If Nintendo does this, they need to follow Atari's example and make any cartridges and controllers work on original hardware as well. That's what makes what Atari is doing so cool. They're not doing any tricks, the games work as they would have originally.

Nintendo should make new systems that can play old cartridges. I have a lot of NES/SNES games in storage but no CRT, and modern updates like a wireless controller. Or maybe a new system that can fit old NES/SNES/N64 games in one.

I want nintendo to make a switch cartridge of 50 nes classics with 2 nes nso controllers with a book of the 50 game history and the nes as well. Have digital eclipse do it they can throw in digital manuals,tips, interviews etc. That would be a pre order purchase for me.

Great vid and points! I always thought his myself; but the only difference is that it would be better if they just simply started selling their old retro games steadily on the eshop and in physical carts forms. WE know the next gen Switch will be backwards compatible and Nintendo would do well to just make every console they release from this gen on; forward compatible with whatever comes after. It would also make sense to release one more Switch lite vairant; after the release of the Next gen Switch; that plays all the current Switch games; but be more pocket friendly (think a 4 inch screen and form factor like the Anbenic Cube; you know what I am talking about RGT; I see what you have ontop of that NES championship box) and have 7 hour batter life with HDMI out via a cable. I am relcutant at the idea of brining an 8 inch screen device on my work commutes; but a 4 inch screen device to help me finish the backlog and can continue to play at better quality on the Switch 2 when I come home; would be a very vaible option. Also; it will help me finally stop buying these Chinese handhelds with their various Quality Assurance defects (ironically I have spent more on emulation handhelds than I would have; if Nintendo would just sell me their retro games).I have bought enough retro compilations for the Switch and most of may favorites are available; to where a Switch Pocket would be the perfect solution. Heck; they could incorporate your idea of making a new NES mini; utlinzing SWITCH carts; which are also compatible with Switch, Switch Lite, Switch 2 and Switch Pocket; making Evercade go the same way as Arcade 1 up. Again, IF nintendo would just stop messing around with this ridiciculous NSO subscription only way of accessing their games; this could be VERY viable as you say.
I would absolutely love if nintendo did this. Let's be real here there not doing virtual console ever again to be able to physically own there old library that's just gold to me. being able to play old games on switch online it's cool but you don't own those games. that's the big difference with me.
Nostalgia only drives business if the old stuff was great. That’s why new IPs are also important. It makes young people feel nostalgic for these IPs when they are old. I agree companies should never forget their old stuff, but I also don’t want new ideas to stall as a result.

I think that Nintendo should continue to focus on creating new games full steam ahead into the future. Remember at one time all those classics were once new games as well so Nintendo must continue to do new all the way. The classics will always be there and new classics will be born.

This is actually a good idea and I actually agree with you. RTG Nintendo is leaving money on the table with something like this. Imagine they released an NES or SNES for that matter that actually plays the original cartridges which I believe it would be a success and hopefully maybe Sega will do something similar with the genesis/mega drive.?

Atari 2600+ and there releasing the Atari 7800+ 🤗 I can now go back to check out the Atari 7800 because back in the day I was given a choice the Atari 7800 or a Nintendo Entertainment System AKA the NES I passed on Atari for Nintendo so it cool to go back and see what the Atari 7800 was all about
You know, it is weird that there is a lack of reboots of games from 20+ years ago in the game industry in comparison to other media industries. It seemed like that could have been a thing when we saw a taste of it in the late 90s/early 00s. The game industry in general is weird about nostalgia, they never truly cross the line. Atari is one of the big exceptions though, I do appreciate how they’re doing it.
Companies are definitely missing out when it come to older games and systems. If they re released games and consoles that would be awesome. I'd be spending all my money

To be honest. Most of all the games I buy on the switch are all 8-16 bit pixel platformers. I would buy a new nes or snes cartridge console from Nintendo in a second.
Atari's plan could be applied not only to Nintendo, but to Sega or NEC's 16 bit systems. Imagine a Sega Genesis+ or PC Engine Duo+. Also, remaking cartridge-based consoles could open up new developers to making retro video games on their favorite systems. And (this next part could be too expensive to pull off) first-party companies could rerelease cartridge games like Super Mario World or Sonic 3 in brand new, clean plastic yet using the same/similar technology as the internals of an actual cartridge. It could also keep hidden gems from getting to expensive on the eBay market.
I think we can all mostly agree that if Nintendo released a Wii and/or a GameCube Classic it'd be an absolute sales smash, and that folks would camp out for one. Onto your thought, you can always count on Nintendo to do something super unexpected and not follow anyone.
There is always a possibility they will make an N64 mini. But, realistically, they probably won’t. This is because it costs money to produce a system and isn’t guaranteed to sell out, plus they also have this on their online service platform which they make more money off of since it is subscription based. Still, time will tell and again, it would be cool if they did.

