Mr. Whitaker actually captained the Cambridge A team to victory at the 2024 UK Student Quiz championships (coincidentally beating Justin Lee, Adam Jones and Michael Mays from Imperial College London in the final), and after that fantabulous display of 11! starters-for-ten, I can see why he did ;). Shame for Birkbeck - they all got at least one right but we won't be seeing them again. I do worry for the future for Darwin - it's not an exaggeration to say pretty much all the points (including the 19/32 bonus rate) came from Mr. Whitaker and I don't like one-man bands as a rule, but we'll have to see.
Almost a one man show from Whitaker...great breadth of knowledge and quick off the mark. Not a lot of contribution from a few members of both teams. Well done to Darwin! Thanks CP!
Haven't finished watching yet, but Birkbeck seem like a really lovely team. The way they interact with each other is respectful without being stiff; casual and friendly while also being calm and respectful.
I don't think I have ever seen someone answering all the starters for their team. If we follow S51, Whitaker can be a one-man team and lead them to the finals.
The Quizbowl winner this year had starter points all to himself‼︎ Honestly I doubted that at a moment when I took the statistics to write the match stats.
Bit embarrassing for his teammates. They all looked a bit sheepish at the end. Hope they'll put in a better performance next time. Obviously, now that UC has gone so 'woke' there was no way in his game summary that Amol was going to make any mention of the team basically being a one-man band!

CP: Thank you so much for this! You rule (my Tuesday mornings)! Whitake had his hands full carrying his team. Also, the lack of science questions probably played into his (full) hands. Let's see what the next round brings for him. His teammates were pretty disappointing. Birkbeck produced much more of a team effort, but they looked a bit lethargic at times.
Almost jumped out of my chair in delight at hearing Autumn Almanac. Had they answered with McCartney I think a small piece of my soul would have died :')
Hello again! The is was a very good match between two teams that were nearly equal in talent. That said, it was apparent that the winning team would prevail fairly early. At least to me. The captain of the winning team was just too quick, and too knowledgeable for the losing team to counter. And so we have seen the last of them. My best to both teams, and to each individual.
Ha ha, do seriously not believe it is their university studies that helps the contestants but chiefly the schooling they had, which enabled them to go to university.
As usual, someone, somewhere is always shouting an answer... here: WHITE!!! as soon as I hear "Leukocytes", but that's just because I'm a Veterinarian. xD

I was sorta rooting for the two older players, who did make a contribution. Leave the gun. Take the cannoli. 😆

I noticed there are generally less women who take part in UC, and many times also less contribution from them. Does anyone have an explanation for this? Am very puzzled - are males generally better at quizzes or like them more?
Many studies have shown that women are less likely to speak their mind/have more doubts about doing so in moments like this (which may be critical in a quiz setting). Partially because of societal conditioning (e.g., records of how in scientific conferences, during Q&As, men are disproportionately more likely to be given the spot to ask questions, etc.). Partially because of e.g., how women's vs men's dopamine short-circuiting works. But anecdotally I would say the former is a strong driver behind what you're asking.
I watch this show to learn and I really hate it when some ill attitude takes away from the learning. The team from Birkbeck could be more united, and regard your team mate maybe a little more. Acting surprise when an answer given to you was correct like you expected it be wrong.... That as just disgusting
don't want to be mean, but quizzes really aren't for older people. One very knowledgeable one might help on bonuses... but two at the same time don't help, in my opinion
I think it is more of an individual thing. Sometimes older people can be a half a second behind. But, they have more knowledge and more time to collect it. I think the biggest problem for any contestant on UC is retrieving what they know.
Ah, the agist faction weighs in again on UC, never, ever wanting to be mean. The old codger certainly saved their asses (arses) on the oh-so-appropriate category of autumn songs.
