Tarbosaurus (name meaning "Alarming Lizard") is a genus of tyrannosaurid dinosaur that originated during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Asia. One of the largest known theropod dinosaurs and by far the apex predator in its time and region, Tarbosaurus was the second-largest member of the Tyrannosaur family, following only Tyrannosaurus itself. Like all members of the tyrannosaur family, Tarbosaurus hunted in packs, cooperating with both adult and juvenile members. It was a formidable predator and an extremely efficient hunter, possessing one of the strongest jaws ever discovered in a dinosaur, along with rows of large, sharp teeth.
Paleontologists have suggested that Tarbosaurus was nearly identical to Tyrannosaurus, not just due to their shared family classification. In fact, Tarbosaurus was essentially described as the Asian equivalent of Tyrannosaurus. As a result, many dinosaur experts believe it to be an Asian species of Tyrannosaurus rather than its own distinct genus. However, despite its similarities to its more well-known North American relative, Tarbosaurus was slightly smaller and slightly more slender in comparison.
