what I want the paint for as well, because I have a DnD game coming up and I have NPCs and characters to paint, and I have A lot of monsters to do as well. I plan to get the starter kit once available, as I think it will cover the majority of what I plan to paint with it. Thank you for this review, I am looking forward to these paints.
Nice! yeah dnd npcs are a great match for these paints.
Great video. I'm really enjoying playing around with speedpaints. It's incredibly quick to get a basic decent looking tabletop mini together, but throw on a quick spray of matt varnish and you can go to town on adding glazes and blends to improve the paint job as much as you like. The speedpaints blend perfectly with regular acrylics to alow layers to be built up over your varnished base coat.
Yeah! these are fun, eh? :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies Fun is the right word - the colour palette seems designed for 'old school' fantasy miniatures - Perfect for Northumbrian Tin Soldier and other comic fantasy figures. Thanks again for the video.
as a super noob in this hobby i saved like 120+ video on a YT dedicated playlist to create a giant tutorial for someone like me who's never picked up a brush. Since i don't want to use an airbrush, seeing you priming the minis in black highliting them with a white drybrush made me scream....."F.....g finally now i know where shadows are and where to highlight!!"
Sooo i want to thank you for making my hobby easier from now on, and i subscribed !
0:07 "No real skill" You are a great comedian. Keep up the great work!
After a hiatus since 2008 I finally got some mini's out of storage and using you methods. With the magetised bases, dowel holders and speedpaints I love the first results.
This came up in my ASMR feed, not gonna lie, pretty relaxing to watch you paint haha.
heheheh, thanks for watching! :-)
It’s always great to see some good beginner videos for people just getting into the hobby. I’d love to see you take a crack at thinning these speed paints with more easily available mediums that come in much larger containers, as running out of the speed paint/contrast mediums is always an issue.
I gotta get back to my paint medium studies! :-)
That last shot with the whole batch on the tavern looked so cool.
Thanks! That's what it's all about right there- I love a good tavern scene! :-)
I'm a tavern guy. They look great. Thank you for the instruction as I am about to pull the trigger on Speedpaint.
These look great! Well done! And really enjoy that bar scene at the end. That's not just a love letter to table top standard but a love letter to Goobertown and all the hobbying you've inspired. I'm sure one could easily fill a raucous waterdeep tavern with all the hobbyists who got into it or stuck to it or were motivated by Goobertown Hobbies videos.
That would be a heck of a tavern! Thank you for the kind words :-)
I came for the paint review, I subbed for that big, goofy grin!
Great video man! Thanks!! Very entertaining as well.
You know, speaking as someone who's only been mini painting for about a year and knows they're by no means great at it, it's really comforting to see someone I know is amazing at it put a lot less effort into it, have and end product that's a lot closer to my level, and still be pretty happy with it. Helps reestablish that we don't all have to be Golden Demon winners to have some fun with it and finish with something we're happy with :)
Love this video - this is absolutely what I always advocate for. Painting doesn't have to be hard, and can be super accessible. My go-to used to be contrast paints, but it's increasingly looking like Speedpaints might be the future!
Yeah! These may have just crossed the line to being something I'd seriously recommend to a brand new painter.
As always, i adore your methods, your script is both informative and your cadence smooth and inviting! I'm also always so thankful that you take all the steps you can to shout out to your sources, AND provide further info for folks to follow up on. Great work c:
hey thanks, I appreciate that!! :-)
I recently stumbled upon my mom's old paint supplies and discovered some silk painting colors. On a whim I tried a really vibrant emerald on one of my models, and lo and behold, it basically works the same way these inks do, very vibrant, but still translucent, and the effect is quite pleasing. Looking forward to these speedpaints, certainly looks like they're gonna elevate a lot of people's paintjobs with less effort than the tried and true methods, and if they wanna try their hand at highlighting and detail work etc. those still very much exist, so win-win I'd say!
