Part Two of a three part series from our 35 day trek through the Nepal Himalaya. In part one we trekked the Manaslu Circuit ( • Manaslu Circuit Trek, ... ) from Arughat to Dharapani, where we join the Annapurna Circuit at the start of this video.
The Annapurna Circuit is a classic multi-day Nepal trek, traditionally starting in Besisahar, crossing the 5416m Thorong La, and ending around 3 weeks later in Beni, Nayapul or Phedi. In this video we trek from Dharapani to Kagbeni, where we join the Upper Mustang trek (part 3 - • Upper Mustang Trek, Nepal ).
After a bit too much trekking on roads for our liking between Dharapani and Dhukur Pokhari, the Annapurna Circuit really starts to WOW us from Upper Pisang all the way to Kagbeni. Keen to avoid the road, we take the New Annapurna Trekking Trails (NATT) via Ghyaru and Ngawal on the way to Manang, one of the most spectacular sections of the trek. After a freezing cold morning crossing the Thorong La (-11 degrees plus extreme wind chill!), we continue on the NATT trail from Muktinath to Kagbeni via the Sakya Buddhist villages of Chongur, Jhong and Putak, another highlight of the Annapurna Circuit for us.
Reaching Kagbeni, we find ourselves smitten with this wonderfully atmospheric medieval village, at the crossroads of four historic trade routes and picturesquely sat on the banks of the mighty Kali Gandaki river.

Part two of our three part Nepal trekking series. Hope you enjoy!
Thanks for the two videos so far. I had to choice between Annapurna or Manaslu. Glad to hear you liked Manaslu more.
@@lukasf.1381 you're very welcome. We do like the Annapurna Circuit but Manaslu definitely comes out on top for us.
@@lukasf.1381 We went Manaslu - Naar-Pho - AC over Tilicho - ABC in 2009. Naar-Pho is amazing, just next to the too popular AC, now overrun by the Nepalis.
Criminally underrated channel, possibly one of the best travel channels on UA-cam.
: ))) Thanks Jason, what a wonderful compliment! Really glad you're enjoying the videos and thanks for watching and appreciating our work. Cheers, Kim
Every Nepali should watch this video . what we have to change to make our pahuna ( gest) happy love from Nepal
It would certainly be great to see improvement of infrastructure for local communities (like roads) go hand in hand with development of alternative trekking trails in order to keep the trekking industry alive. Thanks for watching : )
Thank you for your fantastic Nepal videos. How inspiring and informative. Exactly what I needed. Been up to Muktinath but never did pass 4.000 m of altitude. After watching your videos I decided to do the passes (at Manaslu & Annapurna). 2022 I will be there. Did I tell you it is fun watching you two? Authentic and grounded. You are a great couple. All the best and happy trekking. Cheers, Marcel
Thanks Marcel! So good to hear you've decided to trek the passes next year. We're glad you enjoyed the videos and greatly appreciate you watching : ) Cheers! Kim
1:45 drybag washing machine - genius. Never thought of that , great tip thank you ! My mate and I had talked about the Annapurna circuit but were concerned by the, now, road rather than trail walking so considering the Manaslu trek instead. I see from 19:00 you preferred the manaslu trek. Thank you.
Ha, yeah our Scrubba washbag is super useful! Yeah, we would definitely recommend the Manaslu trek if you are only doing one. Have a great time! We have some guides over on our blog if you need help planning - www.goingthewholehogg.com/destinations/south-asia/nepal/ Cheers, Kim
@@GoingTheWholeHogg wow, you were not kidding about your blog , so much useful information. So grateful. Max x
@@stickyprickle cheers! Glad you find it helpful. Happy planning!
Another stunning video - and such high production values - really impressive! Thanks for showing how the trek looks now. I did this trek in 1992 (!) - without the road, it was literally done as a 21 day "circuit" starting way down in Besisahar, over the pass and down the other side pretty much to Pokhara! There was one shower on the whole trek - surprisingly at Muktinath - a public hot shower you paid for by the 5 minutes, which raised money for the local community - they had a water turbine to generate electricity. Isn't Kagbeni a jewel?
Oh wow, such a different experience! I bet that shower felt so good after crossing the Thorong La. We loved Kagbeni, a real jewel indeed. We stayed 3 nights there in the end, enjoying just wandering the streets and people watching. It's so surprising how different two places can be, just a couple of hours walk from each other. We've enjoyed reading up on the history of the region since.
