Using the lids for painting the actual color is ... mindblowing, why haven't I thought of that :O
Right?!
It's next level
Very creative and useful for sure.
finally someone who tried the "normal" painting test route.
Yeah got tired of "salesman" tubers doing airbrush 3d printed busts like someone cared about that.
@@livanbard yeah and just painting one color solid on one figure doesn t help deciding how they act in a normal painting situation.
THIS 🙌🙌🙌
Yes this is true.
@@eiszapfenkobold I like those demos as part of a review, but not when that’s the extent of the testing.
I've never seen such heresy as painting lego bricks different colours!
Trust me. Legos make Warhammer look cheap.
@@Hugme778 that just makes the heresy worse.
Lol
So instead of treating this rehydration trait like a flaw, and trying to force it into your workflow, you just adapted your workflow and turned the trait into a strength. That is awesome, keep up the good work!
That opening about killed me. 🤣
Also, zenithaling and painting the caps is a really great idea!
I’m totally doing the same when my set comes in. Great video, new sub!
So the rehydration thing let's you achieve something similar to an oil wash without having to buy all the extra stuff you need to do an oil wash? Definitely sounds like a benefit.
That might be something to test out for weathering. For instance having a grimey brown on top of a solid basecoat and pulling it away with a sponge could do wonders for a dirty look.
@@Shrilack I've actually tried that exact technique for grime and grunge and I have to say, it really looks fantastic
@@raeishimura Got any picture? I wouls love to see how it looks
That was basically my idea, now just have to buy the set :P
I can't understand how this channel don't have a few millions subs.
Keep the good work!
I have a theory why... I postulate it's because Jay doesn't showcase just how good of a painter he is with actual "painting" videos. If you've watched his nightly live stream videos then you'll know he can paint as well as anyone on UA-cam (hell, he got a finalist Golden Demon award for something he painted just while live streaming and with no intention of entering into a competition!) Personally, I'd love to see a compilation video of the streaming videos each time he's done with a "series". Otherwise, it's rare to see how bad-ass all of his models are, especially if you just go by video title.
People don’t like to think that this thing still exists in the modern day, but It’s because he’s brown. He doesn’t fit the “normal” of the mini-painting war-gaming demographic, therefore less popularity and acceptance.
@@cthulhu73one year later, and I think your theory is confirmed.
Well that speed paint on the marine sold me…. I definitely want to try it now on the rest of the marines.
The Cap Idea is amazing, damn I will steal this =D
SAME
Yeah I'm about to go home and paint all my caps haha
As a 34 year long dark angel player I would add the ap you did to my army and melt down the contrast one. Yes my first marines where black in colour and from the 30 marine box.
I started working with mine today, and i'm really enjoying them. I love that they don't have that splotchy effect that GW's Contrast Paints leave behind.
My man! I love them walkers.
you know it;) when will we see some SW legion over at Goobertown USA?
@@EonsOfBattle sooner than you think ;-)
I love your paint style, it goes to show it's the painter not the paint that does the work, cos all your stuff looks like it was painted by you no matter what you use
My two year old heard you say “3, 2, 1, boom!” From the other room and it made him start giggling so hard. Now he keeps saying it.
Awesome video, I find the Army painter speed paints to be fairly consistent but just gotta understand the caveats, the Citadel contrast paints from the ones I have tried seem to act differently from one another, and the splotchy look drives me a bit insane... doing extra layers makes the color look smoother but just really dark. I have my likes and dislikes for both... nice to have options just wish the Army Painter stuff was sold individually as the mega set does have some stuff I like thats not in the little set.
they do sell the paints individually on the Army Painter website
@@EonsOfBattle ah thats good to know. Suppose i missed that or maybe when i looked they didnt have em listed that way. Everywhere local to me sells just box sets of there stuff, no individual units so I thought maybe thats just how they roll lol
@@Madlittlepixel the paints are brand new, I bet over time they will get out to stores individually
@@EonsOfBattle my local has them, Element games in the UK. Would have thought US would have them before us..
Im with you on contrast, they are terrible on flat surfaces and they all act differentlt to each other, Im struggling with the white and greys, they are awful, hoping Speedpaint ones are better, unless @eonsofbattle can persuade me toward, say, Scale75 ones???
Thanks mate, you’ve sold me on the new stuff. And the fact that i can rehydrate it is actually fantastic.
I am just entering this hobby via Kill Team. I never painted miniatures before and put off painting them until these paints came out. So I have no experience with any other paints. My minis look better than I expected them to and that may have inspired me to try other methods. For someone with no painting experience, I think these paints are fantastic. I'm very happy with my results.
Spraying the caps and painting them to get both the paint colour and know which one is which in one go? Mind blown!
