Beware of Harley WHIM Headset Module Firmware Update! Missing Boom Box Configuration Menu!

- Since updating my Harley-Davidson Wireless Headset Interface Module “WHIM” to the latest version 1.1.4 firmware I have been having problems. My Harley stamped Sena 30k mesh & 20s wireless Bluetooth headsets will pair & I can hear music, however, the status and configuration menu tab in the Harley Boom Box menu are missing along with other audio settings. Also, each time I go into the Boom Box wireless headset menu it shows it’s disabled and I have to enable it again. After much testing, I decided to revert to an older WHIM firmware update, version 1.0.2 and it immediately fixed the problem on two separate WHIM modules I was testing. Clearly, version 1.1.4 is corrupt and can break your WHIM. I really hope this helps many in the biker community diagnose and fix this issue.

I have a 2016 TGU. I bought into the Whim and HD20S headset when it first came out and installed it all myself. After taking it to the dealer for activation it has worked pretty well for me. It takes a little time to get all the headset settings like you want them. I installed the 1.1.4 update right after it became available for download. I guess I was one of the lucky ones. It works fine and I can control and make changes to the headset via the boom box programming. Did HD or you ever figure out why some work and some don't? No doubt HD really sucks with their ability to create good software and updates for the head units as well as the WHIM etc. Keep up the good work.

My bike is at the shop waiting to see if Harley will buy me a new WHIM. I'm going up there tomorrow to see if backing down the WHIM software version resolves this issue for me. Thanks for the file. Harley really needs to keep a repository of older software versions for customers to access.
Thank you Ryan. This saved me $300 and much more if you factor in the aggravation I've had. I would have updated the new WHIM as well as soon as I got it, if I had bought one. I just went to the shop where my bike is sitting for this issue, and used the file you made available to take the WHIM code back to v1.0.2. Everything started working as soon as I did that.

Thanks for the 1.0.2 firmware. I wanted to try that, but didn't have the older firmware. I went backwards in the firmware and got the configuration menu back. The only problem is non of the menu items work. This is becoming a very interesting problem.

After watching your videos, I wouldn't go near that WHIM. And I would (and probably will) go with the Sena Freewire.
Very good call. If I wasn't here to help bikers on this channel, I would have gotten rid of the WHIM long ago and just used the reliable Sena Freewire instead. Does the SENA freewire allow integration with a non-branded H-D Sena headset along with utilizing the Apple carplay? That would be an interesting review! Talk about the best of both worlds. Looking into this algorithm for my 2020 FLTRXS..
I may have a solution after attempting several downloads and updates to the whim and 30K headset. Harley's Boom Audio Bluetooth Device Manager firmware listed on their website is version 1.3. Once you start the Device Manager it mentions a firmware update is available listed as 1.4. I tried the Device Manager on 1.3 and continued to have the same problems with no configuration available. Using Whim 1.0.2 provided the configuration menu, but the configuration menu did not allow changes. After updating the Device Manager firmware to 1.4 and updating Whim firmware to 1.1.4 everything worked correctly. I hope this will work for other. There is also an update available for the 30k through Device Manager.
Harley builds some beautiful machines but they abuse their customers. If they are charging for a premium product you should get premium service

Ryan, My husband and I Have been running Whims on each of our bikes, Streetglide & Ultra with HD stamped Sena 20s. He purchased a Sena momentum helmet from Sena. We can blue tooth our devices but when he plugs in his phone and starts his bike the Whim losses connection to his Momentum and my HD stamped 20 s. We have done the all the firmware upgrades and have reverted back to the Whim 1.0.2 software. He still does not have the config screen on the Boom Radio. Are you saying the that HD Sena and the Sena Momentum helmet are not compatible with the Whim?
I'm frustrated with my HD 30k. I go into the config file and select one of the options deeper into the setup and my radio blanks out. Harley says they are aware of the problem but no updates since March of this year.
When was the firmware update done to your original WHIM module?
I just bought a new 19 RGU. Added the whim. The GTS does not recognize the whim (no option on the GTS screen to link and configure headsets) and I cannot get the HD software to recognize the whim from my laptop. Going into the dealer in a week or so for the 1000 mile service so all under warranty. Thanks Ryan, hopefully with the info you have provided here on your channel we can get this issue solved. Maybe I should just go back to the direct hard wire plug in connection. Definitely frustrating but have had ongoing SENA Bluetooth connectivity issues with my other bikes. Bluetooth in my SUV always works first time every time. Seems stupid...it's not like Bluetooth is cutting edge technology!

You did get the Boom GTS flashed to recognize the WHIM right? If not it will not know it is there.
@@crump133 At first my dealer was clearly not sure on how to fix the problem, just as Ryan indicated in his video. However they did fix the problem! They updated all software, flashed the system and made sure the rider and passenger helmets were connected and worked with all functions. Now the entire system is working perfectly (as it should have in the first place but that's another story). Very pleased with the audio quality. My service tech at Santa Fe HD called me regularly to keep me updated on what was happening. Excellent customer service. They indicated to me several of the whims they had installed lately had similar issues, but not all units. Hopefully my issues with the whim and the fix will help other customers here in this area.

