The Borg are like a sentient Amoeba. They wander around content to go where the galactic winds take them until they find something interesting with sufficient genetic and technological diversity, attack it head on with no sophisticated tactics or effort, merely throwing waves of attack drones at it, adapting until it can't fight back and absorbing it. That really is what they are, they're a semi-sentient high-tech amoeba. Their "Intelligence" is raw capacity and no cunning.

Good news for the borg, the fire suppression system will work against the fires Dresden caused. The books make a point that while it is created through magic, once created, it works the same as regular fire, which means that it needs oxygen and fuel to keep burning. So, yes, the fire suppression system will still work on extinguishing it.
On a side note: in one of the stories, Dresden uses physics to create an ice spell by using fire magic. He casted a massively powerful fire spell, but to do so, it had to draw nearly all the heat from the area around it, freezing the ground in the process.

    • @QuickStudy4

    • @DaraelDraconis
      @DaraelDraconis 10 місяців тому +14

The fire suppression system will indeed take care of it… once it's back online. And since John said that, we know it did in fact go offline thanks to Harry's general hex aura (or possibly even deliberate hexing).
But, since the fire is not magical per se (…unless he jumped straight to infusing it with Soulfire, but even Dresden isn't normally that reckless) the good news is that it won't itself keep the anti-tech effect going when Harry isn't actively sustaining it, so the suppression should come online eventually.
Regarding that ice spell: he _could_ have made a blaze that big without also producing a huge freeze, but it would have cost him a hell of a lot of energy (possibly to the point of needing to draw on his own life) to do it. It's just so much more _efficient_ to move energy around than it is to create it out of nothing. This is also the reason real-world heat-pumps such as are found in air conditioning or refrigerators are so efficient.

You could have a wizard assimilated, but magic may not work cause magic itself does not see the mage as one anymore.

If your magic system is one in which spells are powered by the caster's heart, emotions, or will then assimilating one will be useless since drones don't have any of that. If your magic system is based on precise equations and the processing power/intelligence of the caster... Yikes, that's gonna end even worse. The hive tries to cast a level one fireball and vaporizes itself when the massive processing power of the entire collective turns it into a blast that makes a warp core breach look like a firecracker.

My settings main magic system is based on extra dimensional energy using a casters mental framework as a base structure but technology can be directly adapted to harness it if the Borg got their hands on that tech let's just say they may be the ones on the end of being assimilated since currently the only faction with access to such gear has ai running all its facilities (which are based on human consciousnesses ripped out of the body by technology and lobotomized into loyal AI Contained in a crystal core (the crystal itself is technically for dimensional bleeding into the 3rd dimension mirroring the science of souls in my setting) and let's just say the moment they get attacked about ten other factions are getting speed dialled and one of those factions leaders is capable of moving at beyond infinite speed (moving in absolute zero time so he can be anywhere in the multiverse at a moment's notice) and he'd be interested in the foreign technology of the Borg enough to add them to his collection long enough to reverse engineer the tech and hook it into his mainframe and a doubt the borgs hive Mind will be able to fight a being with essentially infinite knowledge (the mainframe is a living being who's physical body is kept in a state of perpetual sedation at their own request because their unique power causes their brain to receive so much data that it effectively causes their entire nervous system to begin firing full force

