Turns out Viserys was wrong. Daemon did have many enemies, but he had just as much allies, and he's a resourceful man. He was Rhaenyra's strongest backer during the Dance, and did a fine job making things impossible for the Greens as long as he lived. If both had married since the beginning, there would be no question of the legitimacy of Rhaenyra's children, House Velaryon would still support them since they could use their children for marriage alliances with Corlys' and Rhaenys' descendants, and Rhaenyra would've gathered allies through Daemon much earlier, and be better prepared against the Greens' schemes.

It would give him the power he or so craves, the ability to protect his brother and their family and give him the freedom that he oh so indulges in
