  • Overview and initial image samples from the TTArtisan 100mm f/2.8 2x macro Tilt/Shift lens for mirrorless cameras. Fully manual tilt and shift lens for RF/E/L/Z/X/M43 mounts. All questions welcome...
    A new lens for testing for a detailed review of image quality, usability both as a macro and tilt/shift lens. The lens is also available for EF/F/G mounts, but without the tilt/shift function.
    UPDATE: The tilt/shift version of this lens was discontinued - now Macro only
    I've a longer review [~25mins] of the non tilt/shift version at

    Like your channel. Thank you for the vids. You asked for questions. Here are a few I am curious about, if you don't mind. Is there much light fall off when shifted to the extreme (any or all direction)? What is the best use-case(s) for this lens (macro, close-ups, landscape or other)? How does this lens compare to a wider focal length tilt-shift lens for achieving the toy-like effect of either small (e.g., table top), medium (e.g., people), or large (e.g., cars and buses) objects.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  11 місяців тому +1

      Excellent - I'll be sure to cover these in the review.
      Remember that tilt becomes massively less effective as you get closer, so for Macro it's almost irrelevant. The longer focal length means that even at full tilt, the plane of focus [at ∞] passes some 75cm to the side/above/below the camera.
      For 'toy' effects this lens will be much better suited to more distant objects
      For an example of near this focal length, see the TS-E 90mm 'macro' review at
      www.northlight-images.co.uk/ts-e-90mm-f2-8l-macro-review/
      This has a bit more shift/tilt but the examples will give a good feel for what you can likely get [albeit at a vastly higher price]

    Thanks Keith I was disappointed to hear that there would be hardly any effect in the depth of field at very close quarters, I had seen a video showing that there should be an effect.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  7 місяців тому

      It's a basic function of how lens tilt works - or perhaps doesn't at close distances with the amount of tilt you get in a lens like this.
      Yes, there is a tilt of the focal plane, but it's a lot less than people hope for.
      I showed some examples in my recent review of the Fuji 110mm TS - which has a few degrees more tilt

      Thanks Keith, this is the video I saw, " Can a Tilting Macro Lens give deeper DOF?" AstrHori 85mm Review, the guy seemed to get much better depth of field on the green beetle, maybe it was just the AstrHori ?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  7 місяців тому +1

      The technical answer to "Can a Tilting Macro Lens give deeper DOF" is no ;-)
      Can the slanted plane fit some subjects better and give the impression of a deeper DOF - yes
      Two factors of note - the actual tilt of the plane of focus increases quite a bit as working distance increases - several examples shown are at much less than 1x. An 85mm lens gives a bit more tilt than a 100mm in similar use
      So the results in that video are pretty much what I'd expect to see from that lens.
      I've much more detail in my written articles/reviews than the videos
      See this for a lot more detail

    I like the idea of using the extra length for shift and tilt mechanisms. I'm unsure about this lens, but if there-s a MFT version of an APS-C lens that uses the extra diameter smartly, I could be quite interested. I don't really expect shifty lenses (let's ignore that Samyang lens) designed just for MFT, but this could be a lower cost way to get there.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  11 місяців тому

      Yes, the M43 version is just a different mount - no other changes to this full frame lens.

    I don't have a tilt/shift lens nor have I seen one in real life, but the concept is quite interesting. Almost exclusively, i take wildlife/birds. I'm going to start taking close-up photos and maybe some architecture if I spot some interesting buildings, so t/s is even more on my mind. You mentioned a scenario in which this lens doesn't have enough tilt. Is there a way to figure that out from the tilt specs?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  11 місяців тому

      Close-up and tilt don't generally work well. 100mm for architecture is also a bit long? To me, this seems a good lens for product photography and Macro [to 2x]
      There are ways of telling, but I fear they rely on a lot of experience ;-)
      However... See this detailed written article/review which covers the subject - note that the new TS-E90 has a slightly shorter focal length and 2º less tilt than the TTA100TS, so see the comparison between maximum tilt and close tilt of the focal plane for the original TS-E90

    Hi Keith. Great video. Would there be more vignetting using this lens at full tilt compared to using the gfx 110 tilt shift on the fuji medium format system?
    Thanks

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks
      I'd imagine very definitely so - the lens I tested was RF mount. I don't know what its image circle is like on 33x44 medium format.
      We're talking very different lenses in terms of image coverage [and price!]
      I need to get back to this lens - my testing was disrupted a bit by Epson sending me a huge printer...

