    Bonus Tip: a Mac can recognise an iPad as an "analog" input. All you need is a standard USB cable to connect it to the Mac and to enable it in Audio MIDI Setup on your Mac. Then anything played or played back in the iPad will be recorded in Logic as audio. Say you have an instrument only on your iPad and external to Logic Remote, you can record it as audio in Logic just like you record a guitar or a vocal so to say. THAT is a sick feature!

      My iPad syncs via WIFI connection and provides a great controller, I am just now starting my home studio ( been about a year now) without any controller. This is absolutely amazing and very helpful. I find myself composing music in a sense of I don't have to feel limited. Well played Apple!

    What's also amazing with the app is that you can plug in an external midi device into the ipad using a lighting to usb adaptor and it will automatically send the midi data to logic, so it becomes a wireless midi interface!

    Apple should build a hardware controller😎 that would be awesome thx for the vid mate

    • @hipskind
      @hipskind 3 роки тому +4

      That would be super slick, although it seems very much in Apple's character to employ a more blank-slate touchscreen surface like an iPad than some sort of hardware controller with buttons and knobs. The iPad app can be redesigned to fit the current workflow and more easily adjusted to major changes like the addition of Live Loops.

      Ehhh. Knowing Apple, if they made a standalone hardware controller, they’d cripple the logic controller to necessitate its purchase. I’m just siked that the logic iPad controller is as high-functioning as it is.

    ive said it for the longest time. Ever since I discovered the power of logic remote ive been floored. I bought some older iPads and minis and have them set up in different places of the studio. one in the mic room, one at the desk, and iPhone for transport control. amazingly powerful solution custom made for logic. and by the way, now having "sidecar" we CAN get those icons onto an iPad :).

    Literally yesterday I was about to purchase a Komplete Kontrol KS2 controller - the idea of real time adjusting knobs and such (rather than using a mouse/keyboard) really turned me on... Chris, I'm so glad I saw this video today - I was just about to throw away $700 on their system ... I'd much rather spend half that on an iPad that looks like it's even more useful... I've got plenty of midi keyboards... seems like the ipad is a perfect solution. THANKS! (I subscribed)

    This video is JUST what I needed. I moved from Logic to Ableton as my primary driver a couple years ago because I also needed the Live mode. Now that Logic 10.5 has taken on this same functionality in a easier to understand and read way, I wanted to make the move backs. I had dragged my feet though because I had learned and have been using the Push 2 for Ableton which is simply amazing and perhaps the most tightly integrated MIDI controller I have ever seen. I had used Logic Remote years ago but because the lack of tactile response didn’t use it to its potential. Now that the app has grown so much and you can buy larger iPads now I finally sold my Push 2 and purchased a new iPad AND the Novation Launchpad X for nearly half the price so I have a balance of tactile response and functionality. Your video showed me the potential of the App and the most important part of creating is not having to waste time and energy guessing on knobs or buttons or having to jump between the laptop and the interface you are using to write and create with. Thank you, cheers

    One very good think wad the speed dial on novation nocturn and nocturn keyboard. The knob was controlling any parameter where the pointer of your mouse was. No need to midi learn or anything like that. Just point the virtual knob if your plug-in, turn the physical knob and that was it. Although there were 8 other knobs in the controller, I only used that one (and it was infinite and touch sensitive).
    It's a shame automap stopped working though.

    Everything you said about searching for the right controller but falling back to using a mouse and keyboard, hesitation to use a tablet, etc. - it all resonated with me. I looked at the PreSonus FaderPort, and then turned my attention to the Behringer X-Touch, but I'm really reticent about buying a device that might just end up going unused. I like the idea of a physical controller, but you can't compete with the tight, dynamic integration of an iPad with Logic. I've never really been skittish about using the virtual interface with a mouse. Maybe an iPad is the right choice for me, too.

    Touch latency and the overall feel of this is a deal breaker for me. I see potential with this during the raw creative process but not so much when dealing with larger projects or mixing jobs. Accidentally moving faders when trying to scroll left and right is mind bogglingly frustrating. One good physical fader I can map on any cheap dinky midi keyboard is all I need. Thanks for the great video that shows both pros and cons.

    Well, I appreciate the review - very well done, thanks! I've LPX and Logic Remote on an iPad Pro (so very responsive and "alive") and it's true that you can do many many things instead of clicking, but you know what..? I'm still in front of a computer because it's a touch sensitive surface, after a while I miss knobs and buttons. To me, these things will be amazing when I'll have (again like in the golden era of big recording studios) a series of physical object waiting from me to move them, objects talking today with a computer. This would be the goal. Like someone already wrote here: Apple should build an hardware control, who other than Apple building the best hardware control for LPX?!?! I'd pay a lot for it - and no, I'm not a fanboy:)

