"Ruby Vroom"" I can't believe this terrific album only sold 70, 000 copies. It was legendary amongst my circle of college friends. I mistakenly thought it was massively popular elsewhere.
Just saw them a few days ago, literally one of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen A LOT. They sounded incredible, super tight, no rust. Honestly if they had recorded what they played it would have been better than whats on the album, which is saying a lot because their albums are great. Absolutely insane, so glad they got back together.
Super Bon Bon was truly cutting-edge. Left a strong impression on me, even as a young Black kid in the 90's. Dove into their discography a few years back as an adult and was not disappointed.
Super Bon Bon is my dog's favorite song lol! He's had the same fav toy since be was a puppy, a bunny named "Bun-bun." At some point, I played the song for him and told him it's "The Bun-bun song." He's loved it ever since and goes wild when I play it for him.
My younger brother was in HS when Super Bon Bon came out and one of his friends had a theory about what the song was about. I'm not saying that this IS what it was about, but the friend said he thought it was about the men's room in one of the NY museums, because the men's room at the time was a pay toilet on the mezzanine level
I used to annoy my friends with Super Bon Bon Propellerheads remix and used to sing it as "Move aside and let the mango through. Let the mango through." Not misheard, just more entertaining.
A popular YT channel covering a band like SC is incredibly rare and I'd like to thank you so much for this. Every day I check UA-cam's search results for new videos and none of them surpass 1,000 views. Without a doubt this is my favorite band, and I've been waiting for someone to document the bands history in a video format in depth like this for so long. To cut it short, this is awesome.
It's funny because that one song that uses like that ominous old cartoon music I've heard people say it scares the crap out of them. I love that song though.
Just saw Soul Coughing play in Denver. Incredible show! The sound was perfect. I had previously seen Mike play with a couple of different backing bands. Those shows were really good, This tour has shown me just what chemistry in a band can do. If you have the chance? Do! Pay too much I'm telling you it's worth it!

I got to do sound for one of Mike’s solo shows in 2018. He was so professional, nice and unpretentious.. Very humble. I wish him all the luck in the world!!
I was actually listening to my favorite Soul Coughing songs last night on my drive home. My favorite is Lazybones. That song has got such a unique, chill vibe to it. The constant guitar notes that start out the song, and stay constant throughout the entire tune. The syncopated drum beats, the low and hypnotic bass line. And then Doughtry's lyrics flowing through, with his signature "uuuhh" sound at the end of nearly every sentence. It's just such a fantastic track. It always reminds me of how I felt as a teenager, on a hot summer evening, right as dusk is fading into night. With nothing to do but watch the sky shift to darkness and stars. The sounds of animals and traffic flowing through my open window as a backing track to the season. That song truly transports me.
Well, my longstanding internet moniker comes from Screenwriter's Blues. Just loved how those two words sounded together. Glad to see all the love for this band.
Thank you for doing this! I lived in Minneapolis in the early 90's. I got the chance to see them many times and turned many of my friends. To this day, they are my favorite band.
Still coughing has to be one of the most diverse original bands of all time. Stream writers blues and true dreams of Wichita are epic, Ruby Vroom incredibly underrated.
Soul Coughing has been one of my favorite bands for forever. I’m SO HAPPY you did this as I think they’re constantly overlooked and under appreciated. I saw them live on the El Oso tour, and it was just fantastic. I missed them playing the Metro in Chicago by a week. I’ve been lucky enough to see Doughty live a bunch of times. I’ve talked to him and he’s really nice and gracious to fans.
Oh shoot I remember them. Dude keep it up with these somewhat obscure bands. I’m still in awe of the jellyfish video. I had never heard their music although was somewhat aware of the band. Now I’m obsessed! Thanks 🙏

It might just be that YOU are the asshole That's essentially paraphrased from "Justified" but it still stands true. When EVERYONE out there seems to be a prick, it might be time for some reflection and self-realization. I STILL love cranking Soul Coughing, one of my fav bands to listen to when cycling/driving. However, Doughty might need to look in a mirror and see that he might have been part of, if not THE problem.
Soul Coughing is still one of my favorite bands from the 90's, saw them in Chicago and they were fantastic. I loved their sound which I found to be a mix of alternative, rock, jazz, and spoken word poetry. This band should have been much bigger in my opinion, but they imploded.
