Frank Sinatra is one of those things only a few lucky people got to witness first hand. The man dripped with swagger, was an absolute gentleman. He also suffered from major depressive disorder, and possibly bipolar disorder despite that he hung around with anyone no one was above him. He stood up for minorities sometimes getting arrested, and he happened to be extremely vocal about treating EVERYONE with respect and dignity. This Arrangement by Nelson Riddle is got to be the greatest, at 2:42 the lead trumpet, Conrad Gozzo takes it to the stratosphere, I write big band charts, and did a great tour with the HRT Jazz orchestra of Croatia, their lead trumpet was right up there with this guy. Frank is killin it on this one, so glad I got to see him in San Francisco, in his prime.
Conrad Gozzo was not the lead trumpet, for unfortunately he was dead 2 years before this recording ; not to mention that he sounded bigger and fatter, but didn't play higher than high G according to what i've heard.

What an arrangement. Sooo many subtleties from the violins to the harp, the organ and piano... and that's not mentioning all the brass that's simply just kickin' ass. Nelson Riddle's music was as made for Frank Sinatra's voice as vice versa. What an incredible combination. I'm thankful my dad introduced me to all of the standards. There will never be another era like it.
If it's what you live to do, it becomes like second nature. You might get nervous about being up to it right before a gig, but for a guy like Sinatra the stage was his home. His instincts would have kicked into gear the moment he got up there. Most of us don't ever learn that ability, as it only comes from years of experience.
There will never be another Frank Sinatra period.!!!! I'm a black man from an urban environment, it's not that color matter, I'm just stating this song is classic badass no matter who listen to it , and luck be a lady tonight when I role the dice. Every1be safe during this pandemic.
This is a time, when Frank was 50 years old and he didn't need to blow on any dices, because he was the owner of the Sands. Frank Sinatra was not a criminal nor a gangster like some people might have thought he was. This was all a myth. The mob came to him because of his charismatic energy, just like the rest of the world, who was addicted to him at the time. He was an artist, with a big generous heart. His personna was just a front or an act to all the rest of the people. ❤❤❤❤
What I don't understand is why would any producer/director ever overlook the genius that is Frank Sinatra and choose a rookie like Brando to talk-sing this amazing song. Baffles me
Love Sinatra. Especially stories of his generosity to those who needed help. Ava Gardner went broke and asked Frank for help. She said his check was generous that she never had to worry about money again. After being divorced fo 30 years
So so true . The time keeping is so difficult because Sinatra sung with feel - which involved singing across the bar lines and to a certain extent actually ignoring the timing of the song completely. All to the good because he dominates every song.
Best Vegas song ever. Many versions of this song have been recorded, but once you hear Sinatra's version...it's obvious he owns it. Frankie was "the man".
What an orchestra! What a voice!! Once in a century (or more) talent. How lucky some of us were to have been around when Frank was in his prime. WOW!!!! What's wrong with the 62 people who put a thumbs down!! They have zero ability to hear the genius. Also, they must be completely tone deaf.
At~2:35 he turns to the Brass Section and at 2:40 he points upward......I suspect he encouraged the Trumpets to move to a higher octave which they do....and his resulting smile is infectious!
@@mariahcarey9470 Very purposely so. Otherwise an additional take would have been done. Sinatra turns towards the brass in anticipation of it and smiles contentedly at the result!
Apparently, he shaped his voice, singing to perfection over his career. He was the perfect showman. Timing etc...., perfect. And, yeah, he was a man's man...and that is rare today.
This was 1970 and believe it or not this special that came on television was Frank coming out of retirement. So I would say Frank Sinatra's peak would have been 1960
A talent from an era never to be matched or arrive again...Thank god for Frank Sinatra and the legacy he gifted the entire planet...Your music is needed more than ever...God bless to the heavens that have you...
Indeed, it seems that this is Billy May's arrangement (the 'Sinatra '65' album). Sinatra did perform it in concert with Riddle's band and with Quincy Jones leading the Count Basie Orchestra in Las Vegas.
This song is timeless... Frank was an amazing talent... and there is something about a big band orchestra. ... then there's the instrumental at 2:29... Those horns...
The way he looks at the trumpets, points up to the ceiling and and even stops dancing for a second to take in the screaming trumpet, just to turn around and smile from ear to ear really warms my heart as a trumpet player.
It's nice that Frank did these videos where he just belted out the songs without his usual wisecracks or omissions or comments to the bandleader and such - just the song, straightforward and in classic style. Great stuff.
Whatever you think of the lyric (I'm unsure myself), I believe the musicianship is great. My favourite part is the expectant Frank pointing towards the direction of the trumpet player who subsequently belts out those high notes, much to the former's delight.
