I absolutely love this song and don't realize that my soul needs it until it starts up and my brain just slips into comfort mode.
its his voice, he has one of the most mesmerizing voices of any singer ever
I can't believe this song is bordering on ten years old now. You've been a source of joy for me since the 2000s and I truly appreciate you, Mike!
In case anyone's missing this.... This song is awesome.
I can't tell you how much I love this song. I am so thankful my local radio station plays it and introduced me to it. Love it!
Thanks for mentioning 88.9 Radio Milwaukee. It's a cool radio station. I first heard this song on WFUV. Another great radio station that can be listened to online.
this...this is what the world needs much more of.
Maitiu Jarrett yasss I agree so much
This song had caused me to play air banjo.

it's five am and u r listening,,,, u r listening,.,,,,,,,,,,to Mike Doughty!!!!!
The only one listening is st Louis.
Underrated. Wow. Gonna take awhile to absorb this guy and his band. It's not just him, everybody is on it. I am a fan. Big time.
Doughy, please keep making music. Nobody else has your sensibility.
I'm here from soul coughing back in the 90s was wondering what happened to you I've been on a 90s nostalgia trip for the past few months and the past 3 weeks I've been listening to all the soul coughing albums on repeat lol yaw really were a good band wished things would have turned out different it would be nice to see what you guys would be doing today . Much love and respect to you have a good one mike👍👍👍. New subscriber.
Yeah, I saw Soul Coughing live every time they came to Portland back in the old days. It was good finding his stuff again, and this song is a banger. I was actually just listening to Irresistible Bliss and El Oso last night.
Wow.. how is it that it has taken me six years to hear this.?
Love the banjo btw.
i sent my funds to other projects when the motel had exceeded capacity. have remained in the dark until now. if the whole thing is this good, i might just use this utterance of the word light to keep my heart beating. just the word, no need for the physical presence itself. i live as a shut-in n the darkest place in america.
Never stop rocking, Mike!
Namaste 😊
You haven't done it again... you're just consistently doin' it! FANTASTIC!
I don't think I've ever heard a catchier song in my entire life. Instant classic!
Your videos rock.it sir.
I was in a bad mood when I woke up but not any more. Thank you!
I've been
Keeping your views going one day at a time!
Should have way more honestly...
I owe you a lot and you're part of why I'm still alive for sure.
Thank you for reminding me of my brother who introduced me to your music. ❤
Amazing Song! Thanks Mike!
Heard this on el radio on KINK FM 101.9 in Portland, OR and was like all, " Grooovy tune dude!"
Awesome song. And a killer show tonight in Charlottesville. Great job calling out the girl talking during the show. You are my hero for doing that!
Mr. Dougjhty, I love your amazing music...I am a new fan but you definitely are touching my soul...had some drug issues in my past as well...but way too old for that shizzle now..pretty much...lucky me. Please do not stop your musical endeavors! You are innovative, new and make my heart feel very special things like no other artist. Please do not stop creating your music!!
You really think he reads the comment section of this? xD
I never wrote the above comment, someone must have been on my account thinking they were on their own... wierd!
Rick Goodrich lol!
or you were on drugs again
Link will keep your piece of heart in the future!
Outstanding tune and a very hip Banjo...and the solid drums...very cool lyrics !
Nice Mike! Didnt expect to hear that. First song Ive heard from you since SC days. Very fucking cool track! Groovy, great hook, great energy. Now gonna listen to more.....
I can't hear this song enough! Mike Doughty is such an amazing musician. The other members of Soul Coughing really are f'd in the head letting that band dissolve and their egos. Idiots! Mike is the real deal and will continue to produce great music
I fuxking love this song!
Been a fan since early soul coughing when there was an upright bass. Which was amazing. Saw soul coughing downtown nyc. Wtf was the name of the place ?
Hey Mr. Dougherty .. hit me back.
More people need to see this
I didn't know this. Thanks to god for Spotify.
Mr Doughty, Mr McLaren n Quan
in a room together talking music..........................I do not have any idols, but I know for sure that they will they will THROW it down funky n SOULFUL. The mix of Bobby n a fast car was not well executed
His music is amazing.
You were marvellous in St Albans last September.
his voice reminds me of jimmy pop's in the best way possible
I know and love that voice from Soul Coughing! Well done!
I knew the lyrics were muddy lace and rotten lime. Every website, including Spotify, has them as moneyless and ridin' line.
tiiiight
Gotta find me a straw pork pie now !!
Thank you for this. All of it.
Awesome Tune!
Me and my mom love your songs so much! i hope you make more videos of thes songs sone!!
Such a fresh album. Thanks Mike!
Seriously dope video and song
love it...banjo surreal pop!
love the beach boardwalk theme..
Solid gold, as usual.
this is dope! im a new fan!
