Considering how important the subject matter is here, this 'documentary' wastes a lot of time dealing with the unimportant issues of the Vice guys. Rather than providing a decent amount of facts it could basically be summarised: - Being on a boat is VERY tough for young privileged Californians. 1. There's NO land. 2. You have to do BORING SHIT like read books and work out. 3. You can't even have a wank!! - But sometimes the sea has pretty sunsets and dolphins - The Garage Island isn't a garbage island (spoiler) - There's lots of plastic in small bits and we can't do anything about it - The guy gets the girl (lyk if you cri evry tiem) - OMG being back on land is like being stoned (Vice presenters are cool like me and do drugz) Vice should try hiring people who actually care more about the issues they're reporting about than their own 1st world problems. In a documentary of over an hour (definitely could have been shorter) I know next to nothing about when and how this plastic problem built up or how it could be tackled in the future and how an ordinary person might be able to help change the situation. But thankfully this is clearly explained by Vice in the description: 'we're fucked'.
Jvenvell that's what makes it more appealing! Vice wants the most amount of people watching this so this is what they need to do. No kid would watch a boring documentary dude. At least they are making something and they are making it visible for the society, whether it's with shitty content mixed or not. I wouldn't like it with out the making out section just saying. It's a matter of making it appealing to the viewer and the idea is there. Good job!
Jvenvell I agree with both Jvenell and HornyDolphin. All that interpersonal stuff did bore me, but that's what will hold the larger audience's attention, and this issue needs to reach as many as possible on a personal level.
+Jvenvell Oil is the problem, sad thing is, society thinks you're a hippie if you support alternative bio fuel sources, instead of oil companies hogging billions in profit. That could be used start massive jobs.
You could tell they are so disappointed because the great pacific garbage patch is displayed like a floating island of trash but what you really find is just a shit ton of small pieces of plastic.
I watch a lot of sailing videos and on a few occasions a crew or couple will run into an area that appears as though you could get out of the sailboat and walk on the trash. But most of the videos show the beautiful emerald waters along the Islands and reefs. I used to work on a Charter Fishing boat on the weekends as I love being way out in the Atlantic Ocean and I've never seen any trash. I will say that the Captain I worked with, new plenty of fishing hot spots, and the customers caught more fish than they needed . In the end they had to put a moratorium on Red Snapper as the species was almost fished out.
Why the fuck did this have to be about their entire trip out there? The fights? The cabin fever? That MTV Real World kiss? This should have been a 15 minute documentary at most. There was some really interesting information in there, but all of the unnecessary drama from the documentarians that all fancy themselves protagonists made it really hard to get through.
Getting the impression your pieces are more an exploration of your own insignificant emotions and journeys to experience issues rather than a thorough dissection of the issues themselves. I am really drawn to your topics but they are executed so poorly that I'm always left disappointed.
This video just opened my eyes even more. I try to recycle every object I would've put in the trash but now I realize I should even step up more to use less plastic everyday in the first place.
The reason there was so much 'boring' footage before they showed the actual garbage gyre is to give you a sense as to just how far they had traveled to get there. It saddens me that so many people can view this and coming away with only the emotion of boredom. Here's to instant gratification and an eternal plastic legacy.
Got to agree, I also feel the extra footage helped to entertain the younger crowds as oppose to just showing the horrifying/possibly boring environmental mess we have created.
I don't agree. They probably lost all but the most passionately interested viewers. And their personal stuff is of no interest to me, it wasn't the purpose of the documentary. I'm middle aged and have watched very long videos and films in my life. But this extra stuff should have been edited. Is it relevant? No? Cut it!
kristi shapla sorry that we didn’t feel like looking at water the entire video when all they were doing is talking about how bored they were 🤷🏽♀️ they had a great opportunity to touch on more of the effects and ANY of the solutions (which there’s tons of ways to reduce our plastic output) and they didn’t take it. Huge thumbs down.
I appreciate knowing how many conversations have sparked from this documentary. Thank you all so very much ~ it's up to each one of us now to make real changes in our own lives ~ BANNING PLASTICS and re-sharing so more people can do their part as well.
The irony is we dump this shit in the ocean because we want rid of it and can't be arsed to dispose of it properly. It makes its way back into the food chain and we consume it and it causing us untold damage. We may as well eat the coke bottle when we finish it.
Great topic. Awesome intentional idea. Outcome: more of a reality T.V. drama than an actual scientific documentary. I love Vice, but I think they messed this one up. People go out to sea often--I certainly have done it enough-- I do not need your experience of the voyage. What I was looking for was a more scientific view of the problem given in the title.
It just sucks how bad things have really become for the planet, and the list of reasons it won't be fixed is enormous. We destroyed something that statistically doesn't happen too often in our universe. A planet that can sustain life. And we destroyed it in a mere 100 years.
