Triumph Tiger 800 XC and Tiger Explorer 1200 Review: Cat Video

- The Tiger 800 XC and Tiger Explorer 1200 are a direct attack on BMW's F800GS Siegfried and R1200GS Roy, but the Triumphs are well capable of standing on their own merits. That raises another question, which big cat to take home? OneWheelDrive.Net puts the two Tigers to the test to find out, in our take on that standard internet meme - the cat video.

Just found you guys, loved the review. Subscribed
Just bought a 800xc yesterday! can't wait for it to arrive in 2 weeks! you review is one of the reasons i wanted one!
One of the best bike reviews I've EVER seen!
Thank you for this OFF-ROAD review! I've had my 2012 800 XC for about 6 mos and am planning a 3400 miles trip around the Western United States. All videos, for research, that I've come across(including Triumph's own website) gives jack for any off-roading review or capability. Especially for the Explorer. I'm looking at up-grading to that one for this trip. I love my 800 XC, but I test rode the Explorer yesterday and I must say, what a bike! Even if I don't upgrade I will still be super happy.
This is the best review on the new tiger out there. good job man.
As always - fantastic review! I can't wait until the next review... I have an 800GS myself, not going to replace it, but if I were buying a new bike now I'd seriously consider the XC as well. Cheers from South Africa
Enjoyed the review. Was torn between the two but this really helped steer be towards the 800. Looks like loads of fun.
Ran a 1200 GS and a 1200 Explorer on my Tiger 800. Rolling start at 30mph to 115mph. I stayed within one length at 115mph. Not worth worrying about. And with the weight difference, greater "flickability" and better mpg, the 800 is the better machine. In my humble opinion, of course!
I have an orange 2012 800 xc. From nyc to Colorado 4.300 miles round trip, between gs 1200, explorer 1200, yam teneré 1200, and everybody felt in love with the first generation xc. 22.000 miles on it and just oil changes and gas. That's it.
As always, one of the best channels with motorcycle content.. reviews or nutcase ramblings!
I absolutely love my tiger 800 xc which might be why I love this review, either way bias or un-bias, really great job gentlemen. One of the best reviews I have seen, it's a shame you all don't make content any more. Subbed anyway just in case lol.
Great review guys. Really appreciated with a touch of humour.
Brilliant review and comparison, the best i have seen to date. I have been looking at both for long distance touring with both black top and dirt roads and i was looking at the 800 but now i'm very interested in the 1200 and will have to go and try one now. Thanks for not beating around the bush as well and calling it as you see it. Very much appreciated .
One of the best vehicle reviews that I have seen.
Thanks for a great review - topical, concise and informative. I have been giving a lot of thought to these bikes in comparison to others and you've swung it for me.
Now to find a dealer in Chile! :)
Excellent review! Very informative!
Awesome review Neil ! Love the quirky humor bits, especially the squinty-eyed BMW face. I moved from a Yamaha Raider to a TIger 800 XC last week in part thanks to reviews like yours. I'm no Bubba Stewart, but having fun on dirt roads (where no cruiser would dare venture). I've owned 4 yamaha's but I went with Tiger 800 over Super tenere cuz it just "felt right" !. (even in America, bigger is not always better) thanks again !
Awesome review as always. Keep it up.
I do believe that you give the best motorcycle reviews on youtube. If you review the new Honda 500 series I will love you forever!
Great review, I was torn between both bikes but finally opted for the 1215 xc. Two weeks camping kit and sometimes two up swung it for me. But I did test ride both bikes and loved them.
Did you like both bikes the same? I have a Vstrom 650 and was thinking about the 1215 but...? I want to do a lot of street riding out west and wanted something more powerful!
Really a great review! keep it up!
what a great review. thanks for putting it up here
A good balanced review. I've just bought an 800 XC and it does everything it should plus a bit more. Tour, light trail or fun road trips it has it all. If Steve McQueen was around today, he'd more likely be on this rather than the bonnie.
