    Another great video! I am in the middle of building my RIMS system. Currently have the mash tun completed minus a sparging arm or some kind of sparging device. I still need to purchase my boil kettle. All my pumps, tubing, fittings, elelements, etc are taken care of thanks to Bobby at brewhardware. I am also in the middle of wiring the up my control panel. Can't wait to get brewing with it! Thanks for all the useful info!!

    Another informative video - I built a 70 liter HERMES system based on the electric brewery, the problem I have is remembering what hose goes where and making sure the correct ball valves are open or closed so I've decided to automate that part, I have the system set up on an Ardunio mega and a 16 slot low trigger relay board. the status is displayed on a LCD screen, once a have a few more bits I will put it into use, took a few weeks to get the code sorted , the 12V valves take a few seconds to open so there is a small delay built in before the chugger pumps turn on . Its been a lot of fun making it , might even make a video about it later on, Regards from New Zealand

      The herms valves are always the tricky part.. Sounds like you have a plan to deal with it. I would love to see it when you're done!
      Thanks for watching!

    I have one more idea I'll sing about doing a rim system because you can have the heating element inside of a tube I think that would take up less space then you also get the benefit of the recirculating Mash if I understood your video right so I need a system that can easy put together taking apart because I don't have enough room my apartment to leave it up all the time like you having your system

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers

    I have been looking at your electric Brew systems videos all day my issue is that I live in an apartment I need this isn't a small and compact that can at least do 5 to 10 gallon batches I was thinking about buying a grandfather system but I seen the one of your videos that you could possibly build one for cheaper than that The Grandfather's are now going between 800 and $1,100 I wonder if you have any ideas how to build a small system comparable to the grandfather or better that I can build myself over other people who have space at a premium and that can do it indoors from a standard wall outlet I would like to hear from you

      Funny you should say that. I have been thinking of doing an "apartment" size brewing system. It is in the works so if you are subscribed I appreciate it and I will be doing one in the near future.. Cheers!

    I use convoluted coil as herms to maintain mash heat. Works like a charm without flexible weldless fittings that leak

      Cool I bet it does with all the turbulence it creates. Wish I could TIG like you can. Where did you get it? Cheers!

      Short Circuited Brewers Btw turbulence? It doesn't create much of than and not more than any other coil. It dosen't matter if the heat exchanges in a coil inside a kettle or in an external coil since it circulating all the time it takes. And I also use the coil to cool after the boil.

      VKING actually.. Kinda funny! I have 1 support at the rear. I found a ladle at a restaurant supply store and cut off the top part of the handle and bent the hook part back on itself.. Voila! HERMS coil support.. $3 solution that is stainless.. I talk about it at the 10:00 mark in the video.

    Do you recommend measuring mash temp at the MT outlet, HERMS coil inlet, HERMS coil outlet, or MT inlet? The challenge is understanding the average temp in the MT because the top is going to be hotter than the bottom.

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers
      @ShortCircuitedBrewers  4 роки тому +1

      I generally measure both at the outlet on the HLT and the inlet to the mash tun. You'll have a slight difference from top to bottom it is negligible since you are recirculating the wort. If you are concerned you can bump the temp by 1 degree so the average from top to bottom is your preferred temp. Swing by our live stream on Saturday. I'm getting my big system back up and running. You can see it in action. 👍🍻

    Brian, is there an important factor in using a 15 or 20 gallon kettle when you may find that you are doing only 6-7 gallon batches to yield 5gal. Besides the depth vs height that you mentioned in the beginning . I’m thinking I might be thinking to use 3 gallon corny kegs when it is all finally ready to use

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers
      @ShortCircuitedBrewers  3 роки тому

      Just to clarify, are you looking at making 3 gallon batches? And is the kettle question about batch size?

    • @knuckle47
      @knuckle47 3 роки тому

      Yes.... I can brew small batches of several recipes and be diversified in tastes

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers
      @ShortCircuitedBrewers  3 роки тому

      @@knuckle47 ok so what is the question about the vessel are you looking to build a smaller HERMS system?

    • @knuckle47
      @knuckle47 3 роки тому

      My concern would be.... I would like to start with small batch...then in 6 months< it turns out that I have a greater need occasionally for larger batches, what happens using a 15-20 gallon Herms to make a 2-3 gallon recipe,

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers
      @ShortCircuitedBrewers  3 роки тому

      @@knuckle47 you can't really do that. You would need to upgrade your system. You kinda have to decide in the beginning. Or you could get a small single vessel system for small batches and then upgrade to a HERMS later.

    Hey Brian, I like your vids. I have never brewed beer before. I've been researching beer brewing for about a year or more. I've decided to by pass extract brewing and go straight into all grain electric brewing with a HERMS system. I've been gathering equipment slowly do to cost. I have 3-10gal. Megs pots, 2-5500 watt elements with enclosures and a few other things. But I'm looking to get the HERMS system or the control system next. I found a complete HERMS kit with or with out pumps at Stainlessbrewing.com (www.stainlessbrewing.com/Herms-Kit-ETA-51_p_273.html). I priced out all the separate pieces from Brewhardware.com and the one threw Stainless Brewing was about $56 cheaper, but the pumps are cheaper at Brewhardware. I like being able to buy kits versa having to spend hours on line trying to find everything. Can Brew Hardware match the price of Stainless Brewing?
    I have another thought, I could get started a lot quicker with the brew in a bag system until I get everything needed for the all grain system. Just as a thought, I'm thinking I could just use the control system for a hot water tank. The heat control wouldn't be as precise and I would have to monitor a lot more closely, but I'm thinking it might work until I can get a PID control system in place. What do you think? I can't wait until I start making my own beer. Thanks again for making the vids. CHEERS!

      Speed Buggy I would ask Brewhardware. I always say it never hurts to ask. What type of control are you thinking of for the BIAB?

    • @speedbuggy7240
      @speedbuggy7240 7 років тому

      Brian, I just found a commercial thermostat that goes up to 180 degrees. This could be used for just one element (www.amazon.com/Camco-08314-Degree-Commercial-Thermostat/dp/B0060HO8Z0/ref=pd_bxgy_263_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=5BAK3XWRF49W8NVEV4VH). It's the lower thermostat for hot water heater. Not very precise, but for $17 bucks, why not? The only other thing I would need is a pump system and faults bottom to keep the bag off the element. Rite? Like I said, I've brewed beer before in my life. Thanks for the quick response.

    • @ShortCircuitedBrewers
      @ShortCircuitedBrewers  7 років тому

      Yeah Dale, with BIAB once you heat your strike water using that type of device.. I would mash in and wrapped the kettle in blankets and not worry about recirculating as that unit won't hold your temp anyway. Then you can boil at full power.. BUT it will be a very rigorous boil if you're doing 5 gallon batches.. 10 would be slightly less but still pretty rigorous boil. 🍻
      Yes you would need something to keep the bag off of the element..
