    Big fan of Donaldson Blue or Amsoil as their filters have much better media and filtration is superior. Just re-did my 5.9. It’ll be getting the Amsoil bypass filter setup with the full flow changed at each oil change and bypass every second. The thickness of the media is called loft.

    I never understood the foolishness of buying expensive diesels and then buying bargain filters to save money. Working in the field for many years I noticed by far the most common filters on commercial engines was Baldwin and second was Napa gold/Wix (oil, fuel, and air) Good video.

    Definitely solid knowledge. I've compared filters that came off my truck. If you cut the filter media off in a neat manner and unroll it and measure, you'll see that you actually get more media in the better brands. In 2 of mine that cut open the difference was by more than 11 inches in length at the same height. As you said the Napa (wix) filter is restricted. My truck would cold start at over 100 psi of oil pressure on my mechanical guage and cruise at about 85psi. I changed filters and now I see about 55-60 at cruise, 39-40 at idle.

      That would be ph3976 I think since then it’s ph3976A and the A means adjusted. So whatever the problem was fixed. Still private diesel truck companies still recommend doing short OCI’s when running that filter and it’s not a bad filter. It’s just not for the long-haul like some other filters.

    Fleetguard is the filter division of Cummins. I heard they make a lot of Mopar filters too, as well as several other private labels. Those Pennzoil and Fram filters might use the old cellulose filter media that people started making like a hundred years ago but nowadays is only in a few maker's budget models.

  • @MichaelM-to4sg
    @MichaelM-to4sg Рік тому +1

    I agree build quality, such as bonding of media to end plates, is a factor. The top plate port size and quantity, too is important. The biggest factor however is quality of media. It’s less about pleat density and more about filtration. All oil filter media, at least of decent quality, has an SAE rating for filter efficiency. They will all provide an “absolute rating”, which defines the largest particles allowed to flow through media. They then will publish a 95+% efficiency rating which can vary, though it will all be at least 95%.
    That Baldwin, which is cellulose media, is 30 micron absolute, 12 micron @95%, per Baldwin. Fleetguard, also a cellulose media, is 40 micron absolute 15 micron @95%. Wix I do not have the specs but it’s also a cellulose media and I believe similar spec to Baldwin.
    My personal favorite is Donaldson, though they make 2 versions for Cummins 5.9/6.7L. The White line is cellulose media, 40 micron absolute and 20 microns @99%. The Donaldson Blue line is synthetic media; 30 micron absolute and 15 micron @99%.
    I’d suggest the Donaldson Blue as the best oil filter available but the Baldwin is a good 2nd option.
    If you’re using Fram, Pennzoil, Purilator or similar, I’m betting truck is a lease 🤣

    Sir I worked for a utility company that had a diesel power plant . It has since been dismantled but it had some really big diesel engines there and I think the filters were Baldwin . I pretty sure that napa is wix also . I use lube finer filters on my truck and so far no problems that I know of . Many years ago I was told that not to use a certain filter because it came apart and stopped up the cooling jets . But that was a long time ago so that was surely fixed

      It's been discovered that the new Cummins engine needs to run T5 10W-30 Synthetic Blend (NOT 15W-40 or 5W-40) due to the increased amount of port holes, and smaller in size, in the block. I had a buddy of mine find this out the hard way. His motor blew up. According to him, the dealership informed him after it was too late. But research it. My info is more or less hear-say.