@Maths.. wow 1992? Im still 9years old..:)
Nice smooth journey from two kindest human.
Theres a saying "Dal bhat power 24 hour" and looks like kim(from north korea) and del( from UK) are just showing the practical proof haha
Yeah, we're big believers in Dal Bhat Power 24 Hour! We miss dal bhat so much, especially when hiking. We are both from Scotland by the way ; )
Your video has inspired me to go back to Nepal. It looks like the Manaslu circuit is a good trek..... Finding a bakery is always a real treat.... !!
Glad to hear it! Yeah, it's a great trek, with a lovely variety of scenery.
Loved this :) Thanks for your treks, your humor, and your humbleness -- we are walking 'with you' as our inside Covid exercise. So wonderful to see the trail, the views, and fun to listen to your commentary.
Thanks, Dodie! Really glad you enjoyed the hike through the Himalaya with us : )
Perfect time to release the video. Made me feel like being there when I can't go out.
Thanks Vivek, and glad to provide a little escapism to the Himalaya!
Really enjoyed the way you guys have captured your trek. I did this trek in 1999 which was then known as 21 days trek starting from Besisahar and ending at Baglung. Fascinating to see how trekking routes have been shaped up in Nepal. Mero Collection.
Thanks! Wow, yeah the trekking route and experience must have changed a lot since 1999. We did our first trek in the Annapurna region in 2010 and the changes even since then are notable. Have you returned to trek again in Nepal since '99?
@@GoingTheWholeHogg unfortunately no, late 90s been some interesting period for me in terms of trekking. Having completed Everest basecamp, ABC and its region like Poon hill and also parts of lower Dolpo but than the political turmoil hampered Nepal so badly. Anyway I am looking forward to trailing Mustang in September 2024 and Manaslu following year. I have been watching your videos very closely and loving it. Thanks for the hard work.
@@HemantaGurung2370 That's great you'll be returning to see even more over the next couple of years, they are both very beautiful and interesting treks. I'm sure you will be amazed at how different the trekking experience is now compared to the late 90s! Wishing you a wonderful experience on your return to Nepal : )
Thank you so much for this video, it has really helped me with an insight into the trail.
You're welcome! Glad to help. Thanks for watching : )
Great video you have inspired me to go here
That’s great, it’s a special part of the world. Thanks 😃
Such a awesome video ! hats up !! Loved it .

Cool! The trek up by Ngawal was one of our very favourite days, absolutely stunning! We trekked to ABC twice before in 2010/2012 and visited Poon Hill and Chhomrong then, also very nice. Hope you can make it back to Nepal next year!
My dream hike...thank you for sharing. Love it!!!
You’re welcome, glad you enjoyed the video!
Great video, gives the viewer a nice flavour of the trek. Also like the stills in between the footage 👍
Cheers, Rick! Glad you enjoyed it and got a feel for what the trek is like. Thanks for watching! Kim
15:27 "Now I understand the expression 'freezing your arse off' ". HAHA!
Wasn’t so funny at the time 😂🥶!
All the heat to your organs. The extremities can freeze. Amazing how the body just does that. No switches required. Must have been miserable.
Brilliant, loved it guys.
Another hit, glad to hear it!
oh this video as I watched 1 month before too and way enjoyed it Dhal Bhat couple
Hehe, 'Dhal Bhat Couple'. I like that name! Thanks for watching, glad you enjoy the videos!

Really nice video guys, you got some really nice footage! It was interesting to follow your journey. Keep it up!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it : )
@@GoingTheWholeHogg I also appreciate the honesty. Like with your Upper Pisang video you guys weren't having the best time, but still had an adventure. I appreciate the realness!
@@digitalhermit8928 Cheers! It's something we always appreciate in others and it's just the way we are too : )
❤️❤️❤️So beautiful
Those mountains certainly are! Thanks for watching!
Of all thing your collection of caps and headcovers is amazing you shall post where we can get them too
Thanks, think our hats came from Nepal and Tibet 😃
Thank you for this... :)
Really nice content... Love the blogs too. Thank YOU!!!!!
Thanks so much! Very glad you enjoyed the videos and blog ❤️
I am not surprised it was so cold at 17,769 feet!
Yeah, glad for all the woolly clothing!
We've got an extra night to use up, so debating whether to spend it in Ngawal or Kagbeni. We're doing the higher road anyhow via upper Pisang but not sure whether to stop off at Dhikur Pokhari for the night like you did or continue up to Pisang. Kagbeni looks beautiful so thinking it might be worth the extra day there. What do you think?