It's okay, humans will eventually kill themselves off (maybe everything else along with them) and another species of assholes will evolve, millions of years from now. Then maybe the cycle will repeat itself again..
What's great about it? The whole 3 part thing is 5 minutes quality material and an hour of reality TV human drama. Most watched the 3rd part literally just to see who will fuck Meredith.
So what, honestly. The phrase 'swearing like a sailor' exists for a reason, and after all, it's just another word we've decided to give some arbitrary meaning to. I'd be cussing, too, if I was subjected to such a depressing sight.
this was a waste of time, it had more info about the privileged input and drama of the three younger passengers than the supposed point of the documentary
What about some sort of process that takes the plastic, and shreds it into a kind of thin plastic strings. The plastic strings can be lightly coated with a thin urithane, and pressed together to form a consumer product like fancy house siding. I would not think this needs to be a huge expensive process, but rather done onsite at a recycling center in towns across the USA. Who knows, people might go around trying to collect plastics to manufacture plastic house shingles to,sell for profit. This would be a win win.
This is brilliant, honest and endearing journalism. I have followed Vice for a long time now and these episodes have been a perfect example of exactly why I do.
I'm speechless. This is ... just too much to process. Is there somewhere on the internets where i can find updated info? Some scientific website published research maybe?
***** First and most importantly, you've got to really ensure yourself by getting a greater education. (Not saying higher education means a better credible person) but being a publicist and journalist, you've got to get college education to really understand how to do it properly. To become a journalist for this problem- you have to gain an education that opens your mind to the gratitude of the problem itself. It's easy to ask these scientist who research this stuff "what's the problem", but its harder to really put that into context on a webpage if you don't know what they're talking about. My advice: Move to a coastal area: If you live in the U.S, California is your best bet. If you can't move, simply find ways to contact these scientists and call them when they're free to give you information. Educate yourself: Take classes such as Atomic Theory, Marine Biology, learn alot about Journalism Concentration, Media Law and Ethics, Liberal Arts, and take web design classes. If you do this- your not only being informative, you also have a huge foot in the door for people like the scientists on the field, who are attempting to reveal this to the word. If you where to get a PhD in Marine Biology, you'd be a huge factor to stopping this problem on a political scale- and if you can prove your worth to the world by being a credible source through your research and journalism, you can impact the world. But you don't need a PhD, what i mean is- you need to really educate yourself on the problem, and become a person that finds solutions that the world can take. If you don't' want to go that far and you simply just want to be a journalist and report on this dilemma, simply take journalism classes and net working that way you know how to articulate yourself in writing and use networking to understand how to bring people to your website.
***** I actually did think i was speaking to sometime in there early twenties lol. No matter though. As i've put into context; the best thing you can do is build your knowledge on web designing, Plastics effects on oceans, and networking. Best advice i can give to someone that has the goals your thinking about is really find some contacts on modern day scientists studying these kinds of things and ask them how you can contribute to making awareness. My advice would be; see if you can get contacts to some of the professors of Montana State University who've made steps towards studying it vastly. Other than that- i personally don't know if there is a website that really brings all these discoveries together. Would be nice to know if you ever do find it though. It's never to late to start one though.
***** honestly, without offense, being a 40y with just a strong passion but zero knowledge of your passion sounds very weird. Least but not least, scientists already have where to publish papers online and activists find a way to keep in touch. What you propose is a Facebook of the "ocean-hugger" and the world doesn't need it.
Claudio, if you're Italian, read a book by Nicolò Carmimeo, called "Come è profondo il mare". It covers plastic, extensively, but also mercury and bombs thrown into the sea. Packed with information, and extremely well written as well. As for the lady who wants to do something, why bash her for it? We can all do our bit. Either by blogging, or starting a community awareness campaign. And, OK, starting another website about it, collecting all the info out there. Why not? The more the better. Maybe she is not qualified to really sort out the useful information, but still, it's still better than nothing. Even sharing this on FB, silly as it might seem, helps build the awareness. It's a drop in the ocean, but every drop counts. Even if one person switches to net cotton shopping bags because of a FB share, it's something. And her neighbours ask why, and she explains, and then somebody else starts talking about it. Don't underestimate the impact of the lone individual.