Just bought an 800XC but have not had a chance to ride off road yet. I have been surprised by the on-road performance, though. There is a much smaller fun differential between it and my Ducati than I thought and I am really enjoying riding it. I put some Caribou cases with Hepco Becker racks on it and they seem rock-solid (the dealer couldn't GIVE me the Triumph cases...and they offered!).
I though I would keep the Ducati, but am having second thoughts. It's just not that much more fun.
Love the humor. Good review.
really good review. im glad i found you. am subscribing now.
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for the complement.
Interesting review, great scenery, mud-plugging. But hey, you missed some wordplay - what about 'clawing their way up the mountain', or 'falling off is not a cat-astrophe'? Anyway, I liked the 'tall engine wearing the fuel tank as a hat' -that's very nice indeed. Where's the electric motor/regen braking in the front hub though?! Cars are way ahead, and I am dying to see a two-wheel drive bike - you? Darn, then there's your whole channel name to reconsider...!
Very nicely done, comprehensive and real world. Thank you.
Love you reviews, thanks
Really great review
After my 400DRZ is paid off. I will be getting the 2014 800 XC "SE" I was looking at the BMW 800 GS until I went to the Triumph dealership to get some parts for a tune on my DRZ...
would love to see you do a comparo between the 800xc and the F800GS/GSA - or even a review of the F800GSA and your thoughts on the differences with the 800XC.
excellent review
"Bendy specials..." I love it!
An excellent review and comparison. I just put a deposit down on the 1200 XC. This will be more suited for my longer distances on the Tarmac loaded up with occasional gravel type off roads. I think both bikes have their strengths and weaknesses. Both have great character and are great and for your buck compared with the competition.
A big thing that is rarely mentioned is the Tiger 1200 is a pretty big bike. If you are 5' 9" and under, and less than, say 175Lbs this bike is way too big for you. The 1200 XC for a guy my size (6' 2" 250Lbs) it a toy that I can throw around in the dirt, on the road...anywhere. I see very small men reviewing the bike complaining about the bike saying its too big too ride off-road. To this I say: "stick to a bike suited for your size, don't give an opinion on a bike that you have no business riding in the first place. Review an 800,or smaller cause that is a suitable bike for you."
OneWheelDrive is the first guy I've seen on here capable of riding the 1200 and having a valid opinion on it. Thanks for that!
Same thing with bikes like the Super Tenere. That there is a fat lady..............
John Michael bingo.
Great review. Is that area outside of Vancouver (eh?)
great video!! keep it up!!
My god..The cat puns just kept coming. My buddy has an 800XC, and after some old lady plowed it over in a parking lot, he went out and got another brand new one. That's about as high praise of a bike as I can think of.
Great review! I agree with a lot of what you say. I know both bikes quite well. Rode the Explorer through Morocco last spring for 10 days (won the contest!) and bought a 800XC last summer. Explorer is great but the 800XC is definitely more fun. I
Great video!! They are both great bikes but I'm having trouble with the price. I really want a bigger shaft drive.
Don't know a millimeter from a gas meter but you do give good review!
I enjoyed your Alaska and Baja trips. Will you be doing any new rides/tours?
Unfortunately, we can't speak to the reliability long term as we only had the bikes for a month to film. BMW is solid, and now has a great warranty. I'm not familiar with the Triumph warranty, but the bikes are well and conservatively engineered in my opinion.
I generally slot the MTS 1200 S under sport-touring, and at that it's one of the best in the class.
It's really quite quite good. If you're more on the dirt side of things, you might want a little more ground clearance, but it's got tons more than the DL650.
....very good journalist. Nice review!
The BMW R1200RT is a sport-touring "street" bike and is NOT designed for off-road use, such as the R12GS. The RT should NOT be mentioned in this review.
GUYS, FANTASTIC VIDEO REVIEW!! GREAT LOVELY MACHINES!! TIGER 800 XC LOOKS LIKE THE ONE I WOULD CHOOSE FOR A BIG MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURE TRIP ;) ;)
great video. loved the reviews.
do these kitty cats require any special maintenance? such as cans of tuna, raw meat or cat nip?
i thinking about adopting the 800XC....and him mr. bigglesworth.
LOVE this video.
And my 800 XC.
