Apple Car Play Hack for Harley Boom Box GTS!

- I found a trick to get Apple Car Play to work on the new Harley Boom Box GTS without having to install a wireless headset interface module (WHIM) and without having to have a Harley stamped Sena wireless Bluetooth headset paired! You don’t need a wired Harley headset connected either to get Apple Car Play to initiate.

When the Boom Box GTS was first announced for 2019 and newer Harley touring models you needed the above items in place to get Apple Car Play to activate. With software updates Harley has recently put out, you can get Apple Car Play to work with a simple trick I found. You don’t need the Harley headsets or the WHIM, but you do need to take your Harley to a dealership so they can plug it into their proprietary Digital Technician II software and check a box to tell your Boom Box that you have a WHIM, even if you don’t. By doing this, it activates Apple Car Play on the Harley Boom Box GTS and you can then begin using it. Don’t forget to go into your Harley Boom Box GTS setting and turn on “projection” mode, so it mirrors your iPhone. And remember that your iPhone has to be plugged directly into the Boom Box USB interface to activate Apple Car Play. It does not work if your iPhone is paired to the Boom Box GTS via Bluetooth. Apple Car Play has much functionality and can be used without a headset and microphone. However, with a headset and microphone, you will get even more functionality such as Siri voice commands. Remember that if you flash your Harley Boom Box for the WHIM, you won’t have to go back to a dealership in the future if you ad the WHIM for wireless Bluetooth headset pairing with your Harley Boom Box GTS. This trick is working with Harley Boom Box GTS software Version MY19.19.03.00. This could change in the future with software updates, so always save each software update version, so you can always revert if necessary.

Ryan, always enjoy your love for riding H-D's and the content you put out. I found this video from John Maxwell's latest video.
You got a couple things wrong here that John clears up in his video. You don't need a WHIM to get the Car play to work (without Digital tech hack). The hard wire headset will work just fine and that doesn't require the WHIM. You only need the WHIM if you want to go wireless. The Street Glides and Road Glides Require a cord that has to be installed to get the female end of the plug to plug in the headset. The limited, and Road Glide Ultra already have this female port to plug in the headset. These bikes also come with a headset so there is no additional expense to use the apple car play at all. The CVO Limited comes with the WHIM Installed and with a wireless headset.
The thing a lot of people don't know is that Apple requires a very involved application process for vehicle manufacturers to go though to get approved for apple car play. Apple wants to make sure that the apple car play user has the best "user experience" possible. They won't allow for that experience to be short-changed by a vehicle manufacturer not facilitating the max functionality of their software and interface. For this reason, unless voice command is active (by having a mic active) the apple car play isn't supposed to work because you don't have the full functionality of the software. So, I don't believe there was a secret update that H-D put out and didn't tell their dealers. I think (speculation) that it's against the agreement H-D entered into with Apple to allow the car play to work without the voice functionality. So the hack is just that - a hack. It isn't a viable option that dealers have been educated on to offer their customers. Anyways, hopefully this sheds a little more light on things. Keep up the vids. Enjoy the ride.
As a side note: At the 2019 Model year Dealer meeting I was told that H-D just barely got the Apple car play approval right before that models were announced. At one point they were worried that they wouldn't even be able to include the apply car play in the GTS because they were still going back and forth with Apple.

Here are the points I want to clear up…..you probably just haven’t followed all my videos & saw this one pop up….I’ve covered everything you say here on this channel in detail at some point.
*You know I love my Harley’s til the end brother as you do, but the Motor Company is in a huge transition trying to figure out their place and legitimacy into the future….I’m not afraid to call them out. I praise them where they do well and am critical when they are failing in areas, in which they are…..there’s a lot of angry, once brand loyal, Harley customers right now……
*Agree, the wired 7 pin HD headset is an option and the WHIM is only for “wireless” headset pairing. I’ve mentioned that numerous times in several other videos on this channel.
* Yes, correct on the 7 PIN DIN Install for Street and Road Glides. It does not come stock with them. We did a free video some time ago on how to install the 7 PIN yourself. That free install video is here ==> ua-cam.com/video/hMhU_vZrfLY/v-deo.html
*Also be aware that on the Street and Road Glides there is not an HD add on kit for a passenger 7 PIN DIN. That frustrates many customers. Only the rider can add one on.
* Correct, I’ve mentioned many times on this channel that the Ultras come with the 7 PIN coms port stock.
* Yes, I’ve mentioned many times in previous videos on this channel that the WHIM comes pre-installed on the CVO models…..Correct
* I agree with you and am knowledgeable about your points with Apple Car Play and the requirements. I’ve said in past videos on this channel that Apple likely requires a microphone for full functionality. Apple is very good at controlling their user experience. That is why I was so surprised that with the latest update you don’t need a microphone to get Apple Car Play to work?
Hopefully this clears up any points I wasn’t clear on in this one particular video. But, I guarantee I’ve covered it all in detail on other videos.

