Great video, Kevin, a fun watch while I'm watching snow fall outside the window (Maryland). I especially enjoyed watching you prep your firewood...I learned some stuff about making fire in damp conditions. Your meal looked great! Good stuff, really entertaining 👍
Thank you so so much my friend. Glad I could give you some tips and tricks. It's about time we get some snow! It's dumping out here right now! Have a wonderful week brother.
Just outstanding ! Great effort on this, aquaquest is a very solid company. I have a dry bag and a tarp from them. You did this right. The wood prep, the explanation on being patient when building a fire is so important. I love tarp camping ! Again, well done man. I know what it takes to offer up a video when you are out in the elements. It’s not easy. You deserve way more subscribers. , cheers !
You nailed it brother, the weather is a real challenge when filming. If I can, I like to leave a few tips as I film. Knowing full well that most of my subs are experienced outdoorsmen/women. It makes that job tough as well. Yeah, my subscriber count is low? Not sure why but I'll just keep plugging along. Thanks again for watching my friend. Means a lot. Find me on Facebook, Kevin The Wandering Woodchuck.
@@kevinthewanderingwoodchuck2586 Well said, I used the book of faces for a short time a few years ago. Maybe I will give it another try, I found I didn’t have the time. Have a great week man !
I was gonna say bear, I thought the tracks looked large but I don't know very much about the woods. Learning! Awesome bushcraft set up! love the ridge line and made wood pegs and stakes! Bivy set up is so cool!!! have to say, 20 degrees, wet, snow, Vermont woods! That's pretty hardcore! hahaha! I would probably need a wall tent with a wood stove, hahaha (I'm a weak flatlander-hahaha) Also, I have to comment, frying the burrito is next level camp cuisine! no one else does it! I just started doing it at home and it is waaaay better! I wanted to mention, we are not allowed to wilderness camp down here in Southern New England/southeastern CT/RI . The state land requires camping only in designated campsites which are only open April-October unfortunately. I was thinking about lobbying the state DEEP to maybe create a "wilderness camping permit" that residents could apply for , for I'm not holding out much hope. We have to go North for that kind of thing! Thx as always for your thoughtful and informative content and Happy New Year Monsieur Kevin!
That's unfortunate that you can't camp on state owned land. As long as you are 100 ft from any water, 200 ft from any trailhead or property line and 1000 ft from a roadway you are good to go here in Vermont. The only place that is restricted to camp is above 2500 ft. Good luck on trying to get a permit process in place. Sounds like a good idea! Thanks for watching, hope to see you next time.
Hi Kevin, looks like you've got the bushcraft camping in soggy conditions dialed in quite nicely, man; no easy feat in cold, wet Vermont, right? Aqua Quest makes darn good stuff! Luv their Safari 10X10 tarp, and used mine at Stannard Pond in Steam Mill Brook with very satisfactory results. Thanks, as always, for taking us along. Wishing you a safe and adventure filled 2024! 🐀
It was named New England for a reason, all the wet weather like their home across the pond. Wet weather gear is a must here. Give this new bivy a try. It's awesome. Have a wonderful, prosperous and adventure filled year my friend.
Looked like a great overnight!! I just got back today from a two night on the Little Manistee River here in Michigan. We have ZERO snow, hoping we get some soon!! Thanks for the tip with the saw on shorter pieces!! Stay safe!!
The snow situation has been tough for all of us here in the north. Hope you get a good old fashioned snow storm soon my friend. Fortunately, we are getting hit this weekend with about 6" of snow in the valley, 12" in the mountains. It's about time! Best wishes and thanks for watching.
Great overnight. Your meals always look really good. Slick little feather stick trick. Porcupine 👍🏻 Was going to guess mink or fox but then again not much of a tracker.
I love to spoil myself with tasty food while camping. I can't take credit though, my wife is a tremendous cook. I've learned by watching her! Glad you enjoyed it. Hope to see you on the next one. Best wishes.
It truly is. My biggest concern was condensation. I thought for sure my sleeping bag would have been damp in the morning. It wasn't, it was bone dry! Pick one up, you won't be disappointed.
I have that bivy also. Have only used it once but I could definitely tell it added some warmth to my sleep system. Also have 3 of their tarp. Solid gear!
Kevin, nice video brother. I liked and subscribed. Yeah, people go beserk when the grounds are wet but if ya can get ahold of a vertical dead standing your good to go. Most water will penetrate is about an 1/8 of an inch. So the wood is dry in the center. Gotta love fatwood. That is my favorite fatwood and birch bark. I just learned that the inner bark of cottonwood makes great tinder. Tried it too. Takes a spark really well very close to tulip poplar. I was wondering where the tarp was from. I thought perhaps Bushcraft Spain. I am juat to the west of Vermont. New York. Grew up outside the Adirondacks. I have the aquaquest bivy on my wish list. You sold me on it. Was worried about the condensation issue. Glad you got some snow. I look forward to your next video. Ya know, once ya start a fire with flint and steel, it is hard to go back to another method. Lol. Great job. I k ow making videos is time consuming and a lot effort is given. Thanks for your time. I enjoyed watching it.
I love the Adirondacks! Chech out my Oswegatchie river trip series. We had a great time over there. Beautiful. The tarp is from Tentsmiths, a company in NH. They specialize in period correct replicas of historic tents. Very cool place. I will attach the link below. So glad you enjoyed my video. And yes, editing takes forever!! Hope to see you on the next one. Best wishes!
Nice video Kevin. As you stated, wood preparation is everything for a successful fire. I think I would have preferred to use a hatchet to split all the wood, but you did a great job with the knife. You are more patient than me. As far as the porcupine, don’t Vermonters usually call them hedgehogs? At least that’s what my VT friend calls them. Thanks for sharing.
Close in size my friend! It was a porcupine. I mentioned it at the very end of the video. Any closer and he would have been in my sleeping bag with me! Hope you have a great week. Thanks for watching!
Great video you showcased several pieces of gear i want to add to my gear, the swing grill and bivy and even the little tripod chair all neat stuff i have a tentsmith tarp but found it too heavy to lug around soi use it in a semi permanant camp
Thanks for watching brother! Yeah, it is a very heavy tarp for sure. I only pack it in on small trips. I have a ultralight tarp I use for getting way back into the mountains. The "swing arm cooker" also known as the bedroll cooker is from Self reliance outfitters. The seat was hand made from a good friend. I may be giving one away soon in an upcoming video. Have fun out there! Best wishes.
Hello! I lived by Killington in the 90s. Snowmobiled all over central VT and the North East Kingdom. Still have a good friend in Woodstock. Love the place and miss it. Where are you? I hope you got the snow that just fell
I'm in Central Vermont. Not far from Montpelier. We did get a bunch of snow today! About 12-14 inches or so! It's about time. Thanks for watching my friend. Best wishes.
I was only about 2 miles in. And yes, it was heavy gear. Definitely not for backpacking. I do love using traditional gear when I can for bushcraft. It just feels good using it if that makes any sense. Best wishes and thanks so much for watching my friend.
Great job on the videos, very well done! As someone in my 50s, I tend to plan short trips, 2-3 miles, mostly for overnight backcountry fly fishing. Also not a gram counter myself.@@kevinthewanderingwoodchuck2586