  • @Taka_Takata
    @Taka_Takata 2 роки тому +1

    I agree with everything you say, but some of us have been (and still are) going through the "song and dance" because we're SICK OF TOUCHSCREENS. That sucks, but I'm thinking of scratching off all the labels on my Faderport 16 and replacing them with the proper Logic-related names from Mackie Control. As to the tactile experience, touchscreen is almost tolerable for faders and buttons, but rotary controls? no way! And of course for people with even a bit of experience in piano playing, all the on-screen gimmicks in the world will never replace a 49 or even 88 keys hardware keyboard. Try hitting bass and treble notes or chords simultaneously on the iPad remote: octave up-down, scaling, sliding, splitting or anything else won't cut it.
    Having just switched back to Mac and Logic after years of suffering through other DAWs, I'm wondering if macOS does work with big-size, third-party touch monitors, the way Windows works with any program? I guess not, they'd rather sell more iPads... And why don't they make any standalone touch displays? Maybe they're planning something around the $30'000 mark?
    As many have said, Apple should build a fully tactile, hardware, non-touchscreen Logic dedicated controller, with transport, buttons, faders, rotaries, XY and smart function/mode/context switching, where you use mostly your ears and hands to make music. Of course Logic on the monitor(s) should follow your hands' work in every way (or not: a Screen Sync ON/OFF button would be needed too).
    I just saw something about a new SSL control surface and will check it out: the search never ends.

    I run Presonus Studio One Artist on a Late 2012 Mac Mini. I play guitar & keyboards. Constantly having to get up, run to the desk to make adjustments, resets, especially with a guitar strapped around my neck is really frustrating. Studio One has a add on Remote Control feature I think for $10.00, runs on the Mac Mini. I got lucky and got the latest iPad on sale $239.00 plus tax (32 GB), all I wanted it for is running this Studio One Remote App (free). What a pleasure! I can sit at the Keyboard, or with a guitar, start and stop my sessions, make adjustments. It's the way to go.

  • @bmsmusician

    I’d love for the remote to be more dynamic in mix view how it uses the iPads screen and more closely mirror the session. For example: the number of plugin slots on the remote is 9 including the EQ even if I don’t have any plugins open in the session. It is a waste of screen space in the iPad where I could see other parameters instead such as sends and/or pan and volume. Same thing with sends - there are four empty slots in the remote even if there none active in the session. I have a feeling that I’d be able to the the whole channel strip if things were scaled down.

    I’m no keyboardist by any stretch, but I am a percussionist/finger drummer, so that tactile feel is absolutely paramount to my experience as a MacOS/iOS producer. That said, I had only used LR fir transport, light mixing and tracking vocals from the booth. This vid helped to shine a light on how LR can be and do more for me in Logic. Granted, it has the look and feel of GarageBand, but I’m used to that by now, so this really ain’t as huge a stretch as I thought it’d be. Thanx, Chris (sp)!

    I'm visually impaired, and I do a lot of zooming all the way in to poke around the Logic interface. I love Logic Remote but have an extra reason to want physical controls, too. So I bought a Behringer X-Touch.
    It's less slick than many others, but costs half as much. Unfortunately, as you describe, it never really worked well. After a needlessly complicated firmware update, it still behaves mysteriously, and most often simply becomes unresponsive in the middle of a session and needs to be restarted.
    Then I thought the Softube offerings looked good, but that seems to require inserting one of their plugins on every channel to use it at all, and the second review I saw demonstrated some seriously glitchy software.
    There's gotta be something.
    Anyhow, I admire your channel, I've used logic since 2007 and still forget simple key commands sometimes. The stuff you demonstrate in these videos blows my mind half the time.

    • @mrufino1
      @mrufino1 3 роки тому +1

      I don’t have any issue with glitchy software using the softube console 1, it works really well in logic.
      My x-touch does have that “reset in the middle of the session” thing sometimes, that can be a pain. I use it with my x32 though, so any computer work with it is a bonus. Of course, very few live sound gigs during the pandemic means the x-touch is primarily getting used as a daw controller.

When I first bought my imac a year ago, a friend gave me a license for Ableton live 9 suite. So I ordered the editor keys Ableton keyboard instead of the magic keyboard. Well, after a week or two I had the $ to buy logic! I learned on an ipad air 2 in GarageBand, so logic was just the perfect next step. So I’ve been stuck with a keyboard which shows Ableton shortcuts in logic. So using logic remote for the keyboard shortcuts works perfectly!!

