- If you're on the go and want to play your Nintendo Switch on a larger display than the tiny 6-inch to 7-inch screen that is built into the console, you're in luck if you have a USB-C iPad. With an app and a couple of accessories, you can use your iPad as your Switch display or even with your PS5 & Xbox too.

I’ve used this for setting up a Raspberry Pi, and for manual focus on a DSLR.
What kind of capture card brand are you using if you don't mind sharing. I'm actually looking high quality capture card to connect Raspberry Pi too.
This is GREAT INFO and will help a number of people in certain situations and won’t for others. The tech is there and thanks, Dan, for showing us how it all works!
I feel like Apple will find a way to block this.
I don’t think so. They added support for this because of external cameras and webcams so they basically are encouraging it to be used as a monitor
What?! 😂😂😂
Nintendo: _You said?_
Or nintendo
@@Cyrus_got_verified in order for Nintendo to block this they would have to block video out and that makes the dock pointless. Apple and Nintendo do weird things but neither of them care what monitor you use
I didn’t realize my magic keybpard had a extra USB-C port - nice!
BIG thank you for this info.
The iOS app, Genki Studio works perfect with my Genki ShadowCast Capture Card and Genki Covert Dock Mini. Now I can play my Switch on my iPad Pro M2, paired with my Apple Magic Keyboard.
Followed your instructions and works perfect.
It doesn’t need to be only game consoles
It can also be TV boxes
DAM THE BETA IS FULL
Seems better as an external display on the go.
I saw DURRY on your mix, they are my fav band and I have seen them live 4 times
Could the latency be from the dongle? Maybe a high end dongle will cause less latency/lag?
Yes! capture cards cause some latency, I don't think higher ends Change much, if anything
Finally i can bring my switch on the go! /s
very original & funny
@MacRumors The TestFlight BETA is full as it says on the website. Any other apps or alternatives to this?
Orion
works great on my 2024 iPad Pro
Does anyone know if absolutely need a capture card or can we get by with an cord that has HDMI on one end and USB-C on the other? Thank you in advance!
Anyway to do this now that we can’t use the test flight capture pro
What if my iPad is Lightning rather than USB C?
Well, unfortunately, I don't think you will be able to do this then.
Just afraid about input lag but if it s okay best news ever
Anyone that is already in this please send me a code to get in
Does this work on the iPad airs or only the pros?
On ANY device with USB-C, only. Find out what model you have and search up if it has a USB-C port.
i have a hdmi to usb a video capture card that i use for obs so can i just get a usb a to usb c translator and plug that into the ipad?
Tried using this set up with the same dongle from amazon and a usb-c to hdmi cable as well with my switch and just getting color lines as output on my iPad. Any advice? I am on IPadOS 17 and using the new app from the developer
This dongle does that when the signal comes on or goes off. If you simply unplug the hdmi cable and plug it back into the dongle it’s fixed. (At least my unit which has the same issue)
Can you do it without the stand?
I want to try this ..got everything needed but says I need a code to use test flight app
I have iPad 4gen ISO 17.1.1 and i have HDMI adapter from APPLE AND UGREEN not working
Hi! You can share your controller? I want buy this. 🙏
so you need to plug the console to the wall anyways to get hdmi out (yes even the switch) then whats the point? you d be better off with a cheap monitor. 24 inch is like $100. speaker sucks just as bad.
what's the mario game at the beginning of the video
I have no sound
L bozo
@@WaydeGamingu don’t have to type that reply it’s kinda stupid ngl
Is there an app available that is available in the appstore? Not the beta
came studio
camo*
@@ayushkumarsinha4353how do you use it
If this usefully i think Apple and Nintendo can be big friend of the world game
What’s the resolution with this setup ?
The usb c wont fit i have the 8th generation and google said it would work
does anybody know if i can use this trick w my laptop? if not, do u know any methods to use my laptop as a monitor for consoles?