Both BMW and Triumph have a great presence here in my city (Barcelona). Both staff are very profesional and friendly. The GS has a 10000km service gap, the Triumph 15000km. The Triumph is also cheaper and more well equipped.
Neil, you need to make more videos...very entertaining and informative. I'm thinking of getting a second bike (can't talk myself into selling my MT-01), and I think the 800 is a perfect size engine class...Goldie Locks if you will...
Anyway, thanks for the great video.
Later.
The 800 XC has a flaw with the passenger rear sets. A buddy of mine low sided his on a gravel rd and broke the rear set right off. The 800 does not have a rear sub-frame so the bike was basically totaled.
Once again man great video .... Loved the 800 ... If u were to own one of these which one would it be ?? Really ?? Lol
excellent! reminds me how happy i feel to have the lighter f800gs and not the bulky 1200 adv... hats off to triumph for making such refined bikes in this category... too bad 800xc wasnt out back in early 2009, surely i would have test driven too...
Great review, I've been lusting after a tiger
Best Tiger review out there, and believe me, I watched them all. I still have my doubts about picking a flavor however. My major concern in picking 800xc over 1200 is two-up performance. What`s fellow UA-camrs` take on 800xc with pillion and baggage?
Good review although I am still unsure which bike to go for lol
I'm 6"2', the air flow on the Explorer 1200 with the windscreen in the up-most position was really good. I generally use the Icon Variant, which is a beaked helmet, and there was only minimal buffeting. WAY BETTER than the Multi! I can't speak to the new R1200GS though.
"OMG, Its a BMW without those squinty looking headlights". BOL. I'm picking up a squinty F700GS soon.
I cam away really impressed with the Tiger 800 XC. My only big issue is that I would like to have seem more ground clearance. I took it though a very challenging rock garden following a friend on a KTM 690 Enduro R and got high centred. That said it was a mid-sized adventure bike out riding with an enduro, so well outside its comfort zone.
Finally an offering of a decent 800 to consider replacing my '07 DL1000 ! Unless Suzuki actually follows through with the 2014 concept of course.
What's that helmet the 800 rider is wearing, the ds with a gold back? Excellent video by the way, thinking about picking up an 800. 0.0
I really love this bikes and hope to buy one. But i wish they could provide COMBINED ABS for more safety in emergency.
agreed. The ducati is a great bike for street touring, but certainly not what you want to be using on all terrains.
The 2014 DL-Big? Word is Suzuki is indeed heading down that path. Though insiders are saying there will still be no option for spoked-rims.
Nice video!
That is the Icon Variant Battlescar.
Great job!
Too bad Triumph didn't fit the 800 w/ tubeless spoke wheels.I would hate to have to change a tube on the trail. They should offer tubeless as an option on the 800.Other than that, The Triumph[s] have that sweet 3cyl motor!
Really, tough call. I'd be split between the Explorer XC and R1200GS. So would recommend looking at the areas where you are traveling, and comparing that to the dealer support in those areas should anything go wrong. I'd also talk to your local dealers to determine the cost of ownership for both bikes over the long term. Once those are elements are factored into your choice, maybe that will help?
Then go with the one that makes your heart sing just a little more ;)
thanks, the plans are to take it to the south of France this summer, but first i'm gonna put some kilometers on it
I wish you people could get your hands on xt660z tenere, is it still unavailable in Canada?
I think if you try the new F8 with a seat like I got made from SLIM aka Janice in Vancouver you might notice a whole new bike with the ESA...look forward to your review because we rode the Tigers for 44 days and thought they were a great bike....BMW got some things right with the '13 version and we are quite happy with our decision especially with the lean look and tank under the seat.
RE the ABS, yep, activation/deactivation is a pain in the ass. that said you can be quite aggressive with front wheel braking with it on, before it kicks in.
Nope, BMW hasn't shut the door. We're working on landing a 2013 F800GS for review, but these things take time.
Off road most definitely! The Baja is amazing territory for riding either sport or dirt though.
I'm at 30,000 miles on my XC and its been awesome.
Take a look at the awesomerider videos. They are based in the UK and are doing a lot of offroad stuff.