Yuval was amazing drummer to watch live. In one summer in the 90's I was privileged to see him and Quest Love do insanely long drum solos . Yuval did his with a dollar bill sweat glued to his forehead. They both looked like machines, amazing.
First discovered Soul Coughing as a little kid when Cartoon Network would play videos to Circles and Rolling set to old cartoons. Ended up re-discovering them as a teenager and devoured their whole discography. El Oso is still one of my personal top favorites.
Truly one of my all time favourite bands of the 90's. Doughty's works from then and since has been a constant wash of creative bliss. His vocals for 808 State is just *chef's kiss*. 'El Oso' is still one of my favourites.
*Doughty's works*? Mark Degli Antoni can likely claim at least half of the success of soul coughing if my suspicions are correct. Yuval & Seb might have something to say too. I only say this because all of Doughty's solo stuff has frankly sounded incredibly lacklustre to me.
I love some Mike Doughty. I saw Soul Coughing at a concert In Mpls. with a bunch of other bands called "Zone for the Holidays" because the radio station that sponsored it was "the Zone". Amazing band. Amazing DJ. Mike is amazing. Get onto the bus. Cheers.
Thank you for this! SC were my favorite band in the 90's. A few notes: Keyboardist's name is Mark DeGli Antoni (pronounced degli Antoni) not Dilianti. Drummer Yuval Gabay's last name is pronounced Gu-Bye like "Goodbye". Otherwise, I love seeing a criminally underrated band getting some attention. Thank you!
Heeeeeey you did my request!!! Thanks!! I love this band so much. Too bad they never lasted but I suppose all art is temporary. I’ve always had a dream that one day Soul Coughing will reunite but Doughty won’t want to rejoin the group and I wind up filling in on vocals. Someday…. Someday…
The perfect mix of quirky and funky with a hip hop nod and random sounds and samples from Mark. It was perfect for entertaining the adult world in the mid to late nineties. Thanks to a good friend who turned me on to the ‘Ruby Vroom’ album in ‘95. I became an instant fan an never looked back. ‘Irresistible Bliss’ is hands-down still my favorite of the three.
I went to see Mike for one of his solo performances in 2002. It was amazing, the guy really killed it. Afterwards he was wandering around the hallways of the university. He seemed kind of alone. I wanted to invite him to hang out, but didn't want to impose on such a great musician as an 17-year old kid.
Screenwriter's Blues was played more on alternative and underground radio than any of their other tracks. Another one of those "you had to be there to know" kind of things.
I would see these guys performing all the time in 1994-95 when I was in graduate school where I was getting an MFA. I lived in Williamsburg Brooklyn and Soul Coughing was playing in all of our studios while we worked. We would leave our studios in Chelsea and head down to the Lower East side and would see them and other great bands at the Knitting Factory or Max Fish or some tiny loft “club” that just sprang up the week before and would probably be closed by the end of the month. They were a gem something only we knew and we hoped to keep it that way. You say they only sold 70,000 albums and I think they all went to me and my friends. Seriously was a great band and a small group of devoted fans that circled around them. Skateboarders , of which I was one, loved them . Was bummed that they broke up but I’m glad to see Mike is doing better I had heard he was in a bad place for a while. Thanks for the video.
I saw them for the first time in Cleveland in the Fall of 96 at the Odeon - stood right up front next to the stage, and they brought the place down that night. One of the best shows I've ever seen. It was pure manic insanity. I then saw them three or four more times after that before they broke up, but nothing was like that first time. I only knew one song and just decided to check them out on a whim - Failure opened that night too - and I became a fan for life after that. When El Oso came out, they played the bigger Agora theater - and that show was insane too. Great live band. I really wish they would've lasted longer.

