Was expecting an April fool's joke video.
This was much better! Fantastic.
The real April fools joke was the friends you made along the way. 😂
The patience of prop makers is always most evident in these kind of projects. So very many bits and pieces to layer, assess, glue up, reassess, and then fine-tune.
Love it! And kudos for yet another awesome guest in the shop. We all benefit from the knowledge sharing.
Thank you!
Heck yeah! Love some foam hair. My buddy Vash has been making some wild huge X-Men Comic Book style foam hair for cons and they always look amazing. So cool seeing this process.
That's so awesome!
Couple of tips.... You can do this with clear packing tape to make tracing the hair line easier. And you can add that to a wig block so that you have a permanent custom base for your wigs.
Great tips! Thanks for sharing.
Brilliant❤
Ahhh, love it when my friends get together. Kristy's Link was soooo perfect! That foam hair especially!
Thanks Eric!
I LOVE FOAM WIGS!!! I love the way foam wigs capture cartoon styles!!!! They also feel more approachable than fiber wigs for me personally at least
Definitely a great approach if you’re already comfortable with foam.
Looks pretty amazing! I can see this being most effective with Manga/Anime hair that is already fairly geometric in nature.
Yeah, totally!
More please! Foam hair is underdeveloped art.
It's so hard to find info or references at the moment, I'm so glad it's starting to pick up more and more
Happy to spread the word.
Wow! The process is pretty amazing. I would imagine the foam hair saved Kristy some prep time for ECCC. We saw a lot of cosplayers constantly adjusting their hair during the event.
Yeah that’s a huge upside to a foam wig.
"That's where I learned to make a wig cap."
This is what I love about sharing knowledge. Bill and Britt teach their ways, and then a student creates a new variation and comes back and teaches it to Bill and Britt (and us)
It's the CIRCLE OF LIIIIIIFE!
Pretty magical, yeah?
Looks good. I bet a super Saiyan's hair would also be great in foam.
Oh totally!
I don't think Bill managed to hide his smile well enough to look real Volverine, but it looks like they had a lot of fun with it! ;)
Yeah I just don’t have it in me to be that grumpy. 😂
William Jakespeare did an Clone Wars ObiWan Kenobi foam hair piece about two years ago. Complete with foam beard.
It was sooo cool! I it and talked to him at Dragon Con about it.
ua-cam.com/video/vNtDJ1DaU54/v-deo.htmlsi=kmV_qpuInNyZNZRQ Such an awesome build! Seeing him drink water, at Dragon Con, while wearing the foam beard was amazing :D
@@punishedpropsthanks for the link!!!
This is AWESOME! I never would have guessed that it was made of individual strands of foam 😮 both wigs look amazing and I will definitely be saving this for future reference 👌
It broke our brains when we saw Kristy's wig in person. We were like, how???
I mean it makes sense the Wolverine would have a Mullet, he is Canadian after all :D
He slays on the ice :D
I thought for sure it was carved but the foam strands is such a good idea! And seems like it would be especially good for getting very thick, smooth hair like Logan’s!
Less dust this way too. 😄
That would be absolutely ideal for a Borderlands cosplay!
100%!
Let's see you do Johnny Bravo's quiff!
Oh that’s a great idea!
That cut at 26:30 I audibly gasped at how good it looked. Amazing work.
Thank you so much! 😄
@14:40 I got strong Merlin from Excaliber vibes with that skullcap. Could be a fun adventure in chrome.
If memory serves me correctly @Odinmakes made a Sayan foam wig a year or two ago
He did! ua-cam.com/video/Zyk-Wix-GWw/v-deo.htmlsi=Kaq-RJjsMtQ1FXeb
Awesome Make !! thanks for posting !
This is pretty perfect for a cloud strife cosplay
Oh absolutely!
Very nice! Makes me want to remake my All Might wig like this, and really paint it in that bold, comic style
That would be spectacular!
Nice you got Hugh Jackman to come in for a comparison at the end there. I was thinking some sort of reflective blue paints might helps to sell the blue highlights against the black so it feels more lifelike in normal light but still comic booklike.
Ooh that’s a fun idea!