So, I've been using these for quickly painting up mobs for D&D. They work really well for a one layer paint job that is quick and easy because I have difficulty with painting for a long period of time. I was injured years ago and my right arm tends to start hurting really badly after a while, so I can't really paint large groups of models for a long time. I really appreciate paints like this that work quickly and needing very few layers to get done
For a niche paint like this, painting the caps is genius!!!
Thanks for not wasting our time with "unboxing"... that alone is worth the upvote!
Mine arived yesterday and I am looking forward to get some work done at the weekend.
The reactivation is just kind of something that happens with inks so it's not particularly huge if you're used to it.
The only real advantage I seen for contrast is that you can more easily glaze with it.
Not really. Liquitex nor daler rowney do that.
@@dariuschoksy6934 I have some Liquidtex and it does if I don't give it a few hours, always have to varnish after aswell to be safe.
@@oliverp3545 there is a difference between something that takes a long time to cure vs something that doesn’t. Speed paints will continue to do so weeks later. Also even with Liquitex I paint right over it 5 minutes later and don’t have issues.
Gotta admit that cap concept is quiet clever. Rather than just one quick monotone smear of paint giving it a proper zenith really makes it easy to see each colors offering for future use. Win/Win.
Super smart painting the caps like that. Just for ease of finding the right paints in the future.
12:21 damn that AP one looks amazing! Not just the colors, but how solid it looks compared to GW's.
Speed Paint marine looks amazing!
I mean, to a certain extent it's a little bit of personal preference... but that AP marine looks super and would fit in with my existing paint method.
Can't wait to try my own AP speeders!
Thanks for showing this stuff off!
4:55 "...... Uh"
Please never change Jay XD I adore you.
This is the best video I’ve seen covering speed paints. Well done
Spraying the caps is genius.
I’ve been liking your videos more and more lately but this video is what sold it for me. Great demonstration!
Great review, I'd love to see you paint some tyranids using these speedpaints? If they save time on a horde army that would be incredibly impressive
Cheezits man, I really needed that. Dana Howl's video and this one from EBA had what I really wanted to know. Thanks for the effort and your time. Excellent advice as always yo..
Thanks for this video. Was very informative. I liked the ending regarding the boxes and paints you don’t want. What a helpful insight.
Mate, i dont know how old you are, but you have the wisdom of a 90 year old. When u started talkin purchasing tactics you had me sold, i subscribed, u know ur ship!
I love my speed paints. They do what they are intend to do but they work so well in ways I wasn't expecting (I have never used contrast paints).
People told me speed paints and contrast paints won't work for Warhammer 40k models as they tend to pool on smooth flat/larger surfaces but I haven't had any issues painting my Blood Angels because Speedpaint works from an airbrush (2mm). I then roughly spot/line wash with the same paint but it is colour matched and doesn't change the colour/tone of what I have already painted.
Other reasons I like them are:
I have massive range of metallics because I can paint over Chainmail silver (Runefang) etc with the colour I want.
They blend really well. I recently painted a jumpack exhaust stands for my inceptors and used 3 of them (zealot yellow, Blood red and gravelord grey (over Vallejo grey primer) and paint a band of colour (starting with lightest and the with a wet brush pull the paint up to graduate it.
Fantastic stuff. Finally someone realises that the "controversy" is a feature not a detriment... But I must say that I did get myself the big box though. Haha
“It’s a feature, not a bug.”
Of course, this requires knowing how to use it as a feature, which I don’t think anyone has gotten a good handle on.
@@SuperDuperHappyTime strikes to me you could use it as a pseudo oil wash or even better than contrast for panel lining, dip your model textured areas on it, then reactivate to remove it from the raised areas
@@TheGoGoat91 we’ll see but probably not since these pigments seem to just mix with stuff when reactivating…. Oil was/mineral spirits come relatively clean. But again. We’ll see.
search for Swords and Brushes channel. He does take advantage of reactivation to achieve some effects with really nice result.
Unfortunately when they dont sell them individually yet, the big box isn't a bad deal.
But i imagine after the second year or so they'll start selling by the bottle.
As a glazing tool I really like the army painter speed paints. I really like to drybrush white or the like in between layers for my highlights then hit it with a new glaze. These have been nice to work with.
As for the reactivating part I also like it; its actually kinda cool to be able to pull off part of your glaze. Its like a low key version of what people can do with oil. I found you get much better results when you do this within the first 20 minutes, it was hard to do this the next day.
Painting the caps is a brilliant idea...going to steal when my speed paints arrive.