Thank you for the advice and tips. I used my laptop for my capture card😊
That app doesn’t work anymore. Is there any other app to play switch on iPad?
Will this work for a Nintendo Switch Lite? 😭🙏🏼
Could you make it so then you put it on
I hope apple doesn’t shut this down. They are known for hating.
What is the app called
Can I use the 120hz screen for the Xbox series x ?
The testflight beta is full. :-(
could my usb c dock work if it has an cdmi port on it?
Can you screen record
I try this
This is actually good news...
that what im looking for
They said the beta is full 😢
In all my years, I can NEVER find this “link” people talk about in videos. I’m even open an iPad!
Have you tried pressing it in, idk, the description???
Okay so my iPad doesn't have USB c... It has the port before that, can I still do this??
Idk
Probably
Samsung tab can do this wireless
Can it run 120 fps?
This Is Just for Apple products?
Can ipad air 3 lightning port do this bro?
No, lightning will never support it
Test flight say I need a invite code
Thank you for the video! Can this be done on an android tablet?
Big Like 👍
The lag is probably from the $20 capture card.
No exact input lag? 🤦🏻♂️
Why?
Have been using this with my Macbook using OBS and I knew I could do this with iPad too but it was really missing a software. Glad we finally have an app for it. Will test this out as I already have HDMI dongle
Which app pls tell me!
me too pls
😢
please tell me the app
@@AndrewMMulqueen the app in the video isnt availible anymore but you can use orion
Watched 20+ of these exact same videos...all say the same thing...NONE tell you that Capture Pro is no longer available , due to all beta tester slots being taken. :-(
I found an app called HDMI Monitor - Orion which works the same way and isn't a silly beta. Give that a try.
I can’t access to capture pro app. The beta is full 😩
Same
Sooooo, idk if you care anymore since you comment this, but the app IS officially on the App Store and it’s called “Genki Studio.” Same app developer with same features. Hope this helps
Just a quick note, you have to use the power adapter that came with the console or you’ll get an error message saying “use AC power adapter that came with console” only sharing cause it happened with me when I was trying to connect my switch. Other than that everything else in this video is legit and helpful
yeah switch only supports docked mode with external power
I can‘t download Capture Pro, because it says „Beta is full“. What should I do now?
Dang I bought all that stuff and didnt realize the beta app was FULL :(
SAME!!! I am so disappointed 😢
@@windycity92no need for beta now, plenty of options
Seems rad. would love to use this to have my ipad as an external edit display. Given the workflow, seems like it should work!
You are not explaining the app part very well. TestFlight ok, got it but what about the part where we have to receive an invitation from a developer ? The app is asking for a code to continue, which one ?
I had the same problem 😢
This would be more useful for something like the Xbox Series S than the Switch that already has a screen lol
It’s not just the larger display. With this setup, the Switch runs in docked mode, which has more power, so the games look better. Some games are almost unplayable in handheld mode due to the low resolution, so for those games this setup is a pretty good portable solution.
Perhaps, but, honestly... I have my switch on the go and my iPad on the go but I really feel like the Switch's screen is too small so... This may be a reasonably option for me in a mobile situation. I'm not likely to haul my full sized console around and I can't plug that console in easily on the go even if I did. So I an def see some uses for this.
Yeah but the screen ain’t 12.9 inches is it
The Switch does already have a screen, but it sucks in comparison to the iPad screen. This also allows the Switch to run in docked mode, allowing for better performance and a better-looking game overall. This is just better.
Nope, that screen sucks, and an iPad would help
is there any other app that works similar to Capture Pro? it says the beta is full 😭😭
2:55 how can i download this app ?
I downloaded and ran the test flight and I get a notification to enter the developer invitation code
Me too, I’m confused as well…
Is a video capture card different than an HDMI to USB-C cable?
It is saying "This beta is full" for the testflight, are there any other apps to try on iOS 17 devices?
I wonder if you could plug in a Steam Deck directly into the iPad via a USB-C cable. Can anyone test this out who has the hardware for it?
