    I appreciate you doing a review on this lens, as I was curious about its performance. What's even more surprising is the fact that it comes in an M42 screw mount. This is absolutely perfect, with all the vintage M42 lenses I already have in my collection. I'm definitely picking this lens up.

    TTArtisan is quickly becoming my favorite lensmaker, along with Venus optics. Both very innovative, but only TTartisan is budget friendly. I look forward to their future releases, I'm sure they're gonna surprise us more.
    I'd personally like something wide-angle. Like a 10mm f/4 rectilinear lens for apsc.

    Picked up a TTartisan 50mm f/1.4 ASPH in Sony E-mount a few days ago.
    As new, open box deal, £109 delivered.
    It's 99% a Summilux. Put a long hood on it and the few flaws disappear.
    Highly recommended.

    I focus primarily on bokeh in my nature photography. I’ve always wanted a Trioplan but deemed it too expensive, so I’m really happy to learn about this new lens that can give me the results I’m looking for without breaking the bank. Also I bought a vintage lens and while using a closeup filter to get closer to the subject I noticed so much dust. With a new lens I won’t face that problem. Thank you so much for your reviews, appreciate them!

    Great review as always. Good to see some inovative lens manufacturers recreating some of the classic soap bubble Bokeh monsters. So well done to TTArtisan.
    I have one such lens, the Meyer-Optik Görlitz Primotar 135mm f3.5 and it's been great fun.
    The results from your review lens look quite faithful to the classic triplet design. Particularly the image taken looking down the railings in the sun.
    Building a lens with 13 rounded aperature blades and M42 mount has certaily got my attention. Not to mention the attractive price. Every photographer should own at least one M42 lens.

    Thanks for the comprehensive review. My standard walkaround lens on Fujifilm APS-C is a Cooke Ivotal triplet from a 16mm movie camera. I'm excited to have a cost effective option for my Nikon Z6.

  • @otohikoamv
    @otohikoamv 11 місяців тому +9

    This looks like a great lens!
    I'm seriously considering it - though admittedly, the results really remind me of the look I already get from my Jupiter-37A with a focal reducer (which works out to an equivalent of a 105mm f/2.8 lens on a crop sensor), so it may not be a necessary addition for me. Still, for the price especially, this is a solid competitor to vintage lenses. And it's great to see a brand new M42 product in this day and age.

    • @ReinoldFZ
      @ReinoldFZ 11 місяців тому

      Maybe I am reading you incorrectly, but how can a focal reducer in crop turn your Jupiter 37A, which is a 135mm f3.5 lens if I am not wrong, into a 105 mm f2.8?, or do you mean that this TT 100mm f2.8 would be with the focal reducer a 105mm f2.8?

    • @otohikoamv
      @otohikoamv 11 місяців тому

      @@ReinoldFZ A focal doesn't entirely "turn" a lens into something else per se, but by focusing the same amount light on a smaller image circle, it basically "shortens" the focal length of the lens. A 1.3x reducer on a 135mm Jupiter-37A works out to just under 104mm (these numbers are usually rounded anyway, so it still falls within the 105mm range), while the aperture width remains the same, so you end up with a ratio of 2.7:1 which is close enough to the nearest f-stop of 2.8.
      As long as you're working with a sensor that is smaller than the resulting image circle (which APS-C definitely is), it's near enough to using a shorter lens with the same aperture size. It's not perfect, and will vary from lens to lens, and some are awful with reducers (e.g. the same reducer with my Helios 40-2 completely trashes the image quality). It's worked really well for me with the Jupiter-37A though - I only lose a little corner sharpness, but actually gain some center sharpness that way. And I do enjoy the look of the resulting bokeh etc.
      I suspect this TTArtisan lens or many other 100 to 105mm f/2.8 lenses are better choices overall, but I was just thinking that the images I get from my "reduced" Jupiter-37A on Sony APS-C cameras are actually really similar in many qualities. It's also worth pointing out that one of the selling points of this TTArtisan lens is that it has a huge image circle (almost MF-sized), whereas a full-frame lens like my Jupiter with a reducer will usually cover barely more than a crop sensor. So, I'm not making a direct comparison - just observing that some of my results with what I have are remarkably similar, that's all!

    I love that this is something TTArtisan is making. Good clean new-make “vintage” lenses is a fascinating niche, and I can only hope that some Biotar designs are coming down the pike. A classic 58/2 would be fantastic, but something like a 40mm f/1.5 for APS-C would really be special.
    That said, I’m hesitant here. I mostly shoot APS-C (and 135 only on film) where 100mm is perhaps a little long of a focal length. If this was somewhere between 70 and 85mm, it’d still be quite usable as a FF portrait lens, and much more versatile on APS-C. But this is a nice price, and with a cheap M42 -> K adapter I could put this on either my Fuji, or film or digital Pentax.
    One last thought: I hope some of the vintage optical designs show up on TTArtisan’s AF lenses. Getting full modern conveniences with old-school glass could be a great niche. Their 27/2.8 feels a lot like an adapted vintage wide angle, with the strong cat’s eye and vignette. How wild would it be to have something like an AF 70/2.8 triplet lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras?

