- Small town blues and Hawaiian music meet in this fingerstyle cover of Goodtime Charlie’s … |
"Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues" is a song written by Danny O'Keefe and recorded by several artists, most notably Danny O'Keefe himself, and also by Elvis Presley. The song was released in 1972. Despite the sadness it conveys, it's a timeless classic that has captivated the hearts of many listeners. The lyrics of the song tell the story of a man who is feeling a sense of loss and isolation as those around him leave for the bright lights of Los Angeles. He speaks of the disappointment of feeling that his current town is wasting his time, and reflects on the weight of his age and the potential consequences of living a carefree lifestyle. But, in the midst of this, he searches for something to ease the pain and longing in his heart. The song is a melancholic anthem for anyone who has ever felt left behind, and captures the universal human experience of longing for something more.
I begin my rendition of "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues" with a classic Hawaiian slack-key lick, setting the stage for the journey ahead. The first two verses and chorus are played with a delicate touch, the backbeat punctuated by a soft strum, creating a sense of gentle movement. In the third verse, I incorporate the use of open strings and play an open string lick to further enhance the Hawaiian feel. The IV chord is played up the neck, utilizing the open strings to full effect. A natural harmonic note on the V chord sets the stage for a descending lick using 6ths intervals. The accompaniment becomes sparse during the last verse, as if the band is hushing to allow the singer's voice to shine. The melody is played using artificial harmonics at the end of the verse. The last melody line of the second chorus uses open strings again, closing the song in the same way it began, with a slack-key flourish.
Willie Nelson has recorded a beautiful version of this song, with Reggie Young on guitar • Good Time Charlie's Go...