I just have way, way too many game consoles, classic consoles, dongles and a metric assload of other random electronic systems that I can't even plug in 'cause I'm all out of HDMI ports on my two TVs. While the Atari sounds cool, I've pretty much settled on the ports on my main TV being occupied by Nintendo, Xbox and either PlayStation or Raspberry Pi/mini-PC for retro gaming. I've just got no ports to spare, and on top of that, I've got random electronics that I can't even use (due to lack of said HDMI ports) all over the place. That's why Nintendo *better* take backwards compatibility seriously...
If Nintendo was smart they wouldn't have backwards compatibility in the next system forcing everybody to buy their re-releases that will inevitably come out
I think this would be amazing for people that want to have a new console for their old games and for there to be new titles too. I also wish that there was a there was a Nintendo site and Sega site where you could plug in your Classic Edition/Mini console to your PC and download more games for like $5 each without hacking your console.
You can also rock 2600 games on that beast. I remember that small joystick. My favorite game was the maze game with electrified walls. Can't remember nor find the name of it. It was Beserk, thanks. I would never have remembered.
Bounty Bob Strikes Back is a new game for the 7800 made for the release of the 7800+. Frenzy, Bezerk, Cavern Of Mars (2600), Bentley Bear, and the other 7800 games have all received varying degrees of enhancement over their homebrew originals, so there are new games. They all have on-board Pokey/D.S.P on every cart besides Cavern Of Mars. There'll be more too. We'll see third-party Master System and N.E.S. games ported to the 7800, and tons of other classic 8-bit games. Many will come from ATARI's many acquisitions. I can see SEGA and Nintendo following suit if the 7800+ sells well.
Nintendo should just make a new retro console. FPGA chips powerful enough to hardware emulate those old consoles are gonna be small and cheap. $200 for a NES or SNES or even an N64… imagine going to a store and seeing an N64 with 2 wireless controllers, an HDMI port as well as a copy of Super Smash Bros… 40 year old kids everywhere would be knocking people over to try and get one. Lines would be wrapped around Targets and WalMarts all across this country

I think it's a good idea and would sell as well. But honestly? I'd be happy if they just made physical ports of their older games for the Switch. Doesn't even need to be a remaster or remake. A lot of their older physical games are insanely expensive in the used gaming market. I'm not paying near or over $100 for one game.
Yes if ATARI a dead shell of there old self could make a NEW Atari home consoles that could take old and new Atari cart games I don't see why Nintendo an 11 Billion dollar company could not do a real Nintendo consoles that could take real Nintendo carts. Since 2004 The Atari Flashback systems was sold in many store from Walmart, Best Buy and Target and to this day you can go up to them and still see them Atari Flashback units and folks are still buying them and with the 2600+ and now the new 7800+ you can not only play new 7800 games but also any of your old ones you have and also every new homebrew you can find at Atariage store and what funny is I help making box art for there new Atari games for years and still doing them to this day.

If Nintendo does this, they need to follow Atari's example and make any cartridges and controllers work on original hardware as well. That's what makes what Atari is doing so cool. They're not doing any tricks, the games work as they would have originally.

Nintendo should make new systems that can play old cartridges. I have a lot of NES/SNES games in storage but no CRT, and modern updates like a wireless controller. Or maybe a new system that can fit old NES/SNES/N64 games in one.

I want nintendo to make a switch cartridge of 50 nes classics with 2 nes nso controllers with a book of the 50 game history and the nes as well. Have digital eclipse do it they can throw in digital manuals,tips, interviews etc. That would be a pre order purchase for me.
2025 is the year of the Switch Successor. Just make an N64 mini in all the different translucent colors and those will sell.

Great vid and points! I always thought his myself; but the only difference is that it would be better if they just simply started selling their old retro games steadily on the eshop and in physical carts forms. WE know the next gen Switch will be backwards compatible and Nintendo would do well to just make every console they release from this gen on; forward compatible with whatever comes after. It would also make sense to release one more Switch lite vairant; after the release of the Next gen Switch; that plays all the current Switch games; but be more pocket friendly (think a 4 inch screen and form factor like the Anbenic Cube; you know what I am talking about RGT; I see what you have ontop of that NES championship box) and have 7 hour batter life with HDMI out via a cable. I am relcutant at the idea of brining an 8 inch screen device on my work commutes; but a 4 inch screen device to help me finish the backlog and can continue to play at better quality on the Switch 2 when I come home; would be a very vaible option. Also; it will help me finally stop buying these Chinese handhelds with their various Quality Assurance defects (ironically I have spent more on emulation handhelds than I would have; if Nintendo would just sell me their retro games).I have bought enough retro compilations for the Switch and most of may favorites are available; to where a Switch Pocket would be the perfect solution. Heck; they could incorporate your idea of making a new NES mini; utlinzing SWITCH carts; which are also compatible with Switch, Switch Lite, Switch 2 and Switch Pocket; making Evercade go the same way as Arcade 1 up. Again, IF nintendo would just stop messing around with this ridiciculous NSO subscription only way of accessing their games; this could be VERY viable as you say.