Since vice didn’t really touch on any types of solutions, I figured I’d drop some things YOU can do that are easy and mostly free. Use up the stuff you have instead of buying new stuff. Use it up until it’s unable to be used ever again. Bring reusable coffee cups to Starbucks. This will even get you a discount. Reusable water bottle. Seriously. Do I even have to tell you this? Same with bags. Reusable bags. Buy bamboo tooth and hair brushes. Not plastic ones. There’s ways to make your own toothpaste. Avoid foods with plastic packaging or any packaging at all. If you find a co-op store, they usually have a bulk section where you can bring your own containers. MASON JARS ARE LIFE SAVERS. instead of buying new clothes, try to thrift them. I’ve found some absolute gems at thrift shops. Same with furniture or basic household things. THRIFT STORES ARE EVERYTHING. you don’t need a straw. Seriously. You’re not a toddler. Unless you have a medical condition, you probably don’t need a straw. If you do need a straw, there’s stainless steel and bamboo ones. Also, avoid paper towels and tissues. Believe it or not, regular towels and handkerchiefs exist. There’s definitely more we could all be doing. One thing I’ve noticed about the people around me, is they know the consequences. They just don’t care. This saddens me so much.
It's baffling to me that people are so offended by the language rather than the fucking consequences that our carelessness has caused. I'm hugely disappointed that it is the "smartest species" on the planet that's also fucking up the environment. I seemed to have caught on to the message that these people are putting out regardless of their cursing or not.
Holy shit. @ 19:50 it's so obvious what he is trying to do that it is actually hard to watch. He kept creeping in, and saying weird, meaningless stuff. She does/did too and you know she is saying that "this map -- blah blah" thing to just have an idle sentence while she thinks about what to do. Ughh, I cringed very hard til I saw that they actually hooked up. Besides that, this documentary made me incredibly sad to a human being. My children's children are going to live in such a shit hole; if the world isn't already dead from wars and global warming,
GREG BIEL ahh you’re one of those nerds who read somewhere a thing and that thing is his whole reality now. Stupid moron, there is a thing called developement which , sad for you tho, has been at a great pace in the past 30 years. Though these things may or may not be practiced in villages that are far away from cities but I haven’t seen anyone shitting in public or making food with cow dung. You’re type of people are called ignorant and you’re really at the top of that department. First visit India or analyse the growth of Indian market. By looking at your pesky face I can already tell my quality of life is better than yours even if I’m living in India.
GREG BIEL wow America is literally the biggest polluter in the world and you’re talking about a tragedy that happened in 1984. I can’t talk anymore cos I’m sure I’ll lose some brain cells. I’ve never seen such a dumb moron in my life. Get a life bald fuck.
the most disturbing thing about this video is the fact that most of the Vice video's about "not-that-really-important-problems" get like 20x more views than this one.... Seriously, are we just gonna stick our necks/heads into the sand like ostriches ??? Time is ticking people !! And it's ticking fast !!!
Amazing doc. And to those who cry about Thomas and Co saying "fuck" more than often; try living on a small boat on the absolute middle of nowhere for the first time. It affects your behaviour waaaay more than you could think of. They chose to not cut it out to show themselves in such a state, which again really shows you how far away our plastic shit goes. Hell i don't even understand how you are able to care about fucking curse words when the whole point of this doc is to show you our happy ignarant lives on shore (see part1 and 2) in contrast to what we're leaving in the ocean. (part 2 and 3)
Exactly, and the truth of the matter is; everyone NOT in the Ocean on a three week cramped quarters voyage to go and find PLASTIC, curse like the most disgusting sailors you'd ever find on any water voyage. And that's on LAND, at home, at work, everywhere. The complainers are the epitome of hypocrites. Do what I say don't do what I do mentality. aka TROLLS looking for attention to fill their otherwise empty zero friends life. Poor babies.
The implied sex was so weird. There's two episodes of describing the loneliness and boredom and hardships, then half an episode of discouragement about the state of the Earth and society... and then two people awkwardly easing their mental breakdown through sex? Then searching a little you see they are married and they... met on the cruise? I felt like it was a really strong image - like, the Earth is in danger and we probably can't do anything - and I kind of like that image... but I would like it in fake story, a movie, a novel. We're here talking about the dangers and challenges of ecology, down-to-earth and dark themes, and then suddenly magical love happens due to two weeks of emotional breakdown. I just don't know. It wasn't there to show that there is still hope in the human race or anything. It was just... weird.
From a sailor's perspective, these guys' journey was admirable. The documentary is enlightening especially for the BPA which most people really do not understand. I like that everyone showed their true colors... the truth about sailing abroad :)
Couldn't agree more. It's nice to see that there are still people out there who don't sacrifice their humanity for false professionalism. That's what I love about vice!
I found the swearing to be unnecessary and unprofessional as well. I am no prude and probably cuss daily, but if I were shooting a documentary, I would have restrained myself. It made the production seem cheaper and less credible.
that one young guy only knows one adjective? made watching his clips intolerable...I feel sorry for him his vocabulary is so limited......they DID dumb down our schools and he's living proof.
what happened in the one part they made it all dramatic but didnt explain what happened or show any footage.. all we saw was them yelling to stop while hes turning the crank, somebody bleeding from their head, the capt(or someone else) screaming theyre gonna punch the camera guy or something and then cleaning up glass. twas weak yall WEAK.