I highly suggest checking out his 2005 album Haughty Melodic, it's lyrically his best effort since the mid 1990s.
Those dusty tomes
In the antique
bookshop
Are the ones
That don't sell
in the Midwest
The case I left
At the renovated
car park
Was only a still life
The case of cows is still
in vitamin D
Like a stab wound victim
Your trees
called the hand down
While an old shepherd
Weaponizes
his livestock
Bigger hats
Overcast
An overgrown heart
Half
pacemaker
Two legs
The wolf that stands
Selfless phenomenon
Ventricles
Like a dusty moon
Your loves' a loom
The lunatic
The inward Doom
Death and sex
don't need the room
:)
SPECTACULAR!!!
I'm thankful for this new lyrics on screen trend. It's fun. Looking up words on lyrics sites and wondering if it's really what the artist meant is wearying and becomes like this esoteric school of epistemology and culture. It's just easier when they incorporate the text. Also, the new Thunderbolt roller coaster is said to be very rough which could be a good tradition to keep but a surprising addition to the future.
That trend is definably not new, Steve; 20 years ago it was. Also, with this song at least, it'd be really troubling if you had to look the lyrics up. It ain't like he's channeling a drunk Bob Dylan! I'm totally not trying to make any sort of judgement, but you're somewhat younger, right?
Great track Mike!
Awe man there needs to be a single 3rd harmony on the chorus! Especially on the keep your heart beating part.
Awesome track. Request: could you post the official lyrics in the description? They're always poetic, and worth sharing.
The most underrated singer-songwriter in the known universe.
👍awe.some tanks.
I love the song, this video is aweful!!
Dope
I'm amazingly in love with this song! But (and I hate to be THAT person), I can't get over the typo in the video...mandarin is spelled "MADARIN" (2:24). I'm sorrrrrrry.
I thought that exact same thing
They spelled it right...
bugs the hell outta me too, it's a great video otherwise - I wish they could correct it
Mandarin is a dialect of Chinese. That's how it is spelled in the US.
"[Verse 1]
I was in many minds
I was in an airport bookstore
I wait for many moons
Left a suitcase on the fourth floor
Enormous balloons
Gold choker all made out of spoons
Eating super sugar crisp
I was getting used to this
Well
Light will keep your heart beating in the future [2x]
[Chorus]
Keep your heart beating in the -
Keep your heart, keep your heart beating
Keep your heart beating, beating
Keep your heart beating in the (beating in the)
Keep your heart, keep your heart beating
Keep your heart beating, beating
Keep your heart beating in the (beating in the)
[Verse 2]
There was a lot of them
There was a bloody fight next door
There was a crack stem
There was a ghoul on the misty moor
City bus, Ketamine
Lucy Lawless, Magazine
Out of base, Lucky charm
Outer space, Smoke alarm
Light will keep your heart beating in the future [2x]
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
Overlap, Overleaf
Shoulder strap, Fire chief
Porch swing,Moneyless
Purple wine, Freckle face
Heavy hand, Closed door
Contraband, North shore
Fine line, Margarine
Riding line, Mandarin
Light will keep your heart beating in the future [2x]
[Chorus] [6x]"
🎤🎶💕
You are appreciated 💛
Anybody can help me find a collaboration that Mike supposedly did with BT. Track supposed to be called "The Heat And The Hate"
Song is Bad Fucking Ass! I love it!!
Bring back super sugar crisp!
I wasn't there
For one collaboration? ❤️
is this song about the singularity?
I imagine he wrote in the same, abstract observational manner as a lot of his tunes. I'd put money on him writing this after literally being in an airport bookstore looking at books and magazines seeing things like Lucy Lawless on a cover, a story about ketamine, and spotting a girl with a gold choker made out of spoons as a fire alarm went off, as well as some article similar to this one: www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/279218.php
about sandstorm
Where is this filmed?
So am I the only one who is completely lost on what this is even about? Am I missing something? It just sounds like random words that sound good together... maybe I'm dumb.
It’s Jesus that keeps our heart beating (eternal life) in the future.
Is this the same guy from Soul Coughing?
Zachary Lane It most certainly is.
If you can't tell by the voice....
same but different
Production from the always amazing GoodGoose!

I think I need to marry you.
69th commit
You're trying too hard......
But keep trying.🤪
Shame this is one of the only songs I like out of his album... It's so unlike most of his other songs, which contain trashy meanings or lyrics.
Am i the only one that thinks this song is actually pretty terrible and makes no sense? I mean if you wrote the lyrics down and turned it into your English teacher for a poem assignment or something like that i think the teacher would transfer you to special needs... there might be a message behind it but, he does a terrible job at relaying it in an understandable way.
There's no profound message, that isn't Doughty's style.
He just uses his voice as an instrument
your not the only one
Brilliant
