- Traveling westbound on the new span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge near Annapolis, Maryland.
Ground was broken on the new span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in 1969 and was ultimately opened in 1973, despite having been date stamped as 1972. The new span carries three of the Bay Bridge's five lanes. Most of the bridge utilizes girder-and-pier and deck-truss designs, with a through-truss span and iconic suspension span at the center of the bridge.
Being four miles long, 186 feet high at its tallest point, subject to crosswinds, and having no shoulders, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is known by some as "America's Scariest Bridge", so much so that Maryland Transportation Authority has contracts with private companies to provide transportation services upon request. The new span is considered by some to be even scarier than the original span because the left-most lane of the bridge is often reversed during rush-hour, resulting in two-way traffic on the bridge. In addition, most of the new span uses true "guard rails" (metal fences) rather than solid parapet walls that most overpasses today use. Only on the through-truss and suspension spans are concrete parapet walls actually found. This use of transparent guard rails gives drivers a vivid view of the water they're driving over.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is not to be confused with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which connects the DelMarVa peninsula to mainland Virginia.

I enjoyed going over this bridge. I live in an area where there are many bridges, Hampton Virginia. I am used to having to cross them. This is not scary. If anyone reading this has driven the old James River Bridge, between Newport News and Isle Of Wight County, that was a very scary ride.
Driving across this bridge was not so bad. The slope was very small due to the length of the bridge. I just don’t understand why higher guard rails were not built in it.
No way on earth would I drive or ride on this bridge I live in a state that dies t have these insane monsters.

They need to have signs letting you know this bridge is coming lol my anxiety was on a 1000 when I was approaching this bridge
There’s literally multiple signs on the highway saying “Bay Bridge”. Good god.
They do on both ends. The signs clearly say ‘Bay Bridge’
Sending prayers and hugs to his family members. It's never easy to accept something like this happening, but at the very least they have closure. 😔
That bridge seriously needs updating and more saftey/security measures. Those rails are a joke.

Is the left lane HOV?
As far as I know, the left lane is not a HOV lane. Although it is often reversed during rush-hour, I don't believe it ever has restrictions placed on it.
It's the reversible "contraflow" (a.k.a. "suicide") lane.
It's a reversible lane - in the summer time they run "two-way" traffic on the West bound lane / span. It's some scary shit...

@@Mapmaker1559 - So they hadn't completed all the repairs by then.
@@thespeez Well, there are ongoing minor repairs that are still being made, but there was massive repair to the right lane that had that lane closed for a while. It reopened just a couple days before this was filmed.
I heard that the bridge race didn't happen due to the right lane on Westbound span having to be re decked due to ware and tear that trucks produced. Also on a video on rebillatation on bay bridge in Annapolis Maryland you can see in couple of spots you can see down to the water.

4:30 you see a sign weight station so yea semis pass by I am a truck driver but I'm from Texas I don't go far East to Maryland
