I purchased this to put a DJI Mavic drone and mirrorless camera in, and it exceeded my expectations. Build quality is great and it is pretty easy to work with. If there was any complaint, it would be that the foam was a bit hard to separate near one edge, but honestly that is just nit picky. I plan on purchasing the small one for my racing drone here in the near future.

I buy an Apache case for each pistol I buy. They're not Pelican, but they don't really have to be for what I'm using them for. I just want a case that's better than what typically comes with a gun. Apache cases fit the bill for an attractive price point.
Lex5576 even in the bizarro world of Apache case pricing, it makes way more sense to buy a dozen small ones than one huge case. I don’t own guns, but the rifle case looks awesome. I wish we could just use the rifle case without anyone thinking it’s a gun case.
I was looking at the large one to put 2 guns in along with mags/bullets. My question is do we have to cut the foam to shape the guns into it or just put the guns and mags on the bottom foam and place the top foam over it? Also whats up with all the foam anyway? top has egg shell looking foam then the layers of foam then the bottom foam do we need that many for guns? Lastly can it be used on planes? Thanks very new to guns and need a case for a 9mm and .38 special and bullets/mags hopefully.
@@dam1120 I bought the next size up (2800) from the smallest to put my Ruger Mark IV target pistol in. Depending on the size of the pistols, you might be able to get two of them in there, maybe just one extra magazine each. I think a pair of 1911s could fit pretty good. Probably be best to get the 3800 so you'll have ample room. I think the 3800 is about $40. In the 2800, the foam is two layers about 2 1/2" thick, pre-cut so you can remove the squares. There's another thinner layer of foam underneath the two thicker layers, but this thinner layer isn't pre-cut. Acts as just a buffer. I store only one pistol each, so I can get all the magazines and a box of ammo in there.

I bought 1800 $11 HF. With 20% coupon. I put my Glock 27 in it and two loaded mags. Tossed it in pool few times from a distance. Dunked it, kept it down about foot for little bit. No leaks. Keep water out. That’s more than what a little rain or splash, or sitting it in rain storm would do. It held up. $11 can’t go wrong.
I’ve noticed on the Apache latches become easier to open over time, but are still secure
I recently compared my old Pelican 1750 to my new Apache 9800; Which are nearly the same size. Using product stats from websites and my own observations, this is what I found:
Price: Pelican $249 (8 years ago), Apache $149 ($115 after item-specific coupon code)
Internal dimensions: Pelican 50.50" x 13.50" x 5.25", Apache 50-3/8" x 13-5/8" x 5-1/8"
Exterior dimensions: Pelican 53.00" x 16.00" x 6.12", Apache 53" x 16" x 6-1/8"
Weight: Pelican 25.6 lb, Apache 22.65 lb
Dust proof: Equal
Drop resistant: Relatively equal. Pelican has thicker walls, Apache has thicker external ribs
Water resistant: Pelican has IP 67 (submersible up to 1m for 30 mins), Apache has IP 65 (protected against normal pressure and light water jets)
O-ring and ridge size: Equal
Pressure Equalization: Pelican is automatic, Apache is manual
Lock reinforcement: Equal (Pelican has 2 extra, but not reinforced by steel)
Number of latches: Equal
Latch design: Pelican has "Double-Throw" latches, Apache has regular ones. "Double-throw" just makes it easier to unsnap and does not increase seal or security. This can cause them to come open when dropped.
Number of handles: Pelican 2, Apache 3. Apache has one extra tightly folded handle on the wheel end.
Interior foam (top): Pelican has flat upper layer, Apache has egg-crate style
Interior foam (center): Relatively equal pick/pluck and peel, equal perforation size.
Interior foam (bottom): Equal
Wall thickness: Pelican 1.1cm, Apache 1cm
Polypropylene quality: Pelican is a harder version of poly which gives less flex and is potentially more brittle. Apache is a softer, more malleable version that gives more flex, but less likely to crack.
Hinge quality: Equal (both vibration-welded, stainless pinned, captive on one side, open on the other)
Number of hinges: Pelican 4, Apache 5
Honestly one of the better items at Harbor Freight. These make GREAT pistol/range cases. The back latch pins are a security flaw but at that point if someone has it, they’re gonna get in it anyway.
I'm impressed that the Apache has the metal on the padlock thru. I will buy it, thats for sure.
I just picked up one of the Apache 3800 cases and the one I got didn't have just 1 layer of foam. The one I got on 5/3/18 had 3 layers of foam inside and made it much more adjustable for fitting the items inside.
I have a large one & a medium one. The Medium one's latches are VERY hard to open & close, while my large one's latches are very comparable to the Pelican 1450 Case for resistance.
I keep a small emergency off grid power & L.E.D. lighting system in mine and it works great for my needs.
I've got two that have held up better than any pelican case I've ever had.
Came across the Apache cases today at HF and they feel really well built, super nice cases for the price.
Just make sure you close the screw when near water.
I googled different case options for the AR9 pistol I built and this pops up on my "recommended" youtube videos. Always being watched. I found a like new Jupiter saxophone case at a pawn shop and talked him down on it. Its inner dimensions are almost exactly what i needed for it when the brace is collapsed. I pulled the felt back & cut some of the foam out, now the AR fits snuggly. I'll eventually replace w solid foam i can cut precisely. Some of the heavy duty cases i saw were around $200. I Only need it for transporting to the range so I am happy.
Pick up the larger for off roading. Love being able to keep my tools and recovery gear in these and throw them around. Def right for the price and application.
I saw these today. Waterproof isn't a requirement for me so the valve is a non issue. I like the padded hard case for equipment.
I agree! These cases float, so I can’t imagine a situation where the case would be forced underwater. Just don’t ride on the Titanic, it’s not worth it.
Well some guys need ten to be watertight and if your trying to protect expensive equipment then I would step up to a Pelican. But if your storing a gun or I bought one for a small laptop then they should do just fine. Plus HF also came out with some cool new colors, Orange, Yellow, would like to see an all white one.
I will be picking up many of those Apache cases. You just can't beat those prices!