*Please pardon me as I nerd out for a bit:*
The Borg need to find a fictional setting that runs on GURPS and uses its standard Magic system. *Why?*
    1) In _The Dresden Files_ setting and, to a lesser extent, in the _Harry Potter_ setting, magic doesn't play nice with modern technology.
    2) While you (usually) need the Magery trait to cast Spells, said Spells are handled as "Skills" e.g. you study them to learn them. Which is true in many settings, but...
*(Strap in, this is about to go long)*
...the way GURPS models this, as well as ways they've modeled hiveminds and cyborgs in other settings is quite _exploitable_ in GURPS. Normally, what balances out Spells in GURPS is that you...
    A) ...usually have to have a trait called "Magery"; in some settings this is rare, in others it is easy to get. I think the Borg can find a way. ;)
    B) ...have to perform necessary motions and/or say necessary words to cast the Spell. *However,* the higher your Skill level, the less of a ritual you need; sufficiently Skilled mages just seem to stare off into nothing for a split second.
    C) ...have to pay an Energy cost. *Again,* high skill can reduce or even eliminate this cost. There are ways to _share_ this cost as well.
    D) ...have to know all prerequisite Spells. *Example:* Ignite Fire => Create Fire => Shape Fire => Fire Ball => Explosive Fireball
*The Borg most likely have a trait called Modular Abilities,* as a side effect of their Collective nature. _I think:_ I should mention now, I lost my passion for Star Trek in the early 2000s, so I could be remembering wrong, or it could have changed.
If it does work this way, also know that Modular Abilities is a complex trait: what I'm about to suggest isn't even exploiting it to its fullest... but that also means it costs fewer Character Points to include for a character (GURPS has you build character by spending CP). *Anyway,* using Modular Abilities to model swappable Skills means individual drones _don't_ have to study magic. So long as they have Magery, they can download the needed Spells from the Borg's collective memory/database/whatever-it-is to use them! Also regular Skills as well, hence why Borg seem so omniproficient much of the time.
The drones likely - this is _all_ speculation - don't even have to stick to _specific_ Skill Levels for the Spells. Even if the database has the Skill Levels of master mages recorded in it, as much or as little of that knowledge can be stored in the drone's individual mind, to tailor its own Skill level. This can be valuable for "saving" memory space by learning prerequisite Spells to the minimum applicable level, while maxing out space for the Spell that matters most! Indeed, *that's part of the Collective's strength:* they collective mental resources can calculate an _optimal_ spell loadout for any given situation. If a prerequisite Spell is _also_ useful, no sense skimping on it! Oh, and some parts of the Collective can be assigned to constantly practice and expand the Collective's Spell database.
*What about needing Magery?* That comes to the _second major exploit._ Instead of focusing on being _faster_ for casting in battle or other circumstances where you need to act fast, when you have extra time, you can go for a "ritual" casting. Some Spells have such massive Energy costs, this is the only way to really cast them effectively. These kinds of Spells can also have crazy effects. Even some small spells are scalable; instead of the usual _small_ effects, you can throw high amounts of Energy at it to get similarly massive results! Non-mages can contribute a little Energy as well, but the main point I want to make is one of the Spell Colleges (collections of related Spells) is the Enchantment College. This is how you permanently imbue magical effects onto things... not just inanimate objects, but even living organisms, undead creations, animate things like golems, etc. So, not only could we potentially power-up even non-mage Borg members... there's an Enchantment called "Great Wish".
*It does about what you think it does: granting a "big" wish!* There are limits, but one of the things it can do is grant a level of Magery to a non-mage. It would take a lot of time, maybe even sacrificing the lives of many Borg drones (to reach the needed Energy requirements), but *this convoluted plan could eventually result in a fully magical Borg collective.* Though I'd recommend actually creating some Borg who are mages, some who are "Magic Resistant", and some that are just normal, magically neutral Borg. Because magic can be fickle and capricious.
    ...
The *scary* thing is that this mess popped into my head almost instantly. I spent too long typing it up, but seriously, this is how my mind works. Or doesn't work. >.>

Reading the comments, *I had another idea.*
A series of videos showing how John's advice helped baddies win and win bit. *Not just with the canon we know:* since the multiverse is a _thing_ for these videos, John can even explain why he tries - seemingly in vain - to help the Borg, the Yautja, etc. make better choices. *Because John's already helped them win **_big_** in other realities,* in ways that paid off for Villain Support.
    *Possible examples:*
The Yautja not only having the common sense to avoid _impossible_ hunts, but even showing discretion where victory is _improbable._ That list of targets *not* to hunt? It really is a list of targets not to hunt _yet._ Some version of the Yautja have already had those hunts, finished them successfully, and loved every minute of it. Ours just keep trying to tackle the final boss while they're still in the tutorial. XP
The Borg having assimilated everyone/thing they could in their own universe, and branching out into others. *What about the Q Continuum?* That's part of why they're branching out; to keep the Q entertained so they don't get bored and be all "Yeah, we should intervene after all..."
And my personal favorite: *Dragon Ball - A Cultivated Timeline.* While you still need something resembling a canon timeline, as otherwise your knowledge of the possible future suddenly becomes knowledge of an _impossible_ future, there's still so much that could be done working within the boundaries of what we have and know. General improvements to the Earth of Dragon Ball, so that it is still "backwards" enough that Freeze doesn't rush in to claim or destroy it _but_ so that Goku and company have to push themselves a little harder to rise to the top. Discourage _everyone_ from wastefully killing their foes, or at least, key foes...
*Think of the **-merchandising-** mercenary work Villain Support could use them all for!* Some of the video games for Dragon ball have hit on parts of this. The Red Ribbon Army operatives Goku killed? More "volunteers" for Dr. Gero's experiments. Commander Red is a joke, and yet not a total joke: *look at the organization he built!* Don't waste him on a Gero cyborg; once he loses to Goku, rescue him from the brink, put him into middle management with the promise of advancement - and Pym particles - to keep him loyal and hardworking for Villain Support. _Pym Particles?_ Once someone is _removed_ from the Dragon Ball multiverse, look for something controllable they'd want that Villain Support can supply. Commander Red is a short guy who wanted the Dragon Balls to wish himself _tall_ (not to take over the world, like his subordinates thought). While Pym Particles (from Marvel) are usually used to help one shrink, they can also be used to make someone grow... but the change doesn't seem to be permanent.

If he's loose on a Borg cube (and he's 5’6”) he's got Reducto, Stupefy, Levicorpus, Sectimsempera, Imperio and Crucio, that he's used in the books.
He can also transfigure objects and organisms, repair objects...
Let's say he's near the outer part of the cube and there are multiple Borg. Harry can cast a sticking charm on his shoes, cast Reducto on the hull then cast non-verbal Reparo after the Borg have been sucked into space.