    I’d guess from what I recall of your review of the Orestor that broadly the Orestor is more sharp, while the TT Artisan is capable of much more bokeh?

    It's great to see a resurgence of newly made "vintage" lenses. Instead of competing head-to-head with brand lenses that are demonstrably "superior" to the lower budget lenses, a company like ttartisans can simply reformulate an older lens at a lower cost than the orginal, allowing more people to experience the joys of vintage lens photography. The fact that this lens is offered in an M42 mount (something other reviewers don't understand), shows that the lower budget lens makers have found a solid niche that they're planning to continue to exploit. Good for them. And us.

    Simon, I really enjoy your reviews but I have a question - I shoot with old film era Minolta lenses (both Minolta prime and Sigma zoom off a Minolta 303b) plus M42 mount lenses. I shoot a mirrorless camera - Fuji XH1 and XH2. with K&F adapters. I got thinking with the adapter (even more so with your K1) the lens is farther away from the sensor than it would have been with a film camera, do you use adapter rings which are very shallow or does it make little of no difference?

    • @Simonsutak
      @Simonsutak  10 місяців тому

      This is a great question! When I use my M42 lenses on a Pentax camera the fit is tight/ shallow to the body. When I use my M42 lenses on a Sony body, the adapter is a couple of cms or more out from the body. But then inside the Pentax sensor or the film is set back inside the body; a lot more than the Sony, hence part of the difference. One major exception is Nikon DSLRs that require an adapter with glass to compensate and achieve infinity. I’ll do some tests and see if the MFD and other lengths are exactly the same across my Pentaxs and Sonys.

    how do extension tubes affect the soap bubble bokeh if shot wide open?

    • @Simonsutak
      @Simonsutak  7 місяців тому

      If you add extension tubes and get closer to your object in focus then the bubbles will be bigger. There is a point where the bubbles are so big that it impacts the overall look of smaller soap bubbles. Hope this helps.

    Wonderful review by the best person to do so. One question on the adapter. I have never seen a Laina adapter, but the finish looks nice. I have read the lens tends to mount a bit off center and TTArtisans recommends an adapter that allows center line adjustment. Was that the case for your adapter and are these adapters easy to find? I am leaning towards a macro adapter that provides extension as you have shown the lens behaves nicely on extension but Vello or FotodioX macro adapters do not allow the center line to be adjusted and they don't look that well made.

    • @Simonsutak
      @Simonsutak  10 місяців тому +1

      Many thanks for your kind words and question. It's interesting to read on TTArtisan's website, above TTArtisan's recommendation about the adapter with center line adjustment, that "It is a normal phenomenon that the centerline of thread mount lens is not aligned with the centerline of the camera, and it does not affect the use."
      Personally, I found that the lens I used for the shots in this video did align OK with the centerline. It aligned on all the adapters I tried: as well as the one in the video, I also used Pentax M42 adapters to a Pentax DSLR a different M42 to Sony e-mount adapter, and extension tubes . I also tried the lens on M42 film cameras - two different makes of film camera - a Pentax and a Zenit, and it aligned OK.
      The problem isn't where the centerline is not perfectly aligned - I have a number of M42 lenses on adapters where this happens - but where the centerline is so far off because of the way the lens screws into the adapter, that a lens (any lens of any make) cannot focus to infinity. If that happens with a TTArtisan then you should send it back and ask for one that does align for infinity.

      @@Simonsutak The lens I recieved was 180 degrees off center - the lens engravings are on the bottom. Way outside the picture and description of the centerline error that is shown in their publicity - approx' 30 degrees. Of course this can be accomdated by using an adapter with centerline adjustment, but that means adjusting the adapter every time you swap to a different M42 lens. So I have a dedicated adapter for just this lens now. And it is completely impractical to use on any M42 mount camera body as the lens is upside down. Given modern manufacturing methods it really is poor that they can't index the mounting thread to the correct position on the lens, every one of nearly 150 M42 lenses that I have has the centerline bang on the top, which matched every single mount on every one of the 30 or so camera bodies I have.
      To be fair TT Artisan resolved my dissapointment and I still have the lens . It's a lens I bought because I wanted it, it's the first brand new lens I've bought in maybe 15 years and I like it a lot. It is a very well made lens that is optically excellent, but sadly it is let down by a simple engineering production issue.
