- Well we are back on the discussions guys following on from last video and we have a perfect example as to why we need to stick to the rules of business, this one surprised us with how it ends!
I've had failing rockers due to the previous owner fitting the wrong springs, it was fine when the engine was cold but when hot the springs were squashing right up, couldn't push the valve down any more so caused the rocker to fail, or sometimes the lug securing the rocker shaft would fracture and lift up ..
You can retire, and junior can run the business 🤣. Good your giving all round training in all aspects of the business. This is an example of what has become missing in British industry, people want pre-qualified, not training people up. Well done.
Well done Lee. Your business is your livelihood. Theres a saying "There are no friends in business". It doesnt mean not being personable or respectful it just means keep business contacts professional.
Look after that young lad he's a diamond.
No, He's pure Diamondium
I have a business life and I have a personal life. The two are separate and do not mix. Some people have trouble with that idea, but they normally get to understand :)
Camshaft? LOL. It's the valve springs bottoming out.
Pretty much what I was thinking along the lines of... basically compressing the springs till you reach their solid height (ie. all the coils/windings in the spring are touching)... although you'd think there would also be increased lobe wear on the cam as a result, and not just broken rockers
For this to be the case, it must be on the limit most of the time (in the clear) , but under certain conditions (eg. thermal expansion; hotter engine/oil temps etc.) it's just in the red, as far as tolerances go...
@@heyitsjel Yes that's correct, in some cases the push rods would bend but it varies between rocker strength and design.
Question: What happened with the engine that was damaged by the express company? I enjoy all your videos, cheers - Chris in Illinois, USA
Young Issac, started out very shy, yet now, up for a good discussion, hes the future Lee, so dont let him go!
Always find it bizarre people blame you for a problem but they want you to sort it out!!
On the A series motor, check the clearance between the bottom of the cotter retainer and the top of the valve guide.
The replacement cam has a higher lift than the standard cam and the extra lift might just take up all of the clearance there.
The push-rod would be able to handle the pain of slight binding but the rocker would take some punishment and eventually fail.
I cant remember what style guide seal those motors had but maybe the replacement ones were a bit thicker (umbrella type) or were a bit too long (pressed onto the valve guide.
Remove the rocker assembly and see if you can put a thickish piece of copper wire bent properly into the plug hole to hold the valve closed and remove the cotters and strip out the spring.
Put the cotter retainer back with the cotters and use a piece of zim pad sponge to put a small amount of pressure to stop the retainer moving down the valve, take out the wire and turn the motor to full lift.
You can then cut some of the sponge away to see/measure what the clearance is.
Another thing you can check is that the springs are not binding at full lift.
Also, some people added a spring made from thinnish flat material (some called them dampeners I think) but as far as I was concerned, they were useless.
Private job motors that I built got a genuine set of double spring that never gave an ounce of crap.
On the motors that needed a "blueprint spec" rebuild we made sure that all the spring base to cotter retainer measurements were the same (used shims below the springs to adjust) and made sure that all the springs had the same reading when compressed to that distance.
Did it help? We thought so but then again we would.
I don't think that even one of the motors I did ever dropped a valve as far as I know.
Your spot on , had the same issue with an A series before , " grass tracker " so driven flat out all the time , binding valve springs due to high lift cam . He broke six or seven rockers . Even when using valve clearance in the tappits that sounded like a bucket of nails it still broke eventually. Back to std cam and no further issues.
Spot on. The valve springs are wrong and are becoming coil bound. Classic 12:15 old school issue see Dave Vizzards classic ‘A series engine’ book. Nothin* to do with Barum engines work.
Well done Lee, Good find shows the difference between some one that thinks they know what they are doing and and a top end professional engine builder.
I absolutely love this channel, the Lee and Issac show, seriously interesting channel and extremely entertaining
Issac needs to learn the crank grinding off of John! Exhaust valve springs being over compressed? Cheers.
Unreasonable of anyone to think you should be expected to call out. Advice as far as you need to go. Suspect youve been “overgenerous” in the past and it’s an educational exercise now. Well done Lee. In time, controversial matters can be handed over to its all part of running any business.
Have you ever seen a video on Morel lifters. I forget who published it. They got to a point where top fuel drag race roller lifters were discussed. Teams were breaking the roller needle bearings and the pins they roll on. Turned out the point in the combustion cycle they were opening the exhaust valves and the valve diameter created enough force on the valve stem, that the roller strength was exceeded. The answer Morel came up with was to install a second roller above the roller that rides on the cam. There was very little preload pushing down, just enough that when you roll the cam follower lifter, the upper also rotates. This split the load on each set of needle bearings, curing the breakage problem.