@@iggypyro78 Hell yeah. I was at both of those Cleveland shows. OMG, the El Oso tour at The Agora was so awesome! I’m still in awe of Yuval playing those D&B beats live.
wow. great video on an even greater band. caught them at the Euclid Tavern in Cleveland back in the 90s. props for keeping great stuff alive like this on your channel. oh year, they toured with Cop Shoot Cop, another N.Y.C. band. spotlight the next. Their album Release is more than a banger
So happy to see this vid. One of my favorote shows of all time was a 1995 show at my college with Morphine and Soul Coughing. SC was so damn ahead of its time. Would absolutely love to see them do a reunion.
my first time hearing Sou Coughing was late nite [adult swim] with the videos for circles (involving and OLD school cartoon of cows racing) and another song with another OLD school cartoon of like minnie mouse being shady or somesuch I can't remember exactly. El Oso is a great album.
They had one of the greatest websites of any band, ever. Well crafted, well thought out....lyrics, stories about the songs. The day they split up, the home screen just said (I'm paraphrasing) "After so many years and three albums we have decided to go separate ways". One day it was business as usual, the next they were gone. Sometimes I don't know if I miss them or the website more!
No way. I have seen Mike Doughty open for Big Head Todd in Greensboro, NC. I didn't look too deep into his career but I will have to check out this band!
In 96 they were still touring college radio, which is how I met them. I have a compilation album for my local U with them on it from that time. Arguably the widest audience they were ever introduced to was via the X Files album.
I saw Soul Coughing open up for Cop Shoot Cop at Maxwell’s before their first album came out. They were amazing live. I thought the first album was really good, but didn’t quit capture their live energy. Speaking of Cop Shoot Cop, that’s an under rated band you should do a video on. The singer of ¢$¢, Todd A, later went on to form Firewater that Yuval Gabay ended up playing with for a brief time.
Thanks! I raced right out to um, UA-cam to find Bosho's Chop Socky! Excellent stuff, reminds me of Captain Beefheart and/or King Crimson in their Belew phase.
Saw them on tour in Minneapolis promoting their 1st album. Great album, great show ! Also saw Mike Doughty solo show back east. Very cranky, he left show IMMEDIATELY after last song ended. I'm sure I heard him doing a burn-out to escape the venue.
Do you remember if that show was at Fineline or First Ave?? I saw that show too. It was so so good. I’ve been a fan ever since then. Nothing quite like them. I miss live music.
I saw them in Port Chester around 1995 or 96. You could go right up and talk to them before the show; they encouraged interaction and were very cool and friendly. Doughty was fantastic, a little on purpose a little David Byrne and a little avant garde cool. He took a position. I really liked that band and while I liked all the players I thought he was the prodigy who stirred the drink.
One of my all-time favorite bands. Saw them on the tours for all 3 albums, saw Doughty go from lean, hungry, to skinny, junkie. I still miss this band, although Doughty has given us plenty to keep us satisfied.
I accidently discovered them in the Knitting Factory in the beginning of my NYC internship 1993 and joined all their 10 concerts during my half year there. Loved it sooo much. Mark Degli Antoni gave me a demo tape with the most intense version of Screenwriter's Blues, my most favourite SC track. So sad they split up. Best live band I ever saw.
My high school girlfriend introduced me to screenwriter’s blues and I think she traded the album to me for something I gave her. But I played that cd for years throughout college.
And for the top comment, yes! Mike is amazing! Without mikes energy on stage and in the studio and lyrics, the other band mates would not have gone far
I saw them touring when they were opening for They Might be Giants. I remember them being one of the few opening acts the Giants ever had the audience really seemed to genuinely enjoy. I was used to one of the Johns having to come out before the opening act and remind the audience to treat the opener with respect because despite what the audience may think, they were chosen to be the opening act because both John and John enjoyed their music. (Soul Coughing and OK Go) are honestly, those are the only two opening acts I've seen with TMBG that I even remember despite having seen them dozens of times. I know I went out and bought their first two albums immediately and then El Oso as soon as it came out. I still have all three of them on rotation to this day.
Always been a big fan of Soul Coughing and of Mike Doughty in particular. I bought a copy of skittish on burned CD and had him sign it when he came to my college. I still prize that album and it made it clear he was the Soul of Soul Coughing.
And now Soul Coughing are back!
And I just saw them and they are playing great ❤

Saw them a few times and always a serious blast!!! Love SC but I love Mike as well! He is an amazing artist! ✌️♥️🎹
Saw Mike Doughty at First Avenue like 12 years ago. Awesome show!
I would pay sooooo much money to go to a soul coughing reunion show.
they're back!
