      I don't really get the hoopla about Laine. I understood it when he was drafted and for the first few seasons but isn't he kind of a bust? Isn't he basically like a Pierre Luc-Dubois maybe combined with a little Mitch Marner? A super talented player that is up and down. Can't be consistent. Gets super lazy. Doesn't have an interest in playing a defensive game. Fades away when the going gets tough. And puts way to much attention on his own ego and image? I'm not even trying to troll. Didn't I just describe why he was traded from Winnipeg and described his entire stint in Columbus?

      @@esperago yeah he struggled but the dude is only 26. now its a complete change of scenery and he wants to play here. he also has a 2 year contract so its not much of a risk even at 8M. if he does good we get a 40 goal scorer that's happy to play here and we can lock him up for our top 6. if he fails then we let him walk in 2 years.

  • @romaliop
    @romaliop 23 дні тому +60

    There's one very intriguing thing about his career stats that is worth noticing:
    - In Winnipeg he was scoring a ton of PP goals, but not achieving that much on even strength. The Jets had a killer power play in those seasons, but could not get him a true top6 center for even strength as Scheifele was glued to Wheeler for the most part.
    - In Columbus, he scored well on even strength, but didn't do much on the power play. The Blue Jackets had an abysmal power play and realistically didn't have a single true top6 center in the roster.
    So while on a cursory glance it might look like his game regressed in Columbus based on the stats, in truth he has taken huge steps in becoming a more complete player on even strength despite playing with somewhat mediocre linemates and defensemen for the most part. And on top of that, there is still quite a lot of untapped potential for power play scoring provided that the Habs can utilize him better than the team with arguably the worst coached power play in the entire league over the past half a dozen years.

      @dmofOfficial 23 дні тому +1

    • @timkitchen692
      @timkitchen692 23 дні тому +1

      That is all he is a PP specialist and little more. He has been a defensive liability his whole career, even in Winnipeg where he had a lot of support. He couldn't handle the pressure there so how everyone thinks he can in Montreal I don't quite understand. I don't consider - 57 over the last 5 seasons a complete player. So while producing 141 points in the last 5 years he has been on the ice for 198 goals against. Will he help win a few games sure but how many will he cost them in return simply because he doesn't care to be defensively responsible?

    I think Harris is underestimated. 24yo reliable d-man who puts up about 20pts playing limited minutes. He was never going to be top 4. As 6th defensemen go, he was pretty good and I'm sure he'll do well in Columbus or elsewhere. Ultimately, Habs went with Struble's physical play over Harris' slight advantage in points. I get it, someone had to go and Harris was the odd man out. We need physical players.
    Don't get me wrong, the trade is a landslide. Over the last 30 years, all we got was excuse after excuse from Habs GMs. Yet Hughes keep getting it done. Over and over...

    Laine was one of the ones I was pretty much against acquiring NGL. Him and PLD among a couple of others. There's nothing I hate worse than a player who stops playing because he'a unhappy where he is. Dude is making almost 10 Mil a year FFS. Put a smile on your face and play your damn heart out UNTIL you get the trade you so desperately want. That's the attitude I like to see. Very rare though.
    But after watching the interview and hearing the stats and contract situation, and also the price we paid to get him, it's a really good chance to take on the guy. As you said, it's 2 years. If it doesn't work out, it won't be a huge albatross around their neck for 6 years or so. And giving up ONE single defenseman is win win because it makes much needed space!
    So I guess you could put me in the HAPPY column about this one.

    • @thierrymoore8016

      I think the real reason for his "stops playing" was the loss of his father, his mentor and his best friend, much more than being unhappy where he is. He never really got over it. He probably worsened the situation by using alcohol and other substances to dull the pain. Last year, probably realizing he wasn't going anywhere, he enrolled in the NHLPA program. Columbus was too closely associated in his mind with that pain and I understand his desire to make a fresh start elsewhere.

    I love that trade. The Habs have lots of young d- man so they could afford to trade one. Even if Laine doesn't work out it's not a big deal.