That's the perfect application for this kind of paint, and they look 'good enough'. It seems like using this as a base paint and then picking out details with a 'normal' acrylic could have some really nice results!
absolutely! :-)
More excellent insight and experimentation=radness!!😎👍
I'm blown away by how awesome that tavern scene looks Brent. Can't wait to get my hands on some Speedpaint and try it out! Well done.
thanks! I do love a good tavern scene :-)
I think this is the not only the BEST use case for SpeedPaint, but probably Army Painter's intended use case. You get a table full of vibrant minis quickly and easily. Are they gonna win awards. No. But that's not the point.
100% this right here :-)
Man, I absolutely love your videos. You have a very ice voice to listen to and would totally watch a video of you and some friends playing a DnD adventure. I've learned so much from your videos and i can't wait to start painting my second (ever) minis with the AP speed paints. :)
Take care!
the results from just slapping it on there are pretty incredible. I think with a second pass of detail highlighting these would look like you spent all day on each one. Good on Army Painter for coming up with an answer to a games workshop product that is actually identifiable on the shelf. They have a lot of paints that seem like they're meant to be alternatives to layer paints or technical paints but there's nothing on the bottle to say "hey, this is transparent, like, really transparent bro" (looking at you jungle green) - it's nice to actually know what you're getting here.
right? every company has good products and not so good products... I think army painter just got their killer app!
Just saw your cameo on discourse miniatures latest video, I love her content and it's always nice to see your kind enough to be a part of other creators videos Brent!
I’d like to see a few identical sets of models with one group having a white primer and the other set having a black primer. Then painting the mirror characters with the same paint schemes would show exactly how the Speed Paints act. Your figures, even when you aren’t trying, look pretty sweet (some more than others, yes, but none look “bad”). Stay awesome and Keep the videos coming. 🤙
Fantastic video and exactly the information I was looking for. Most important - it looks like fun! And getting rapidly through a pile of minis that you just want color on leaves you a lot more time to spend on the hero miniatures that you want to spend that extra time on.
it WAS fun!!! :-)
Thanks so much for this video. I particularly like how much you can see the effect of the highlight
Those are good lookin Kobolds!
heck yeah!! :-)
These paints are really nice and the models turned out very good too. I think a few look a bit too muted, but that's actually kinda perfect for background characters in a tavern that aren't supposed to distract from the other important characters. And even those that are a bit too muted for my taste just need a slight touch-up to make them pop a little and they are golden. Most miniatures look great the way they are, too.
These paints are something else. I bet they are a godsend to people who play TT strategy games where you end up with dozens of miniatures of a certain type. You can paint them quickly and still give them plenty of individual details.
Yeah! People are gonna get a lot of good use out of these :-)
I’m very excited to try these later! Thanks for the video coverage and hints about dry brushing white.
I'm thinking about buying the Citadel contrast paints. Now seeing your video about Army Painter Speed paints, I have to say, you sold me on this.
ohh, have fun!!! :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies
I have to say, the Army Painter SpeedPaints set I bought, the starter set that came with 10 paints, I have so much fun with them. I've painted the Pre-primed minis from DnD/Pathfinder/Starfinder minis to now Atomic Mass Game's Marvel Crisis Protocol figures.
Overall, I am highly satisfied with the set and will be grabbing more paints soon.
Wow, they look awesome for the amount of work they required!! Those will look awesome on a table top.
I used this method for spedpainting and love the result. Thank you so much. Easy, quick and a very nice look for a novice like me. :)
Awesome video on real-world use to a great tabletop standard! Very happy to see this demo, Brent, and great to hear your thoughts on the process.
Speedpaint is shaping up to be the first pre-order I don't regret.
An interesting watch, I didn’t bother with Citadel contrast paints but I’m thinking I will actually get some of these new speed paints. I must add that in my experience, your rubbing of the 2 figures together would probably result in chips in the paint regardless of whether it was speed paints or normal acrylics, especially if they’re metal figures!
I can't wait to get my Speedpaint Mega set in March. They look like they will make painting with my disability and general "Messy look" so much more forgiving if I make a zenithal base before starting. Thanks for the awesome content as usual.