Wow so many people are SO pissed off about the swearing or the swear commenters. So typical on the internet where people burst out at others in strong words so easily. All the while complaining that Morton swears to sound more badass than he maybe is. I think after watching Vice for a while that caution for direct educational purposes is considered anyway, with or without the swearing. And at least the reporter feels like a real person, saying and describing the situation or emotions in his own 'filthy' way.
There's lots and lots of stupid, super dumb fuck... Totally mentally retarded people who like to focus on the wrong problems. I've been cussing like a sailor since I was 6 years old. Who gives a fuck about "bad language". If your pissed off about my french and your commenting about my fucking cuss words after seeing this fucked up shit. Then why even bother expressing an opinion, either way none of these comments matter, on UA-cam and the internet in general. No one really fucking cares about anything. Men women and children are being murdered, mutilated, tortured, starved, raped and sold as sex slaves in Africa. Every single fucking day I turn on the tv and see that the cops shot and killed another unarmed black man like a dog on the street. Last winter I go outside to smoke a cigarette and I see a homeless man slumped against the side of my house, covered in snow and near death. The ambulance took him off, I don't know if he lived. Thousands of homeless people freeze to death every year on the streets. There's enough food, homes and clothes to share with every person on this planet yet we don't do it. No one fucking cares about you. No one fucking cares. I lost my hope for humanity at a very young age. Fuck it. Why do I even bother?
ha ha - for a second I thought it was "Wilson" from "Cast Away". Seriously though, I really wish this could have had the swearing edited out and just cut to the chase. Don't need to see a "reality" aspect to something so important.
Why would you give a fuck about swearing? "You don't need to see a reality aspect of reality. Sorry that I'm coming across a bit ignorant but swearing is the last thing on anyone's mind, especially the Editors
Brilliant documentary. I really like this in particular because it not only brought across it's points about pollution, but also managed to give an interesting insight in what it's like to live on a ship. Fun as hell to watch, just a shame it's over really.
+StopMinecraftVIOLENCE pube hair REALLY how fucking long did it take for you to make up that and the name 😂😂 its fucking Minecraft if you don't want people to say shit get off the computer and get a fucking life and yes I know you weren't talking to me and calling me pubs hair. also its not even an insult just because you havent gone through puberty yet and are still a little boy the world doesn't revolve around you people have pubes.
***** wow you sure replied fast on that one. you can tell i really put a lot of time into considering my grammar on a fucking youtube comment. you're not exactly an author yourself, yet you're the one critiquing my grammar? why don't you take a blow at me not capitalizing words while your at it? you're obviously out of anything to say involving wit. feeble minded little losers who have gross long and TRULY greasy hair such as yourself are so predictable.. justify their ugly selfies with such detail.. you're becoming so compulsive in defending your gay little picture, i can really tell I struck a nerve now. are you going to cry? do you think your little contextualization of that ugly ass face somehow justifies the fact that you sit in your room when you're alone and take pictures of yourself? you're an atrocious bieber headed faggot who sports the vocabulary of a middle school student. that's the funniest and most ironic part about you resorting to my grammar, and greasy hair (fucking hypocrite..(YOUR PICTURE IS RIGHT THERE)) keep replying you salty little teenager, it joys me to make you feel stupid. ugly ass virgin.
A lot of people complaining about the boredom in watching this. I thought it was the perfect way to give the audience the same sense of boredom that comes with being confined to a small boat for days that the team must have had. I was going crazy by the end, I'm sure they the same. Also it served to underline the distance the trash travels to reach such a super-polluted area further giving us the sense of "out of sight, out of mind" that I'm sure was meant as a subconscious trigger.
Not all of it but a lot of it. They're also working on a "plastic" made from the outer shell of shrimps. It works just fine for most plastic applications and is biodegradable! The upside is also that the shells are a waste product from shrimp manufacturing and take very little effort to come by! :)
you can make a lot of stuff out of scrape wood -- they even make food additives our of scrape wood now -- grind it up wash it with chemicals -- cellulose -- look at the main ingredients in a lot of bread
the moon is also full of our garbage, also Mars, I think Venus is free of our shit, that is if you can breath Sulfur dioxide, Nitrogen and Carbon dioxide
I wish humans weren't so stupid. This was eye opening. A program like this needs to telecasted on every channel in the world. We need to wake up before it is to late.
