    The trees are cork oaks and are harvested for their bark every 9 years or so. Originally used for wine bottles but cork has many uses.

      When I was in Portugal, in some places at least, when they harvest the cork they paint the year on the tree so they know when they can harvest it again.

      @Inge, no 🤭 I didn't, but I quickly found out when holding a part of the bark. I guess we can keep learning for the rest of our lives!

      So many !!! From our trip down the coast of california to our local rails to trails along the allegheny river we have some really fun places. As far as tent camping ugh our night sleeps are so hit or miss. I think a lot has to do with our surroundings. We have a lot of bears in our area it can make for intermittent sleep.

    We were so happy to recognize that beach from our biketrip across Southern Europe a few months ago! (we went from Romania to Spain) We loved it and its vastness, crossing it was one of our favourite mornings :) We were also quite "tortured" by boars while in France. In terms of the quality of sleep in the tent while on the road, I can totally relate! I did not find a solution and I honestly don't think there is one while wildcamping. Probably earplugs but it's not safe not to be aware of what's going on around the tent. The best wildcamping sleep I usually get is next to a sea or water making constant noise or in really well hidden places (mostly in Romania that has a lot of nature) or up in the mountains. But the good part is that the tiredness from a bad night sleep in the tent doesn't feel that bad when you are out all day cycling :) Enjoy your time in Spain!

    • @WheelstoWander
      @WheelstoWander  2 роки тому

      Hé that's great! Did you also cycle that stretch in between the wetlands (with all the flamingo's)? A beautiful area...
      I can so relate to your sleep experiences... Whitenoise like the waves or a small stream definitely helps me sleep better. Or a camp location surrounded by nature, far from civilisation. I think part of it is also about acceptance, as you said it doesn't really matter when all you have to the next day is ride your bike and enjoy :-)

  • @marksadventures3889
    @marksadventures3889 2 роки тому

    Some really good camera shots there, very impressive. I am one of those annoying folk who can sleep on a clothes line, well I used to be; as I've got older it's less so, but out in the open air with a good dry night and crisp temperatures I'm good. A good air-pad is essential I use a generic pad with a foam under matt that has a reflective coating, keep my body heat with me and not letting it seep into the ground or visa versa with the damp ground. I use light sleeping bags with liners for summer or just the liner if it's really warm, but for winter I have an ex army arctic bag (goes to -40c) liner, bivvy bag etc. Sleep is a high priority for me if you do long rides or walks. PJ's for the night - saves wearing day clothes and getting them stinky but not in the summer. If it's not windy, cycling in my kilt is okay.
    Food is the other. If just going from my home for a night or two I make up food and freeze it, by the time I'm at camp it's just defrosting nicely. For longer summer trips i buy from Farmer's Markets - cheese, fruit, bread - no wine, fresh pressed fruit juices are okay though. I carry dried foods and soon my own make of dehydrated foods. 6 litres of water. And of course, leave no trace. I am now upgrading my clothing for better more usable stuff, Marino wools, cotton, wool socks, a lot of layers.

    • @WheelstoWander
      @WheelstoWander  2 роки тому

      All great tips Mark, thanks a lot! And lucky you, being able to sleep so easily... Like your suggestion of taking frozen meals for shorter trips, never thought about that! :-)

      Thanks Ron y Petra! Do you have any suggestions on places to visit in Spain, we plan on discovering a large part in different seasons...

    • @PedalPowerTouring
      @PedalPowerTouring 2 роки тому

      @@WheelstoWander , Yes Spain has a good variety of places to visit. When we rode from Madrid south we really enjoyed Cordoba with its unique Mezquita (Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba) and patios of flowers. Ronda was very nice and had some good hiking around, Toledo is a super cute town and then down Cadiz was very nice as well. All of these towns had very affordable campgrounds as well. We also liked the little white washed villages in the mountains in between. Unfortunately wild camping is a little bit tricky in this area, because most everything is fenced in, but it was still doable. We really love northern Spain, it is completely different from the south. It is green, hilly, foggy, and a little bit like Ireland, complete with folklore bag-pipe music. You can ride along the Camino de Santiago, there are several Pilgrim-routes you can chose from. If you want to stay in a pilgrim hostel, you will need the pilgrim passport that will get stamped. You might be able to get one of those in one of the churches along your way. It is a really neat experience to meet other pilgrims. We still have friends from our Camino ride in Santiago and Acoruna. The official Albergues (pilgrim hostels) are about 6 Euros to sleep in, the private ones are more expensive. Either way you can't go wrong, but it is cool to see how different the South and the North are. Enjoy and safe travels. Buenos viajes! Ron & Petra -- How long do you think you will be there for?