Ngawal was nice but if you have to choose, we would probably recommend to stay in Kagbeni instead as there’s more to explore around the town. The views from Ngawal are great but you’ll get those anyway when you pass through. We stopped in Dhukur Pokhari cause we had time and felt like a bit more of a rest soon after finishing the Manaslu Circuit, but if you have time it’s probably best to continue on to Upper Pisang, especially if not staying in Ngawal. That way you’ll have less distance to cover to get to Manang. Hope that helps 🙂
@@GoingTheWholeHogg awesome, thank you for the recommendation! Heading off to Nepal next week!
Great! Have an amazing time 😃
Fantastic..waiting for part 3
Thank you!
Beautiful
It sure is! Thanks for watching : )
love you guys
Thanks!
Some absolutely outstanding views. Would have appreciated it more if there wasn’t so much quick cutting. But then it may be just being old, which I am fairly - but you hardly get to see a nice view before it cuts to something else.
Cheers for the feedback, Martin! Yeah, we've changed our style in more recent months to a slower edit with longer shots to appreciate the scenery more as we've realised we prefer that too.
Great videos guys. When will you post part 3 in Upper Mustang? Was it difficult to get a permit for this restricted area?
Thanks! Actually, it'll be out later today : ) We're just finishing up the accompanying itinerary and will publish them together. The complete trekking guide will be out on the blog next week too. All the info about permits will be in the guide! It's not difficult, but there are rules to follow and it costs $500. Thanks for watching!
Amazing video! Reminded me of myself doing the Annapurna Circuit a couple of years ago. You guys could have done the walk to Tilicho Lake to extend your trek😅
Thanks! Glad it brought back some memories. We so wish we'd been able to walk to Tilicho Lake too, but unfortunately we didn't have enough time factored in before our permits started for Upper Mustang : (
Amaaaaaziiiing!
Thank you!!
Magnificent, as always :-) And what a pleasure to be able to travel through your video. Did you organize the trek by yourself?
Thank you! I know, feels strange for us to be editing this video and writing about trekking in the mountains, when in reality we are indoors all day for weeks on end : / But, glad you enjoyed taking a little journey to the Himalaya with us! We organised the full trek (Manaslu/Annapurna/Upper Mustang) through a guide who we trekked with in 2010 and has since started his own company. But actually, you don't have to have a guide for the Annapurna Circuit, just for Manaslu and Upper Mustang.
Going The Whole Hogg I have added this destination to my travel list, for the day when we will be free to live our passions again!
Nice footage guys, brings back good memories from 2003. Were there any drone regulations back when you went or did you just sneak the drone in?
Thanks for watching, glad to jog the memory! I believe drone restrictions have since changed and become stricter.
@@GoingTheWholeHogg I'm finding all these Nepal vlogs coming onto my time line at the moment so always good to see a new perspective. I'm getting itchy feet to go to Nepal in April though not sure if I can sneak out of the UK!
@@torotaxi1 Yeah it's stressful trying to plan travel right now, especially with the ever changing rules for re-entry. Maybe April 2022 : /
Very good
zo pa thank you!
Apples or Dal Bhat? That is the question! Would it be too difficult to pack dehydrated?
Dal bhat always! Might be tricky to dehydrate though ; )
Dhukur Pokhari 3:31 : WHAT? There was one draughty shack when I went trough in 2009!!!
Yeah, it's changed A LOT on that trail!
I am from Upper Mustang which is also known as the Hidden Kingdom of Lo tribe. The place is famous for trekking and I also love to trek in the Himalayas. Check out the places that I had trekked till. #hwwtreks
Thanks for watching, Rigzin!
What’s the song when you leave Disneyland ? Around the 5min.25sec part of the video. ?
Cool video btw
Thanks lee

Hello sir
Just wanted to know if there is mobile network or satellite phone available in shree kharka, yak kharka or throrng phedi ??
Hi, we don’t remember there being any network service and we’re not sure about satellite phones, but we don’t think there are any.
you guys ate lots of daal bhaat. Dhaal bhaat power = 24 hour 😋
Can't get enough of it!
I'm planning to trek Annapurna Circuit in April. As you have already mentioned from chame to pisang it's a road and not a proper trail. Im thinking of starting the trek from Manang? Would it be wise to start from Manang so that I can save the first two days and I can add tilicho lake in my itinerary for those days?
