    Why we watch Louis Rossman:
    - His refreshing honesty about how Apple laptops (and occasionally other devices) often have easy fixes, but the consumer gets screwed over due to greed, laziness, and incompetence.
    - The way he uses this same "consumer advocate perspective" more generally to apply to right-to-repair, exploitation of small business, exorbitantly high-priced real estate, and so on.
    Very few people who watch him actually have the technical skills to repair their own devices or an interest in learning how to do so. We just all respect his skill and his integrity.

    Louis, I've been subscribed to you for a long time but possibly first time I've commented. I gotta say I love when you do board repairs, really of any length. Not only do I love seeing you show off your technical skills (as someone who builds PCs and helps his friends replace screens and odds and ends on their older iPhones or RAM/HDD on their laptops what you do might as well be sorcery/alchemy) but you've got a great presenter voice that I love listening to while I'm at work. Heck I'd watch you replace a home button on an iPhone! The other topics you discuss like real estate or Right to Repair are icing on the cake as well. Keep it up brother!

    You can see the the hole where the screw should've been, right below the track pad connector.
    I've opened A LOT of macbooks where there's a screw rattling around, they come loose after not being torqued properly.

    • @CtrlAltRetreat
      @CtrlAltRetreat 2 роки тому +3

      This. Please try to give them the benefit of the doubt as they might honestly not have been responsible for this. If they say they had nothing to do with the screw, you still fixed the MacBook for them and you might be able to still help them.

    Same problems occur with vehicle repairs. Once the obvious problem is sorted, we then have to ask why someone was there in the first place. Then the denials and stories come out.
    I was wondering, is there a screwhole missing a screw, or did someone add another screw from their stock? An extra screw says definitely someone has been there before, but a mislocated screw could have become loose and travelled until it fell in a hole. You plucked it out with tweezers, so that suggests that no-one tried to screw it in.

    Louis, I know how that screw got there, it fell off of his screw driver and couldn’t find it, then he tried bring it up and it died. Since he couldn’t find that screw, it ended up in your shop. Being a self servicer I had my macbook apart several times doing upgrades. Mine both work, but way past their prime an 2009 and a 2010. I was a Customer Engineer for IBM and the systems I worked on are now in museums 360/20 thru AS 400. More complicated than today’s pc’s and mac’s, 25 books of logic circuits and required to know how to do microcode and program the system using the dials on the computer in hexadecimal. I admire your ability to fix those mac’s and make the customers happy again.

    I have only a fleeting interest in board repair. At 74, I have better things to do. I got my feet wet early though.
    At 14, I lusted after a Harmon Karden Stereo “integrated” amplifier kit (25 w/channel) that sat in a hifi store window. I had enough $ saved from my paper route that I bought it. I had no tools, very little knowledge and no one to learn from (no yooboob) so the store allowed me to work above the store after school. I was in heaven. The damn thing worked first time, but with a hum for which the manufacturer had to send a correction. After that I built many Heathkits for folks. I built their top o the line stereo, even their guitar amp and clock radio. Fun times. My career ended up in Meteorology at a desk! Great career though! Anyway, I'm here to get a glimpse of a New York minute, and to learn and support RtRepair. I just watched a dude take down the appliance manufacturers for their vulnerable electronics. You're lucky ro get a few years out of them before you have to replace a control unit…last time, our dishwasher unit failed..$400. Good luck..you're doing great.

    Is that a screw hole beneath the trackpad connector, or is that a filled hole with a snapped off screw head that floated to where you found it? My inquiring eyes want to know.

    Huh, and here I was expecting a long screw issue with that title.....
    Then I was like wait...
    Is that a screw in a connector?! XD

    Very odd, it looks as if it was one of the pentalobe screws too? Most users don't have those driver bits unless they're already the sort of individual who wants to open a more recent MacBook. Maybe I am just weird, but my experience is that very few individuals are the sorts to take it upon themselves to do that unless they already have at least some idea of what they are doing (e.g. maybe they know they want to upgrade the SSD. There is not too much in those which is a simple user upgrade).
    My first guess wouldn't even be the end user, but maybe something happened at the factory depositing an errant screw in the chassis and it just got knocked into that position through some jostling? At least it seems as if it was a relatively simple fix!

    My 2017 iPad Pro 12.9 , so not too much older, died suddenly. Apple (Genius) told me they would not repair and the genius did not know what the problem was. As there is only screen exchange places hare in LA, I sent it to iPad rehab in NY. Unfortunately they could not figure out what was wrong and I had them send it back at my expense, so that I can use it as decoration.

    Well, SPI is not an Apple-specific term. Most Intel documentation for newer Intel CPUs who uses an EFI-based firmware calls the initial loader an SPI.

    • @nicholasvinen
      @nicholasvinen 2 роки тому +1

      SPI stands for serial peripheral interface which is a communication protocol used to get data into and out of the flash chip. It does not say anything about what the chip actually does. I would describe it as a bootloader personally.

    The thing is, it was just loose in there, so it could have been a forgotten screw that just fell inside there.. it doesnt mean they put it there, so it wouldnt be surprising if they claimed they didnt try to put a screw in the connector. That being said, it does point to someone opening it in the first place.

    I want to open a business, but I'm worried about rent and bills. I feel intimidated by the idea of having to earn enough to pay them before I can think of paying myself. Is there any tips? I assume all rent and bills is tax deductible or am I wrong on that? Anything I'm missing that would help?

    If I am all honest, then:
    I don't watch many of your repair videos, especially not the long ones. I do have a small interest in the different ways devices break, so I sometimes watch small videos like this one (so less interested in repairs and more in diagnosis).
    I don't really watch the real estate videos any more, as the message is already clear; real estate in NY is a joke.
    I am interested in any updates on RTR, Apple or other tech related news, so I watch all of them.
    Did I miss anithing?
    PS. I wont contribute to the negative subs on repair videos ;)