    hi guys - great to see you in Catalunya (not Spain), cuidao!
    Great video and editing.
    They are cork trees and the removal of the cork does not harm the tree, it renews every 9 years.
    the hunters are just as crazy in Spain so be careful.
    I hope you were sensitive to the Catalan vs Spain issue as it is a very hot potato!
    i sleep great in a tent (I have just moved onto hammock camping and I sleep even better). My tips -
    1) ear plugs
    2) eye mask
    3) a little vape (maria) before bed time.

I hadn't really thought about the boar hunting being a problem for camping but my cycling friends in Barcelona worry about them running out on them, especially in the evening and I have seen guys with walkie talkies out hunting them in the hills (but not drunk) I am planning South - North coast solo ride in April, mainly along the ruta de la plata which runs from Sevilla to Santiago - but I will head over the Picos for the Santander - Portsmouth Ferry - then back to London - always welcome to camp in my garden South of London Suburbia or even spare bedroom en suite? All campings were closed this time of year. We definitely prefer camping in nature, but we take the occasional camping or hostel to rest up a little :-)

    You asked about sleep.
    I have found these to contribute to better sleep (in no particular order),
    (1) Sufficient or more than sufficient, extra insulation, enough to feel warm and cozy.
    (2) a feeling of security, a safe place that also has that extra feeling of hitting the right note.
    (3) A warm and truly comfortable mattress or sleeping pad, one that goes beyond merely adequate.
    (4) Not eating too large a meal too close to going to sleep. Undigested or incompletely digested food disallows deep sleep. Active digestion system is connected to the brain and causes activities there.
    (5) For some people, being or feeling clean helps. Having everything in your surroundings and yourself clean and in order helps.
    (5) Just before going to sleep, it helps to go through your whole body, one section at a time, and systematically tense then relax each muscle and each area. Then relax back, as if relaxing back into a very comfortable chair, into the arms of Grace and the safety there. (Or, if some other words connect you with that better, then use those words, like Universal Love or Protection or Providence or the supporting ground of the infinite.)
    (6) Earplugs can also help. Certain soft foam earplugs are much more comfortable than most. Some of the formable waxy ones are also very comfortable. Of course, you don't want to use them if you are sleeping where you need to listen for dangers; but it's better to find safer places to sleep anyway.
    I find that good, effective, comfortable earplugs definitely add another level to the quality of sleep.
    (7) Staying away from internet activity and stimulating talk or reading for some time before sleep. Quiet harmony, nature, harmonious interactions with your partner, a sense of loving harmony are helpful in the evening hours before going to sleep.

      Thanks for the extended list, that's certainly helpfull! :-) I can relate to all of them... In practice I have to say it isn't always easy to stick to a strict & healty routine for a good night sleep, but most of the time we try to check all the boxes!

    You need an arm that fits to the bike handlebars for your camera, that way you're hands free. Impressive language skills there.

      Hi Mark, we have an actioncam mount but don't really like the quality. I'm not sure if there's a mount that can handle the weight of our mirorless camera's, never really looked into it. We try to reduce weight so there are some trade offs. Most of the time holding the camera works fine, but as English isn't our first language we ocassionally have to record 'vlogs' multiple times, and then it can get a littlebit heavy for the arms ;-)

I did know some Japanese but as they say if you don't use it you lose it. Bon chance mes ami.

    Sleeping lightly is a result of stress. You're in a foreign place every night, not your own bed, and this is disturbing and stressful. Once you make a decision on where to sleep, stand by your decision and tell yourself that "I am safe." Your brain does not know the difference. It listens to you. If you are spiritual, you can also ask Arch Angel Michael to offer his protection. The Devine will respond if asked! I do this in thunder or hail storms, etc, to protect myself and my car.

      Hi George, yes that's something we certainly try to do. Just like we're trying to find a camp location that feels safe and tucked away... But as you said, always being in a different location comes with a certain amount of stress which hasn't proven to be easy to let go off...