I just love how, because he was denied singing this song in the movie, when he eventually got to record it (for Reprise Repertory Theater) he made sure it blew all previous versions out of the water by a country mile. If there is ever a better encapsulation of Sinatra at the height of his powers, I don't know what it is.
His stage presence, his movements and gestures, that voice with that orchestra is just simply awesome. Arguably one of the greatest ever.

"Ladies and gentlemen, Mister Nelson Riddle and his orchestra."
Sinatra in his element and still on top of his game then.
Had a welcome pass in every hood in america because he was a real one.Salute Mr.Sinatra.
Best Vegas song ever. Many versions of this song have been recorded, but once you hear Sinatra's version...it's obvious he owns it. Frankie was "the man".
His stage presence is overwhelming!
Gary Goodrich
Every one of those band musicians knew right then there they were playing alongside a LEGEND.
At~2:35 he turns to the Brass Section and at 2:40 he points upward......I suspect he encouraged the Trumpets to move to a higher octave which they do....and his resulting smile is infectious!
You’re totally right 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
But it sounds squeaky and shrill when they go up
Not up an octave but play louder was the signal he gave.
@@mariahcarey9470 Very purposely so. Otherwise an additional take would have been done. Sinatra turns towards the brass in anticipation of it and smiles contentedly at the result!
Damn you dont find singers or actors like this anymore. classy gentleman.
Impeccable stage presence!
I am always so impressed by the superb orchestral arrangements…and Mr Sinatra praised them highly too. What class man !
Apparently, he shaped his voice, singing to perfection over his career. He was the perfect showman. Timing etc...., perfect. And, yeah, he was a man's man...and that is rare today.
He's said to be the best phraser in the biz
just one of many reasons he's probably the greatest entertainer that ever lived
Class Personified
This is Sinatra in his Prime👌👌👌❤️
This was 1970 and believe it or not this special that came on television was Frank coming out of retirement. So I would say Frank Sinatra's peak would have been 1960
@@misterjones7522 this is 1966
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD " Greatest voice ever! "
A talent from an era never to be matched or arrive again...Thank god for Frank Sinatra and the legacy he gifted the entire planet...Your music is needed more than ever...God bless to the heavens that have you...
my best singer ever
Talk about killing it. The man was beautiful!
The Old Man at his best. Unmatched ever since. Totally encapsulates a bygone era when everything was better, classier.
Oh my God! This man, his voice, his presence are nothing but unadulterated 'sexy'!
Frank Sinatra is one of the greatest artists in the history of the planet!! HANDS DOWN
Loved this man forever and ever. Have all his CD’S. Miss him so much. RIP Frank!
Simply the best. Sinatra, Nelson Riddle, Irv Cottler and finest orchestra ever.
I think this is a Quincy Jones arrangement, although Riddle may be conducting.
I think you'll find the arrangement is a reworking by Quincy Jones of Billy May's original.
Indeed, it seems that this is Billy May's arrangement (the 'Sinatra '65' album). Sinatra did perform it in concert with Riddle's band and with Quincy Jones leading the Count Basie Orchestra in Las Vegas.
Who's playing trumpet sitting down? Pete and Conte Candoli is one guess.
Let's not forget Billy May. He did the arrangement for this song.
The man and his orchestra are on fire.🔥🔥🔥
Simply amazing. Untouchable class and elegance - just unmatched in today's world.
This song is timeless... Frank was an amazing talent... and there is something about a big band orchestra. ... then there's the instrumental at 2:29... Those horns...
No one come closer to this guy
I'm just here for my daily dose of Sinatra and the grooving band behind him!
The immortal Sinatra
The way he looks at the trumpets, points up to the ceiling and and even stops dancing for a second to take in the screaming trumpet, just to turn around and smile from ear to ear really warms my heart as a trumpet player.
I dont know if Frank ever sung with such force, power, and grace!
His hands...never without purpose. Frank was pure perfection!
Todos os dias ouço ele e vejo seus vídeos.
It's nice that Frank did these videos where he just belted out the songs without his usual wisecracks or omissions or comments to the bandleader and such - just the song, straightforward and in classic style. Great stuff.
James when it came to recording sessions or tv specials...he made sure EVERYTHING was PERFECT.
Whatever you think of the lyric (I'm unsure myself), I believe the musicianship is great.
My favourite part is the expectant Frank pointing towards the direction of the trumpet player who subsequently belts out those high notes, much to the former's delight.
Why would you be unsure it's pretty straightforward if you can read between the lines
I just love how, because he was denied singing this song in the movie, when he eventually got to record it (for Reprise Repertory Theater) he made sure it blew all previous versions out of the water by a country mile. If there is ever a better encapsulation of Sinatra at the height of his powers, I don't know what it is.
This is as good as it gets. X