This is next-level. It solves so many problems at once and looks fantastic. You could even go super hard with the shading if you're doing a more cell-shaded costume style and makeup, and it would look incredible. Great idea and great job!
Thanks so much!
Love this!
This is awesome, will definitely try something like this 😊
I've been doing foam wigs for like 4 years and this is very spot on!
Awesome! =)
This is perfect timing for me! I'm planning to cosplay Cody from "It Takes Two" soon and I hope to make the leaf "hair" as an EVA foam helmet.
That's awesome! So glad we could help inspire.
Oh snap! Something new to experiment with! Thanks, guys!
Have fun! Be safe!
Though I’m not making a foam wig, I am making a foam wig cap, and I am definitely getting some of that CosBond!
Fantastic!
That wink at the end. 😂
That wink was for Jean Gray. 😂
Such a cool idea! Never even thought about foam used for hair. And loving that Type O Negative-ish riff at the end of the video!!! 🤘🏻
Heck yeah! 😁
I can see adding 40mm computer fans and hiding the power supply in there, as well as using traditional wig elements to look more hair-like and getting the advantages of both materials. The cool part, the really cool part, is the less perfect you fix the hair the better it can look!
Honestly, if I saw a high-production-value X-Men movie with comic hair made this way, I wouldn't be mad.
Oh yeah the options are limitless. Making flaming hair with LEDs would be really cool.
i learned a lot from you guys!! Thank you so much!!
Turned out amazing
Thank you!
Cool CosBond reinforcement tip.
It worked great!
This is so delicate and so many strands. Thanks so much!f
You’re welcome!
That looks incredible! Great work!
Thank you!
i like it when you guys happen to match my current project with your new video, heh; it's like parallel playing with the same goal :)
That’s perfect!
I suggest people buy Bills books if youre serious about making props, armors out of foam...lots of great tips
Thanks! 😄
At first i thought this was an April Fools because, who would spend all that time gluing on foam spaghetti? But it turned out impressive!
Ha! Thanks. 😄
Looked better than I thought it would. Maybe air brush with a subtler blue might have looked better for the highlights 🤷🏻♂️ still effective though
this is sooooo coooool
Thanks!
I always wondered how Wolverine's arrector pili muscles made his hair into that shape? Turns out the secret is contact cement!!!
Life hack! 😂
This is cool. I've been wanting to do Beast from X-Men
Perfect! We ♥️ Beast.
@punishedprops One of my best friends had a desire to do Wolverine. Since Wolverine and Beast were like best friends, it only seemed logical for me to do Beast at some point.
Very cool
Thanks!
that's genius! also: is the angry bumble bee gone? (haven't watched it all yet - but only a normal one was shown so far)
Oh man now I need to go make Goku hair for my son 😂😍!!!
This would be great for Saiyans.
Reminds me of the foam wig Toyajax made for Gaige. Epic 😎
Yes! Such a great option for a lot of Borderlands characters.
14:12 Ming the Merciless cosplay!!! Hail Ming! 🤣
Excellent work! God bless you and yours! Praying for you! Jesus loves you!
During covid I cut real hair of a good friend of mine (she had long hair) with household scissors like @28:45. When she was at a professional hairdresser a year later, she was asked "Who comitted this crime" 😅
I made a Vegeta wig over a year ago. I'm tempted to redo it using foam wefts
This is a great technique for DBZ style hair.
This is great. I think the longest part would be cutting all the 'hair' pieces.
Thanks!
UPDATE: It's called a "pattern notcher" if anyone else was curious. Found one on Temu for cheap.
OP:
Can you please tell me where to find the oblong shaped hole puncher you use to punch out registration marks? (see around 11:43 in the video)
Glad you found the tool! The link to the tools we use are the in the description.
I REALLY wanna do this for Cloud (Final Fantasy 7) and Sora (Kingdom Hearts 3). I HATE having to redo those wigs lol I also can never get Cloud all that accurate, so having an accurate one I never have to style again, would be a dream lol
This would be awesome for Cloud.
@@punishedprops I'm gonna try and see what I come up with. Possibly make my own video for it.
