Another HUGE feat and win in the bush,I did my 450's recoil springs and put new seals in my tensioners both sides in my driveway and it was a large job...well done again...Respect
I sure learned that one the hard way. The tap roots went really deep but I was surprised to see they weren't all that large once I got it out. Its amazing how a few deep 2-3" roots can hold that tree in the clay

I have a 550C of the same vintage. A super useful machine for taking out stumps and pushing boulders but it takes alot of welding, grinding, and cussing to keep her running.
@@spankranchgarage first project is to get in there and figure out what’s wrong with the left side steering clutch. Not being able to turn without going in reverse is quite the headache.
I have a 450B loader, this has always been one of my biggest fears all the old timers would ask me if I tossed a track yet, so far the worst I had was out in the woods on a steep hillside the main hydraulic line under the machine got ripped out wouldn’t move forward with the bucket jammed in the ground so I was able to back it out of the wood to a flat place to work on it. it emptied the reservoir but got me where I needed to be
@@spankranchgarage I've had several of those 450s after a while you learn the shortcuts that work. You've done a good job bringing that one back to working shape. Keep after her, she will do you a good job.
That was the first thing I tried. The idler was really jammed up the blade didnt have enough power. But thats a great tip for otherwise loosening the track when things arent so broken and twisted up
That is a pine tree stump that you’re playing with. They can sometimes have a taproot that will go down anywhere between 10 and 15 foot deep. The base of will be the size of the stomp and I will narrow the deeper it goes. They’re not that easy to dig up with a big track hoe
Yeah I learned my lesson on this one. I don't want to mess with Pine trees anymore. Luckily I dont have many. This tap root was only 4-5" thick about 6 feet down, but in this WV clay it was really holding strong. I dug as much out by hand as I could and cut the taps with a sawzall. Then I was finally able to put a chain around the top and get her to come over. Much bigger job than I expected!
I would love to know. I am sure I wasn't using the machine in the best way, but there is evidence that the tensioner was cracked before I brought the machine here. I have a feeling that this dozer spent most of its life on flat land, so working in the mountains is going to exploit its weaknesses
@@spankranchgarage ' your pins and bushings are wore out, and it will come off again in a bad spot.. you are looking at a new under carriage in the near future
@@catman13131313 Yeah I know that. I need to get 100 or so hours out of it to justify new chains and sprockets/rollers. I think it will be okay if I stay off the steep slopes.

Just so you know I think the track tensioner grease zerk has a check ball bearing hiding in the grease under the zerk. I have lost a few. I have seen like 10 youtube vids of loosening the track tension and the ballbearing falls out and tinks the track and no one ever knows the check ball was there. I have a 1982 450c and i know someday i will be in your shoes. I use my 450 to push snow mainly. I got over 100 inches last winter. The crazy thing is with 16'' track pads it will walk on top of the snow. My friend has a wide track it floats on snow and they made a super wide track it must be able to walk on water.lol P.S next time you need to push the idler back use the 6 way blade just cut a log to fit and pivot the blade. Thats my 2 cents. Good luck great stuff
For some reason this tensioner doesnt use a ball under the grease port. It has a tapered seat like a brake caliper bleeder screw. Perhaps its aftermarket. I havent had a chance to push snow with this machine yet but good to know they do it well! Thanks for watching
@@spankranchgarage I'm looking in book right now the jd450 page 60-2 in the parts manual part #R42849 ball. Normal zerk without the ball works but will loosen up much faster sometimes. I did see the plug you pulled out it may be different/ aftermarket. or older design. good luck great show.
LOL i was wondering how those track pad bolts came out so ez with that small impact gun. Grease and or copper antiseize a mechanics best friend. help a future mech grease a bolt :0 ur the future mech:)
I had this side apart before and greased them. Maybe its a blessing this side was the one that broke.... The left side hasnt been apart in over 20 years id imagine

You've learned a hands on lesson of what you call a pine tree's tap root! The do not have a shallow root system.

@@hunterwommack5014 Classic JD dry clutch things. Check for oil contamination and check adjustment. You might get lucky!... but usually not

Ugh yeah old timers always ask me that too. At least I got it out of the way on the first job! I guess part of running old machines is fixing them.
There will be a huge tap root or two in the center. It’ll come out try pushing it in a circle

Pine trees have tap roots very hard to dig up your backhoe is better option pushing on stumps will tear Dozier up

Use the blade to put a piece of log between the blade and the truck shove it back. Use a chain on the blade to pull it back up.

Your exactly right. I've dug most of the day with a backhoe to remove pine stumps. Some 10ft down and still have a huge taproot.

I rebuilt most of the rest of the machine but I didn’t get too deep into the tracks and idlers