I don't THINK it does. Every mention of this feature requires the capture card.
Pretty cool to use the mini-led on switch games (speaking of the regular switch, not the oled).
In android is usb camera pro is an app use with usb capture card ....... used this with my Samsung galaxy note 10.1 n8000......see when apple fan boy are talking about this outdated features in android..... apple shame on you
Can newer MacBooks do this?
ANY device with USB-C can do this.
Nintendo and Apple running to the closest lawyer buffet to sue you.
Input lag kills this as an option pretty quick. I don't really get people that can pretend input lag is ever acceptable. Cool as a last resort though.
Have you tried it yourself? I am still wondering about the input lag, which could kill the usefulness of this for most gaming if it's too bad.
Gaming isn't the only thing one could use this for though. External display for a camera, second monitor to your non-Mac computer, or main for Steam Deck's desktop mode or a Raspberry Pi!
This is great. I am sure someone like small rig will come out with an iPad case that has a capture card built in and then use this as a camera monitor. Just like the seemo thing
Is this working on a litghtning port too? (with the right adaptors)
Does this mean it’s possible to capture video from your iPad for content creation?
the latency is not tolerable, even on my M1 macbook pro.
Took someone long enough to reverse-engineer Andy Febon’s UVC capture solutions.
I Wanna Connect Nitendo Swicth Lite
How do I charge the ipad?
YES NOW I CAN PUT ON NEW MODS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This doesn’t work that app doesn’t even exist anymore
its on app store now called Genki Studio
The link says that the beta is full..
I kinda forgot to get a video capture I have the wrong one it won’t work I will get it
Is there any other app?
Orion
This is amazing once I can I would ask for the lil dock add on and attach to my iPad then I can begin with playing I just have to know which app to get so I can use it
thats not a capture card dude geez do some research
The product quite literally has the words video capture card on it but go on... please tell me how much more research I need to do
it is a capture card. it captures an hdmi signal and converts it to UVC which the iPad understands
technically its a video capture device, a video capture card is something you slot in your computer, but tbh that difference doesnt really matter.
Does this work with non M1 iPads (have a pro 2020)
Great question, i want to know this too. Im still rocking the 2019 😅
it should if it has USB C... but I havent tested it
Now that iPad and iOS 18 beta is here there’s many apps for that like Orion HDMI and stuff
Any way to use a power bank? If anyone with a power bank supporting 45w output would test it would be wonderful.
It worked for me with
- USB-C hub to replace the switch dock. The dock is just an oversized usb hub. The hub I used got power and hdmi, all it needed.
- power brick charging the switch was a 100w charger. My MacBook Pro charger did not work. 33w charger didn’t work either. Think the switch needs 45W or something.
- HDMI from the usb hub goes into the capture card.
- Capture card goes into another usb hub. Just one that allows me to charge the iPad while using it. The Magic Keyboard will also charge the iPad ofc.
- usb hub into the iPad.
This could really be portable if a power bank works. I’m never going to play on the switch screen. Maybe the Oled model’s screen is good enough, but the original screen is not.
I was thinking of just this and then I thought shut about the horrible input lag that might occur. And also how many fps is the capture card allowing is key as well
This is exactly what I'm thinking for my kids rear seat entertainment system for a road trip. Is it working well for you?
ive been looking for a way to use my ipad as a windows second monitor when its on my desk and this is the easist solution i couldve imagined lol
Oh I'll be using that! For my bed mount its easy to just keep the iPad and connect the switch. Thank you!!
Any other apps available right now? I was planningto get a video capture card for this same reason but i cant get the beta for Capture Pro. Any help would be apreciated or even a release date for Capture Pro
Does not work. FULL ???????
Best to just play Switch, PS5 and Xbox games on a Switch, PS5 and PC/ Handheld gaming PC.
Switch is getting cheaper and Handheld PCs double as actual PCs.