I think that Nintendo should continue to focus on creating new games full steam ahead into the future. Remember at one time all those classics were once new games as well so Nintendo must continue to do new all the way. The classics will always be there and new classics will be born.

This is actually a good idea and I actually agree with you. RTG Nintendo is leaving money on the table with something like this. You know, it is weird that there is a lack of reboots of games from 20+ years ago in the game industry in comparison to other media industries. It seemed like that could have been a thing when we saw a taste of it in the late 90s/early 00s. The game industry in general is weird about nostalgia, they never truly cross the line. Atari is one of the big exceptions though, I do appreciate how they’re doing it.

To be honest. Most of all the games I buy on the switch are all 8-16 bit pixel platformers. I would buy a new nes or snes cartridge console from Nintendo in a second.
Atari's plan could be applied not only to Nintendo, but to Sega or NEC's 16 bit systems. Imagine a Sega Genesis+ or PC Engine Duo+. Also, remaking cartridge-based consoles could open up new developers to making retro video games on their favorite systems. And (this next part could be too expensive to pull off) first-party companies could rerelease cartridge games like Super Mario World or Sonic 3 in brand new, clean plastic yet using the same/similar technology as the internals of an actual cartridge. It could also keep hidden gems from getting to expensive on the eBay market.
I think we can all mostly agree that if Nintendo released a Wii and/or a GameCube Classic it'd be an absolute sales smash, and that folks would camp out for one. Onto your thought, you can always count on Nintendo to do something super unexpected and not follow anyone.

There is always a possibility they will make an N64 mini. But, realistically, they probably won’t. This is because it costs money to produce a system and isn’t guaranteed to sell out, plus they also have this on their online service platform which they make more money off of since it is subscription based. Still, time will tell and again, it would be cool if they did.

This is a great idea, especially right now. Retro is HUGE! I would like to see a GameBoy and SNES, too. The NES would sell like hotcakes! I’m in.
I just have way, way too many game consoles, classic consoles, dongles and a metric assload of other random electronic systems that I can't even plug in 'cause I'm all out of HDMI ports on my two TVs.
While the Atari sounds cool, I've pretty much settled on the ports on my main TV being occupied by Nintendo, Xbox and either PlayStation or Raspberry Pi/mini-PC for retro gaming. I've just got no ports to spare, and on top of that, I've got random electronics that I can't even use (due to lack of said HDMI ports) all over the place.
That's why Nintendo *better* take backwards compatibility seriously...
If Nintendo was smart they wouldn't have backwards compatibility in the next system forcing everybody to buy their re-releases that will inevitably come out

I think this would be amazing for people that want to have a new console for their old games and for there to be new titles too. I also wish that there was a there was a Nintendo site and Sega site where you could plug in your Classic Edition/Mini console to your PC and download more games for like $5 each without hacking your console.
You can also rock 2600 games on that beast. I remember that small joystick. My favorite game was the maze game with electrified walls. Can't remember nor find the name of it. It was Beserk, thanks. I would never have remembered.

Bounty Bob Strikes Back is a new game for the 7800 made for the release of the 7800+.
Frenzy, Bezerk, Cavern Of Mars (2600), Bentley Bear, and the other 7800 games have all received varying degrees of enhancement over their homebrew originals, so there are new games.
They all have on-board Pokey/D.S.P on every cart besides Cavern Of Mars.
There'll be more too.
We'll see third-party Master System and N.E.S. games ported to the 7800, and tons of other classic 8-bit games.
Many will come from ATARI's many acquisitions.
I can see SEGA and Nintendo following suit if the 7800+ sells well.
Nintendo should just make a new retro console. FPGA chips powerful enough to hardware emulate those old consoles are gonna be small and cheap. $200 for a NES or SNES or even an N64… imagine going to a store and seeing an N64 with 2 wireless controllers, an HDMI port as well as a copy of Super Smash Bros… 40 year old kids everywhere would be knocking people over to try and get one. Lines would be wrapped around Targets and WalMarts all across this country

Since 2004 The Atari Flashback systems was sold in many store from Walmart, Best Buy and Target and to this day you can go up to them and still see them Atari Flashback units and folks are still buying them and with the 2600+ and now the new 7800+ you can not only play new 7800 games but also any of your old ones you have and also every new homebrew you can find at Atariage store and what funny is I help making box art for there new Atari games for years and still doing them to this day.
