RIC was also quite affected by the death of Antoine Hubert and I remember him saying in an interview after Spa that he was basically asking himself if it's all worth it. That, along with Alonso-like luck when switching teams, time off, injury, and just the wear and tear of F1 has to add up to a less than preferred exit from the sport.
That's a good insight. There was a moment when Danny Ric started doing the smiley media stuff and I thought he's not fully there anymore. He's best out of it. Good luck to him. There's no need for all this media blubbing though. Push on.
And also Jules Bianchi, who was a friend of his. In one of the media pen interviews in Singapore, he mentioned something about not all drivers making it this far and looked a bit teary, and I wondered if he was referring to Jules.
Remember when he had a go at F1 for showing the Grosjean fireball crash? That right there made me think "you shouldn't be doing this if that's how you feel about it," his performances have borne that out.
It can be used correctly in 2 ways: If he thinks Eddie is not so great then "they broke the mould when they made him" is correct but in general the expression is "...after they made him" because there can never be another - for good or bad (personally I think he's great!)
I wish I understood why Red Bull handled Danny’s leaving so poorly. They should have had an immediate statement instead of leaving everything in the air leaving everyone to speculate. I find that very distasteful and unprofessional of them.
Good episode and Alex your enthusiasm for our sport is infectious. DC when Daniel gets over the rejection am sure he would be a good addition to the whisper team. Much loved.
Liam’s already proved his mettle in F1. He’s now got the chance to put a season together and see if he can show up his more experienced teammate. I think he just might. He might not, but I’d love to see it.
I also wonder what on earth happened to DR at Mclaren. From the onboard footage / pedal cam of the Mclaren in recent years it looks like the brake has a lot more travel than you would expect. I wonder if something technical like that could have played into his sudden inconsistency as CH talked about bad habits he picked up and theoretically speaking from someone that only knows sim racing and track days, it might make sense why Mclaren hold an advantage through mid corner in this gen.
Eddie's gone to order a bigger boat than Adrian's. It's really strange what's happened to Daniel. Sure you see people loose speed as they get older, but not like this. In the words of Austin Powers "Crikey, I've lost my mojo!"
Just watched the 2003 season on F1TV .David Coulthard could have easily won an F1 championship had it not been for some unfortunate breakdowns etc. No diss on Ron Dennis. Ron is a genius. Push on.
I believe Ricciardo was mentally burnt out when he left RB for Renault in 2018. In interviews at the time, there was something that seemed "lost" despite his usual gregariousness. If Ricciardo's mental health has suffered, I hope he can heal with some time out of the limelight and return to racing, whether in a media role or another series. The fans adore him.
Alex is the best!!!! He and DC are the best combination for f1 commentary. He is not biased and gives fair commentary whether it is positive or negative. Oh and he brings it with excitement…nice to watch f1 with his commentary.👏👏👏
How ironical it was that it was Piastri, the driver that replaced him at Mclaren, who had hit the wall and DR had to avoid him and instead chose to hit the wall himself. That injury and absence certainly did not help his comeback. But to be real, he had lost that edge and the car did not allow his late overtaking style to reappear. But he certainly deserved a better send off by RB. The fan backlash in Melbourne next year will be very interesting as there is a lot of heat down under about the poor handling of his exit.
My take on Liam's strengths and weaknesses as someone who has followed his career closely since his first F2 season: Firstly, I agree that his biggest strength is his adaptability. As far as racecraft goes, he is excellent in defence, close/wheel-to-wheel racing, has performed some amazing overtakes, and is pretty good at tyre management. As for weaknesses, I think his biggest letdown (aside from luck) has been qualifying. There's a reason he had a bunch of sprint wins but none in feature races in F2 and that's because he almost always qualified roughly 4th-8th which put him in a great spot for the reverse top ten sprint races but not the features. He would most often move several spots up the order but always had too far to go. Similar in Super Formula. Only one pole position but several race wins. If he can sort that out, I think he'll do very well.
Ricciardio was in the Toro Rosso or whatever it's called in case Perez fell through. Now that they've figured out that Perez was actually on to something, or they reached the limit of this car without making it undrivable... There's no place for Ricciardo with Liam Lawson - I don't think it comes down to DR losing anything, it's just they need a place for Liam and Yuki is at the same pace as DR. I haven't watched the full interview, but I think it's important to remember how fast this sport can change. Back in 2019, 2020 it was Nico Hulkenberg getting shown up by DR eventually leaving and coming back. The only difference is that he hasn't got anything lined up and there's more interest in young talent. Hopefully he gets Abu Dhabi to say goodbye in the short term.