    I was hesitant about getting Laine for the Habs, but (salary cap aside), was a great deal. Sad to see Harris go, but this may open a spot for Hutson or someone else. Hopefully, Laine can return to game shape and help the team. 👍

    I m cautiously optimistic. I wasnt for Laine trade had his value been higher. I liked Harris but knew Harris and Barron would be the 2 probably be the first 2 to go . And i think clb picked who they preferred of the choices. So seeing how little we had to give up ,i think its low risk high reward. Nothing to lose. So if it works out awrsome it has the potential. If it doesnt they unload him towards contract end. We dont lose much . Its a smart chance. So in that regard its a smart move for habs in that they get a top six player who can score and if he finds his footing this will be awesome . If it doesnt we didnt lose much, cause either we we have to unload a couple of d men to make room. I m cautious ,butkind happy with giving this a chance cause we basically got him so cheap. So way to go Hughs . And if it works wow ,this could really turn into something .It s really up to Laine to make it work. This could turn into a steal. And if it doesnt we didnt gi e up the farm for him. Were fortunate that this trade habs had upper hand dur to hiz value dropping. My excitement is if it works what a steal . We know he has the talent. And the habs system maybe exactly what he needs to find his game. And if he does this is going to be quite a steal. Its worth the risk since we got for so little . Either way its a trade i can live with . He will add the scoring we need . He has a wicked shot . This is a very interesting trade. Even though i m cautious ,the what if s are exciting. I knew their would be a trade before opening game . I ve been saying it since after draft. I knew Hughs was going to try and keep his promise . Hes a much better fit for second line than Anderson. No matter what he is rralky a top six player ,that we know . So i can say that much. Hes definitely a better fit for top six than our bottom six players. So im cautiously optimistic on this trade. I m at peace with it because worse case senario , it doesnt work out we didnt give up alot . So i m happy with it in the end . He has more upside than the Drouin trade. Go habs go .

  • @tchevrier

    I think it's a good a trade for the Habs.
    Positive:
    The guy is a pure goal scorer. Something the Habs desperately need.
    It actually improves their cap situation as they will be able to realize more cap relief when Price goes on the IR.
    There was a backlog of d-men on the left side. This frees up space for Hutson
    They received a 2nd rd pick, which could be pretty high considering how Columbus is going,
    He gives them much needed size and physically up front.
    Negative:
    The guy is coming off a shoulder injury and mental health issues, so there's huge question marks.
    When he was scoring goals, he was still a bit of a liability on D.

    From far away the Habs look like they are in a similar position as the jets were when he was drafted. A handful of forgotten vets and some young bucks who have yet to show their full potential, of course Montreal doesn’t have the same negatives as Winnipeg once did. Those being the toxic dressing room and depressing city. I’m really hoping to see this guy succeed. I remember a time where us jets fans were almost sure that we had gotten lucky by drafting liane instead of Matthew’s. It’s gotta be hard sitting in the shadow of the superstar you were drafted behind. And for that, I’m gonna scoop him up in fantasy a round or two earlier than what would be expected.

    If Columbus can actually find good players to spend their cap space on now, this does feel like a win-win. The Habs can experiment with someone to better use Caulfield and Suzuki's primes while they figure out how to exit the rebuild and the Blue Jackets... well, they got a couple mil to try and do the same.

    Jets fan opinion. Laine has a top 3 shot in the league. Enjoy it. He is a little soft so shelter him on the 2nd line and give him first unit powerplay. Dont get your expectations to high expect 30 goals and be happy when he his 40 he plays better when he is confident so pump his tires by setting a low bar

    the only downside of this trade, i feel is the cap hit. Either than that, its another W for the Habs. depth scoring, was an issue and hopefuly he helps solve that issue. Im not expecting 40 big ones out of the gate, but with the amount of games we lost by 1 goal, i feel this season is a step in the right direction. Another small step up the mountain. Go habs Go! I'm sad to see Harris go, the 2nd round pick helps considering that there is no retained salary whatsoever on Laine's contract. Now, I'm happy to see Laine join the Habs, there are quite a few combinaisons that could be interesting with him on the roster. Do we want Newhook on the second line or as a third centreman? I'm curious to see what are the organization's intentions for a guy like Joshua Roy........and there are players like Owen Beck, Michael Hage, Alex Barré Boulet, Florian Xhekaj (okay not a centerman, but maybe we want that kid on our third or fourth line as soon as this season or the following one) ...Somehow, I'm hoping that this will take a bit of pressure off Demidov's arrival with the team....I expect great things from hime, but if we already have legitimate top 6 players and a bunch of interesting candidates for an offensive 3rd line, maybe Demidov will be able to take all the time he needs to learn what he has to learn and gain all the confidence he needs to gain in order to become the player we hope he'll become.