Doesn’t deny it just doesn’t want to make stupid changes that will have little to no change on the planet but have a huge negative economic impact on us
btw those pieces are still big enough to observe by eye, I think the real shit will begin when these pieces degrade to atomic sizes. But you guys know that already anyway:(
The fact that always blows me away is just how quickly we did this. We've only been making great masses of 'plastic' for less than 100 years. Basically, only one or two generations.
psychotronik13 You mean you actually KNOW what Ocean? Hey, without CHEATING (even though you will), you should first tell everyone how many Oceans there are on Earth. Then if you get that right (WITHOUT CHEATING, Which you WILL DO anyway), you could then maybe come across like you'd even know.... which you don't. LOL Can't stand Boasting Trolls.
Top Notch WTF are on about? He said he can see it in the side bar and he knows the location more than likely if he's on that side of America he can see the ocean there too. Try actually reading the comment before you tell someone whats wrong with it
the point was, if you take ALL of the garbage in the gyre and combine it, it would be the size of texas... but like they said in the video, it is all spread out, and most not even on the surface, and lots of it is microscopic.. so looking for a mass the size of texas wont happen... but do you need to see a giant mass to know that how we handle our waste is wrong?
As a college student going in engineering, I think we as a society need to see both ends of the spectrum that engineering and technology provides. While we find ways to benefit ourselves as a society and species, little is truly considered toward the ramifications of the cost. On the flip side for this particular issue, while the magnitude of the problem is stressed in this documentary, I don't think it's an accurate representation. Yes, they got a lot of plastic and found plastic/life ratios up to 60:1, but all of the plastic that will be found only exists on the surface of the ocean. By this, the true damage and scale should be considered by the volume, making the impact seem much smaller in comparison. Based on the prior statement and information from the documentary, simple solutions can be started on. Two that come to mind: 1) filtration to the supply (which I assume is already done), 2) stop producing red/orange/yellow plastic (to lessen the amount of ingestion by fish, because as the captain mentioned, they are more enticed to eat the brighter colors).
Bravo, Vice, on this last part, but generally this whole episode! i highly appreciate the topic you have been willing to pursue as one of the very few on this planet (irony). it takes the same freudian defence stages against the guilt and responsibility that is out here for all of us (for that matter I highly recommend everyone to google the fields of ecopsychology and ecopsychoanalysis and see the relation they have to offer) and besides the only rational conclusion of reduction of pollution by reduction of production, austerity in use and behavior, and technological substitutes, it is almost unbearable to understand the fact that only due to the very last century of arrogantly assumed rise none of us is ever getting out of this and we shall fall hard eventually as too many, if not the majority of us will give up trying to atone for this up front......
Humans are the most intelligent parasite to ever rape this planet and we will be the first to suck the planet bone dry leaving behind an earth similar to that Wall-E movie! I had no idea the oceans were this bad! :-(
it was real the kiss at the end could have easily not been seen they knew it was critical for hits and frankly im glad the showed it it was a awesome beautiful moment its why we live for those few moments in time
One thing I'd like to see done (if possible) is vertical column samples. Like drop the sampling equivalent of one of those construction garbage shoots all the way to the bottom, and somehow draw off samples from all levels. Like a core sample.
His constant cursing was so annoying and unprofessional it takes away from the credibility of the project. I especially loved the quotes, "It feels like I'm on srooms", "I just want to get high," and "It feels like I'm on acid." These people need to talk to a PR professional if they want to make a bigger impact.
I agree, also was a bit put off by their lack of vocabulary, it was like um totally so like messed up and junk, oh yeah and fuck it's like oh my god, holy shit, fucking fuck, like wow...
One big thing I believe they didn't measure in the video was the duration of the time they were dragging the net behind the boat. If they were dragging for hours and only got one sample at a time, it wasn't very much. I feel like withholding that information really makes it seem like its not as big of a problem than they claim it is, so they covered it up.
I actually really like the rawness of these docos.... makes it feel like we are right there with them and that's the whole point of it. they aren't trying to make money they are trying to make awareness
Plot: A hippie gets so pissed off about an oceanic floating debree field that he travels to it with several other like minded tree hugers. In the process he learns that the situation is out of control and begins throwing a series of hissy fits and temper tantrums. After bashing humanity and the worlds plastic use, he believes he may have made a difference.
tac540 I hope someone drops your ass off in a dingy with no supplies way out in the middle of this. No worries though, you'll probably find a paddle and some packaged food.
I agree with +Jvenvell ; however, it was interesting for anyone who has never been on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Thank you vice for this very important upload. We must become more conscientious of our activities.
Joshiwu Thir Can you even identify in your own mind the source of your contempt? Why should they not want to earn as much as they can? Do you purposely avoid making more money? If you could easily make more than you are making right now with no downside, why wouldn't you? Your frustration seems shallow and misdirected.