I felt the same way. I felt that the red bull car was slowly but surely going to this cliff that they fell off and Checo has been repeatedly telling them about it but now it's too late. Which also is a testament to how good Max is being able to drive around the problems of the car and still achieve results. And to think that Checo is pulling a midfield result out of a car that's so undriveable is actually a commendation. I don't think Danny with how much he's dropped off since leaving Renault would even be able to get into Q3.
No way David Coulthard was at Three Sisters!! That’s the closest outdoor kart track to me I think. We did a four hour endurance kart race there a few years back, in winter. Started in daylight, ended in the dark. Cold, damp. Was an absolutely amazing afternoon/evening. We had a such a laugh there!
First comment. Wow! I feel for Danny Ric. He was quick at Red Bull and I think Renault he peaked. I really like him but I feel that as a driver he could not adapt to the new formula and for me a top driver in F1 must be able to do that as David said. It is however a real shame that RB could not do a proper sendoff for an academy driver of theirs that was a multiple GP winner. RB can be so heartless sometimes with their own investments.
Danny Ric lost his seat but never announced his retirement, But F1 as a sport started to retire in him from the sport. They did him wrong for headlines
I don’t think it would hurt Daniel to go to LM series much the same as Valentino Rossi did, I reckon he would have fun and they’re aren’t too many races so there’s plenty of time for family too.
It's bizarre that people throw out their opinions on Daniel's ability without even watching what went on at the team, his inconsistency wasn't his driving but things outside his control in 18/25 races and that includes issues through practice and quali, we all know how bad some of the race strats were. Qualifying P5 and P4 twice in that rubbish car shows he still belongs on the grid.

No . According to every pundit , ex driver , ex owner etc etc all you ever hear is F1 is a brutal , cut throat business . Being a good guy shouldn't mean he gets treated any differently . His performances haven't been anywhere near good enough , so a decision was taken . Could the process have been handled in a more professional way .. for sure . But the harsh reality is DR wasn't cutting it anymore . He isn't the first " nice guy " to be shown the exit & he won't be the last . No doubt he will go away , lick his wounds & be behind the wheel in some form of motorsport in the future . Good luck to him 🤞🏻
The harsh reality is that he wouldn't have been dropped mid-season if Lawson didn't have a strong contract. His performances have little to do with that; I bet it was just cheaper to buy him out than Perez.
@@Tjescoosorry but i disagree . Listen to the ex pros .. Drivers are judged on their performance on track & DR lost his mojo a good while ago . As for Perez maybe its because of the sponorship he brings to Red Bull or because MV likes him who knows , but i'm surprised he is still there .✌🏻
@@Melbourne-s4xits not my criteria .. that is the way in F1 . Points are everything for the team & if you aren't performing you are normally gone . Tsunoda & Zhou are probably hanging on to their seats because F1 needs to keep their respective home fans / nations engaged in the sport . Bottas is another who is less than impressive after a respectable career & should be out . But the most obvious is nepo baby Stroll , but i'm not sure his father has the b&lls .. yet !! F1 is always about the next young gun & if a driver isn't keeping the car out of the barriers or finishing in the top ten on a regular basis they are usually looking over their shoulder at who is waiting in the wings . DC & EJ talk about this stuff constantly .
Ricciardo was only dropped mid-season because of Lawson's contract and they didn't want to lose him to another team. Too bad Red Bull is so opaque about it. It's nearly as bad as them ignoring the existence of Japan.
It's not up to DR to make an announcement he was finishing. It should have first been announced by RB. Instead, DR was left to answer questions from numerous repotters while RB remained silent. It was cruel by RB and a pathetic handling of a fan favourites exit.
13:44 iirc from what Christian said on the F1 Nation podcast Danny was told it was ~probably~ his last race but not that it was explicitly his last race; he wasn’t told that he was for sure done until after the race 🥲
Exactly. Singapore showed off some impressive skills, especially his composure under pressure after Checo Perez dive-bombed him on the inside of a turn. The Sky commentary team didn't even notice that Checo lost his front wing endplate in that encounter, but Liam showed no sign of being disconcerted by it and drove on like a seasoned professional.