I’m facing problem with my WHIM module at my RoadGlide Limited 2020.
The problem is, intercom and CB works fine for rider but for pessager doesn’t not allow to speak, means my wife only hear me but I can hear hear kkkk that’s not too bad.
So I already went to two dealers and both doesn’t found the problem. Please find bellow what I did already:
1) change the mic of passenger
2) change the full set of SENA 20S
3) try all kind of configuration possible
4) set the VOX at boom system
5) downgrade the firmware for 1.0.2 (1.1.14 was correct)
Nothing works so far. Can you help me with other possible things that can be done?

I am currently using the 1.1.4 firmware and I thought you needed it for the 30k headset. Is your 30k headset working ok on the 1.0.2 firmware?
Got new bike yesterday. 2019 RGS with WHIM that was updated yesterday. 30K headset updated.
Synced with headset okay. Radio works with headset.
Tried using the phone. Headset buttons don’t work, voice “Hello” doesn’t work, nothing works. System, through bike speaker, says intercom failed. Tried everything to get this to work as far as configuration settings. Expensive radio, expensive headset, expensive adapter to use it with headset and FAILURE! Unbelievable.
Hello Ryan I ride a 17 Streetglide with stock boom system. I just purchased a AGV sport Modular helmet. Needless to say my music is quite muffled at HWY speeds. However my GPS sounds fine.. funds are very low.. will just upgrading my speakers work for me?
The 30k headset has problems getting audio through the ear piece. Version 2.1 seems to work but the latest version 3.1 (headset) has problems. Got a visit from the factory guy. He took my headset and one out of dealer inventory back with him.
Harley radio suck! I have an Apple phone when I first got my bike it would not sync Bluetooth with the bike. Finally heard Harley came out with a new download for the radio it started working there and Apple came out with a new download or upgrade whatever quit working I haven’t had problems with this for quite a while now but every time there’s a new upgrade I hold my breath. I’m not a tech guy I’m just an old ironworker surely they could make this shit simple for old biker . You’re on top of the stuff I am not and I will never be why do they have to make things so difficult for the Lehman. Not everybody is a tech guy. Then I got to go try to find somebody to help me which is a pain in the ass. And you’re right the dealerships don’t know. Are used to have a Garman it notified me when there was a map upgrade I plug the unit in and it said push the button and it was done. I walked away till it was finished and I’m a happy camper. Harley you got to have this you got to have that you got to do this you got to do that. I have a $40,000 motorcycle CVO I can’t used half the shit on it. For my maps are usually just go to my phone that’s mounted on the handlebars and use Google, far superior to the Harley .
I have 2018 Ultra. It has a CB plug but no module. Do I need the extra cable? I installed the whim and had the dealer flash the radio but it doesnt recognize the WHIM
Amazing Ryan that you had the know how to find this problem and fix! Hopefully you are able to return the new WIM. So the bikes don't already come from the factory with a WIM, right? You have to add it once you purchase a wireless device? TY for all you do for the biker community brah!
Correct, the new bikes do not come with a whim except for the CVO models. Everyone else has to buy it and add it on

Is there an outside temperature reading on the 2019 GTS infotainment screen... By 2017 boom Box had that period could see with the outside temperature is.
Yes, you can find it on the Info screen. Touch the "I" on the boom GTS unit (upper Right corner) and it is real small at the bottom left corner of the first screen. It took me about a week to find it. You can actually hold in the home joystick in for like 5 or 6 seconds (the joystick on the left switch pack) and it will give you a way to navigate to the info screen without having to touch the screen to hit the "I" on the touch screen.
I have a 19 Street Glide that my dealer added the WHIM to. I’m having a different problem but may be related. Whenever I turn off the motorcycle I loose all volume settings for the passenger headset. When I go into 5he volume settings it shows they are all at the level I previously set. However, when I go to raise the volume the slider starts at zero. Once I have them reset they stay till the motorcycle is powered off again. Real pain in the butt as we ride two up most of the time.
I’m going to try the firmware rollback as soon as I get the chance.

I have a 2019 RGS. Does the same thing to me. If you ride two up most of the time, you should automatically remember to turn up the volumes. It sucks, but overall, I like the system.
This is why I have the sena Bluetooth to my phone. And I ride the sport glide.
Is it possible that the SPH10 and Expand headsets do not offer a config option via the boom box? The last two updates are displaying the same issue you have seen however everything works fine. Your thoughts Ryan?
The only headsets that will get config options are the HD stamped Sena 20S and 30K Mesh
Ryan. Wondering if you have tried a non-H-D headset with the whim. I bought a Neotec II last September with the SRL. the whim recognized it but it’s never had a config menu. I’ve just been using the Sena app to change the settings. Had v1.0.2 at the time. I upgraded to v1.1.4 no problems but no config menu still. Is this normal for non-H-D headsets? Just curious.
Check out my previous video on this matter and you'll get a bunch of info. You'll need a Harley stamped Sena headset to pair with the WHIM if you want the configurations. There are other volume controls you'll be missing too without a HD stamped headset. The battery status of your headset won't show either.
I have one for you, I have the HD 20S EVO running V2.1, and my Whim is running v1.1.14. When the 20S connects to the Boom Box the volume control doesn't work on the radio any more. When using the hand controls normally you see the bars moving on the screen when you toggle up or down on the volume, it doesn't even show the bars any more. As soon as I disconnect the 20S it works fine again. My local dealership let me try another 20S headset and it was the same so it has to be an issue with the WHIM. It was running 1.1.4 before I upgraded it to 1.1.14 and I am pretty sure that's when this started I called HD and they had me re-download and re-flash the headset and the whim but it didn't help so they want me to take it to dealer. Mine should still be under warranty I have only had the bike 3 months.