@@RyanUrlacher Thank you so much this video. I was able to get this "hack" applied for $40 and now CarPlay works perfectly.
I bought a brand new 2019 road glide special and the HD phone app doesn't even transfer routes properly to the radio. My dealership even called Harley tech support directly and all we got was that it was a known issue with no ETA for when a software update would be released. That paired with the constant rerouting attempts (admittedly better the 2016 version) has left a lot to be desired when the phone syncing was a major factor that kept Harley in the running against getting another brand of motorcycle.
It leaves you feeling duped when the Harley GTS Radio doesn't work as advertised and in order to use CarPlay you have to plop down close to $1000 with labor and taxes to mirror functionality of the HD Radio that should have worked in the first place.
Existence of this hack sold four Harley motorcycles today that almost ended up being Indians or Goldwings. They weren't considering a Harley before I verified this "hack" worked after I was suppose to lead our group ride and a large number of people watched the ride transfer fail. We then found out later that every 2019 in our pack was also suffering from the same issues unless they had the much older version of the phone app and older radio software.
Ryan Urlacher All good man. I know you know a ton about the boom box. I know you know all those details about the various bikes as well. As a stand-alone video though, I was just very surprised you didn’t mention you could just install a $60 cord with a $180 headset to use the car play. The Whim is not required to use apple car play. Anyways, trust me, my intent wasn’t to defend all the points you made. I complaint about a lot of the same stuff. Take care Ryan.

I went to my dealer today here in Indianapolis and asked them to flash for the WHIM as you described. They asked if I had the WHIM installed yet. I replied that I plan to in the future and want the software to be ready. They charged $55 and I now can activate Apple Car Play when I plug my iPhone to the USB. My hope is to be able to use Car Play on the GTS in lieu of having my iPhone mounted to my handlebars to be able to control SiriusXM and Google Maps, and avoid ever having to purchase a WHIM. I have yet to experiment with my older Sena SMH10 wireless headset to see what functionality I get. Thanks for your videos. They're awesome.
Hi from Mexico City, Ryan! I want to thank you for the video on the hack. I just had my bike flashed as per the video; it worked flawlessly. It took the dealer less than three minutes to get it done. When I told the dealer what to do, they actually they initially thought I was nuts, but together watched your video and they said they were going to try, but were skeptical it would work... Surprise, surprise it worked like a charm. Obviously, Carplay worked with the wired head set, but wirelessly now is great! Thanks again for the time you spent doing all the research and testing, and for making this video. I look forward to watching more of your great videos!

Hi Ryan. I used the information from your video at my H-D dealership and Apple Car Play now works without the headset on my 2019 Roadglide. The dealership was concerned that the procedure could result in confusing the Boombox software and cause it to be dysfunctional. But after two weeks of use there have been no problems and Apple Car Play works fine. Thanks for your research.

Thank you for this video, Ryan. I was on a trip this weekend on my 2019 TriGlide and thought i had Apple Car Play....guess what? NO!!! I guess $35,000 doesn't buy you Car Play. Such greed on the part of HD. I called my Harley dealer and was told i had to buy the Wireless Interface Module...$375 plus installation...so Harley wants another $500 from me. NO WAY!

Took my brand new Road Glide Ultra to the dealer this morning. They were unaware of this method, so did it for me as a test. Worked great to their surprise. With HD headset, all functionality seems fine, so no harm was done by flashing for a WHIM without one installed. With my Lexin Bluetooth wireless synced to iphone, I can receive calls directly and inititate calls by selecting from contacts on the CarPlay interface via touch screen or joystick, and get the non-call CarPlay audio bits (Music, Pandora, etc) through the fairing and trunk speakers. Overall, this is an excellent option for no WHIM and a non-HD wireless headset. Good Job Ryan!!