Hi Sourav, while this idea works in theory, in reality I wouldn't recommend it as Manang is already at over 3500m and you very much increase the risk of altitude sickness by starting here. It's better to start at lower altitude so that you can acclimatise properly. Also, the NATT route via Upper Pisang and Ngawal on the way to Manang is very beautiful and almost completely off-road. It would be a shame to miss this. Hope this helps with the itinerary planning. We have lots more info about the trek over on our blog (maybe you found it already, if not here are the links > www.goingthewholehogg.com/annapurna-circuit-trek-guide/ and www.goingthewholehogg.com/annapurna-circuit-trek-itinerary/)
Cheers and happy hiking! Kim
If you want to compare between Manaslu and upper Mustang treks, which route is the most enjoyable?
I would say overall Manaslu is the most enjoyable. Upper Mustang is very beautiful but has more road walking sections than Manaslu, and less variety of scenery. There are interesting cultural aspects on both treks. Hope this helps with your decision!
@@GoingTheWholeHogg thanks, you did a great help.
@@saramagharei you’re welcome. We have lots more information about each trek in our guides and itinerary outlines over on our blog - www.goingthewholehogg.com/destinations/south-asia/nepal/ Have a great time when it comes! Cheers, Kim
@@GoingTheWholeHogg I have finished Manaslu guidline just now. Wow, it was perfect. You didn't miss any point. I will continue to end.
@@saramagharei that’s great to hear, glad it’s helpful!
which was your best base camp trek so far ? every place has its own beauty but which one did u like the most ??
Interesting question. As far as actual base camp treks go, Annapurna Base Camp has a special place in our memory. It really is spectacular, like an amphitheater but surrounded by mountains. And actually, we recently found Everest Base Camp to be very impressive, both in terms of location and in terms of human logistics and ingenuity. Do you have a favourite?
Come to my beautiful country India 🇮🇳.....
Hope you will not disappointed at any time....
We have been twice before to India, and would love to return and trek in the mountains some time!
Excellent video
Hey I also plan trekking to Annapurna Circuit in end of year. Did you treeking after the winter in April 2020? Did you hire porter/guide?
Hey, cool, you'll love it I'm sure! We trekked in October time. We had a guide because we were also trekking the Manaslu Circuit before and Upper Mustang after, and you need a guide for both of those treks so we just kept the same one for the whole time. But you don't have to trek with a guide if you don't want to. We carried our own bags. It's also possible to hire a porter-guide. If you want some more info about the trek we've written a whole guide over on our blog (bit.ly/2yLZi4L), and a detailed itinerary too (bit.ly/35uwQAi). Enjoy! Cheers, Kim
What is the song that plays at 14:30? It slaps
What was the exact dates of your trekking around Annapurna circuit ?
We trekked there in the second half of October 2018
❤️🤲🏻🙏👍😷
What time of year did you go?
We trekked in October
Did you bump into many solo trekkers. I would hate to be in a rush with a group.
Yeah, plenty of solo trekkers, or some in pairs. Definitely a mix of bigger groups and individuals on this one. Overnighting in less common villages helps to avoid crowds on the trail.
Nice video I hope you enjoy .
You don't have guide because you never talk with your guide might be you are trekking with out guide
Thanks! Yes, we enjoyed this trek very much (apart from the roads!). We did have a guide, same person from our Manaslu and Upper Mustang treks. Although we didn't really need one for this trek, but we stayed together for the full 35 days anyway.
The word you guys says"BALTIC" I assume you both are from Scotland? 😁😜
Well observed 😂
@@GoingTheWholeHogg 😜😜😜 I must say your (lady) hair do look like Nicola sturgeon. 🤣🤣
😂
Is there anything like this in the USA?
Well, we haven't been hiking in the US so not sure if there's anything to compare scenery wise but there are certainly plenty of long distance hiking trails like the Pacific Crest Trail, Appalachian Trail and so on.
Dal bhat ... you will remember
Always! Never forget it!

Good shots but too fast transitions, irritating.
Thanks for the feedback!
Such a lovely landscape and you cut it so terrible - less is more and please - not so fast. And your choice of music is also "special" - no emotions possible! Sad...
Sorry you didn’t enjoy it. Perhaps you’d prefer our Winter Bothy or Isle of Mull video.
Choppy edits are REALLY annoying. The only way to take in the awesome scenery is when you launch into one of your many boring talking bits with some views in the background.
