What’s the movie The Break-Up about?
Pushed to the brink after yet another "Why can't you do this one little thing for me?" domestic dispute, art dealer Brooke Meyer (Jennifer Aniston from Friends and Just Go With It) decides to break up with her fiancé Gary Grobowski (Vince Vaughn from Rudy and Couples Retreat), a tour guide in Chicago. Yet neither of them is willing to move out of the apartment they share, and the only solution is to continue living under the same roof as enemy co-tenants until one of them gives in. What follows is a series of tactics, sometimes suggested by old friends of the couple, sometimes by confidants and sometimes even by total strangers, designed to undermine the opponent. But somewhere between the pool table in the living room, the dirty laundry piled up in the kitchen closet, and the games being watched at full volume in the middle of the night, Brooke gradually realizes that what she's fighting for isn't so much the apartment as it is Gary. In an unexpected twist, Gary changes, but isn't it already too late?

It's not about the lemons. The lemons where a tipping point of a deeper issue, that he felt the things she cared about where unimportant. In a relationship there has to be a level of mutual care and respect for each other's wants and needs no matter how trivial.
I kind of get it though. When I come home from work I don`t want to see people or have giant family gatherings. I just want to lay on my bed and numb my brain. I`m too tired.
This is not even about appreciation. They were supposed to host a family dinner TOGETHER. But then he comes home last minute and sits down to watch a game. She should have stopped doing anything and sit down, too.
“Baby wanted twelve” 😅😅
The fact that he didn’t even answer her question of why he didn’t get the 12 lemons. He just asked her unnecessary and irrelevant questions.
oh, god. movies like this remind me of how lucky I am to be with a good man. neither of us are perfect, but we both work and help each other out at home without asking or counting. honestly, it's even simpler than all this arguing.
Wow a man child ....
He takes her for granted
Geez, they rang the doorbell three times in ten seconds. That’s some impatient family.
I thought it was a nice touch. Implied a certain level of excitement and expectation. Like the dinner was something her parents were really looking forward too, while at the same time suggesting they might nitpick too, which would kind of explain Rachel trying to go overboard with something like a homemade 12 lemon centerpiece.
Instead of all that excuse and being distracted, he could have took his eyes off the TV, stood up, give her a hug and told her "I know this is important to you. I'm really sorry I forgot the lemons. Please??" Something like that. But no. He had to waste all time arguing why does she need 12 lemons. 🤦🏽♀️🙄
That guy was simply disgusting 🤮

I have been in relationships where I have taken my partner, yes, partner, for granted.... I ended up like Gary many times, but eventually, I learned. This movie is quite funny, but it is also very sad. It is sad because of all that is avoidable, but pride simply will not let it happen. Great film.
Were you born Gay or TV and education made you gay?
I'm glad you realized this for yourself! Hope also that you made changes...My partner realized his ego was huge as heck, but didn't really change anything about how he approached relationships (granted, this isn't an easy step) --- Hope you took the next step! He simply sent me a song called "Lost and Found" by Randy Rogers Band -- great song...but one that states clearly...he can't let go of his pride...Realized how he fell short...but refused to do anything about it. More men should read Pride and Prejudice at this point....some great lessons there for all involved.
@@OlgaBylova I like to think that have grown significantly, thank you for asking. I also like to think that I have reached most of my growth; but still growing on occasion. It has been quite a journey....Learning to value others is probably one of the most difficult things that any person can try and do. This why most people chose not to; it's just easier not trying.
The human psyche simply does not give much room for us to think and value anything outside of ourselves. Even the so-called "givers" don't realize that their gifts of giving, in some way, is also serving a self-gratifying purpose.
The problem for me is that in my journey, I learned to understand that this trait was not exclusive to me, or men, which made, and continues to make, dating difficult. Both men and women have the capacity for greed and self-preservation; just like in this film.
It's a hard balance, trying to be mentally sober, while trying not to judge some in front of you who might not be. Ultimately, I've learned that being alone doesn't make me lonely, but being with the wrong person does.
I think the general problem isn't just Gary though. Just because Gary wanted to relax when he got home from work, doesn't mean he's in the wrong here. Yes, Gary could've gone out to the local store and grabbed 9 more lemons, but Brooke could have understood that Gary is a different person and wants some time to relax. Brooke seems to expect Gary to live up to her expectations, while Gary seems to prolong arguments instead of taking action.
@@jdbruiser Sorry, no disrespect, but I think that entire comment was spoken like a true dominator! All of that, which you just said is simply straight domination. Why? Because in that whole comment, it seems as if Brooke is the one with the problem...She needs to understand, she needs to adjust, she needs to realize that he's different. And, Gary, his only crime is that he prolonged and didn't act fast enough??? What does that even mean? Fast enough to what, punch her in the face, walk away from her, stick his palm in her face and tell her "talk to the hand, bitch"??? Let's see how far that thinking will get you in real life. It's ironic, even with a road map in front of them, a road map like this film, people still don't seem to get it! Sometimes, like Gary, people have to learn the hard way.
I'm glad she didn't end up with him, he was a dusty😬