You mentioned that your headset is bluetooth connected to the phone & works with the phone to make & receive calls, I assume you mean when the GTS is in Radio mode. But does your headset & iPhone still work together when you have GTS Carplay mode activated w/o a whim? My understanding is that headsets must be connected to the radio in order to use voice control/communications when Carplay is active. The GTS Carplay mode takes over your iPhone completely & disables a wireless headset connected to the iPhone.
What is your experience with Carplay mode using a wireless headset connected to the iPhone w/o a whim installed on the radio?
Kevin Morris .... here’s a long answer; but even better news. I can now get CarPlay to play through my wireless headset, with Siri, and no WHIM!! To start, I have a new Lexin B4FM Bluetooth wireless headset on my helmet. I first connect my Lexin to the iPhone via Bluetooth, then connect my phone to the GTS through the USB. I then enable CarPlay on the GTS. At this point all application generated CarPlay audio comes through the bikes speakers, but all phone audio routes through my Lexin headset and mic. Call comes in, CarPlay silences the GTS audio to bike speakers, Lexin answers the call, and I have my conversation. When call ends, GTS resumes playing through bike speakers. At this point, Siri functionality doesn’t work through headset. Not sure why, it just doesn’t. HOWEVER....The best news (which I just discovered thanks to your question and my additional testing) is that pressing the power button twice on my Lexin headset module, tells the iphone to route ALL audio through the B4FM so I now get CarPlay music, calls, prompts and phone calls wirelessly WITH Siri functionality; WITHOUT A WHIM!!!😀😀😀. I’m deliriously happy right now!!! Side note: I have to control audio volume via the headset controls and can’t toggle audio back to bike speakers without cycling the power on the Lexin. CarPlay app selection control still works via bike controls; just not audio volume control.

Great channel! He is so right about how ridiculous it is with the boombox. When you buy.a car stereo, you can pair a smartphone, either it’s an Android or Apple, makes no difference. No whim or flashing needed. and all for a quart of the money needed for a boombox…

I watch this video last night. When I got off this morning I went to Harley Davison. I told them about the video and I wanted them to turn the whim on and they said it had to have a whim before they can turn it on. He even went and asked his service manager about it they said they’ve never heard of this it was $54 to do it and they could not guarantee that it would work. They really did not want to try it but I told him to do it anyway. So when they got done I hooked up my iPhone and I had Apple CarPlay I told him it was working they said on the next update if Harley finds out they probably will change the setting. I told them that was fine. I got Apple CarPlay to work for $54 instead of $800. Thanks for the video
LOL. Sounds typical. EVERYONE SAVE THE CURRENT BOOM BOX SOFTWARE UPDATE!! That way if HD tried to stop this in a future update, you can revert. Once HD takes it off their website it's gone, UNLESS YOU SAVED IT. Always save software updates so you can always revert when stuff breaks with HD updates. It sucks we even have to worry about this.......

I have my 2019 Road Glide Ultra boombox flashed today Harley service asked me if I installed the whim so I answered yes (I lied I do not have a whim) they flashed the boom box I plugged my sena freewire and everything works just perfect just like if I have a whim

Hi Ryan thanks for the help... I just had my dealer flash the software as you suggested and it all works.. I'm running a Packtalk Bold paired to my Iphone and I have fully Siri voice command (Itunes Maps etc) which is awesome so thanks a ton! I do have question, regards using Apple maps as the directions are still coming through the HD speakers and not my Cardo PTB... do I need to do something with the audio rerouting or is this just going to be a limitation (not a big one IMO)... which I find strange in that my Itunes play through my Cardo PTB, just not the map directions... thanks again!

Love your channel, actually it has helped me a lot with the boom box. Only one thing, without the whim, you can make apple CarPlay work by plugging the wired headset that comes with the bike... off course this comes with the huge inconvenience of having that cord hooked in your helmet and the bike. BTW, in my Ultra model I tried to connect the wire headset in the passenger conector to see if CarPlay would work, but it was unsuccessful. Thanks for the videos!!

The “hack” will turn out to be a free trial that they hope will go viral from awesome channels like Law Abiding Biker. After thousands of customers get a taste of using the Car Play they will put out an upgrade that will again disable not being able to use the system without the Harley for purchase equipment needed. Ryan thanks for this hack. Question, with the whim installed it includes the micro usb for the dealer to upload the flash. How does the dealership upload without whim installed? Thanks in advance.
FYI, you can use the HD cb mic if you have the connection port. No headsets neccessary. That port will not work with whim installed.

Hey guys, I love watch these videos the info is great. I have a question I have a 2019 RGS with the Whim but I hate using the headsets so I throw them in the bags and I use CarPlay but is there a setting that will let me use it without the headset since it is already flashed with the WHIM. Thanks
Yes, you can go into the settings and switch from headset to speakers.