    Thank you. I’m retired, had all my gear put away for a couple years, but my gear keeps calling to me so I’ve been setting up my spare room as a studio. I live alone with my chihuahua so if I wanna play at 3am I can. I don’t have a lot of money to buy new gear. I have a 2011 iMac quad core i5 which works well with the version of Logic Pro x that I have. Sadly I saw the latest fermion of Logic Pro 10.7 I believe, but. Sadly my 2011 iMac which originally was like 2k I can’t even install the latest os. I happen to have an iPad Pro gen 1 the 12” screen. I did install the remote but when I first looked at it I said cool it’s got faders. I had no idea it had so much function. So I’m hoping that you get the big to deep dive Logic remote and Logic pro x . But if you don’t you’ve convinced me to give it a chance. I’m a guitar player who like you can play keys with 1 hand. I know where the notes are just never took lessons to actually learn to play more than chords. I’m 67 but in hs back in 1972 I had a georhous girlfriend with a beautiful chest and hair down to her waist. Don’t worry back then at least with me sex before a drivers license or graduation was verboten lol sadly but could she play fir Elise ! Amazing. And she had short but fast little fingers! So I purchased last year a Novation Impulse 49 keys. 2 of the keys don’t work, but if I can fin spare parts I can fix that. They have a program auto something 4.4 but so far on Novation web site can’t find it. I did find instructions how to use the 9 faders and also pan knobs and some buttons. Plus it has the play record etc buttons. But that’s pretty basic. If your discovery of the Logic remote is as good as it looks, I still think I’ll leave the keyboard and control surface plugged in. I also -lay bas and drums. If I can find some kind of mic stand and iPad holder like you said I can go over to my drums or wherever and still have complete control. So thanks,

    I really love the versatility of the iPad while using it as a controller for logic, but there’s only a few. things that really get to me. The first is that the piano & drum pad instrument window are not consistently responsive to when you are live playing on it. It’s great to do simple one off notes, but if you’re trying to finger drum on there, its almost a no go. The second is that there’s no menu options when you hold anywhere. It would be really convenient to have the same right click window features (somewhat) available at the touch of a screen on the controller app. Also, there’s no real fun way to quantize in the app. This app still has quite a long way to go, but it has still come very far from what it used to be years ago. I definitely recommend this as its free!
    If you’re looking for other software for other DAWS, I highly recommend Touch OSC, which is has a small, one time fee of 5 bucks.
    Love the channel, keep it up!

    I appreciate and enjoyed your review of the Logic Pro controller for iPad. I just discovered it because like you I was looking for a solution to that very same problem. Plus I’m working with limited space in my studio/bedroom. I didn’t know how much versatility and flexibility this controller had till I saw your review. I also use my iPad for my guitar rig with the boss katana. I’ve been using GarageBand and slowly moving over to Logic Pro X and it works for both. Great job! Will be following you for more great videos!

    Hi, Chris. Yes, I wholeheartedly agree: Logic Remote is awesome. Still a lot left to be desired, but it's really great for what it is. I just wish we were able to engage/disengage input monitoring from the app. Don't know why in the world they left that out.
    Other than that, I think it's wonderful. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you for posting. I was just looking at Launchpad Pro as an option. But watching their videos of having to look at the screen and then at the launchpad pro.. the Loop playing and multi interface sells me on the ipad.. and I already have a 2 year old ipad... so more than up to the task. Will be jumping into Logic with a Mac mini M1 or hopefully an iMac 23” M1x in March (Hoping?). Oh I have Native Instruments Komplete M32 keyboard. It’s great. I got it when it first came out at $99 or $108.. now it’s more expensive with import duty and everything going up.. but it’s still a steal.. more importantly it sits on my keyboard tray in my desk so it’s out of the way till I want to use it. Then just slide it towards me.. there it is.. it’s shallow enough to clear the table in the tray. After touch, good keyboard for GarageBand and later this year Logic... and Komplete Kontrol has a lot of options... will be going for one of their big packs in the Summer Sale (50% off typically for their packages.....) Get the $1,200 package for $600, then I have more than tons of looping and cinematic background tracks for my upcoming indie shorts and movies I am developing. Ok, I’ll check out your other videos next. Thank you for posting.. shared this with some other future logic users already. :)

    I have been using this for years, I also have I.P. Touch. There are pros and cons to each. The biggest problem however, is that connectivity has never been solid. I have been in many situations with many different computers Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and unfortunately, they don’t even offer a USB connection option for iPad control. I also have a Behringer X - touch. Since it is a hard connection, and it is Touch Sensitive and motorized, it is way better in my opinion. The only thing I really like the iPad for is if I am recording vocals in another room and want to start and stop the recording, or if I am using logic for backing tracks and need to control the start and stop, or make monitoring adjustments.

    Thanks for all your videos, friend! By the way, I just bought a Nektar Panorama P6 which automatically assigns to Logic, both DAW and instruments and everything shows on it's screen. I think it doesn't get the attention it deserves by producers. But, I agree that the best controller in the way you are mentioning it, the "apple" way of "you just do" should be the iPad, I have to get one when I can.

    This is a great video. Couldn't agree more. Here's my journey. Behringer X Touch. Not even close. Q Con....great build, nasty software. And much to my surprise the SSL UF8. That HAD to be the one. Again great build, nice faders, but I wonder if they even have a copy of Logic Pro at the lab. I did all the firmware stuff etc. This thing couild NEVER recognize track stacks which, like some people, is the core of my workflow. Honestly I finally got an SSL guy and it was like he didn't even know what track stacks are. OK They all went back to Sweetwater, the best in the business. Anyway, I'm with you Logic remote. If I can find one cheap enough, I might even get one of those great big 12.9 ipads. Wow. Keep doing what you're doing. Best Logic Pro stuff out there.
