10:19 to leave the shape open you can just SHIFT+ click the last point to deselect it and when you continue drawing it will create a new one.
Thanks for sharing, NBA Commercial looks really nice.
Awesome tip! It's a time saver. Thank you amigo!!
@@cmdelavega THANK YOU SOO MUCH for this. Do you mind adding the section on how @blottermedia instagram.com/blottermedia/ does the other 'moving lights animations'. I really Appreciate what you are doing
For sure! Popular technique. Would be a great tutorial. I'm finishing work for Super Bowl, then I'll finish Part 2 of the ESPN promo tutorial and I'll get started on this technique. Thanks for sharing and suggestion!!
@@cmdelavega AWESOME!!!! cant wait! thank you
Ggh
Good people like you are the cause of the existence of this universe

Trying my best
I hear you amigo! It's not easy but as long as we trying our best, know that you're doing it!
One of my favorite tutorials, I can use it to add cool kitchen effects in my cooking videos. Electric knife skills LOL
Thank you bro!!!
You are the best man!
i had too many questions in my head and got my answers in a single video. Thanks hero for sharing your time with people.
Awesome! Happy to hear it was helpful and you got your questions answered!
Excellent. I love how you took a standard feature in After Effects (The Stroke tool) and taught us how to use it through an awesome creative looking tutorial, not just here, make a box using the stroke tool or here the stroke tool can make lines. This tut makes learning this feature interesting. I've been using After Effects for approx. 20 years and there are still many features I haven't mastered. Cheers.
Thank you! I appreciate your comment and looking deeper into the technique in the tutorial. Same here, I've been using AE for a while - 11 years - and still have much much more to learn!!
Man I was not able to put a shape on footage. Thanks a lot. I was missing deselecting all the layers.
Double check that no layer is selected on timeline. Click outside the timeline to deselect. If a layer is selected and you use pentool, it will draw a mask.
@@cmdelavega indeed brother, it was drawring a mask. But when I double click on any footage, it opens up some layer. On that layer the tools. What is that layer which opens up on double click.
Thanks a lot man.
When you double click on any footage, it will open up in the layer panel. You don't want to be in the layer panel to create the shape layer. You want to stay in the composition panel (main window/work area where you see what you're creating/animating). If you're in the composition panel, follow these steps. (1) deselect all layers by going to Edit -> Deselect All. You can also use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+A. (2) Click on the Pen Tool. (3) Draw/Trace in the composition panel. At this point After Effects will create a new layer and it should be a Shape Layer. The layer name should start with the words "Shape Layer". Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.
If u add saber to the mask it will look even more lit :)
Lol. It definitely would look more lit!
Not only was this tutorial worth the 'like'. Your personality is just so Positive. I subscribed !

Thank you very much amigo! Made my day!
30 seconds into the video and I've already pressed 'subscribe'.
I really appreciate the subscription! Thank you!! Any questions you have in After Effects, feel free to ask.
I have one question. What is the difference between “nest” and “pre-compose”?
Ps: I like your videos very much. Great work!
Thank you! As far as I know, Nest or Nesting and Pre-compose is the same thing, just different ways of saying the same concept. We use the word Pre-compose in After Effects and Nest in Premiere.
Ok, thank you!
@@MiguelGarcia-xx7we No problem!
As always simple, creative and beautiful, thanks again bro, blessings.
Thank you Tony! Appreciate your comment and many blessings to you too!
thank you for teaching us how to use the pen tool... id like my 15 minutes back
Sorry to hear you're having issues with pen tool. I remember I had problems when I first started using pen tool in Photoshop. This tutorial was an intermediate level for people with experience using the pen tool. It's quite easy once you get the hang of it. For every point you create, just Click and Drag, Release and repeat the steps. Hope this help!
I just found your channel while trying to find some awesome sports motion graphics for After Effects. Thanks so much!
You're welcome! Hope the tutorials will be helpful!
So brilliantly explained. Thank you for creating this video. You are a great discovery. 👍👍

Thank you!!! I appreciate you went slow when explaining 🙏🏽🙏🏽
You’re welcome 😊 Happy it was helpful!
Wow! This is fantastic - giving us ideas for future videos.
You're welcome!!
I think you can improve your speed if you use Adobe Illustrator, not only can it give you smoother and cleaner lines but it's easier to navigate around for painting. Then, import to After effects and convert to shapes.
Thanks for the tip! Yes, definitely for those who are comfortable with Illustrator, it's a better/quicker workflow. Illustrator is not my strength, so that's why I just stuck with AE. Appreciate the tip!!
I might actually start my own channel, you get a ton of feedback! Keep it up!
Keep me posted when you're up and running with your channel. I'll be first to subscribe!