@@RyanUrlacherI figured it out its not the whim, its the iPhone 11, there is a problem with it I tested an iPhone 10X which is what I had before and it works great. The music works fine, you can pretty much do anything but make phone calls when connected via blue tooth or USB/Apple Car Play. Harley says its an Apple issue which I tend to agree but when I spoke to Apple I got the feeling they think Harley should fix it. This is going to be interesting.
Hey i Have a sena 50r and when I connect it to the whim the mesh shuts off? Is there workaround this problem?
Ryan can not thank you enough for the link to 1.0.2. At first I did not think the new update was causing any problems. WRONG I could not switch from bike speakers to headset, with out powering down headset on and off. Several other glitches started showing up. This brings me to my question, when I went to download 1.0.2 it said the newest was 1.1.14 ? Is that the same as 1.1.4 ?

Michael Mazzitelli , there is known bug in the update. When trying to name and save a destination as a “saved location”, the boombox gives an error message. I called Harley C/S today and they are aware of the issue, but no time frame for a fix/update. How sad for users and my 2018 Ultra-Limited is under warranty.... and still no help.
2023 any suggestions on the current WHIM?
So the only reason I would need a WHIM for my 2019 ultra limited is to get the stereo sound I could still use it for GPS and phone without it is that correct?
Correct. The WHIM Is strictly for if you want to pair a wireless Bluetooth headset with the boom box

Hello Ryan. I did install the whim and the 20S Evo, and Harley updated the firmware prior to installing. I’m getting very low volume on my phone calls while I’m ridding additionally more often I’m getting cracking sounds on phone calls as well..however the other person here’s me just fine.. any help would be greatly appreciated..Steve

well I wish I would have seen this 2 weeks ago. I have not seen any ill affects yet, should I dump 1.1.4 anyway. Are some people not having problems with the update? I have had the WHIM since day one (you warned us) should have spent the money on BEER

Hi Ryan, what’s the latest update for the Harley NO1 helmet firmware? I tried to install the “Boom Audio NO1 Helmet” version 2 download it and it keeps failing...

I wonder if the problem is with the base manufacturer of either the modules, or the boards being used in the modules. I'm willing to bet Harley isn't making these things, they've contracted out to most likely several manufacturers who've been using whatever circuit boards they can source through their suppliers. It's very likely some of those parts don't meet spec or some of those suppliers aren't properly testing those parts, or the folks writing the updates don't have all the specs for every part being used. This kind of "supply chain manufacturing" can and has caused lots of problems for end line retailers. Ask anyone who's thrown together more than a couple PC's and they will definitely have their favorite parts vendors and manufacturers for this very kind of reason. In order to fix this, Harley should immediately recall ALL of the modules and pay for a replacement of the module, after they locate the root cause of the problem that is....

isn't true you can get the Sena Freewire, plug in to 7 pin and use with any Sena for hands free operation. if cheaper than wHIM

I am a retired law enforcement officer...38 years. I really enjoy the information from the videos and have made some purchases from the Law Abiding Biker store. I see the frustration you are experiencing and I considered purchasing a WHIM but the cost just makes it impractical...especially with the issues the WHIM has and the fact you HAVE to use the Harley SENA devices. I looked at the reviews of the WHIM on the Harley On-Line store and there are more people that say it is junk then there are that say it works well. It does not have a good rating. I guess I will just stay connected with my cable. And now...as of 2019 you can't even buy aftermarket wired headsets. And Harley wonders why it is loosing customers...

I have a theory. if your system is working then don't fix it! I have had countless issues with updates so I quit installing them unless there are no other options.
Can be true. But, updates also fix many bugs and issues when done right.

Yes, bad testing for sure but Harley is hardly the first company to be found guilty of such a thing.
Apple releases updates ALL THE TIME that are loaded with issues for example.
I hope someone fron.HD is watching this, they should be held accountable, you went & bought the first unit in good faith, 5hen due to its malfunction & being our of warranty, you went & bought another, which when updated proved to do the same, this sucks. We all like HD as a machine but to do this to valued customers is not acceptable, & Ryan being a LEO is not or one to lying, c'mon HD give the man at a least a commensurate voucher, don't be arseholes 👍👍😎

I've unpaired my phone to the radio. I'm going to run everything through my non Harley Sena. I can navigate without hearing my GPS on my bike. Save yourselves some $$$$$.