I just bought two and I like them. I only advise to open them up and look at all the layers of foam before you buy them.
I got one of the Apaches a few weeks ago, and they're nice especially for the money but they're definitely not a pelican. I'm going to get a pelican to replace the Apache, I just needed an good hard case for my camera and drone and happened to be at harbor freight and went ahead and grabbed one and it has fulfilled its use.
I came across these yesterday at a new Harbor Freight that opened up by my Truck Yard...the prices were too good so I needed to do some homework! This maybe what I have been looking for to safely store all my camera equipment and handle the rigors of Trucking!

Go pelican yes it is a little bit more expensive but with it you get a better and longer lasting case not to mention the best warranty. These appaches have only 90 day warranties as pelican has a lifetime warranty.
@Bob A Not to mention, I don't know a single person who has broken an Apache or any other brand's hard case except in accidents (like dropping it over a bridge or something). At that point, the warranty isn't going to matter compared to the lost goods inside.

I would highly recommend spraying the cubes AFTER you have your area cut out with plasti-dip spray . It binds the foam cubes to make them stronger . 9 bucks at auto zone , and comes in different colors
Yeah, I really hate the pick apart foam. I get it is for people without tools to use, but I rather just get a slab of foam. A foam cutter is not hard to make, it is just a hot wire.
@@DaveSmith-cp5kj what about using a turkey carver? I heard some people do that. I have never used the Pull Apart foam or anything
@@brendalg4 To cut foam you basically melt it away which leaves the clean cut. A turkey carver would be too messy IMO. Just take a wire and 9v battery and you got a foam cutter.
I'm using the 3800 for a motorcycle trunk. Happy so far. not hard to secure to the bike, or to secure.
I’ve got 2 of the xtra large Apache cases. I think they are the 4800 series cases. Caught them on sale at Harbor Freight for less than $100 for both. Nice cases.