Hello friend very nice work, but there is another way to activate in GTS without WHIM, and there is no need to flash is just activate, with proper software, is not flash is just activate !!! If you want I can tell you how, nice work and of course I’m your fan !!
Has anyone else done this exactly as prescribed and not had it work? Updated the software, although the version I have doens’t have the “Y” after the “M’, took it to the dealership, flashed the radio, they checked the WHIM checkbox, I ensured “Projection” was enabled....and ZERO. No CarPlay. Am I missing something?
**UPDATED** Make sure at the dealership when they enable WHIM that they select “Wired” as the CarPlay connection. If they choose “Wireless” it won’t work as I found out above. Second trip back fixed the problem, thanks Ryan!
Hey Ryan, I saw this a few years ago and had it done on my 19RGS and I just added a WHIM and I still had to bring my bike back to Harley to have them re flash my system as it’s not seeing it !!!

Hey Ryan, it's now June 2020 and I talked to two local H-D dealers about what you showed in your video and they both told me that H-D has since pushed an update that blocks the technicians ability to set the microphone to disabled and therefore we must have either a wired headset or a WHIM / wireless headset or CarPlay will not work.
If you see this and could provide an update that would be greatly appreciated!

I think I’ve missed something.
I have a 2019 CVO street glide which already comes with WHIM so I gusee I don’t need to flash anything.
But, no CVO and no WHIM with flash can use Apple car play without the need of the headset.
So why me, having WHIM and the software “ticked” from facroty still need the headset to use apple car play ?
This is a real Harley Davidson style.
Had mine flashed doesn’t work, any advice?
Just seeing this now. Thank you for making these videos. This was so helpful. I am going to stop by my local dealership where I bought the bike and ask them to Flash my Boom Box GTS for the WHIM. We'll see how they react. Keeping my fingers crossed. To be clear....If I update the radio in the future, will this undo the flash for the WHIM? I think I am going to update the system before I go the dealer. Thanks again

@@RyanUrlacher So two years later I got a 2021 SGS. When I asked the same dealer to flash the for carplay they looked at me like I had six heads. Didn't know what I was talking about. I said two years ago you did this for my last bike. They claimed ignorance. I went to four, yes four other dealers all claiming they didn't know what I was talking about. I bought the plug jumper but haven't installed it yet. Do you know if that works on 2021 GTS models? Are the dealers catching on, can you actually still flash the GTS, and are they lying to me?
Just took my 2020 RGS to get it flashed so I could use car play. The tech had never heard of this- not surprised- and we worked on it for about a hour (he said since I was teaching him something we’d figure it out for $$free$$). It looks like a new update has been pushed. We couldn’t get it to work. I guess instead of Slip-Ons I have to buy a WIM.
So glad I found this. I’m going to get this done to my 2020 soon, will update you and let you know if this is still valid info which I’m sure it is.

My 2021 Harley Ultra Limited as long as my Android is plugged into the bike the Android carplay works perfectly fine with any headset phone calls Google Map search while driving no problem
Went to dealership yesterday 6/11/20 to have this done. Harley removed from digital tech. Can only be done now if whim installed

Got to love HD secret meetings. I bought a new 2020 street glide special and it’s not standard. Sucks!
I went to Harley a few weeks ago and they told me that Harley did an update after they found out people where flashing for this and they put a patch in to keep you from being able to do this have you heard of that’s true? I seem to be unable to get them to do this. 2020 Road glide special I just bought in January. I use a half helmet so no headset so I don’t want to buy all the extra wim stuff. Any suggestions?
Ryan I got a new 2020 Tri Glide . Brought it in to get flashed for the whim . $23.00 later I enabled projection . Plugged in my I phone and nada .??? What am I doing wrong . ? I tried to plug in a wired headset to the bike and still nothing ???
No shot you might actually answer this but I'm so confused and you're the only one to get me this far.
I've got a 2020 CVO Limited and I just updated to the newest firmware. Projection is turned on, but when I plug my iPhone in through the USB plug I don't get any sort of carplay options. Is there something else I need to do, or something else I'm missing?

Only the Boom Box GTS that comes on 2019 and newer models has Apple Car Play
Hey Ryan has Harley done an update to cancel out the last update to block us from flashing our radios for the car play.
Yup, they purposely updated software to block that hack. Now you have to definitely buy only their HD headset. That's why many stay with older versions of software. Many won't every update.