Very cool - the choice of source material is most awesome... But a question - I have made helmets in the past and find that they are great at insulating your bonce.
Are there any ways to help vent the heat away or is the discomfort a part of the cosplay experience?
Yeah, foam directly against the skin gets warm fast. For helmets, we scale the pattern up so there's an air gap between the head and inside of the helmet. If a construction helmet base (amzn.to/43EKcYR) fits for support, awesome! If not, we use some squishy, foam blocks in strategic areas to keep the helmet in place and still allow air flow. If the design allows room for a fan (amzn.to/49ynzXH) it helps with the heat so much.
This was so cool to watch! Is there perhaps an alternative to the Cosbond to reinforcing the seams on the inside? I struggle with wig working and love workign with foam, so this was a fantastic video to watch!
I imagine strips of non-stretchy fabric glued over the seams would have a similar effect. Anything that relieves the stress pulling on the foam seams and doesn't add too much interior thickness.
That turned out great. I wonder what Bill's going to cosplay as next? 🤔
Hmmmm…
@@punishedprops yeah idk, I thought that was funnier when I typed it, thought it might go somewhere with the whole history of Logan clones, but now I got nothin'.
I’ve just realized how James from Hacksmith is just a redhead Wolverine.
HA! You're right! =)
What if you added foam clay , would that be beneficial, to get more organic shapes 🤔
I think you could do a lot of neat things with foam clay and foam hair.
My first thought is, "Is this real or a prank?" because of the date, but it didn't take long to tell it was a real video.
We’re always keeping you on your toes.
@@punishedprops It's a great video. I want to try it.
Does anyone know the answer. Where did Doran's T-Shirt come from?
One of our friends sent the shirt from Tasmania! :) It says "Australian Research & Space Exploration" on it. Hope that helps!
So are you trying to say when it comes to foam wigs. Kristy is the best she is at what she does, Bub?
You nailed it! 😂
Really curious how laser cutting the strands would work; they're so thin I could see it making the very crispy.
I think they would melt/curl if you tried to cut pieces that thin.
@@punishedpropshonestly depending on the effect that may work even better for accent hair/ahoge like you did on the front.
Going to see if I can convince my local hacker lab to let me test it out at some point.
the shape can also work for almight
Absolutely!
14:37 You could make that a Ming the Merciless helmet
How do you make or buy the Eva foam hair strands ?
We cut strands from 2mm foam: ua-cam.com/video/X1wRfWvB7Ys/v-deo.htmlsi=AVNFXgrgYlpAF-5L&t=1027
I am so happily distracted by the music.
After pattern is glued and put on your head some reason I thought ming the mersaless
April fool, it was Bill's *real* hair all along!
Haha! 😂
Help! I've watched so many of your videos (and even bought the maker t-shirt!) but I can't remember which one I need to revisit. You showed a piece of software that will take a 3d model surface and convert it to a lay-flat pattern. Can you give me a prompt please?
In the past we've used Pepakura Designer: www.punishedprops.com/2015/04/20/pepakura/
Blender also has a built-in plugin for papercraft: ua-cam.com/video/W-AiXy76uCI/v-deo.htmlsi=5dTUPmvvXFXGcGs0
Make another shell and you can be Merlin from Excalibur
How are people just glossing by the amazing Aquabats reference! Kids these days!
Heck yeah buddy! You’re super rad. 😄
I can imagine someone out there gonna make an insane Goku Super Saiyan 3 hair...
Definitely.
6:42 Well YOUR head might be symmetrical...
lawd i'm a dumbass how have i not thought of this myself
More Ace Ventura than Wolverene.
Just sayin'
I’m definitely channeling the “spears in the legs” scene from AV2.
Ancient Aliens??!!
Haa! 😂
That's dbz all over it
Totally!
I’ve noticed you guys have changed the naming format of your videos. Do you still include traditional key words in UA-cam studio? Like adding something similar to a traditional title in the form of keywords. I feel like traditional titles are easier to search for, but I won’t pretend that I know better than you! That would be silly. I’m just curious, is all:)!
We still add tags to all of our videos with relevant search terms.
