  • Sharing our first month raising St. Croix sheep on the Homestead as beginner sheep farmers. We picked our sheep up from Greg Judy at the end of August and are happy to say we still have all 12 of our sheep and our livestock guardian dog here on the property. Not only are they here but they are doing great. In this video, we show you our setup for the sheep.

    Your video was great about your adventures on the homestead. I was reared tending sheep in the Appalachian Mountains and learned they have many interesting characteristics. God bless you and your family!

      Thank you for watching our video! Our perimeter fence is 5 strand barbed wire around our 45 acres. Where the sheep run, their perimeter is the 3 strands of electric wire. Not a single one has tried to escape.

      Greg Judy doesn’t grain feed his sheep as grain grows hooves which will then need trimming.
      Will those pellets you feed them do g the he same

    • @OurFruitfulFamily
      @OurFruitfulFamily  2 роки тому +1

      @@elizabethkernohan2263 you are correct, he doesn’t feed his sheep grain. Neither do we. These pellets are Alfalfa grass pellets. And we rarely feed it to them. We bring it out as a treat every now and again just to get them used to being around us. It’s just a different flavor grass than they are used to do it’s a treat to them.

      How To Train Your Sheep To Come To You

  • @maryfrancesc714
    @maryfrancesc714 2 роки тому +1

    Where are you located? I really think this might be for me. At first I can only start small as I have 3 different 2 acre plots. Maybe 6. I want to make sure my first plot is sufficient I know there are lots of brambles and blackberry bushes but don’t know what grasses. What would you suggest I plant. When I’m ready could you tell me if I can buy from you?

    • @OurFruitfulFamily
      @OurFruitfulFamily  2 роки тому +2

      We are located in Arkansas! Northwest Arkansas to be more specific. As for acreage, if it is acreage that the sheep will eat, you can have approximately 10 sheep per acre. As for the blackberry brambles, sheep and goats eat them. They actually like them quite a bit. I would probably put them on that land and let them have at it. As far as grass, they are not too picky to be quite honest. Whatever grasses grow easiest in your area they will more than likely eat. As far as buying them from our homestead, that depends on how far down the road you are talking. We are still in the process of building our flock so we will not be selling any ewes for quite a while.

      @@OurFruitfulFamily thank you so much. You are amazing!! I’m in NC so that would be difficult. I’ll see if I can find a more local breeder. Thank you again!!

    • @OurFruitfulFamily
      @OurFruitfulFamily  2 роки тому

      @@maryfrancesc714 That is one heck of a drive! I will say though to find pure bred St. Croix sheep, you will more than likely have a little bit of a drive. They are harder to come by than you might think. If you are OK with any random breed of sheep, that’ll be a whole lot easier for you to come by locally more than likely. Thank you so much for the sweet compliment! We just released another video today Relating to sheep! You should check it out! I think you would enjoy it! More learning opportunities! God bless you and thank you for watching our videos! Let me know if you have any more questions!

    • @OurFruitfulFamily
      @OurFruitfulFamily  2 роки тому +3

      Hahahahhaha you are cracking me up! As for minerals, I’ve yet to put anything because I am going to be building a mineral feeder more than likely but you can even use blocks as long as they are recommended for sheep. Sheep don’t use the same mineral blocks as cattle.
