This song and many others are why Suffocation are the forever reigning kings of truly technical death metal, not the video game wankery Archspire bullshit, but actual compositions of music. I can not believe there are tapped octave riffs, you did an amazing job with one of my personal favorite tunes next to Seeds of the Suffering, Ignorant Deprivation, Ornaments of Decrepancy, and Breeding the Spawn. I have only seen on UA-cam Suffo actually playing this maybe twice, and it looks like a seasoned orchestra going through a Sorabji piece.
What I get out of it is that they were technical for the sake of song writing and varying guitar notation, textures, ect. It's kinda like what Atheist did, but Suffo just put their own spin on it and integrated it into their style. I mean Liege was already a crazy technical song, but it was death metal...not technical whatever yea kno. They weren't being technical for the sake of it, they were just trailblazing new territory and writing the sickest shit. New technical death metal stuff isn't even technical half the time, it's just sweeping over blasts cuz they saw Origin do that a decade ago or so. To each their own, but it's all about songwriting in the end.
@@vacuus9281 The funniest thing happened though, Suffo are one of the most technical bands ever, and are at the same time credited with inventing slam, which is ironic considering the liege slam contains some not so technical octave sliding.
I was thinking the same thing. Great play through. What other bands do you find fit this bill with Suffo without being the new "video game" style tech-death we see so much of? Love to get your list of worthwhile tech bands that are real music Death Metal. Peace
@@scotslater As far as technical bands not many, possibly Timeghoul, Internal Bleeding, Blaspherian, Undeath, not too many that are like Suffocation, they are entirely unique.
@@scotslater Scot, check out Deeds Of Flesh Gradually Melted EP. it’s more rough and the songwriting isn’t as eloquent, but it’s got some really intense and consistent riffage that I enjoy A LOT
Sick! Also one of my favorite Suffocation tracks. So heavy! I covered this way back in the day, one of my earliest youtube vids haha. Nice downpicking man!
I remember watching your video. I was in high school and couldn’t get enough of the intro riff and wanted to learn it… but there were no tabs available, lol.
Great job man. Ha! You didn't fuck that one part up that bad. I'm in awe at how you played this that good in one take. This song has enough riffs for about ten great death metal songs. Hobbs' stuff has got to be the hardest to play. Best song on a phenomenal album.
Nice job man. I’ve really come to appreciate these guys. It used to be that I only enjoyed the “slammy” break down riffs, but watching you play and ADMIRING the way the riffs just flow together is really fun. Thanks for the awesome job
i've played a lot without looking at my fretting hand by visualizing the fretboard as you play and instinctively monitoring note by note that you are in tune with where you want to be. So when it comes to tapping...as i watch my tapping finger (12 frets up from each note).... I'm able to match my fretting hand! Hope this helps?!? By visualizing the fretboard that also allows me to be able to headbang over complicated parts even.
hey brother, I actually learned around 50-60 % of it about 3-4 years before i revisited it and did this video. I've done that with Moonlight Sonata as well. Really immense notation that's overwhelming it's good to not kill yourself over it. Take a break and re-visit it down the road! No idea if that makes sense haha! Cheers!
O ya i kno bro, tuff shit to get in your head. I was in Deeds of flesh in 90s and was trying to ear that shit out lol, not too sucessful. Derek use to live with us to fill in for Bass player for while. Now the skinny fuckers in Suffo, awesome. Dig ur playn brother , great musician ! @@vacuus9281
That is some intense downpicking
thank you man! Just trying to play it the way they did!!! The godfathers of downpicking.

Funny how time brought us to this comment thread. Cheers brother.
Wow one of my favourite old school songs from when I was a teenager covered absolutely perfectly, my hat goes off to you brother, wow.
thank you for the kind words bro! One of my favs!!
This is so hard to learn by ear due to the speed and the distortion. Kudos. I don't know if this is spot on but it is much better than I can achieve.
cheers bro, I learned this from the tab on songsterr.com... hopefully that'll make it easier for you! Best of luck!
@@vacuus9281 Thanks I'll check it out :)