      Thanks Keith. So the fuji 110mm tilt shift on the gfx would perform with less vignetting? I ask as I use a gfx 100s and a Sony a7r4, I tried the 110mm tilt shift and it gave me great results shooting 'hero' shots in one image@@KeithCooper

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  6 місяців тому +1

      Yes - the fuji T/S is a superb lens - I've a full review.
      You'll get some level of tilt vignetting with any lens - but the T/S without tilt is just a very fine lens
      My feeling is that unlike the 30mm T/S it has distinct competition in adapted TS-E90/2.8L and TS-E135/4L lenses. In fact at f/4, the TS-E135 might be a more interesting portrait option - then again I'm an architectural and industrial photographer - I rarely do people ;-)

      @@KeithCooper did you get the impression the lens would work adequately? It’s such a great price that I’m considering this for the Sony a7rv, I only really need for hero shots taken from 45 degrees below, something the gf 110mm ts did with ease with the 100s

      @@danwhiteside248 I just had confirmation that this lens is not a current product any more - A future version will not have the tilt/shift
      How much tilt did you need with the 100s ?

    But why would one shift and blur unnaturally across the cactuses and not just let everything in focus in the frame?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  10 місяців тому

      Because sometime you don't want or can't get 'everything in focus'.
      The examples I give are usually at widest aperture, so as to show the effect of tilt - if you are after a larger useful area of sharpness you would likely use a smaller aperture as well, as with a normal lens

    Can it shift enough to make building and line vertical? But is shifting building at lower angle provide natural how the building will looks like if you were able to stand T the middle of the building to take its photo because even if you shift it, the information your lens get is still for lower ground and it's just change the perspective from these lower grounds light informations right?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  10 місяців тому

      In general, the convention is to fully compensate for vertical convergence.
      I don't however fully understand what you have written?

    • @NetvoTV
      @NetvoTV 10 місяців тому +1

      @@KeithCooper sorry I mean, look at the building directly in the middle is different to at the bottom and this shift function is to get the perspective if we look at the building at the middle right? But even if we can shift the lens at the bottom of the building to get the middle pov perspective, the light informations gathered by the lens still is from the bottom of the building and not above at the middle of the building, hence it's not exactly true real life how it going to looks like if you stand at the middle of the building and point toward it and take a picture or video, it is still at the bottom but just changed the perspective, hence it's not real vertical appearance of the building and just altered lower ground pov?

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  10 місяців тому +1

      Yes that can be a problem with wider and closer views.
      One of the skills of architectural photography is dealing with things like this ;-)
      You need to know what your clients are looking for as well as applying your own compositional experience and choice of lenses/viewpoints.
      However I do have a tripod/mast which goes up to 8 metres so I can decide on where I want my 'eye level' situated.

    • @NetvoTV
      @NetvoTV 10 місяців тому

      @@KeithCooper I see but, with that tripod, that shift function still make sense? I do think you can achieve tilt and shift functions with software but I do think there is still places for then like making videos from them as i not sure it eill be possible with software even it do, it won't be full 4K or even 1080p quality but can you make a video to show if this 100mm TTArtisan F2.8 T/S len able to shift enough to make building appear vertical? I haven't find video show it yet.

    • @KeithCooper
      @KeithCooper  10 місяців тому

      The question with the 100mm is can I stand far enough back to get the whole building in. I would not use a longer lens like this for much architectural work.
      Yes, shift is still important - I may use the tripod just to shoot from above the level of people/cars - so only a few metres - I still need shift to get the rest of the building. Shift is often about changing the composition without moving the camera - note that I've not even considered any horizontal shift element, so as to change perceived horizontal perspective
      I do have videos showing the effects of shift
