    10:19 to leave the shape open you can just SHIFT+ click the last point to deselect it and when you continue drawing it will create a new one.

    Excellent. I love how you took a standard feature in After Effects (The Stroke tool) and taught us how to use it through an awesome creative looking tutorial, not just here, make a box using the stroke tool or here the stroke tool can make lines. This tut makes learning this feature interesting. I've been using After Effects for approx. 20 years and there are still many features I haven't mastered. Cheers.

    • @cmdelavega
      @cmdelavega  5 років тому +1

      Double check that no layer is selected on timeline. Click outside the timeline to deselect. If a layer is selected and you use pentool, it will draw a mask.

    • @abhinavjoshi0411
      @abhinavjoshi0411 5 років тому +1

      @@cmdelavega indeed brother, it was drawring a mask. But when I double click on any footage, it opens up some layer. On that layer the tools. What is that layer which opens up on double click.
      Thanks a lot man.

    • @cmdelavega
      @cmdelavega  5 років тому

      When you double click on any footage, it will open up in the layer panel. You don't want to be in the layer panel to create the shape layer. You want to stay in the composition panel (main window/work area where you see what you're creating/animating). If you're in the composition panel, follow these steps. (1) deselect all layers by going to Edit -> Deselect All. You can also use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+A. (2) Click on the Pen Tool. (3) Draw/Trace in the composition panel. At this point After Effects will create a new layer and it should be a Shape Layer. The layer name should start with the words "Shape Layer". Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

    I think you can improve your speed if you use Adobe Illustrator, not only can it give you smoother and cleaner lines but it's easier to navigate around for painting. Then, import to After effects and convert to shapes.

      Most definitely! You may want to use a different technique to make it less work otherwise you could be going frame by frame or if it's people talking maybe the face stays the same but just the mouth moves. You'll need to do some experimentation and see what works best.

    Great tutorial. How would you go about doing this frame-by-frame? For example, on a 30 frame video, and wanting to draw on each frame separately.

    • @cmdelavega
      @cmdelavega  5 років тому +6

      Thanks! That's a great question. The long and tedious way is perhaps to make a comp for each frame, draw the lines in each comp. Make a master comp and bring each comp and trim to one frame. Wouldn't be very practical. Another way is to keyframe the shape layer throughout the 30 frames. This will be faster. A faster technique involves using masks instead of shape layers. Use the auto trace function (Layer -> Auto Trace). First, make the image a high contrast, black and white image. 2, use the alpha channel option in Auto Trace to create the outer line/mask. You would just need to add the details in the face, etc. You can also you the Saber plugin from Video Copilot for the glow!

    Great video.One thing, looks like you used a pen to trace instead of a mouse. Thats a worthy note for people , it would make it alot easier

      Thanks! Yes, I've been using a Wacom drawing tablet for years and you are correct, makes a difference and lot easier than using a mouse.

    With all the technology we have, all these masterminded computers, I think we should be able to make this animation a more smart and easy way instead of making it frame by frame. A 1-second standard video has 30 frames per second and to make a 15-20 sec long video will take a couple of days for some of us. Don't you agree?

    • @cmdelavega
      @cmdelavega  3 роки тому +1

      Computers facilitate the animation process but there will always be a space for the traditional frame by frame technique. I recently worked on an ESPN video and did it frame by frame. About 2-3 seconds, hours of work but finally result was worth it!

    Awesome video. With it I saw that u done it with pictures. So if I film some doing some actions would the same kind of edit

    • @cmdelavega
      @cmdelavega  4 роки тому

      Thank you! Yes, you can use video instead. You have more options with a video. 1) You can use every frame of the video. Only downside it would be a lot of work. (2) You can select certain frames from the video. Select the key poses or frames you want to use and freeze frame and do the edit.

    How versatile is after effects? If I have something creative in mind in respect to a scene I’d like to create are there a lot of limitations to what AE can do?

    • @cmdelavega
      @cmdelavega  5 років тому +3

      The only limitation is in the mind. When it comes to motion graphics, you can do almost anything, especially in 2D. The 3D capability has really come a long way, with plugins like Video Copilot Element 3D and integration with Cinema 4D.