What's the road dirt split in % for the 800? it looks more road orientated!
Frikin great review by the way.
Perfect and funny review ;)
We are plotting a return to the Baja in Spring of 2013. Smaller bikes this time ;)
I wanted the 1200 xc , I really did, until I started seeing all the blown 1200 engines, quite common still, several before 10,000 mi. sad really, hope they fix it.
If I remember correctly you're relatively tall. How did you find the wind protection/buffeting on the tiger 1200? Both of the r1200gs and multistrada 1200 give me an excessive amount of wind buffet that becomes a colossal annoyance after an hour on the interstate.
Good choice of bike. Let us know how it treat you? What's the first adventure?
Something tells me this guy went to private school.
Oil Change Style service every 6,000 mi/10,000km
Major Service (Valves, Oil, Plugs) @ 12,000 mi/ 20,000km and 24,000mi/40,000km
You can download the manual at the Triumph Website, it has a full service schedule in it.
Nice review. I'd like to sell my 1150 GSA and move to a 800XC. I hope they are more reliable then the BMW stuff.
Oh they are.
well this video made it. i am going to buy one tomorrow instead of modifying my cb500x with the rally raid stage 3.
I'm 6'4, 250 lbs and to tall for sport bikes at a comfortable feel. I want a Bike I can take camping and travel day to day on. what would you suggest?
look at how much those bags flop around though....
nice one - it's made me decide to buy one..... £5k cheaper than a GS1200 so I can keep my Fireblade too!
I love Blades, oldskool 96/98 excite me more than my misses.
ICON VARIANT one of the best Helmets
Yesterday I tried the Explorer 1200 (not the XC), and today the new air cooled R1200GS. In my opinion, I can't decide wich one is better. I also tried the Super Teneré, and I also liked it. I plan to do road trips (75% of the time) and some light/medium off road. What bike would you choose? Explorer XC, GS1200 or the Super Teneré?
Hugo Brás Da Costa KTM 1290 Super Adventure R
Small back country bikes or road bikes...?
Fantastic review sir, I look forward to more in the near future. This is one of the bikes (800XC) I would love to have in addition to my DR650. One day when finances allow!!
As an aside, how do you rate the Icon Variant Construct you were wearing?
I'm talking hwy miles, 800 vs 1200, is there any advantages between the two bikes on the hwy.
1200 wins on mile and km eating hands down. 800 consumes a bit less fuel if that's a consideration.
The 800 should be consider as medium size not to compare with the Big Guys,I do agree that all the big guys trying to match the benchmark that the reputed GS established. They all great machines, end it all will end with the way the appeal to you, & how deep your hand can reach into your pocket, it's been mentioned that the Dealer Network is very impotent, as well, I'm planing a long trip from SoCal to Argentina, Triumph is offering a very little support over there Vs BMW & Yamaha or Suzuki
Sure but the Triumph service is more expensive than the BMW service since the engine is more complicated. Talking about the 8GS and 8XC here.
10k service on my GS is 100€
10k service on my brothers XC is 180€
20k service on GS is 190€
20k service on XC 330€
30k service on GS is 150€
30k service on the tiger 260€
Even saw some guys paying more than 600€ their service on the Tiger.
The new LC engine is even easier to service than the old one. I'm expecting the same result.
Why?
In an endless pool of boring, specification vomiting reviews - from both the little guy and big magazines..
Why can't you make more (recent) videos and show them how to make a review that's interesting, funny and yet still provides the need to know stuff? Don't the other guys know that the public has already looked up the basics of a bike before watching a review and doesn't want a boring read of the spec sheet? It's no wonder Top Gear is the greatest car program of all time by far and wide and anything else is like watching a bad infomercial.
Keep up the great work and hopefully we'll see some new ones soon!
Does the camera really have to flash back to him every single time he talks? It's like you're trying to watch the bike and see what it does and then it's interrupted by this goofy guy and his weird facial expressions ever 30seconds.
Yes, most of these are just selfie-videos and music videos... So sad. Only a few are different. They (who concentrate on machines and do not show their face) seem to be quite popular!