Comments: 99.99% about the kiss Comments: 0.01% about pollution REALLY SMH. VICE pliz grow up. We don't need such silly distractions on such a sensitive issue
Considering how important the subject matter is here, this 'documentary' wastes a lot of time dealing with the unimportant issues of the Vice guys. Rather than providing a decent amount of facts it could basically be summarised:

Vice should try hiring people who actually care more about the issues they're reporting about than their own 1st world problems. In a documentary of over an hour (definitely could have been shorter) I know next to nothing about when and how this plastic problem built up or how it could be tackled in the future and how an ordinary person might be able to help change the situation. Jvenvell I agree with both Jvenell and HornyDolphin. All that interpersonal stuff did bore me, but that's what will hold the larger audience's attention, and this issue needs to reach as many as possible on a personal level.
Jvenvell Vice is a joke, complete joke. They serve NO purpose, reporting? Lol
+Jvenvell Oil is the problem, sad thing is, society thinks you're a hippie if you support alternative bio fuel sources, instead of oil companies hogging billions in profit. That could be used start massive jobs.

OK Vice! this should have been 1 video of getting there and 2 videos of being there and doing the research.
This is worse than an MTV reality show. These three really messed up what could have been a very informational documentary
Right...I hear garbage word (fword) coming out from this young dude.
I feel so awkward right now watching those two attempting a kiss
( your nose is running )
Why the fuck did this have to be about their entire trip out there? The fights? The cabin fever? That MTV Real World kiss?
This should have been a 15 minute documentary at most. There was some really interesting information in there, but all of the unnecessary drama from the documentarians that all fancy themselves protagonists made it really hard to get through.

I appreciate knowing how many conversations have sparked from this documentary. Thank you all so very much ~ it's up to each one of us now to make real changes in our own lives ~ BANNING PLASTICS and re-sharing so more people can do their part as well.
'its made of so many fucking pieces of net"
Tomas Morton - 2008
I don't like you.
The irony is we dump this shit in the ocean because we want rid of it and can't be arsed to dispose of it properly. It makes its way back into the food chain and we consume it and it causing us untold damage. We may as well eat the coke bottle when we finish it.
I think we all saw what REAPLY happened there at the end. She went along with it because of the IMPLICATION.
"She can't spit it all out if we continue to put it back in" Brilliance
For every F word Tomas Morton says, one piece of plastic goes into the ocean.
Ryan b ^ plus one on everything but "It's okay".
We didn't destroy the entire planet.. Earth will move on just fine as it has for millions of years.
Great footage... but whats with this awkward kissing ?? hahahahaaa
the plastic making them bloated, the needed something better to do....I guess..lol
What's great about it? The whole 3 part thing is 5 minutes quality material and an hour of reality TV human drama. Most watched the 3rd part literally just to see who will fuck Meredith.
wait so u were a virgin when you made the comment right? an see how stupid you are now right?
Changed me REAL Fast. Thank you for this information!
This was probably my favorite VICE series. I've never seen anyone interpret the claustrophobic boredom that is life at sea into film so well before.
Yes! Because that was the point of the fucking documentary right.
Too bad this video only has 700,000 views not 8 billion.
The vocabulary diversity of this documentary is astounding. "Fucking, shit" and so on are the key highlights...
This would be a win win.
if all people recycled.
Actually, humans left trash on the moon as well.
My advice:
Move to a coastal area: If you live in the U.S, California is your best bet.
"How dare you".
"I saw your channel"
Childish person spotted. Time to go.
HAHAHAHAH OH MY GOD THERE IS EVEN A PART WHERE THEY SAY " DO YOU NEED MORE SOY MILK? "WHERE IS THE SOY MILK" HAHAHHAHA I CANT IM DEAD
SpaceApe yeah thats pretty hilarious
I live in New Zealand it's beautiful... don't come over.
So do I and every beach I've been to this summer has had more plastic floating around than seaweed. It's really not that much better here.
As the saying goes, knowledge is power...thank you for making this and holding all of us responsible. Great job editing. Amazing footage. Hats off!!
My children's children are going to live in such a shit hole; if the world isn't already dead from wars and global warming,
GREG BIEL it’s 3 am here, just lemme sleep old man.
And it's ticking fast !!!
your hyperbole is extreme my friend get a gip lol your not wong but you look crazy to the crazys ya feel
Image how pure, clean and pristine the entire planet would be WITHOUT humans.
bigart1993 I couldn't agree more
Thanks guys, great documentary!! VICE is the best!
This is making me cry more than the Lion King did.
Poor babies.
amazing! "what chance do have with land?" brilliant!
Thank you for taking the time to make this documentary. It is one step in the right direction.
This was great.... A lot better than I expected.... Thanks again Vice
Ok so where is this island you speak of and the mystery’s it holds...
It was just... weird.