I use the 4800 for my camera gear and I love it. I'd imagine they'd work good with Guns/Tools. They make them in other colors now. I've seen the 4800s and the longer case in Black, Green, Orange, Yellow, and FDE which is what mine is.
The Pelicans used to utilize a screw valve as well.
I bought the 3800 for $29.99 at harbor freight last year and I love it. I bought a GoPro and then accessories from Amazon. It took me half an hour to get everything seated properly. Now that it's black Friday, I just bought a $400 Canon EOS Rebel T6 with two lenses and I wanted another case. I went with the 4800 and I think it's perfect for large sized camera's. I got this for $59.99. I just can't beat it! I love picking the foam apart and setting whatever equipment inside.

@@ibanezrg320fm Man, I'd have to totally agree, Michael. I mean, there are *some* things where it makes sense to get a little snobby. But these cases are great. No need to get fleeced by Pelican, right.
I have the Apache rifle case ad for the price it's really a great buy. It is quite heavy but it has quality wheels so that doesn't matter all that much. If I ever fly with my guns again, I'll feel pretty comfortable that even luggage handler apes won't damage my guns.

You may be able to get the pressure button from Pelican and install it on an Apache.
I have Pelican cases and just ordered a Apache. Screwing that vent closed is a lot more secure than the Pelican vent. The Pelican tends to let a few drops of water in before sealing where if you screw the Apache vent closed no water or moister at all. On the other hand who intentionally throws their case in the water.
I'll add that if you buy the Apache ones at HF, be sure to look at the SKU numbers and prices. I went to buy the 2800 and they were listed at two different prices for the same exact model. I verified the SKU numbers on the case tags and bought the one priced cheaper.
I bought several of all sizes for microphones and recording gear. Sure, would've preferred Pelicans and still might have to get some for their larger sizes, BUT the Apaches are fine. Better than fine. The foam is easy to custom fit contents, I usually end up with a surplus of foam. Don't mind the feel of the latches. Have not had to try pressure valve yet. I wonder if you can replace the Apache with a Pelican valve? Overall, great value and item!
I used the foam for my guitars. They are perfect sizes for my guitars with Floyd Rose tremolos. Especially great for recording guitars. Take the foam, tie a string around it and slide it through the springs on the inside of the guitar springs. Also put more foam between the springs and body of a guitar. And put foam near the tuning keys under the strings. Makes any weird noises go away for recording. Many people use foam straps or soft material straps for guitars without a locking nut to wrap around. You see it more today than in the past.
The valve seems like a complete non issue for most people. For me the likelihood of it being dropped in water is pretty low, and even if it did, I don't imagine the thing would flood instantly. Even with the valve open, as long as you pulled it right back out of the water, (which I imagine you would still do if you cared about what was in the case enough to buy one) I doubt there would be enough water in it to ruin the contents. You'd probably just have to pull the foam out and let it dry in the sun.
These are great cases for the price but they are NOT Pelicans. The Apache 5800 is the direct competitor to the Pelican 1510 Carry-on case. Having used both and flown with them several times with them packed full of tools I can attest to their quality and durability. The Apache consistently had an overall weight of 30lbs with the tools packed in Kaizen foam and not free to "slosh around" in there. The pelican has my hand tools and weighs in at almost 60lbs. That's double the weight being thrown around and dropped by TSA and baggage handlers. The Apache rolling handle has completely broken off after only 3 months of service (about 5 or 6 round trips through the air and daily vehicle transport). It was hanging on by the one side for a while but the very next flight it was gone. Also I'll add that the screws will need tightening as soon as you get it home so they don't back out on you. They must not torque them much at the factory. The plastic is different between the two. The Apache is just a regular Plastic that is much softer and more easily marred, whereas the Pelican has a reinforced plastic. I'm not sure if it glass fiber reinforced or what, but you can see and feel it in the texture. The Apache has been replaced by another Pelican 1510 which is going strong several flights later next to it's older brother. The Apache lives at home where I haven't yet found a use to repurpose it for. It's still waterproof but not really as portable without the handle. The Valve is a major disadvantage when flying also. If you forget to crack it loose the case will be suctioned close so tightly you have to stand on the handle and pry it open. The Lid will be visibly caved in as well. Also, the latches have arrived popped open before. One time it was just one, but there was a time where both were open and thankfully I always put both locks on. By contrast, the Pelican is sturdy enough to stand on and use as a step stool with virtually no flex. The latches are much easier to use and more secure, and Pelican also warranties their cases for life. The bottom line here is if you intend to use it daily or fly with it at all then just upgrade to the pelican. If you just need a waterproof case for something or you're using it to transport stuff in your car then it should do fine but don't expect it to last nearly as long as the Pelican under severe duty.
The Harbor Freight Apache is outstanding for the price