How she ever got mixed up with the likes of Gary whom I would describe as a oaf…

The one when Rachael making lemon centerpiece
he showed up with 3 lemons LMAO
Michaelangelo didn't ask for 3 brushes
He was a prick. I'm so happy she left him. She deserves way better. He's abusive and lazy.
If your woman wanted 12 lemons, give her those lemons and be happy
Be alone. Less complicated and peaceful
Ain't that the truth!
He is the classic men that thinks because of he works and takes care of the majority of the bills he has done everything and doesn't have to show any appreciation what so ever, deserves everything, and can't be bother with small things.
Meanwhile she worked too but even if she didn’t he should still help out a bit
"majority of the bills" - the key here
He didn't take care of the majority of the bills , she had her own career
@@deerheart87 Now you are adding your own "facts"
Lol literally nowhere in the movie does it say he pays for the majority
Why on earth would he go through the effort of going to the store, parking, going to the lemons and only picking up three, checking out and driving home? Then act all upset that she asked for twelve but only got three? If you can't understand a simple request wtf?
Ok but why couldn't she be specific?
@@shanfarco1574Uhh she was? She asked for 12. He brought back 3. Should she have given him weight, shade of yellow, andvolume as well? 12 seems pretty specific to me.

To the comment below, it is not as simple as him being disgusting! This is about how men and women see things so differently. The film did a great job of highlighting that.
Terrible bf
If you want Fanny dinner parties don’t date and live with a beer and pizza guy. His friend will say it later in the movie” she should have known better. Your the guy who does what you want and does not give a sh** about anyone else. As long as we do what you want it fine but you NEVER do anything anyone else likes. We all know, that’s just who you are.”
I'm all for cleaning, helping around the house plus I love cooking but a 12 lemon centerpiece....come on!!! 😡
That is so not cool

One of the many man-boys in media- they want to spend the majority of their time “hanging with their bros” (ugh), playing video games, indulging in their sports and hobbies, but b/c they work it’s supposed to be all good even though they’re completely selfish. Why America? Why? 😩
I bet you're single. You like traveling huh?

She wich so hire a maid
Absolutely everyone in this scene could use a slap.
If you're rich enough hire a maid I guess.
He is building a business. He wants 20 minutes to himself. She was the one who wanted to set up a stupid decoration that most people wont even notice. She nagged and complained and wouldnt let her man breathe. I do all kinds of stupid crap for my wife and the second i get to do something for myself, she will hold it against me for years. I can sweep the upstairs and my wife will just complain that o didnt sweep the stairs and downstairs. I clean the stove but she noticed i didnt touch the microwave. Women need to learn acceptance and the danger in expectations. Its great that they can turn a sperm into a child. Wow. That doesnt mean they should be let off the hook for all the other stuff.
Just like women
not all women
Women
i wonder what you meant by that? do you even know? lol aw
I can understand both sides of the argument. Gary should have bought her 12 lemons instead of 3 which was very inconsiderate of him. However, every man including Gary deserves to unwind after a long day of work and it doesn't help when the women they're with constantly nag them. So overall, Gary's lack of involvement in the relationship as well as Brooke's perfectionist and controlling behavior is what caused them to split. Both parties are at fault.
'every man deserves to unwind', so does every woman. She was doing all the cooking/cleaning for HIM and he can't even do 1 simple thing?
@@loveandlucky3 True. Good point.
Brooke goes to work too. After work, she cooks, cleans the house while he watches TV and does nothing to help her!
God she is selfish. Women are incapable of seeing when they're wrong.
Men are incapable of seeing when they're wrong.
You don't like it when it's about your gender, right? It's not all women and it's not all men. It doesn't come with the gender. It comes with the stupidity human begins have.
In this scene she did said she worked all day, clean everything, cook everything and all he had to do is buy 12 lemons. Yes, that thing she wants to do with the lemons is dumb for me too. However, she likes it. She doesn't even get mad about the lemons but the lack of respect his boyfriend have with her. He can't take a moment to help her on anything. After the dinner, he sits on the couch and start playing video games while she's cleaning...
@@ngrp27 Nope. It's all women's fault.
She didn’t even do anything wrong 😂 she asked for a tiny bit of help and he just acted like a complete asshole the entire time but go off 😂
@Sally Smith 🤨 exactly! She literally did everything; cleaning, cooking and she asked for one thing. The least he could have done was get what she asked
@@LilyZerep Like I said, woman are incapable of seeing when they're wrong.
I don't think Gary did anything wrong. He forgot some lemons big deal. She established her role in the relationship as the coordinator of friend and family events, which gives her an established sense of control and purpose which he acknowledges and lets her do her thing. She's organized and him not so much. She's making a big deal out of really nothing. The dinner apparently went off without a hitch and nobody even noticed the standard missing 12 lemon center piece that's apparently typical at dinner events. And if Gary designed video games and was making millions on it I'm sure her opinion on video games would immediately changed to a positive one. Great movie. Best scene is the Madden scene when shes trying to make him jealous and he befriends the date in a classic Madden match up.