One other advantage of the reactivation is that you can "clean" off over paint. In some of the review videos, they tried to correct over paint by covering it up with more of the base white colour, which didn't work because it just mixed with the other paint. This is the normal approach with acrylics as errors can be covered once dry. With the reactivating colour, you could simply rewet it and clean it off. Or if your are painting the area with a darker colour it likely won't matter that some of the other colour gets mixed in.
I really hope I can correct errors easily this way as touch-ups are my biggest concern with the reactivation issue. Things like painting eyes, gaps in armor,etc.. I know I'll get APsp where it doesn't belong and will need to touch up, so hopefully I'll be able to simply remove it where needed....I really don't want to varnish a model 3X.
@@demon1103 same. It seems like it will work in theory. Fingers 🤞
Really nice review, great to hear about using reactivation as an advantage. And excellent idea to paint the caps!
wow, painting the caps is a very smart idea. I will be doing this when i get my mega set. Thanks!
I just got my speed paint starter set today, I’ve only messed with contrast medium from GW and it seems ok.
You no what’s faster than speed paint? That’s right, our patreon!
So, Army Painter Speed Paint isn’t an energy drink that helps you to paint faster? Dang, back to Baja Blast for this guy!
I mean, the rehydrating issue can be solved with varnishing the model once it's done, can't it?
At least from my own experience it can, yes. Which is something that most painters do normally anyway.
It’s what army painter recommend you do.
Yes, I varnished my models and had no issues with reactivation. In fact it seems on a chemical level the reactivation only occurs when dealing with water. I had no issues at all with reactivation using just the speed paint and then edge highlighting afterwords. I even tried using a wash and didn't notice it pulling away in the slightest. I used a matte varnish before trying to get a test model wet to see if it reactivated, and it seemed to stopped any reactivation from occurring from my tests.
I find that contrast just seems worse overall, it feels too hard to avoid splotchiness because of the drying time. You would be better off with speed paint of even an ink.
holy sh*t.....priming and painting the caps of the paint bottles is....genius omg
Especially for these kinds of paints cuz the caps have recesses too.. @_@ this just blew my mind
I really liked the GW black templar contrast for my marines, it let me cover up mistakes on their armor with just a couple of coats and it didn't look thick like with just straight abbadon black being used. So i was really interested in trying the army painter ones eventually. Specifically the reds. I like to use red for my energy colors on my necrons, and lights and stuff on my marines. So having a red paint that can seep into crevices nicely sounds like it will be very useful for me.
HOW DARE YOU PAINT LEGO!
But the cap idea is brilliant and made up for it.
Very neat to see you trying almost an oil wash-like technique based on the re-hydrating, and I was hoping people would come up with some cool ideas. I've not gotten to check them out yet, but it seemed to me that a lot of the "Oh no! Rehydrating!" was a bit overblown.
that troll at the start. I love it. fucking funny dude
That rehydration sounds less like a bug, and more like a feature!
From what I've watched and read I feel like your review and Brent's are the most objective ones. You pointed the good and the bad.
Thanks for your quality content.
I honestly thought you are not gonna like AP SP specifically because of reactivating, but oh boy was I wrong. I'm using them and they are really cool.
Painting the bottle caps is genuinely genius! Please companies take note
For marines, I use zenithal and then airbrush contrast. Not really what they are designed for, but it really takes advantage of the zenithal because they are so transparent. And they go on very smooth and even.
Awesome thanks! I'm starting with this new hobby and from your vids and a few others I think it's also a good starter pack for beginners.
Thank you very much! Finally a good comprehensive review with a nice plus on the rehydratation factor, I think it could be pretty easy and fast to do full model shading the same way we do with oil paints only using one of the darkest tones of this paints diluted with the plus of using water instead of white spirit to do the clean up; some people will say you are forced to varnish and seal the model but the same is neccesary with contrast paints, this ones peel off if arent properly sealed
Good work as always guys ! I received my mega set TAP Speedpaints not so long ago, quite happy with them actually :) They indeed need a bit of practice and to learn how and when to use them, but it's a nice addition to our tools set :)
Gotta say, they work pretty dope in these pesky cloths and robes my techpriest wear : black primer, white zenithal highlight, a generous coat of Blood Red aaaaaand done ! :D Also good tip : with a metalic priming/basecoat, some are REALLY shiny and make metalic paints from other lines look pale^^
Great video guys! Really good. I brought the box after watching ALL the videos on the topic and it took a lot to decide. Your video would have saved me so much time... But I'm glad I watched this anyway.
Great review, very helpful examples and comparison.
Awesome to see Legion minis back on the channel and these AT-RT's look great! I really appreciate your take on these paints. I'm struggling with them a bit but I'll keep trying.
Another excellent video! The only practical SpeedPaint video that shows results sans endless verbose opinions. Well done.