I purchased a Flambeau pistol case from Dick's and if I hadn't already cut out the configuration for my pistol, I would have returned it after going to Harbor Freight and seeing these. For those that haven't seen and handled these, believe me when I say that are outstanding. Just my opinion.
For what they cost there awesome . No there not Pelican cases , but they make great saddlebags for your scooter .

with the apache case valve.. if you are on a plane do you have to manually adjust the pressure? AND IF you don't adjust it could your gear get damaged? im specifically talking about camera, filming stuff..
My Apache works great for my knife collection and if you really like the foam inserts on the pelicans you can buy them for cheap

Please note that the Apache cases are only IP65 rated, while the comparable Pelican cases are rated IP67 and higher. IP65 means it is only protected from low pressure water jets from any direction. IP67 is rated for immersion between 15 centimeters and 1 meter in depth.
This might not be a big deal depending on how you intend to use the case, but keep in mind that all of the Apache cases aren't rated for submersion.

I agree blue cases would be awesome; for me to organize my telco gear. Ive held off from buying more pelican or apache just because of the lack of blue cases in the pelican 1520 and 1550 and apache 3800 & 4800 cases.

I use the 1800 Apache to keep my NOCO car jump starter with the clamps and it works great, better then the case NOCO sell and a lot stronger and cheaper a lot cheaper

How does the plastic shell compare to the Pelican? Pellican has a super thick, tough shell.
Sam's Club sells some under their Member's Mark Brand there's one roughly the same size as the 3800, and there's one a few inches bigger. I just bought one of each for my camera gear for $19 each.
Yeah, I bought a few of those and sold them for a bit more and got mine for free. They are not too bad for under $20.00 it makes you wonder why other companies sell them for $200.00+, I guess it's all about the customfoam.
Pelican cases are better in design and quality over the Apache, that’s why they charge more.

First time using one of these pick and pluck foam cases. On the 3800 I got, though, the foam does not seem to be cut into "cubes" but rather long "columns." Anyone else got their like this or am I misunderstanding how the foam is supposed to work.
I have the 4800. It’s nice but foam is very flimsy.
spray down the foam with a few coats of black flex seal or plastidip after you have it the way you want it. Works great.
Can probably swap out the valve with a pelican one. They look the same size.
Note that not all pelican cases have that two stage latch. Just saying!
A small one for one of my cameras it seems to be pretty good but it's not a pelican but for 20 bucks it'll work
the first pelican case i had (incidentally,still have) has screw in relief valves... i think the patent ran out that's ho apache can get around certain pelican patents.
I have the pelican 1550 is it about the same size as the Apache 3800?
I was just looking at these in the local HF by me. The resistance you felt opening and closing the largest one was apparent in the large one I looked at as well. So either it is a design problem or, maybe, a feature? The resistance does keep the lid from slamming down on your fingers.
What were you going to use them for. If you want a protective case with non-critical equipment. Like life saving equipment, I think they would be fine.
I'm looking at them for my camera equipment and such. I think that they will work out fine as well. In their most recent email flyer they have a coupon for the smallest one, $9.99, I picked that one up for my Lumix point and shoot and will expand to the others later.
On the apache cases isn't there some exposure to hazardous chemicals from the California authority?