20:she got the D, he got the V worth 20:00
From a sailor's perspective, these guys' journey was admirable. The documentary is enlightening especially for the BPA which most people really do not understand. I like that everyone showed their true colors... the truth about sailing abroad :)
Couldn't agree more. It's nice to see that there are still people out there who don't sacrifice their humanity for false professionalism. That's what I love about vice!
I found the swearing to be unnecessary and unprofessional as well. I am no prude and probably cuss daily, but if I were shooting a documentary, I would have restrained myself. It made the production seem cheaper and less credible.
That's what vice is known to do.
that one young guy only knows one adjective? made watching his clips intolerable...I feel sorry for him his vocabulary is so limited......they DID dumb down our schools and he's living proof.
what happened in the one part they made it all dramatic but didnt explain what happened or show any footage.. all we saw was them yelling to stop while hes turning the crank, somebody bleeding from their head, the capt(or someone else) screaming theyre gonna punch the camera guy or something and then cleaning up glass. twas weak yall WEAK.
RC Codes then the guy with beard fucked that blonde someone had to,i think thats what they were leading to lol
Sails got fucked up, samples were left out, geeza hit his head, sample smashed and everyone got pissed off!
If we could just start using hemp to replace plastic, it would help.
The only chance humanity has at survival is anarchy
For how long this documentary is it's very light on information....
This last part is really the only part worth watching.
Ok so there is a lot of plastic in the water, but....where is this plastic island?....wtf
there is no island made of plastic but if you put put all the plastic bags, pellets together it would equal a huge island
+The Beast I want to see a plastic island thou! lol
MWAsPRODUCTIONS i want to see a flawless diamond cut planet
Fuck it. Why do I even bother?
max isom
Great comment !!
I saw a man on the street with no head, and nobody stopped to see if he's dead
Suspicious Tumbleweed* Thats normal in our world
BinAlladin
Really? Because if they have no head you can just assume they are dead. So why check? ...
ha ha - for a second I thought it was "Wilson" from "Cast Away".
Thank you for showing me what the issue is. I thought it was a garbage dump on top of the water, not particulates infused thoroughly into it.
wasn't the album Plastic Beach by the Gorillaz inspired by this garbage island thing?
When will we realise this planet does not belong to us, we belong to her.
We need her to live, she does not.
*****
I stopped pooping 10 years ago.Got my butt sealed. Highly recommended !
Dec 2019. There's a guy on the Joe Rogan podcast called Boyan Slat. Him and his team are currently taking tons out and succeeding. Jre #1104
Thank you.
Brilliant documentary. I really like this in particular because it not only brought across it's points about pollution, but also managed to give an interesting insight in what it's like to live on a ship. Fun as hell to watch, just a shame it's over really.
It was total shit, just a bunch of retarded kids cursing and moaning, not interesting at all
Trying to out-hipster the hipsters, are we? Good luck with that, pube-hair.
+StopMinecraftVIOLENCE your videos are funny though
Thanks for the documentary Vice.
Sea Captain said, "he who dies with the most toys wins"
What a humble adventure this is.
YOU COULD MAKE ALL THESE PLASTIC THINGS OUT OF HEMP -- THAT BIODEGRADES
Not all of it but a lot of it. They're also working on a "plastic" made from the outer shell of shrimps. It works just fine for most plastic applications and is biodegradable!
The upside is also that the shells are a waste product from shrimp manufacturing and take very little effort to come by! :)
you can make a lot of stuff out of scrape wood -- they even make food additives our of scrape wood now -- grind it up wash it with chemicals -- cellulose -- look at the main ingredients in a lot of bread
yes
I blame all of you, its all ur fault. I moved to the moon 9 years ago.
ehh... how come I have never saw you?
This guy lives In the same block we moved to the dark side of the moon 9 years ago Neil Armstrong is chilling with us
khaled al lies they was fake landings
the moon is also full of our garbage, also Mars, I think Venus is free of our shit, that is if you can breath Sulfur dioxide, Nitrogen and Carbon dioxide
hackinblack the moon has garbage on it too.
sad that this has under a million views being 4 years old :( RIP humanity
I wish humans weren't so stupid. This was eye opening. A program like this needs to telecasted on every channel in the world. We need to wake up before it is to late.
Remember that it's 2019 and the USA still denies climate change 😂😂😂, the earth in 50 years will be unrepairable.