I can not imagine a situation in which a naturally aspirated engine could break the rockers. Top fuel engines are highly supercharged and develop huge cylinder pressures. To get the huge volume of combustion gases out for blowdown before opening the intake valve, an early exhaust opening timing must be used, leading to the high cylinder pressure still left in the cylinder. These engines are about 7 liter displacement and produce in the range of 12,000HP for 3 to 4 seconds.
Between runs they have about an hour to remove the heads and oil pan, possibly inspect a main bearing or 2, and put new rod and piston assemblies in and bolt the heads back on and adjust the valves.
From blowby, the oil is contaminated and green from the nitro methane, so is changed.
Broken rockers could be due to too much lift and the valve springs being bound up.
Or bottoming out on the top of the valve guide.
Great video 👍 The Morris issue could be resolved by the customer getting in touch with a austin Morris club and get some like minded to help 😊
Glad you sorted that out and I bet he realised he had set the timing up wrong!!! Hands on people always sort problems out quicker and better than paper pushers!!
More skills: Isaac is doing a great job. Perhaps you can show him how to prepare the invoice for each of the engine builds that he works on.
I think the saying is “Familiarity breeds contempt” regarding the locals 😂 they don’t like it up em 🤣😂🤣 glad you’ve drawn the line Lee, about time they give you some respect 👍👍
Hi Lee keep Morris Man at bay thanks 🎉😊😊
Lee has a PhD in winding up the rest of humanity….mate, innit, ennit, wunnit..
Obviously…
A series engines are the simplest of all designs and totally reliable in standard form. What can go wrong? Well if you fit a non standard high lift camshaft plenty but surely Lee would have checked for the valve springs binding up on full valve lift wouldn't he? I honestly cant see what else could be at fault after this rebuild and short run before the rockers broke. Unheard of in an A series. As I understand things the valve spring seats are generally machined deeper to allow for a higher cam lift. Correct me if I'm wrong but it would be wise to go back and check your work before criticising the customer Lee.
Issacs definitely needs to do his level 3. One of my regrets was after I finished my C&G L3 diploma my engineering lecturers wanted me to do my HNC and HND, but I couldn't afford to do them, and had no sponsorship, plus having been in full time education for 14 years, was sick of it, but 20 odd years later it is now something I regret.
keep business and personal separate - friends outside, customer/supplier inside, that goes for you as customer as well. That's not to say you can't have a mutually beneficial arrangement, as in with the Sealey stuff that is prominently on display.....
Have came across two engines in my career so far that broke rockers, one was because the uprated valve springs were becoming coil bound at full lift and the other was an BMC Nuffield engine that had new exhaust guides fitted that were too long or else were not pressed in far enough so the valve spring cap was hitting the valve guide only just until an exhaust rocker broke. The pushrods had an ever so slight bend in them that was barely detectable until you rolled them on a surface plate.
Coil binding comes to mind ,check the valve springs. on valve full open.
I'd love to see more on a-series engines. The first engine I pulled apart was a 1300 (aka 1275) out of a Austin 1300 (ADO16) with much guidance from 2 of my brothers who were playing with Mini's of the same era and who are now mechanics. Lots of fond memories of that time.
Interesting views and great to hear you putting the world to rights.
Comments on the Nissan had me looking up the company - interesting! SHows the value of media as well.
Lee I would like to apologise.
When you started the workshop upgrade I said it would not be finished till June.
Oops.
Next date for being finished is October.
Everyone wants" Mate's Rates " ,or " cash" no tax ,then ask for a receipt for the business 😂😅 ," so you want it tax free and a receipt to clame on your TAX " I always just laugh 😅, doing a great job, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Coil bind on that A-series as others have pointed out. I've seen that happen with American V8s when builders end up playing component salad from a catalog based on what the customer wants or from not being ultra careful. Talking to A-series veterans may help.
i went to school with my local machine shop and head guy, when i have him do work for me, i don't expect any favors or special treatment and i grew up with him basically. but he does rush for me and gives me a discount all because he knows I'm not expecting it. i know his in business to make money, not coddle me.
Only time that I EVER broke a rocker Tower after installing a stage 1 cam, was caused by NOT having the proper springs
Great video. Great to hear you talking about the business and sharing the knowledge.