Personally I think he made a big mistake leaving Red Bull but he got himself in a headspace where he thought he was as good or better than Max and couldn't accept not being the primary. If he could have got his head around that he might well have been the better teammate to Max than those that followed imho
alonso and sainz also failed at Mclaren yet didn't get any hassles from anyone like Ricciardo did , and lando was there 5 years before a race win yet dan did win
@DC, when you're in Johannesburg for the RedBull show run this weekend (or anytime you're in South Africa), if you have an opportunity please come past Red-Lined Motorsport Adventure in Kyalami. We are a FIA T1+ Rally Raid manufacturer. I'd love to show you around the vehicles and facility👍🏼
Im an Aussie, but Danny Ric has had plenty of time to show results, and it just hasnt happened. Maybe he should come home to our V8 Supercars. Im sure there will be lots of opportunities for him. Plus, his personality would be a nice windfall for the V8's 🇦🇺 🏁
NASCAR is a good series for him. Automatically a good favorite for the road courses along with SVG, ovals will take a bit longer to get up to speed but he's good as any new driver getting into it for the first time, everything will feel like slow motion for him.
Say what you like about Ricciardo's performance after leaving Red Bull, he didn't deserve that pathetic treatment he got from them at the end. Not even a cake with a boot on top to give a final shoeee as a toast to his contribution to the team. Who cares if Horner and Marco didn't show up. I'm sure a lot of other drivers would have been there to wish him farewell.
Easily the best F1 podcast. Guys with a bit of charisma and actual current involvement in the sport. Seeing all these talking head fan-turn-pundit types gets tiresome. None of them ever know anything. It's always 5 minutes of content of them guessing stuff based on something they read from another know nothing talking head and stretched out into 20-30 minutes of boredom. Keep up the good work lads.
Great episode guys. I do wonder why there’s no discussion about the role of the race engineer in the failure of a F1 driver? Pierre Hamelin has been with RB for 10 odd years and has only one race win to his credit (Gasley in 2020). Yes the car has never been a top 3 but at times its been pretty good? Plus if Hamelin was very good he would have been promoted to Red Bull or picked up by another team? The drivers go and he stays…now he’s engineering Lawson? Surely they need to give someone else a chance?
Where was the public outcry when Daniel Ricciardo was so unceremoniously dumped by the Great Papaya Ruler in 2022? The Money Badger has done quite well for himself and we wish him the best of luck for his future endeavours... one of which may well be yet another Formula 1 comeback in 2025 (Christian Horner hinted as much on the latest F1 Nation podcast).
Really surprised no one has mentioned or had the theory that since ground effects came in Danny Rick has struggled. Maybe his driving style doesn't suit the ground effects areo? Let's be honest he was very close to Max in Red Bull. He had Estabans measure at Renault. He has Hulks measure at Renault. Then he went to McLaren did ok in first year then the ground effects came out and in his second year and then had not the greatest results ever since. I just don't think his driving style suits the new spec cars. Either that or he has a hidden injury that limits his ability to handle g forces.
@@parkmia1752 the point is, he's not far off Yuki in a car which has consistently been on the decline mid to late season for the last 4 years. They expect top 5 finishes to be the evidence of worthiness in a car that's only worthy of 15-10th each week. The whole 3/4 season removal is dumb
@@IsaacSturdee “not being far off Yuki” is not good enough. DR was only given a chance to see whether he could replace Checo. The moment he failed to confidently beat Yuki, there was no point in keeping him around. They will always pick a younger driver with higher upside than an old and declining driver for the VCARB seat. And even in the past 10 races, Yuki has had the upper hand in qualifying H2H. The race results aren’t too representative of their actual performance given the numerous DNFs and terrible strategies on both sides.

@@Tjescoosorry but i disagree . Listen to the ex pros .. Drivers are judged on their performance on track & DR lost his mojo a good while ago . As for Perez maybe its because of the sponorship he brings to Red Bull or because MV likes him who knows , but i'm surprised he is still there .✌🏻
So Tsunoda goes too, using your criteria?
@@Melbourne-s4xhow are you doing mate?
Other pundits reckon DR is not the latest of the late brakers except for his tremendous overtaking moves
“‘Deserve’ ‘s got nothin’ to do with it”
Sorry EJ, Alex is a much much better wing man! More of this!
He knew he was not going to have a drive after Signapore.
I love your podcast, thx.
Ricciardo was only dropped mid-season because of Lawson's contract and they didn't want to lose him to another team. Too bad Red Bull is so opaque about it. It's nearly as bad as them ignoring the existence of Japan.
David, put your headphones on the right way!
It's not up to DR to make an announcement he was finishing. It should have first been announced by RB. Instead, DR was left to answer questions from numerous repotters while RB remained silent. It was cruel by RB and a pathetic handling of a fan favourites exit.
I will b happy once this drama is no longer. No one needs to cry for a driver that has only looked out for his own finances.
The McLaren move was his only wrong move. Went against the "factory" driver mantra F1 is about.
I'm sure the $3.5million bonus will keep Danny warmer than the rest of us.