Picked up the 3800 for $39 shipped with tax. Not the best deal bur decent. Amazon prime has a condition one case for $46 which has about 1 1/2 inches extra depth.
How do these compare to the Rigid watertight tool boxes from Home Depot? The HD boxes don't have pressure relief valves, but they are watertight. Have you compared them?
paulndot the rigid boxes are not waterproof. The Milwaukee "pack out" boxes are.
Gotcha. I guess I use the term "waterproof" loosely. I didn't mean like dunk in the river...safe from being underwater. Basically, just a case that'll keep the rain out if I get caught in it, and keep the dust out on a trail. Thanks for the reply man - really appreciate it. They do now. It is the Apache 4800. It is about the same size as the Pelican 1550.
If you look up waterproof abs case on Wish you can find something similar for $17. You're still spending too much if the only purpose is for storage, if you travel with it daily or are in the water a lot of the time then spend the money and get a Pelican. If not then buy it from Wish, takes 3 weeks to ship but come on... It's $17.

Haven't showered, got fired from my job for "no-show", my wife left me and I've been living off of old bread and rain water. @@BrentRoberts01 I have one and it is pretty good. Heavier rifles like the 50 BMG will sag the lids and compromise the seal when it is stood upright. However, even in the field, morning dew is not able to sneak in, so it is perfectly usable. I do not think it is worth $120, but it often goes on sale for $100 and then you can add a 20-25% coupon which makes it much more reasonable at $75.
If you are going for use at airports, buy a brand recommended by your airline. Will probably save headaches. If you just want a case for a regular sized rifle, I would just go to Big 5 with the $5 coupon they often send to members and buy yourself a cheapo plastic hard case for $15-20. I only recommend the Apache case if you want to stick like multiple AR uppers and handguns in, or if you have a big rifle like a match barreled rifle, or magnum where the weight or thickness can compromise cheaper cases's protection.

I'd say *yes* if you supply the padlock. Per the TSA: _You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only. Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter. The container must completely secure the firearm from being accessed. Locked cases that can be easily opened are not permitted._

Nike vs Adidas a shoe is a shoe!! Pelican in my opinion is over priced for what it does and quality is pretty on point with the Apache for a lot less dollars. For 80.00 dollars less I have no problem turning a valve or flipping open the latches. Apache is an Indian a Pelican is a bird and based off the bird there flying away with your money and prolly shitting on your window!!!

Yep. A Pelican case is always sealed, you don’t have to think about it. The HF you have to remember to close the screw to make sure it’s water right. If your carrying high end gear I would go with the Pelican.

I would never purchase these cases. They feel really cheap even the foam. I own several pelican cases and just an all around better high quality case.
Pelican is the standard everyone is trying to meet or come close too. But the Apache cases are not a bad second choice. I picked up a Pelican type case off of Amazon for really cheap. Well the case was, cheap, the Apache cases was way better than the Amazon case. So it’s a give and take, price equals quality!

Because this chinese cases cost waaaay less than the pelican cases, which in my opinion are awesome, but these ones aren't that bad for the price.
Apache cases are complete garbage. Made a first aid kit with one and it rained on it and $100 worth of bandages gauze etc was ruined not to mention They do not have a lifetime warrantywith the manufacturer like pelican. I would take a pelican over this piece of shit case anyday. Also the manual pressure relief thing is a joke I turned it to open it and it broke right off. Only thing it beats pelican by is price. If you have high dollar equipment you need to transport pick a pelican hell a cardboard box offers more protection then any apache.
I was afraid of that. That screw they call a relief valve looks flimsy and weak. Did your case get submerged and was the screw closed?
BundysGarage no it just rained and leaked in where the or ring is on the relief valve. At least with pelican cases there pressure relief valve does not need to be open or closed.