I didn't get my engineering HNC until I was 45 .I'm an ex Pressed Steel/Austin Rover /BMW jig toolmaker.watching your channel i do pick up on the measuring equipment that you use daily in so much aa how do you know that your torque wrenches, dti's, straight edges are calibrated and within tolerance and ok to use. Engineering has changed from using old skills which are being lost to new tech skills. I went from toolroom to BIW vehicle assembly back to toolroom then the business changed due to age of skilled people leaving /passing away to being involved in a travelling team that consisted of design build install of new and modified tooling at customer plants. All using old skills of making nice new tooling actually work. Its surprising what skills that you rapidly learn ,eg the science of spot welding via the weld institute to reduce weld spatter injuries to operators . Enough of my rambling .enjoy the videos especially the k series builds (mgf owner)
Excellent video I like the chat between yourselves.Lee any news on the merchandise.?
just a thought are the push rods slightly to long and breaking the rockers, thanks for the video
Lee, i hear what you are saying about making and losing friends. the real question i ask you is "are these friends or acquaintances".
here's a little tale. a family i know just reopened after the son took over. he temporarily closed the business while he reset the business. he has gone almost 100% digital, i.e. everything is done and communicated via email and website. this has seemed to upset many of the older generations as they are not as efficient on computers as the younger. but he claims that he has better flows and accountability for both himself, his team and his clients/customers, as there is written evidence of what has been requested. any phone communication is followed up with an email, and he asks within that for confirmation before proceeding. he has claimed that he is currently more profitable with accounts being paid. there is less downtime, and wastage than when his father was running the business.
Customer complains about you - probably the short trousers. Appreciate the higher camera angles for sure 🙂
Issac.
I totally get where you're coming from about college, I've always been more practical than academic too. But trust me get as many Qualifications as you can while you're still in the education system. As once you're out of it it's a massive effort to get back in again
It may take ten or mor years to appreciate the value but if you don't you will regret it then
Make sure you do your level 3
The more paperwork the better
Hello there Lee and Isaac .... OK, Morris 1000 Broken Rockers .... Thinking Outside the Square .... New Cam, Different Profile and Lift ..... ALL 4 Rockers Broken, ONLY on the Exhaust Valves..... !!!!!!! Isn't maybe that the Valve Springs are now becoming 'Spring Bound' and can't be compressed any more as they are in the 'Solid' condition. Could be Wrong Springs, pulled of of the Box. I have Heard of this, but have not experienced it myself.... Must say I have been 'Close' on my Many Mini's with HOT Cams .... :-) :-) :-) Lee, .....Isaac is one of those Rare Find These days.... I see a Great Future for Isaac.... Just Love his 'Attitude' ....... Best to ALL from ChCh, NZ
The problem is he has Valve piston contact That is causing the problem, Timing ? He needs to check if he has coil binding if he runs it and checks the position of the rocker Arms and try changing the gap of the valve Clearance but more likely he has a cam Timing issue
The customer is King, be a little flexible with the private customers, Garages etc will try it on and delay payments.
Any luck sourcing that Perkins crankshaft? You might need to get one from the States.
I don't agree that you have no friends in business. I would hope that many long-term customers also become friends. That is not to say that no customer will ever try to take advantage. I think there is a balance to find.
For every fan you'll make a hundred foes.
1: Did you do the work you were asked to do? , 2: Did you supply the parts he asked you to obtain or did you recommend the replacement camshaft? If you recommended the replacement camshaft you had at least a moral obligation to inform the customer of any risks or special requirements associated with that part, in this case the timing issue. If the customer specifically asked you to acquire the camshaft at his own wish then it's up to him to get that specific information. Best example is the Landrover engine in the shop. You took on the work but informed the customer that the part to be fitted wasn't OEM and therefore would not have any warranty cover. Your responsibility lies ultimately with the quality of your work and any parts that you replace. If parts fail because they were badly manufactured then all costs should be covered by the manufacturer of those parts. Now to the sticky stuff. If you take a manufactured part and change it without the knowledge or consent of the manufacturer then it becomes your responsibility. e.g. you mill a piston without consulting the min. sizes and tolerances acceptable by the manufacturer. Cover yourself by stipulating in writing what liability you are prepared to take and any exceptions where the decision becomes the liability of the customer. Only do the work and use the parts that you are prepared to put the name of your company behind.
Issac, get all the schooling and qualification you have the opportunity.
When I was a youth, neighbor boys baby sat us. The older brother eventually got a job with the Canadian government, working on the DEW Line. This was the Distant Early Warning radar installations in the far north, operated in conjunction with the US during the Cold War. To keep the young men busy during their off hours, the government paid for correspondence courses. Because the government was paying, they got to see exam results. This young man did very well with his studies, so the government would come to him with a proposition for more training, which he accepted. When he finished that he would get a promotion. Eventually they sent him to university for computer sciences. He eventually ended up as head programmer for a major government department with a rather large salary.
Myself, I have 3 journeyman tickets; automotive mechanic, heavy duty mechanic, and instrumentation mechanic.
The high Lift Cam's making the Valve springs bottom out before Cam 's hitting Top Dead Centre,, Refit basic cam , problem solved .
Head and block skimmed, high lift cam. Push rods wrong length?
