  • Who was his biggest rival in Formula One? Who was scarier: Ron Dennis or Frank Williams? And what’s the story behind his lucky underpants?
These were just some of the questions you sent us to ask former Grand Prix ace and Cooper Tire ambassador David Coulthard, when we jetted out to the Geneva Motor Show to meet him last week.
He also reveals who he rates higher, Ayrton Senna or Michael Schumacher, whether he ever nailed a perfect lap, and what his daily driver is - and the answer to that might surprise you…
Big thanks to Cooper Tires for sponsoring the video and giving us the chance to put your questions to F1 legend DC!

It was only a great car because Benetton illegally was using the traction control which wasnt in the FIA regulations after Williams won both 92 and 93 Drivers World Championship( Mansell and Prost ) using traction control...ironically enough once Senna joined Williams in 94. They werent allowed to using the same technology for the traction control... Why because they didn't Want Senna to Win anymore World Championships because since the French have the biggest influence in politics with the FIA ..they didnt want to see a BRAZILIAN win 5 , 6 , 7 DRIVERS World Championships ...No not a South American since it's a European based Sport..if u really think Senna wasnt Murdered..think again because The French and the British had to huge part in this scandal. You're criticizing my comment because DC's example was his contemporary and not some season way before he was born?
Keke IS a former world champion. No one thinks of him as being in the same class as champions who've been dominant. There are world champions and there are *World Champions*. That is an accurate observation.
Just because you bring up a far older, and perhaps more relevant, example, that most never knew, or forgot if they did, does not detract from DC's observation. It's ok if you don't think it's accurate. Seems there's _something_ unusual about most every season.

Schumacher was the biggest opportunist in F1 history. He stood out for a number of motives that converged terrifyingly in his favor (for example: the absence of highly talented and competitive rivals, a more than suspected partnership with the super cheater and banished Briatore, a demand from weak and uninterested comrades who could never defy his position as first driver on the team, powerful sponsors determining his commands and desires - especially at Ferrari). He had speed and talent, yes. However, it would be just another Alesi of life (promise that never avenged) if it disputed in the Golden Age. Even though it was a dissenting comparison, totally unfair and absurd with Senna - the greatest of all (who won everything and broke records wherever he went, except for the kart world in which he became vice, acting for a short time, impressing the specialized media of the time ), the German was a medium-sized and unimpressive pilot in the base and pre-F1 categories, losing to Frentzen and others who never thrived, being treated as a robot by the German press itself, rated as a "clumsy pilot" (Wikipedia). It was never unanimity in their own nation. A rider who lost to Hill, Hakkinen, Villeneuve, Montoya, Alonso, Rosberg, and was the most punished driver in F1 history for competing several times dishonestly and dirty throughout his career (source: FIA), free of talent and speed, NEVER CAN BE COMPILED WITH AYRTON SENNA. I feel for the generation nutella and pokémon that only saw the German run, and lost of seeing the greatest of all and what more thrilled in the tracks. To paraphrase Jeremy Clarkson, host of Top Gear, "Senna was spectacular every time he got into a racing car." By virtue of the truths exposed, we already have an idea of the greatness of Senna and his deeds. Trying to demoralize his memory and his unforgettable races, or offending anyone who knows the reality of the facts, is the typical imbecile comment of a poor fellow in spirit, who lives in a backward bubble and simply has no plausible arguments to refute anyone who disagrees with his limited thinking. Another thing: we all know that an adverse condition like wet track, levels the quality of the riders and decreases the difference between the cars. So Donington 93 sent a souvenir (nobody else will do anything like that, with Prost and Schumacher's carat rivals riding fast cars looking like little children)... Accept those truths that hurt the least.

