  • Let me show you how to cook pinto beans. I've been cooking them for over 20 years and have learned from the BEST!!! It's so easy. After you watch this video be sure to check out my recipe for cornbread.
A lot of prep goes into cooking these delicious beans. Make sure you watch the video so that you'll know exactly HOW to master cooking this meal!
Over the years my recipe for pinto beans has gotten better and better and I've seasoned the pot many different ways. Check it out.
These are the EXACT measurements that I used in the video. Adjust according to the amount of beans you are cooking. Always season to taste.
    Large pot for cooking
10 Cups of soaked Pinto Beans
2 Smoked Turkey pieces (leg & wing)
13 Cups of Water (see note below)
    1/2 Yellow Onion
    6 Fresh Garlic cloves
    2 TBSP Oil
    2 TBSP Salt
    2 TBSP Cumin
    1 TBSP Paprika
    1 tsp Pepper
    1 tsp Sugar
    Green Onions (garnish)
Tomato Sauce (for color) Add only a little at a time until pot liquor turns reddish brown.
    *NOTE
If making a smaller amount of beans add just enough water to cover 1.5 - 2 inches above the beans. Season everything to taste. Cook beans 2.5 - 3 hours. Don't forget to soak.

Here in São Paulo, Brazil we make this type of bean almost every day, so here we go...
tips: 1- soak the beans overnight so they cook in 20 - 25 minutes, and become soft and juicy and soaking the beans helps to decrease the content of these oligosaccharides in the beans, preventing gas formation and abdominal discomfort. (Farts!)
2 - Spreading the beans on a flat surface helps to efficiently visualize and separate the broken and unwanted beans.
3 - submerging the beans in water makes the broken and not-so-good-for-eating beans float, making it even easier and more efficient to separate them.
    Love the content btw

If you’re making pinto beans and you’re vegan, a couple drops of liquid smoke works in a pinch. It doesn’t compete with a smoked ham hock or smoked turkey, but it will most certainly do in a pinch if you’re vegan and still want that smoky flavor.

Try pulling out a cup off bean then a cup of the beam soup put them into the same bowl and smash the beans up completely right back into the pot in mix it in i, it should mprove the flavor. you can try it in a personal bowl of beans to test it out . Smashing up some of the besns till it thickens up soup will change the flovor .

I have tried this recipe at least 3-times now, and it is absolutely RIGHT ON in terms of TASTE, TEXTURE, and COLOR!! THANK YOU sooo much for sharing it!
But, guess what??!! When I cook my beans now, I literally have NO, and I mean NO WHITE-SOOTY FOAM that forms over the top of the beans, because, I soak my beans now for 3-DAYS instead of OVERNIGHT!!!
I've picked up tips from my Mom, friends, and youtube on how to cook, but that is a tip I've learned from a friend!
I never would think to soak my beans for 3-DAYS, but I tried it, and after soaking them for three days, there is literally NO WHITE-SOOTY FOAM that forms over the top!!
    How about that!👏🏽🥘

Thank you very much for this recipe, ma’am. I bought a bag of these beans, having never had them before. They look nice on the shelf, and I’m hoping they’ll be good when I try them. Sure makes all the difference having a recipe that we tried for at least three generations of women.
By way of giving back, some people say that when you’ve had beans in storage for too long, they get hard and they’re hard to cook. This can be true. If you find some beans in the back of your lardour, and they’ve been back there a while, the trick is to just add a teaspoon of baking soda to the beans when you go to soak them, and they’ll soften up nicely. In the case that you’ve had that happen, it’s recommended that you hold off adding the salt until you’ve cooked the beans to the right consistency. After that, go ahead and add everything you want including the salt. Of course, that’s just for when the beans have been in storage a little extra long.

That looks so damn good, tummy starts to growl. Love pinto beans and cornbread. I love smoked ham neck bones but I think I'm gonna try the smoked turkey now too. I get to craving these things and nothing else will satisfy. I can remember eating this when I was four years old along with crumbled cornbread in a big tall cold glass of milk. My mom made skillet cornbread the old fashioned way and she cooked everything from scratch. Her beans and cornbread and her spaghetti and her fried chicken. You know how it is. So good. Keep up the good work.

I love Pinto beans. Always have been since being a little girl. My mother's ( birth, step, & foster), would cook Pinto beans with rice adding a meat & cornbread to complete a 4 course meal. Matter a fact, I love all different kind of beans there are ( except those big butter beans & those black beans) . I never could get those butter beans to taste right at all. I've always used a holiday leftover ham bone or a ham hock when cooking my beans but never turkey parts. Yes I have used turkey parts in freshed cooked greens but never for beans. So, I'm gonna have to try this recipe. Much as I love my different beans, I'm almost sure your recipe will be a hit to satisfy my hunger for a Pinto bean dinner night. Thank you for sharing your yummy recipes.

Thank you so much for sharing your family traditions with this! I needed a recipe that tastes like home and I think you have captured it! Also, I wonder if your grandmother might have used brown sugar or molasses in her beans. My grandmother did because many of her recipes were from the depression era and molasses was a cheap source of flavor. I watched her cook as a kid but many of her recipes were lost to me because I was the youngest grandchild and was getting older and not cooking much by the time I started to learn, so your cooking style really helped jog my memory.
