I've never owned a Sonic Game. But I heard it's pretty good and it's only $30.
Mania for the most part is a nostalgia trip for fans of the Genesis Sonic games but even as an entry level game I'd still highly recommend it to anybody.

I wish I would have waited. I’m a physical copy guy and also a huge Sonic fan. I wish this was announced when it was released digitally. So instead of a $20 game it will now be $50 by double dipping. I will no doubt get it but regret I could have bypassed the digital version.

Colors and Generations are like those good kids in class who got really good test grades but don’t get noticed because the rest of his class mates(3D Sonic games) are so rowdy and undisciplined.

Sonic Mania Plus is my first Sonic game ever. I just picked it up today and am having a ball so far!

If you have steam on a PC you can buy the original 3 sonic titles for dirt cheap and experience them. Then go back and play sonic mania again. it's AMAZING how seamless the progression from 3+K to Mania is... you can tell it has the advantage of being made in more recent times, but the visuals, the gameplay itself and the music definitely give you the feel of the originals and that makes the original 3 all the more important for you to try...
Ordered for the switch! I haven't played Sonic in handheld since the Game Gear !
Tbh the only ‘good’ sonic games in the 2005 to 2016 era is Colours and Generations

Silver/Nick Personally, not a big fan. Probably just that it felt underdeveloped, probably because they spent over half the time making Forces working on a new engine. However no place but up, eh?

That physical copy though!! I just had to preorder it because of how beautiful it is.
Sonic Mania was almost the best Sonic game ever. The update makes it quite possibly the best Sonic game ever. They fixed pretty much all of the tiny complaints I had against the original release. 3&K is my nostalgic favorite but if I take off the rose colored glasses this game is fantastic.
The UK version has a Mega Drive style box.

Sonic Mania/Sonic Mania Plus saved the Classic Sonic franchise.
I remember a year ago when this game came out, and I told myself, “I got a backlog so I’ll wait for a price drop to experience Sonic.” Now I see a great-looking physical release of an eShop game that I’m interested in? This will be a great way to get into classic Sonic, Day 1 purchase with no hesitation!

I so excited for game I have it digital but I don't care I want a physical copy of the game instead. I love Mania, best Sonic game ever in my opinion. 7:01 cool pinball stage It really reminds me of Sonic Adventure 1 Casinopolis stage with the Sonic & Nights Pinball.
Mighty and Ray were also Sonics buddies in Japan exclusive Sonic The hedgehog Arcade back in the day. Oh and Mighty and Ray were originally gonna be Sonic and Tails before Sega went with Sonic.

It's like you know you are getting screwed because you already have the digital copy and want the physical copy, but you don't really care. Yep, this game really did take me back to fall of '94 and days of lock on technology.
The sonic mega collection game series is 1 thousand times better; however for the better graphics and difference in story and style, “in a way” make this game a great game, at least from anything else in the recent years.
See me I don't care what people think I like the Sonic lost worlds I think that's what it was called it was for the Wii U

Ray the flying squirrel's hover ability gives off Super Mario World Cape Mario vibes.
Sonic Generations is one of my favorites. Was a good mix of old 2d and new 3D. Plus it brought back some of the favorite Zones in precious Sonic games.
Never played Sonic as was always a Nintendo/Mario fan. Have downloaded Sonic Mania to see what I missed.
I'm gonna buy it on all three consoles then I can display the hologram cover, the original cover and the genesis cover. Love me some Sonic Mania

Thanks for this review Shawn. I just recently purchased my Switch and have been looking for games to add to my collection. I definitely miss the old school Sega generation style Sonic games. This one will be a must have.
I think this game feels more at home on the Switch than the other consoles. I really hope we get a Sonic Mania 2 some day, I feel that 3D Sonic games is a breed of game that needs to go extinct.

If you already have the digital copy of the game and you want to get the physical version, what will effect the game.
I am sorry getting this but I want to warn that preorders are not showing the special edition with the art book in the product images. If you are wanting to get that version, Be sure to confirm that with the retailer.