THE FERA,you cite weak rivals, higher numbers of races, numbers of races is not the main question for the pilot to have the highest numbers of poles or victories, we must also analyze each season the car, the difference of the best team to other adversaries if it is too big if rivals are too fast or not, whether the one tire has more grip or not at every track disputed, Schumacher only had the best F1 car in 2001,2002 and 2004 but Ferrari did not have much difference in relationship with the Mclarens and the Williaws as had Senna's and Prost's Mclarens in 1988 and 1989 in relation to the other teams, Vettel and Webber RBRs and current Mercedes, you may notice that only those who had the best car fired in relation the other teams in the last 30 years managed to beat 13, 14 poles in a single season in 1988, in 1989 and 1990 Senna had the best car with the best tires and hit 36 poles having as a single opponent the Prost that as quoted above it was the a driver who rode more often in high-end cars in the history of F1 and only had a good performance of poles just in the year that ran for the powerful Williams of 1993 from another planet where he hit 13 poles more than half of what he did from 1980 to 1991 where he he hit 20 mists, he was a very intelligent, strategic driver who thought a lot and great technique but he was never a bad rider in the rain, Prost only hit 4 poles in 1988 and 1989, and no pole for Ferrari in 1990, I ask you a question Prost was able to dispute poles with the German? If even with inferior drivers he could get good numbers of poles before 1988 he could never hit a good number of poles nor when he was champion in 1985 and 1986 he got good numbers of poles, Mansell for the love of God calls that fool of adversary as the Sennistas call it a joke, it took him five and a half years to win a race, he took the teammates' handicap in more than 80% of the seasons, he was behind Elio Deangilis in 4 seasons for Lotus and 1985 even in Williams being car top lotus took Elio's cock again he also took Keke Rosberg's stick from his 1985 mate in 1984 to remember while Elio was third in the world he with the same the car finished tenth in 1987 even though Piquet being a great driver more was debilitated with the accident of the training of Imola in the famous curve Tamburello and he lost the title anyway, took stick of Prost in Ferrari, these 2 Mansell and Prost were the only one between 1988 and 1991, since Piquet from 1988 to 1991 did not have a car to disturb Senna, Schumacher stayed between 1991 and 2000 facing superior machines of his had to take the disadvantage of the equipment in the track had no way to hit 13 poles with equipment lower in 1993 even with Mclaren having their best car ever and who says that are the Mclaren bosses themselves on their team sites, MP4 / 8 is the McLaren model of the 1993 F1 season. He was guided by Michael Andretti, Mika Häkkinen and Ayrton Senna. It was the most advanced McLaren of all time because it had traction control, start control, fly by wire accelerator, active suspension, ABS brakes and various electronic devices. Even so with superior equipment in the personal fight with the German each one dropped 8 times in front of the other and Senna did not manage this stupid advantage that had in the training with Prost in the times of the Mclaren where the two were pilots and neither minima advantage he also got over the German, the only Ferrari managed in the sixth season to give the best car for Schumacher that was why Senna did not go to Ferrari because he said that the team would take at least four seasons to give a car competitive for him, do you think Senna would beat between 1996 and 2000 13 poles in a single season? Schumy's first rival in 1992 and 93 and 94 was the senna he was weak?

The fera, you mention Rubinho, because Rubinho himself in an interview in March 2015 in the program of Jô Soares said that Ferrari only asked him to give the position to the German twice, one in 2001 he was in second and the German in third and they reversed the position and added 2 points to Schumacher in the world only that the German finished the world-wide with 123 points and the second one had 65 the David Coulthard or the 2 points was very little in front of the great difference on the vice of the year , the other time was on the famous day today not today yes where he gave up the first place and reversed the positions in the Austrian GP but as Schumacher also yielded a victory for him Rubinho and returned the 4 points that he was given and that world Schumacher was champion in July and won the championship shot if there was not the team game he would be penta anyway, but because of that team game the FIA from 2003 banned the team game and even so he won or more 2 times out of the 2000 he won without a team match and still the 2 of BENNETON.Now what I think is funny is that you forget and I will remind you and ask you to re-watch the GP of South Africa of 1993 where Galvão in full transmission of the race cited a Senna agreement with his ex: rival in his time of Lotus Michele Alboreto that in 1993 was not his teammate but turned his great friend where he cites that the Alboreto asked the Senna how long he Alboreto wants him to delay Prost during the race when he has Alboreto ahead as a latecomer and Senna accepted the help and asked for 3 to 4 seconds or more, well the Schumacher was the first victim of this agreement of companions of different team in the next GP in the GP of Brazil of 93, the German had been in the beginning of the GP of Brazil surpassed by Alesi and after the Prost Senna and HILL fired fights by position then the German got rid of Alesi and it flew low and arrived easy at fight of the two there Hill gets rid of Senna and the Brazilian begins to take a real pressure from the Schumy and in the middle of the way the Alboreto sucks the Senna facilitates the passage of him so he does not get overtaken and began to play dirty so the German does not pass and for Senna to open, what an ugly thing Senna did in, the Rubinho was at least the same team as the German and Alboreto, I'll also remind you that Senna also played team with Berg on the day of the tri in Japan in 1991 as the madman of Mansell facilitated Senna's life and left the idiotic pilot lane Senna had to in the end return the position that Berg had ceded despite the pulling bag of Galvão wanted to put in the head of the Brazilian people Senna that wanted to give the victory pro Berg a washed-up lie was order of the team and Senna was annoyed to receive the order wanted to be champion winning.

Quickest driver of all time. Senna. Best driver of all time. Schumacher. Depending on what kind of parameters you use, you can either go Senna or Schumacher as the greatest. One thing I still value a lot is Schumacher´s choice to make a bad team great again. Senna wanted the best car. He never wanted to make a team better or build a legacy. His legacy is 90% his death.

bowlchamps37 agree in parts. The first part of the statement are facts because that’s how history unfolded and no one can debate with that.
Senna didn’t live as much só everything else is assuming.
Senna was faster driver and understood a lot more about cars. Even barrichello used to help Schumacher finding balance and tuning his car. Do your research on that. So to me if you know more and are faster that speaks volumes. Anyways they both are great legends from different times. That’s my opinion and I respect yours too. Aho !