13:44 iirc from what Christian said on the F1 Nation podcast Danny was told it was ~probably~ his last race but not that it was explicitly his last race; he wasn’t told that he was for sure done until after the race 🥲
DC, re Lawson F1 impressive performances, did you not see Suzuka and Singapore?
Horner left door open in last interview if Checo and Lawson don't perform at end of season both seats not secured for 2025 at Redbull and Vcarb...
if anything yuki needs to go to the Ateam!!!
I just hope people don't expect him to win in that series or be anywhere close to the regulars... because he won't be
Or in the WEC series.
V8's have been over for a while bro
NASCAR is a good series for him. Automatically a good favorite for the road courses along with SVG, ovals will take a bit longer to get up to speed but he's good as any new driver getting into it for the first time, everything will feel like slow motion for him.
I truly beleive he was injured in some way by ... The thing.
I think leaving Red Bull and competing against Max took the edge off Dani Ric. And perhaps also, money and fame?
RB are scrambling to find a place for him in the RB family outside of driving because they mite lose the sponsors he brought to Vcarb
Seems to me like DC is incredibly jealous of the popularity Ricciardo has
Great f1 podcast
EJ got replaced for the ep by AJ
Great episode guys. I do wonder why there’s no discussion about the role of the race engineer in the failure of a F1 driver? Pierre Hamelin has been with RB for 10 odd years and has only one race win to his credit (Gasley in 2020). Yes the car has never been a top 3 but at times its been pretty good? Plus if Hamelin was very good he would have been promoted to Red Bull or picked up by another team? The drivers go and he stays…now he’s engineering Lawson? Surely they need to give someone else a chance?
The Daniel choice makes no sense... if he matches Yuki... he is Yuki, but with a far more marketable persona. Why not drop Yuki?
DC would the RB20 for Daniel make any difference?
Where was the public outcry when Daniel Ricciardo was so unceremoniously dumped by the Great Papaya Ruler in 2022?
The Money Badger has done quite well for himself and we wish him the best of luck for his future endeavours... one of which may well be yet another Formula 1 comeback in 2025 (Christian Horner hinted as much on the latest F1 Nation podcast).
Can you find out if the rumour of Eddie driving his new Aston Martin Vantage as Bernd's stand in are true? 🙃
DR dropped RB in 2018. What goes around, comes around.
I miss the EJit.
Why do the British call him Danny ?
30:00 Why are they stepping on The Red Flags podcast thing here?
Arn’t all drivers who get replaced upset?
never was, never will be a world champion.... wasnt delivering... now another young man can have a go.
DR literally beat Yuki on average over the 10 races prior to Singapore
nope
Insane cherry picking the championship didn't start 10 races ago
Question: has Red Bull lost their edge?
Danny Ric got an extra year and half farewell tour after RB picked him up when no one else wanted him. That extra time was a gift.
Couthhard spreading rumours on behalf of RBR at 0:01 continuing their damage control. It's pathetic.
ricardo was there just for the money he didnt want to be a WC, thats why he left Red bull he could have been fighting Max for the championship but he walked away a sissy really!!!
He had plenty of chances really, more than most. Mclaren gave him plenty of chances, really if Ron Dennis was in charge in 2021, he would have sacked Daniel after lando lapped him at the monaco gp. Redbull took him back and gave plenty of time to him but has shown absolutely nothing.
Poor yuki though they stick everyone in that car to beat him. But he showing everyone up why he not in the conversation to red bull
Too crash prone and hot headed, we’ll see if he matures and if he hangs around after honda sponsorship dries up
@@jamie0193 but he has and that's what people not seeing he just put Danial to the scrap heap from his driving. We have not heard yuki on the radio once this year
@@Carl-s4iI guess he’s not said anything bad then if we haven’t heard his radio on tv
@@Carl-s4ihe definitely didn’t call another driver the r-word(can’t write it or my comment won’t show up) and get a 40k fine Austria , or have a bust up with Danny at Bahrain
@@jamie0193 you know they would air it if he did. Gasley made him grow up alot . He has out done 2 drivers that's spose to be that good. And now someone else has to beat him. What's gonna happen if he gets tge hattrick of great drivers
Ricciardo was given an extra life by Horner/Marko like no other driver has been given… he wasted it and had a chance to go out on his own terms and chose pity over grace. I have no sympathy for him, his “larger than life charm” branded by the media took away chances from other young talented drivers… I welcome Liam.
What a load of uneducated gibberish!!
Get back in your box and keep eating your crayons.
Like no other driver has been given...
... the guy that won all of his races since the last time Alonso won his.
The guy that shares a grid with Zhou, Magnussen, Stroll, Bottas....
... shut up.
