    3 people couldn’t guess that French was an official language of the EU, 10 couldn’t guess ENGLISH the language they were actually speaking in (!)

    • @Dendarang
      @Dendarang Місяць тому +1

      presumably those are the people who didn't know or were confused on what "official language of the EU" means and assumed something like official working language of the EU institutions in Brussels and Strasbourg and then assumed that that was French or German.

      Had the UK sort of left the EU when this was filmed?

    • @Dendarang
      @Dendarang Місяць тому +1

      @@richardfox6595 no, this was filmed in 2010 I believe. The transitory period for the UK was 2016-2020 before full withdrawal from the EU.

      It is not that they couldn’t guess that it was.
      The questions to the panel are open.
      They have 100s to name as many languages as they can and were too focus into finding odd ones that they forgot to name the obvious

    Patrick Bateman first appeared in The Rules of Attraction (1987), but I’m sure they’d only accept American Psycho (1991)

      Interesting. Maybe that's why they didn't show that answer.

      If they'd stopped yapping and got to it we may have heard. I think they would have accepted both though, I am sure the popular answer would of been American Psycho. Isn't he referred to by his brother, Sean, in Rules of Attraction - not really a main character.

    I guess some of them confused "official EU language" (i.e., languages that EU documents must be translated into) with "official language of EU countries" (which includes a lot of regional languages that EU documents _aren't_ translated into).

    • @MrJeppe313
      @MrJeppe313 2 місяці тому +4

      Even then, they also simply answered with languages from countries that aren't members of the EU like Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania (could also add Welsh from the UK to this, but I believe this is recorded before Brexit). I don't think you're wrong that they aren't aware that each member country only get to pick one language to become an official EU language, but I think the biggest issue was simply not knowing which countries are members or not.

    • @cocazade7703
      @cocazade7703 Місяць тому

      Official languages and regional languages are not the same thing. For example, although Catalan is spoken by millions of people, its still not an official lanaguage of Spain and therefore isnt an official language of the EU. However, despite its size, Irish IS a national official language of Ireland therefore an official EU language too

    • @RFC3514
      @RFC3514 29 днів тому +2

      @@cocazade7703 - There's no "therefore". Luxembourgish is a national official language of Luxembourg but not an official language of the EU. The same goes for Turkish (which has official language status in Cyprus, but isn't considered an official language of the EU).

    Herzegovinian is, in fact, not a language, but it is a rather polarizing accent. By that I mean, nobody can stand listening to it, except Herzegovinians 😂

  • @slyasleep

    I would have sworn that Luxembourgish was an official language of the EU. I would have been wrong.

    • @Dendarang
      @Dendarang Місяць тому +2

      yeah, that's where I would've probably failed and gotten 100 points as well. I was certain Luxembourgish was an official language and that that would've been a pointless answer but, after checking, apparently its not. Even though Luxembourgish is one of the official languages of Luxembourg (alongside German and French) and Luxembourg is a full member state of the EU, Luxembourgish isn't an official language instead it's a regional language of the EU.

    • @jmp9035
      @jmp9035 Місяць тому

      Luxembourgish isn't even a language rather a dialect of Moselle German

  • @joanneaugust6611
    @joanneaugust6611 Місяць тому +1

    Whew! I got a pointless answer for the first time - Slovenian. But apart from the fact that as a German, I couldn't get on the show, I would horribly fail at the final. The chances of getting a category you know anything about are slim. And even as a musicologist, I wouldn't go anywhere near Opera or Classical Music - the questions are weirdly specific and the British concertgoer definitely knows just as much about Verdi's operas etc. as me. Give me something like symphony's nicknames or anything by Mendelssohn, that's fine.

    This is so annoying. Richard and Alexander spent so much time faffing about over Ulysses that they forgot to give the score for Patrick Bateman.
    SPOILER:
    It's American Psycho, which is the one I would have chosen. I guess it wasn't pointless, but I figured it would be a low score.

    B&H are EU member candidates, not yet members.

      B&H is a member candidate, not member candidates. It’s a single country.
      Also, all over the Balkans, the language is a very divisive topic. Linguistically Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin are nearly the same, on a level similar to British English vs American English. But their native speakers all claim that these are separate languages.

    Round 1: Italy also did a question about Official EU languages and there were no pointless answers at all
    6:49 In Italy would've scored 8 points
    9:21 In Italy would've scored only 6 points 😱😱😱
    10:48 Only 16 points
    12:13 2 points
    13:33 Only 13 points
    15:24 The first answer from the top would've scored 2 points, the second one 8 points and the third one 3 points
    16:16 The 3rd answer from the top would've scored only 68 points, the 2nd one 95 points and the 1st one 98 points (In Italy our language would've scored just 57 points 😭😭😭😭😭😭)
    (In Italy another correct answer was the Croatian and scored 3 points. In Italy the best answer on the board would've been the Czech, our only 1-pointer)