Used my dry pallette for PVA and discovered that if you leave a thin layer of PVA to dry and peel it off , then the dry paint peels of with it.
Best cold intro ever
The cap idea is genius. Now i wabt to paint all my caps
You keep calling them the wrong name. LOL Thanks for the review and hope you continue to enjoy the range!
Can't wait too se the video about women space marines!!!
The cap tip at the beginning is amazing! Thank you so much
Hello!! This is the first of your videos that I found. I like your presentation and energy! Really enjoyed the video and will hit sub!!
Painting the lids is absolutely inspired! Stealing that idea for my set!
Man I love the way you guys do videos 😂
Great, well structured and clear review. Hilarious opening 😁
Been working with these paints over the past week and 100% agree with your assessment. Well done on the video.
The burp and the smile after, the look on your face made me laugh. Nutter 😂
"Mistakes maketh art!", propably someone, somewhere, at some point in time. Its actually true, the "mistakes" "unevenness" makes the models unique and pop, like paintings, music, etc.
The proud look of a man who has burped
Seems like mixing and matching speed paint and contrast is the answer but really it depends on what you're painting as that'll drive the colour need and therefore influence which brand is best for you. Great review though. I'd expect GW to come back and reformulate Contrast soon. They do it regularly with the "normal" paints so watch this space.
The painting the Cap idea is just fantastic. Great review.
Great video! Love the perspectives and the idea that bugs can also be features!
Dude, you sold me on these paints. Other videos had me on the fence, especially with my partner just starting to get into painting...was looking for the easiest product for her to start as she's gotta build up the patience for fiddly bits. And honestly, your tests just got me excited to try them on my own pile of shame 😅
Great review. I've been really looking forward to getting my hands on the Speed Paint line. I also agree get a handful of paints to start. That marine looked great - keep 'em coming.
The controversy isn't really there, especially if you know about it ahead of time. Just something to look at when you start using them.
Painting caps, genius!! Really good review, thank you. Subscribed!
Jay I don't have the money to donate to your patreon, but I just wanted to say this new format is great and I hope you get enough subs one day to do this full time like midwinter minis. Day to day content is great and im surprised you havent started to run out of ideas yet
The cap idea is one of the best I have ever seen! Thank you!
This is the best review i've seen of this paints so far.
Awesome video. Keep up the good work.
"Don't buy the whole box if you don't need all the colors" I came here for miniature wargaming content, not to be personally attacked!
Great video! I think all the models turned out great. Speed paints aren't a complete solution but they are another tool to utilize... and I am stealing that cap idea. ALSO. I scoff at your "Just buy the paint you need and spend more on models" idea. Jay... I have a lot of paint. But do you know what I have even more of? UNPAINTED MODELS. Now that I have the full Speedpaint line, I have close to 300 paints... and at least double that in unpainted minis. :( Hopefully the speedpaints will help me knock out my Salamanders army that I've somehow acquired without ever being a Space Marine collector. ... they really need to stop putting Space Marines in every starter box.
Honestly speedpaint is my plan for my Salamanders as well, saw a video by Pickle Jar with a painted Salamander and it's the green I want (was having issues finding one I liked).
This is a great review. You really are one of my favorite mini content creators. More than anything, I keep coming back honestly just for your enthusiasm. By the time I have spent ten minutes with Jay I am all fired up to do mini things :)
I agree with everything you said about the female space marines. Now with that out of the way. I also agree with buying the paint in small quantities. You are exactly right! It’s so much fun to mix colors and find new shades. The speed paint seemed like they worked well and the space marine looked pretty great! Thanks EOB!!
im glad you show contrast/speedpaint properly you dont just slap it on and leave it, speedpaints are just a slightly fancy basecoat you still need to add highlights, weathering etc the speedpaints just make it a little more obvious where you need to add this stuff
got the small pack and churned through 80 models quickly. Some are ok and some look better than my normal painting. Blazing through the POS (pile of shame) and may need to start breaking out the boardgames soon.
I got the small pack this week, I've used them all on different models. As a new painter it's improved what I'm doing and I'd highly recommend the set to fellow new painters
I love this and your use of the lids was great but I wish this video was in your Star Wars legion playlist
The opening is excellent!
The contrast marine looked better imo BUT using that rehydration to your advantage was awesome, I definitely didn't think of that.
I ended up getting a few for my kid to use, and it's getting him painting more.
I love the miniatures, but what you have done with them is even better!
Painting the caps is SOOOOO smart. Good work man, copying that, thanks
This is a great video! Subscribed.
Perfect video.
Thank you!
I love all your vids but it is especially a treat when you break out the Star Wars Legion minis 👌
Painting the caps is such a cool idea