HELP: I just installed the “cheat” device on my 2021 Street Glide Special so that I could get CarPlay. My phone has been paired however I am not getting the CarPlay icon on my motorcycle. I’ve doubled checked to make sure the device is plugged in all the way.
My iPhone X is plugged in. I also checked “projection” mode to off in the settings.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Interested in the upgrade for a 2018 model to get the Apple Car Play...will not buy a new bike just to get it

Question, Will the Apple Car Play work when the Sena Freewire is plugged into the 7 pin din? I notice that Apple Car Play does work when the corded Headset is plugged in since the last boom box update.
It will only work if you plug in a Harley stamped 7 pin wired headset.
On my 19 FLTRU CarPlay worked from day one with a wired headset and my phone plugged in.
It should have. That's the way it was designed. to have the WHIM and an HD headset paired or plugged in. Exactly how it was designed. It was made to require you to buy both.
Ryan Urlacher but I don’t have a WHIM. Unless it was factory and I didn’t know it. But everything I have seen says it isn’t factory unless you get a CVO bike.
Vicarious Biker ... CarPlay works only with the corded headset, by design, and requires that the headset actually be plugged in. What you described is the “normal “ approach. This “hack” means you don’t have to plug in the headset cord to get CarPlay and don’t have to actually buy and physically install a whim, or even plug in the headset cord, to get CarPlay working.
Keith Rabun the way I took what he said was that you needed both a WHIM and a headset either wired or wireless.
Vicarious Biker Understood. For my bike without a WHIM, updating the GTS software to MY19.19.03.00 and getting my dealer to turn on the WHIM setting let’s me route ACP audio to my bike’s speakers without having to plug in the corded headset. ACP audio can alternately be sent to my Lexin B4FM Wireless BT headset directly from the iPhone.
Ryan: Thanks for the information in this and all of your videos, keep it up. I have a new 2022 Road Glide Special and I bought a flash tool and flashed the GTS radio myself for the Rockford Fosgate Amp and speakers (the ones not sold with the Harley stamp on them) and it worked out perfectly, and as you mention in this video, I also was able to activate the Apple Car Play by selecting the WHIM option while preforming the flash. So my radio is up and running Apple Car Play and it works perfectly. So my question for you is, would I still benefit from installing a WHIM? I have a Sena 50R (again, not one of the ones stamped and sold by Harley). Is there a way for my Sena and my iPhone to still communicate for phone calls and texts and voice commands while simultaneously having the GTS running Apple Car Play for my music and podcasts and such? I am guessing that I will ultimately just break down and buy the WHIM, and in that case, I expect to "route" the audio for music and podcasts to the bike speakers, but "route" the COM and NAV audio to my Sena headset (I would not be so concerned that the audio for COM and NAV was in mono so long as the music runs thru the bike speakers as I mentioned). Thanks again for your videos!

Ryan, if you already have a WHIM module do you have to unplug it for this to work?? I have a '19 CVO with Factory WHIM. Same software update MY19.19.03.00 but no matter what I do, I still have to have the headset paired and powered on before CarPlay comes up? I am willing to remove the fairing and unplug the module if I have to :)
No, you don't have to unplug your WHIM. Do you have projection on? in settings? If so, unpair your headset completely and try that.
What about today with the new update as of today June 2020
Having problems linking the iPhone XR to 2018 limited. It works Bluetooth but as soon as I plug it in it says no media found. Frustrating!
Looks like this is no longer an option. Guess I’ll have to buy the com cord and headset. I get Apple’s reasoning; kind of... But it seems like a motorcycle specific option that doesn’t require a microphone would make a whole lot of people happy. Thanks always for the vids!

Hey Ryan great video. I took my 2019 Street Glide to my local dealer today to have this done. They installed/flashed my system (no charge) I turned my projection on as described in your video. I noticed that you said the update was MY 19.19.03.00 when I went into software on the bike it says M19.19.03.00 so it’s missing the “Y” so I didn’t know if this made a difference. Still no apple car play. No I do not have the whim nor the headset. Any help or ideas Thanks in advance. Keep up the awesome videos always enjoy your knowledge.

according to John Maxwell and his video you have to have the dealer turn of headset in the GTS....if you have an ultra or limited with headset 7 pin plug you can plug in wired headset and it should work....Just passing along what I have seen on other video bloogs!

I've owned a 2019 FLTRU since March and CarPlay worked with the plugin headset from the beginning, no WHIM or flash. Where do you get this stuff and how can you say it with such authorly.

Thanks Ryan!!! It worked!!!! I have the wired headset as well and CarPlay still works with and without the headset plugged in with the WHIM activated (tho I don’t have a WHIM installed). Would a Cardo unit work now?
As several of my recent videos go over..........trial and error. Some non Sena brand wireless Bluetooth headsets will pair with the WHIM. You just have to try. However, you WILL NOT GET STEREO SOUNDS unless you use a Harley stamped Sena wireless or HD wired headset.
Does anyone know if the flash still works?