I still really enjoy the music this band gave us. Listened to them today by chance. Great songs with cool beats.
In 96 they were still touring college radio, which is how I met them. I have a compilation album for my local U with them on it from that time. Arguably the widest audience they were ever introduced to was via the X Files album.
I definitely didn't realize that was a soul coughing song until just now going to have to go look that up.
When they started a buddy of mine misread the name as "Soul COUCH-ing"! They sounded great no matter the name!
Soul Coughing oh my god. I was obsessed with them as a kid ever since I heard "Circles" on Cartoon Network.
One of my absolute favorite bands..loved this episode!
Cop Shoot Cop is amazing, very original and influential on many current music styles.
‘It only hurts when I breath’ is one of the tightest, sharpest songs I’ve ever heard:)
Love Firewater, one of the most original - and overlooked - rock bands out there! Tod A. is the Tom Waits of the new millennium!
I love this band and listen to the 1 and 2 all the time.
His solo stuff is genius.
I hope he makes more music .
Great story, thank you for sharing this
Looks like the Reunion is finally happening!! Sept/Oct 2024!!!
@Jackie Robbins It was First Avenue, not The Entry (but that venue was cool too : )
One of my favorite shows ~ ever
Love Soul Coughing! Love M Doughty. Havent missed an album yet.
Gosh darn I loved Soul Coughing. Was my favorite band in the 90s.
Ruby vroom is a MASTERPIECE
...and yet, here we are.
And they’re are back on tour original members 👍
They're inside me, they've never left my soul. I know Mike is solo now, but That's Right and Chinese Spies has the top spot on my newest playlist.
6:14 Love how they put in a picture of Joey Baron on drums - he’s a legend drummer in my books.
I remember them from that Flintstones Boomerang bumper with that song circles
That's how i found them lol i still have the sample cd that song was on. Some shoe store back in the day was handing it out if you bought something.
The Flintstones one was good but the crazy I'm rolling now Betty boop one was awesome.
I remember Circles was played on Alternative Rock radio when it came out alongside Korn, Limp Bizkit, & Kid Rock. Man, the 1990s. What a time.....
"You get the ankles and I'll get the wrists"
You come down to this…
One of my all-time favorite bands.
Thanks for sharing!
Would you be able to share that demo with us? I'd love to hear that version of it!
@@nerdtronix3653 No idea, where that tape could be.... 🤷
But now they're back!
@@martinhsl68hw WTF, I don't believe it! Just saw their new US tour dates. Hmm, hope so much, they'll also come to Europe/Germany again....
I'm glad I got to see them. I'm thinking it was the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. Just a really cool, fun vibe!
Thank you for making this!
My high school girlfriend introduced me to screenwriter’s blues and I think she traded the album to me for something I gave her. But I played that cd for years throughout college.
Amazing song. One of like two or three SC pieces I like. I enjoy his solo work much better.
And they’re touring now!!!
I picked up one of Doughty's solo records called Sad Man/Happy Man. It's exceptional.
it's nice. But no match compared to Soulcoughing. Sorry, he's just a part of the whole magic.
Mike wrote all the songs in soul coughing and he formed the band so….there you go
And for the top comment, yes!
That’s remarkably thoughful and wholesome of them. Another reason to love TMBG. ❤️
i first heard them I was 11 or 12, I never looked back, since then they've always been one of my favorite bands
THEY’RE HAVING A FALL REUNION TOUR
I figured if you had a Cake video you for sure had a Soul Coughing one. I was right.
Soul coughing was incredible so is mike douty solo
This is very very strange. Just played 'ruby vroom' on my old hifi. Now turned on you tube ..an what do i see! :-) You documentery! Wow! :-)
Anybody who played Gran Turismo 2 knows Super Bon Bon.
I saw them last night in NYC so …. They rise again!!
Always been a big fan of Soul Coughing and of Mike Doughty in particular.
I bought a copy of skittish on burned CD and had him sign it when he came to my college. I still prize that album and it made it clear he was the Soul of Soul Coughing.
'Screenwriter's Blues' is my all-time favorite song about LA...
I knew if I looked long enough I would find it!
I love the song Circles. It brings me right back to being 8 or 9 in the late 90s stealing CDs and cassettes from my older brother.