Thank you!!! Appreciate the comment Chuck!
a (sort of) cool alternative is to import the frames into photoshop and apply the glowing edge filter, then import to after effects
Yes! I've tried it too! Doesn't always give me great results. What about you?
@@cmdelavega no not everytime but if you shoot in front of an even BG it usually turns out pretty good

Thank you bro! Appreciate it and happy you enjoyed the video.
this video is actually good
you got a sub
Thank you Thomas!! Appreciate the sub!
Can we rotoscope the subject then find edges then deep glow
Yes you can go that route, won't give you the cleanest look but if that doesn't matter than should be ok.
U are the best. Thank you very much!
Appreciate it Mario! Thank you!
Can we use this effect like talking to someone in a conversation
Most definitely! You may want to use a different technique to make it less work otherwise you could be going frame by frame or if it's people talking maybe the face stays the same but just the mouth moves. You'll need to do some experimentation and see what works best.
Great tutorial for the start of 2019.
Thank you so much!
Excellent tutorial. Can you show us how to do that in Photoshop and make it look good ( sorry for my bad grammar)
Thanks. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/_ljHEvYTOs8/v-deo.html
@@cmdelavega thank you so much!
Helpful and very nice tutorial
You're welcome! Thank you!
great job
Thank you!
Great tutorial. How would you go about doing this frame-by-frame? For example, on a 30 frame video, and wanting to draw on each frame separately.
Thanks! That's a great question. The long and tedious way is perhaps to make a comp for each frame, draw the lines in each comp. Make a master comp and bring each comp and trim to one frame. Wouldn't be very practical. Another way is to keyframe the shape layer throughout the 30 frames. This will be faster. A faster technique involves using masks instead of shape layers. Use the auto trace function (Layer -> Auto Trace). First, make the image a high contrast, black and white image. 2, use the alpha channel option in Auto Trace to create the outer line/mask. You would just need to add the details in the face, etc. You can also you the Saber plugin from Video Copilot for the glow!
It is easy, but take so long 😢 that's why looks so good 🤣🤣
Please show us how you use that pen as a mouse!!
Yes, it's time consuming but worth the extra effort. I use a Wacom Intuos Pro graphics tablet.
@@cmdelavega I have one to do this effect (brought it some time ago) but I never knew how to use it like a mouse 😪
definitely going to get that book!
Thank you Jake! Appreciate it! Let me know if you have any questions.
@@cmdelavega Actually if you have the time I would like to know if you went to University to study VFX or were you self taught? (sorry if you already made a video on this)
@@Jake-iy8lf No worries! I actually studied engineering. All the motion graphics and VFX I taugth myself through books, videos and practice! Here's a recap: ua-cam.com/video/c7C5L4weZ0o/v-deo.html

can you do such stuff for me please some complex stuff of my tower cranes?
Awesome channel amigo! I wish I can help but I'm quite busy with lots of projects. Best of luck in your crane videos!
loved it
Thank you!🙏
good job. it was fun
Thank you so much.. Seems so cool... You said that we can do this either in an image or video? How to do it for a video subject?
You can freeze frame the parts of the video you want to do or you can do it frame by frame, which looks amazing but is extremely time consuming.
@@cmdelavega yeah I thought the same.. Thanks
So first thing I realized is the barca hat!! Forca Barca!! Great video btw, I've been interested in learning this to include into my workflow. Thanks, I'll definitely sub to you.
Lol!!! I visited Barcelona this past year and couldn't leave without a souvenir. Appreciate the subscription!
Definitely want to use this in my next music video(s) for my channel. Appreciate the tutorial 🙏🏾 I’ll link this tutorial in the description when I do since it helped so much 🤳🏾

C.M. de la VEGA of course! Feel free to subscribe and stay tuned! Just subscribed to you
Great video. One thing, looks like you used a pen to trace instead of a mouse. Thats a worthy note for people , it would make it alot easier
Thanks! Yes, I've been using a Wacom drawing tablet for years and you are correct, makes a difference and lot easier than using a mouse.
Brilliant idea. Thanks
You're welcome! Thank you!
wait... what are you using that pen on? what touch pad is it?
It's a Wacom Intuos Pro graphics tablet. I love it! www.wacom.com/
Thank you, that's pretty creative!

Hi there! What's the music at the end of the video? Sounds good..

Definitely! Give it a shot.
Amazing Video~!
Thank you so much!
Muchas gracias es muy detallado el tutorial me vino a la mente Muchas ideas en donde lo puedo usar
A la orden! Gracias!!
very clear illustration!!!
Thanks!! Appreciate it!
With all the technology we have, all these masterminded computers, I think we should be able to make this animation a more smart and easy way instead of making it frame by frame. A 1-second standard video has 30 frames per second and to make a 15-20 sec long video will take a couple of days for some of us. Don't you agree?
Computers facilitate the animation process but there will always be a space for the traditional frame by frame technique. I recently worked on an ESPN video and did it frame by frame. About 2-3 seconds, hours of work but finally result was worth it!
Awesome video. With it I saw that u done it with pictures. So if I film some doing some actions would the same kind of edit
Thank you! Yes, you can use video instead. You have more options with a video. 1) You can use every frame of the video. Only downside it would be a lot of work. (2) You can select certain frames from the video. Select the key poses or frames you want to use and freeze frame and do the edit.
How versatile is after effects? If I have something creative in mind in respect to a scene I’d like to create are there a lot of limitations to what AE can do?
The only limitation is in the mind. When it comes to motion graphics, you can do almost anything, especially in 2D. The 3D capability has really come a long way, with plugins like Video Copilot Element 3D and integration with Cinema 4D.
C.M. de la VEGA Thank you!
The more I learn AE, the more I realize how much it is actually capable of
Yes! It's amazing what one can do with AE!
Nice Video Pro