Nice! yeah this stuff is surprisingly forgiving, especially with that black and white undercoat. Have fun with them :-)
Thanks for the demonstration. Looking at painting my minis for Heroquest, and trying to figure out where to start.
I use contrast paints for the majority of my painting anymore! I’ve found that I have more enjoyment just getting a model done and ready for the table than trying to make it look perfect. I think the contrast paints lean a little too hard into the dark side of colors so after seeing your results and how well they look I’m going to have to pick up a set of these!
It’ll also round out my collect of army painter paints I already have 😂
Wow. Lots of fantastic tabletop paints. I might have to get them after all. As always, thank you for diligence.
Great demonstration of these paints Goobs - I'm enjoying playing with the speed paints myself, they're pretty fun for what they are! Definitely see them being a good addition to your arsenal of paints.
I really like the way the d&d figures came out. For some reason gives me a very retro vibe
Thanks! I like them too :-)
I really like the look over the black-white basecoat, more so than over the white only. Thank you for showing that process! I like to do minis I need to use but don't have the time to paint in just that black-and-white style, and to know the speedpaints will work well over that makes the choice to get them much easier :)
It's a good option for sure, I'll probably be using it more often for my DnD stuff! :-)
Awesome review Brent, I put in an advance order after your last review.
I'm now even happier that I did.
Thanks Brent
nice! have fun with 'em :-)
Your models look very good. I love speed paints. Makes me feel like an artist!
Great video. Very informative. Thanks Brent.
As a reasonably new painter trying to get some models ready to play this is fascinating stuff. Keep up the great content!
Nice! I think these will end up being popular with new painters for sure :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies Completely agree. I'm already thinking of the next 1K points for my army and how this would change the speed of having them ready to play.
Though that said I'm enjoying the more classic method to learn techniques right now. Still options are nice, right?
The models all together in the tavern look great! Such a fun, lively jumble of color. I think these paints will be great for folks who want to just get some painted models on the table. And they seem like they have a lot of potential for glazing. One thing I think these could be amazing for would be if wizkids started using them for their pre-painted line. The current pre-painted minis tend to come out looking pretty horrific. Personally I'm not particularly interested in speed painting but I'll pick up a few colors to mess around with for sure.
absolutely!! :-) Glad you liked the tavern scene, that was a lot of fun
Really awsome job on these figurines with the army painter contrast paint
Some Nice Colours that Pop .. ✌️💚
Thanks for the bit about Varnish. Someone else had some reactivation issues, looks like it may just depend on what you're using.
The black priming and white drybrushed basecoat give a grim cartoony look. I love this aesthetic more than the regular layering method.
I use it all the time with layering only on some parts of the model
I'm a beginner who started painting 2 years ago with my kids... I only use contrast paints now. It's much easier, and it looks better than what we can achieve with nomal paints.
Thank you for making this video, good to see some complete models done (and not just a single colour).
absolutely! thanks for watching :-)
I’ve received my set and will use them to lessen my huge pile of shame. I love how these models turned out 😉.
And as you say: not the best paintjob, but a lot better than unpainted 🤪
Thanks for your video (and some other others I've seen on these paints). I've decided to pick up a Speedpaints kit, I reckon they'll allow me to do some basic but functional paintjobs on my various boardgame minis (which vary in terms of detail but almost always look better with at least a basic sundrop style paintjob)
This is a wonderful follow up video! I have about 150 townsfolk and monster minis I need to paint up and think these speed paints are going to be perfect for that.
nice! That's an awesome project, have fun :-)
I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing these available in my local game store. I've been experimenting with paints I've never used before lately and these look like a welcome addition to my stash.
(I have officially become a paint goblin)
#paintgoblin :-)
I was talking to my son the other day and I was painting some minis. I was saying how it takes a long time sometimes and he said that he doesn't care so much about the details as long as they're cool...in other words, they don't see the small details I put in on an NPC that is about to be murdered, talked to, or is background so I shouldn't worry so much about the super fine details. For me, personally, these speed paints will help in accomplishing that goal and getting more time playing.
Really putting in the work on this review.