It’s a cliche but … “sorry but it’s just business” isn’t a phrase you need to be shy of using. You’re going the right way - so much clearer for everybody, and then you earn more kudos for coming to an arrangement when something does come up that’s on you. Start on the front foot not the back 👍
Strong right wrist 🤔 😮 😂 ❤
🤣🤣
Is it getting coil bind with an uprated high lift camshaft ?
When there was a local garage , I would get friends and family rates , how's the milling machine repair
#@ 10minute mark ...As Stevie Wilson ( Scotland's meanest man) once said , " it's not that I'm actually mean , I just see money as my old friend, and when I spend it , it's like I'm saying goodbye to my old friends . " And " I don't know why they hate me in the local pub , I mean , just because when it was my round , and I bought a packet of wine gums and offered to share them out , doesn't mean I was trying to be funny or anything"
🎉
Sounds like the cam has too much lift and coil binding the springs.
Tell him to check for spring bind ?
Those Mitsubishi L200's are known to crack heads around valve seats
Firstly, in business you don't have friends or family, only customers. On the subject of the Morris Engine if there is no contact between valves and pistons what sort of valve springs is he using and do the valve guides stand at the correct height.
Young or old I don't care as long as they do a proper job with clear invoicing and breakdowns. A bit of banter is always good. But I can't stand listening to companies larging themselves up expecting you to fall for it. Or giving them a budget and then being told it's now a couple of grand or something over without being warned first.
Lee, About a year ago you were offered some machinery from the USA, did anything ever come of it.
Re broken rockers ,,, my immediate thoughts ,,,, do they rev to 9k 😮😉🤭🤭🤭
Have they done that land rover engine yet? I’m sure Lee went out for a timing kit 3 weeks ago 😅
It’s done, just waiting for yet another special tool, so we can fit the crank sensor ring… once that’s on it’s gone!
As he fitted uprated valve springs on the A series? Or fitted an extra washer under the valve spring?
Definitely not a good idea to say to anyone 'there's no rush'.
on the other hand I've had people say to me 'no rush' then a couple of days later they're on the phone
saying are you coming soon to start that job. 😂
How much different would it he if he brought the car or engine to your shop, and maybe brought lunch with it?
Never back down Lee set out the warranty and don't move
You guys should be able to do new job cards and get customers sign-offs on walkin drop offs etc too, when the other is out, AS YOU'LL FIND MANY PLAY One off against the other..
Keep it so Isaac can manage all, so if for e.g. Lee shuts his bollocks in his Lambo door!😢😂 It's at admin level I refer to.
If Isaac didn't have certain trade skills to complete work those can be temp secured. Aim for that!!??
What’s ya PayPal for the small ring compressor 😂
You didn't supply an assembled engine so its up to him to supply the engine to you.
Isaac is lucky to have a mentor who cares
Hi Guys. Not so much changed but evolved the business
The whole idea of being friends with someone who runs a business is because you want to support them by paying them to do a good job in return.
What is your plan for when John retires? It seems he is the only one who can do the crank grinding and at 70 he won't be there forever.
Good to stick to your guns Lee. Your a business man not a hobbiest.
Glad to see you still find time to shave you legs.
The car enthusiast world is full of idiots. When it's a non standard build they all think of themselves as engine builders but the only place that's a true engine builder is the machine shop.
My title wasn’t click bait. I don’t believe it 😂😅
i have seen a series with shims under rocker posts, stop springs getting coil bound maybe
Jeez - 2 years? Wow!
My right wrist is strong nothing to do with holding the camera tho 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I helped a friend with a p6 did the same broke a couple off rocker arms we put another rocker shaft on complete broke another one turned out our local machine shop hadn't put the valve guides in at the correct height hence valve cap hitting top off guide
Crickey Isacc's two years now ,that a few more grey hairs ta.
Stage 1 cams on a 1000 Morris.. Sir? Add double Crower valve springs too? Make sure the valves won't float at 9000 rpm LOL 🤣
👍👍
Wrong cylinder head. A series hits the side of bore. I've done that myself
Sound like he's running to much boost maybe recommend running a smaller shot of NOS as well . Hope that helps guys love john isle of wight
Is there any trickle of long term hope that the vat tax will be softened? It's crazy how much you guys get robbed. I'm not from there so don't know the specifics but sounds worse than usa taxes
VAT is not money off profit, it's additional tax charged after all margin calculations have been made - the key is to make your margin calculations correctly.
Excuse repeated comment my internet kept loosing connection
has isaac not got a girlfriend 🤔😂😂
Anyone that enjoys the channel wont give a toss about the click baiting, sit back and enjoy
Don’t call punters mate
Yer only mates if you’ve been each others gaff or been out drinking etc…. 🥷🏿🇬🇧
Re broken rockers ,,, my immediate thoughts ,,,, do they rev to 9k 😮😉🤭🤭🤭
He's spoken for, alas young lady!