Doesn’t deny it just doesn’t want to make stupid changes that will have little to no change on the planet but have a huge negative economic impact on us
John Smith the us doenst contribute plastic to the ocean why make drastic economic change for literal almost zero impact that’s my take on it
John Smith almost 95 percent of plastic in the worlds oceans is from 4-5 rivers all in the Middle East
Just reading the comments here by itself shows that we are fu@ked.
yessir we are fucked now its sad that we all did it but I mean did we know then noo. an I mean usssss
btw those pieces are still big enough to observe by eye, I think the real shit will begin when these pieces degrade to atomic sizes. But you guys know that already anyway:(
You mean molecular
If they did break down into atomic sizes that would be ideal
Suspicious Tumbleweed* thanx for correcting me
this is very deep. 13:58-15:17
Best vice documentary ever.
The fact that always blows me away is just how quickly we did this. We've only been making great masses of 'plastic' for less than 100 years. Basically, only one or two generations.
19:51 the beginning of..... bowww chica boww wowwww
releas the sextape
"Check the engine room" LOOOOOOL
Why is it called garbage island? I didn't see an island of plastic, yeah loads of bits in the water but an island twice the sizeof Texas. Where?
psychotronik13 yeah I seen it in another video, just not in this. Kind of misleading title though
psychotronik13 You mean you actually KNOW what Ocean?
Gaming With Jessika
There is a big island size of Texas, look in the side bar at some of the other videos
That love scene, damn :D
Did I miss the islands of plastic trash? I didnt see any in the 3 vids you produced.
23:21. There is trash on the moon as well. :/
in the end, two of them came ;)
All horrifying shit aside.... That kiss was pretty hot.
Great Vid. Thanks!
Excellent documentary. Thank you.
Bravo, Vice, on this last part, but generally this whole episode! i highly appreciate the topic you have been willing to pursue as one of the very few on this planet (irony). it takes the same freudian defence stages against the guilt and responsibility that is out here for all of us (for that matter I highly recommend everyone to google the fields of ecopsychology and ecopsychoanalysis and see the relation they have to offer) and besides the only rational conclusion of reduction of pollution by reduction of production, austerity in use and behavior, and technological substitutes, it is almost unbearable to understand the fact that only due to the very last century of arrogantly assumed rise none of us is ever getting out of this and we shall fall hard eventually as too many, if not the majority of us will give up trying to atone for this up front......
watch the language, not professional at all. Good topic but the guy messed it all up with that garbage mouth
Humans are the most intelligent parasite to ever rape this planet and we will be the first to suck the planet bone dry leaving behind an earth similar to that Wall-E movie! I had no idea the oceans were this bad! :-(
yesss i had the same thought
All 7 billion of us of need to watch this!
it was real the kiss at the end could have easily not been seen they knew it was critical for hits and frankly im glad the showed it it was a awesome beautiful moment its why we live for those few moments in time
One thing I'd like to see done (if possible) is vertical column samples. Like drop the sampling equivalent of one of those construction garbage shoots all the way to the bottom, and somehow draw off samples from all levels. Like a core sample.
Why they nerdy guy keeps on saying the f word
Because he's a tough edgy guy and he wants the viewers to know it.
marudoethiopia
profanity doesn't make you tough. it's actually annoying the way he uses it.
Vol Can I agree. That why my comment sounds the way it does.
It's called "nerd rage" .... Usually comes about after a lifetime of virginity
I curse too now and then but he's annoying, literally cannot speak in another way
His constant cursing was so annoying and unprofessional it takes away from the credibility of the project.
Really good documentary, I liked the whole story, including the side-stuff about traveling on a boat. A cool experience watching this.
we should watch films like these in school, learning our history and how we impact it in real time
They guy sure does cuss a lot.
He's a whinny little bitch hipster
cause its a fucked up situation
what did the kissing have to do with this movie. we're they dating?
Try being stir crazy for three weeks. There is sometimes candid romance.
I thought it captured sailor life. This has been my favorite VICE series so far.
HCsonicknx I think you have a loose grasp of the word "candid" guy.
The very sad thing is that this was taped around 5 years ago, and nothing has changed. Very sad.
I agree with +Jvenvell ; however, it was interesting for anyone who has never been on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Thank you vice for this very important upload. We must become more conscientious of our activities.
concluded it part three huh? for a little more add revenue? Vice is garbage.
Chill out.
I could condense any vice video to a sound bite and a photo, yet they somehow stretch the sensation out over multiple clips.
Joshiwu Thir Can you even identify in your own mind the source of your contempt? Why should they not want to earn as much as they can? Do you purposely avoid making more money? If you could easily make more than you are making right now with no downside, why wouldn't you? Your frustration seems shallow and misdirected.
I just think the tittle of a video on youtube should be an accurate description. SOmething like "us in a boat for a long while."
Joshiwu Thir
LOL
i dont like the narration. i think everyone should stop having kids
Those jars they show off are like the world's most deadly snow globes.
This video just turned into a reality show
Comments: 99.99% about the kiss
REALLY SMH. VICE pliz grow up. We don't need such silly distractions on such a sensitive issue
