Geez man!! You can make anything out of anything. I know who I'm getting a hold of during a apocalypse!!!

Hell yeah man, make it happen. I was getting that same lathe vibration when I tried to shorten an 8.8 axle, but it was cutting terrible and loosening the chuck nut. Even with a carbide tool

Much more fun and satisfying working on a idea of your own. Now for the real world acid test..... I'm confident in your plan.

Those ends look the business. They should work well.
    I remember that gearbox.
I converted my legacy to 2wd after watching your conversion vid.
accelerates faster now, but It's still slow as hell, haha

Cool project, reminds me of my thing. I took and put a obxt 5 speed in a old GL. For my purposes I machined a clip in stub axle to accept the spring clip and plug in. I also machined an STI differential to fit in the 5mt. It only needs 5mm take off each side IIRC and then it drops in. It's a helical LSD and the car now skips at full lock in parking lots 😎

Oh wow! Cool stuff man. Love to hear your out there doing stuff like this too. I was told the spiders/carrier might be my weak point of my transaxle so that's cool to know you made an STi diff fit. Something ill keep in mind if I grenade this thing

@@spankranchgarage It's not a direct fit, has to machined a bit, but the spacing between the axles and the ring gear is 100% same same. So it's an easy retrofit.

This video is obviously fake! It’s not 6:09 p.m.! Not even close! It’s 1:20p.m.!

If you start using east coast time and finish on mountain time it’ll go quicker.

you may find out that those type of cv's won't have enough travel for the extreme angle you have on your axles. if you don't you will have to go to the non-plunging type 930 cv they have quite a bit more travel and are stronger because of that. AS far as I know they can only be purchased from RCV. They are around 300.00 dollars each.

I suspect he might be using both telescopic shaft and the plunge CVs to get that articulation. Doubtless he's already done the math for all this, plunge and flex

They wont work for the current angle setup, BUT I am looking to make 3 changes to help with this. I am moving the wheels back another 3-4 inches. Lowering transaxle ~ 2". Finally with the help these CV cups and custom bearing side stubs (Coming soon) I should be able to add about 2" in shaft length. With all this combined I am hoping to stay under 20 degrees of CV angle throughout a pretty impressive suspension travel range. But we will see! I have a lot of work to get to that point.

Very cool man that turned out super nice i really enjoy when you bust out the machining. I got a 10" Atlas lathe so i feel your pain with that haha

This thing teaches me lessons in tool pressure and stiffness daily. Things that I never considered using bigger lathes are made wildly obvious on these old things. Its kind of becoming fun to see what kind of parts I can pull off with it. Mines really beat, sloppy, bent lead screw, broken tooth on carriage traverse gear, etc. Its a good time! I Any lathe is better than no lathe!!

@@spankranchgarage yeah I've torn my down to try make a new cross slide with no compound so it's a bit more rigid, I also got a 2.2kw motor with vfd and electric lead screw which I hope will bring it all up to date a bit, it's way quieter like this already lol
