The Honda Monkey 125 did not live up to my expectations... as a dual-sport bike

- Don't be misled by the title, I had to get your attention! The Honda Monkey 125 is a wonderful bike, it's just not the dual-sport all purpose mini-weapon I tried to make it into. No fault of the bike, just me trying to make everything I have do the type of riding I enjoy most, which is dirt and off-road. While the Monkey "can do it", it absolutely battered me to pieces during my 8-days of riding in the mountains of Upstate NY during our 2022 summer trip. During that beating I took, every ride brought to me the realization that I was on the wrong bike for the stuff I was doing with it. The Monkey belongs in racetrack paddocks, campgrounds, inner cities, slow backroads, and at some point in my life - the Florida Keys! It doesn't belong in the woods jumping rocks and slogging through mud, no matter what kind of parts you put on it. SO, this was likely my last attempt at off-roading with the Honda Monkey 125. Let's put a fork in this adventure, cause it's well-done!
Hope you enjoyed my attempt and defeat at off-roading the Honda Monkey 125, it may not sound like it, but I really did enjoy it! I had a blast on the multiple trips I've partaken in to NY, PA, and Indiana with the Monkey, but bigger things are on the horizon for me and I'm hoping you'll be as interested in what my next choice is!
My grom with mobbers is still fairly squirly on forest roads, but does great on trails. However, I'm a chill scenic rider. Not really into treating it like a true dirtbike.
I've been in the same situation I have a monkey and in the past I've had a ktm then a couple drz400 but I will honestly say I really enjoy the Kawasaki klx300 dual sport I think that would be worth looking into for what you seem to be aiming for. As always love the content!
I love my Honda Monkey, but I only ride country backroads. No off-road.

Well, I still have to say that..The Monkey is a “capable” machine but but just not a hardcore off roading machine, no matter how many parts you bolt on it, upgrade, or replace.
I recently have been watching Grom videos out of the blue. I am a short rider so I have a MT-03, XT250 and a stock Sur-Ron. I find the Sur-Ron very limiting because of its range of approximately 30 to 40 miles on a charge. I'm curious about the Grom but not sure if I would pull the trigger on one. If I could get a 2023 for $3K otd. I would jump on one right away. 🤷🏻♂️