I include Franchitti and McRae (both) in this group as well. Three people who worked with both Ayrton and Michael:
Pat Symonds on Senna, Schumacher, Alonso
“Fernando was incredibly competitive, had the same total self-esteem of Ayrton and Michael. They know they are the best. He was a great racer, not quite as outright quick as Michael, maybe, but still very, very quick. At the times I worked with them I’d say Michael was the quickest, then Fernando, then Ayrton."

Joan Villadelprat on Senna and Schumacher:
"Senna was in the best team, which was at that time, with 100 more horses than us who had the Ford-Cosworth engine, and we ate it ... until the accident came, but we were ahead in the championship. And it was not just because of Schumacher. It was one of these sweet moments, Benetton was in shape. In tire changes and pit-stops we were the fastest. In fact, we won several races for this. There was a change of regulation where we prepared ourselves better. It would have been nice to see the fight between Senna and Michael, but I am convinced that Michael would have won. Because seeing Senna, so many years and knowing him, knowing what it cost him, how he got out of the car, etc. and see Michael after races at 50 degrees, win them and get out of the car as if he had had a coffee ... The physical form that Michael had at that time and his mental strength, however natural Ayrton had, by a lot of skill, I would have overcome. For Ayrton it was a much greater effort than for Michael. "

Correct Title should be "David Coulthard reveals his opinion on who he thinks was better...." Anyway, I disagree, for me it was definitely Schumacher and the reason I say this is because when Schumacher was racing against Senna he had 8 years less F1 experience and was a relative rookie compared to Senna and yet at the same time he was not only putting great pressure on Senna and giving him a tremendous challenge, but he was beating him in some races aswell. From what I have seen of the two racing together Schumacher was mostly the aggressor and the more dominant of the two.He seemed to have the edge and the upper hand over Senna and this was in his rookie years with tons less experience. Don't get me wrong, Senna was no doubt a truly brilliant racing driver and he was in a class of his own, but Schumacher was just on another level. A great pity we didn't get to see both of them racing together for a lot longer as they were very closely matched at the time. Although with Schumacher having that edge and with far less experience this proves to me he was the better of the two. Senna was peaking at the time in his F1 career, Schumacher could only get better, which he did and the statistics speak for themselves!

Senna also had more engineers to work on his cars because of his special relationship with Honda etc. Those are little things that can make big differences.

David, I was very dissapointed when you and Mika had such an advantage with the steering brake I came up with for McClaren. I told Steve Nichols to have you guys pedal the cars and just be fast enough, but under no circumstances blow away the othe cars. So I was shocked that you were beating the other teams time by 1.5 seconds a lap when you didn't need to. The steering brakes should have been legal for the whole season but Paddy Lowe didn't lay down the law and they were outlawed after only 3 races. Needless to say Steve Nichols and I had words over that! I've always admired you as a driver and thought you had a great future when you retired. Life is funny! Johnn435

2:55 - I must disagree with DC with regards to Keke Rosberg's World Championship winning year in 1982.
In the years since the early 1990s , there have been several seasons in-which the likes of Lewis Hamilton (2018) and Michael Schumacher (2002 and 2004) have won more than half the races in an individual season.
With the greatest respect to Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher, both had big car / technical advantages over their rivals. I have no doubt that both Hamilton and Schumacher would have been multiple World Champions in any era of F1 history.
But I don't think that neither Lewis Hamilton nor Michael Schumacher were THAT much better drivers than their rivals that these results seem to show.
But if you take 2019 as an example, there are only three teams with any chance at all of winning a race in the season.
The technical advantages that Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull have over the rest are such that the remaining teams with have "Hallelujah Days" if they get one of their guys on the podium.
If one team has the type of technical advantage that Hamilton had in 2018 and Schumacher in 2002 & 2004, then the rest of the drivers have one hand tied behind their backs.
Back in 1982, there was close to technical parity between a sizeable number of the teams Admittedly reliability , or to be honest , unreliability played a part in all of this.
But such was the equality technically in 1982 that nine (yes NINE !!) different drivers in seven different makes of car won a race in 1982.
If you were to translate this to 2019, it would mean that Renault , Haas, Racing Point and Mclaren would all win a race this year as well as the top three. From an entertainment point of view this would be great !!
With so many drivers having a potential winning car, it means that the driver won wins the championship in such a season has to really produce a series of great driving performances. Driver skill would really come-to-the-fore
In this way, it means that Keke Rosberg's 1982 World Championship is very special.

Yeah not really fair to call Rosberg undeserving. He could beat any driver on the grid when he was on. Reliability was a huge factor back in those days. On average you would be lucky to finish 2/3rds of the races for the year, which they had less of compared to now. So with the field being so equal then having certain races where other teams were better and then your car being good when it had a failure. Very easy to take few good results. I've watched full seasons of the 80s and he was a real force in F1. But for poor reliability he could have been a multiple world champ. He beat all his team-mates (other than Prost in his final year when he wasnt really even trying anymore and was getting fat lol) His absolute pace was always equal to anyone else