I bought digitally for Switch and I also ordered the physical version... I love this game and I had so much fun playing thru this game last year. Definitely getting this Plus version and playing with the new characters!

Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 3 is my favorite is in my top 10 games of all time. So when i played Sonic Mania for the first time i actually cried tears of joy and i am a grown as man in his 30s. First good Sonic game in over 20 years. Now i wouldn't say Mania is actually better than that, its not. But if you love the 4 genesis games (its actually 5 with CD but i count 3+ knuckles as the same game) like every sonic fan do you're gonna love it, definitely in my top 5 of last year. And even though i already own the digital version of this for my switch i will pay the extra $25 to get the physical version of this game.
Brilliant review RGT 85. I am not even a Sonic fan and I have picked up Sonic Mania on the Eshop and this Sonic Mania physical version is looking dope and I will probably pick this up aswell.

Actually Christian Whitehead wasn't releasing them without permission, he pitch the idea of a from the ground up remaster of Sonic CD to SEGA and they gave him the green light for iOS, Android with Console and Steam ports. Later he did the same to Sonic 1 and 2, and then afterwards he and his team pitched Sonic Discovery which later became Mania.

It would be nice if in the Plus version they also includes the Knuckles game, because I loved the level design in that, but I'm still going to have to pick this one up.

To be honest. Mighty feels like he has the bubble shield bounce and ray is inspired by Cape mario from smw and how the flight controls.

Ray the flying Squirrel's gliding ability looks like a clone version of Mario's Cape Mario power up in Super Mario World but it looks more natural on a Squirrel character than Mario.
I wish it was released on the eShop today. But I guess it won't hurt to wait an extra week

Adam McLean at SDCC last year during their panel, it’s also apparent from the level design choices, the music fitting the new jack swing style of the Saturn in the 90s, even stuff in the menu has Saturn controllers.
True, but the sprites and soundtrack are very much more Genesis based than Saturn based. (aside from special stages)

I honestly think you might not know how to use Ray's gliding properly if you feel like you are not in control.
Many people think you have to press up and down on the control stick to make him glide but you actually just press left and right.
I have been waiting for the physical copy. Definitely picking this up.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles was the best Sonic game of all time. Sonic Mania was excellent but not better than this legendary Sega Genesis combo.
Too true!...I was very shocked that sonic mania did not have as many levels as sonic3+ knuckles...

I never would've bought the digital version if I knew this awesome physical package was going to come out. I feel like that is the catch 22 of the Switch, some people want physical carts, but indie games have to sell well in the first place in order to justify going physical. It's just frustrating because every time there is a release there is this "will they, won't they?" dance we do of if it is eventually releasing a physical copy. I'm currently waiting on Hollow Knight because I have a sneaking suspicion it will go physical at some point. I want to support the game on switch (I already have it on PC), but I don't wan't to be tricked into buying an extra digital version.

What I want to know is, did they finally put the logo on the thumbnail for the switch version? Kind of bothered me that every game has a thumbnail with that title/logo except sonic mania lmao
I love playing this, especially local player mode because I still play Sonic 2 on my Mega Drive 2 local player with my family too :D.
Great video RGT. I absolutely love Sonic Mania and cannot wait to buy this update DLC on digital PS4, but guess what.... as a person who is not a fan of Physical Media, I personally DO want to take the plunge with this one and buy a Physical copy for the Switch.
Sonic Generations is a good game, the DS had a couple great games as well and I even enjoyed Sonic Rush on PSP.. I still think overall there were more good Sonic games than bad ones. But there are stinkers for sure. I love that this is a retro game in widescreen, game is fun..Definitely worth the digital purchase of 20 AU with the current sale, but not worth it to pay 60 or even more in AUD for the physical release. Not for me anyway.

I didn’t get the download when it first came out, I wanted to wait until a physical copy was released, I am old-school like that
