The new bridge will be just like the Sunshine Skyway bridge in Tampa. It won’t have the beautiful views like the Skyway bridge, but it will be a much better bridge. This bridge was named after Francis Scott Key because the British ship he was on was located in this location when Fort McHenry was being bombarded and where he came up with the lyrics for the National Anthem.
9:10 The Sunshine Skyway- also a replacement span for an old steel cantilever bridge that was struck by a (much smaller) cargo vessel around 1980. I remember the old one being scary to a little kid.
The Gordie Howe bridge is 1.5 miles long, including the half mile center span. With the center span construction completed, the Gordie Howe bridge is now officially a border crossing with customs of both countries on site, (currently screening bridge employees & officials). Note, with the Gordie Howe bridge, NO structural supports are in the water to interfere with (or vulnerable to) shipping vessel traffic. Gordie Howe bridge is also six lanes wide (plus shoulders), plus a dedicated bicycle/pedestrian lane. The Gordie Howe bridge project cost $6.4 billion (CAD), up from the original $5.7 billion (CAD) estimated prior to the COVID pandemic. The Gordie Howe's bridge support towers stand 720 ft high, and their footings are about 725 ft deep. The bridge is designed to last for about 125 years, becoming the longest cable stayed bridge in North America. Expecting to be open in September 2025, construction began in 2018. Tolls will be paid on the Canadian side, since Canada is footing the bill for the entire bridge project, which include both ports of entry, approaches to the bridge from the ports, and ramps to their respective ports from either I-75 or 401 highways. However, bicyclists & pedestrians may cross toll-free, but don't forget your proper ID or passport.
I was listening to After Hours on what is now Infinity Sports Network, then known as CBS Sports Radio when the host Amy Lawrence brought it to us listener's attention about an hour or two after it collapsed. That was scary.

It's going to be a cable-stayed bridge because it is the design that can be built the fastest. I had predicted that other designs would either take took long to build or would not be reasonably safe in another collision.
As long as they keep the same name, i don't care what type of bridge they build. That name is part of Baltimore/Maryland history and even the nation's history.
Have family that live right around the river bend from this. You could see it in fall when leaves fall. They had debris washing up into their back yard
it would cost about $220 mill to build a tunnel between the span where the FSK Bridge is ( give or take ) , this is taking into consideration that it costs $30 mill per mile in chicago by the Boreing Company - to replace the bridge is about 2 billion dollars, they claimed $1.7 to 1.9 but we all know costs will over run... we are going to replace the bridge, reason for this is Hazzard Trucks, cannot go in a tunnel, BUT, if a Tunnel and a Bridge were built, you would have a backup so that the whole system is not completely shut down for years or months and would be a drop in the bucket to add to the system, so for the next 3 to 4 years this area will be under construction... if there was a tunnel, a code variance with a Manned 24/7 fire station at either end could have used a tunnel in the short term and act as a backup
I want to know why the bridge was able to be struck by the ship. Such a critical structure continually subject to dangerous traffic should have had more substantial protection from a predictable disaster.
I don't understand how Baltimore city had anything to do with it Sea girt is actually in Baltimore county. And the bridge goes from Baltimore county to Anne Arundel county
Hazardous cargo is not permitted to go through tunnels probably because crashes with hazardous cargo in tunnels would be much more dangerous to clean up than similar crashes on bridges, making bridges necessary for those kinds of loads. Some hazardous loads could also damage a tunnel like explosives, while a bridge would be able to avoid much of that damage should an explosive load detonate. Tunnels therefore cannot replace bridges for all loads that need to be transported, so bridges are still necessary.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, the Verrazano, the Golden Gate, those are examples of mega bridges. This one was a two laner and fairly big, but a “MEGA”? AW, COME ON!
I guess getting a functional and efficient bridge is the priority here, but I really hate those "sailboat" style bridges. They are just so ugly and generic. Someone needs to come up with a different design that has similar efficiency.
A misleading headline! This is not primarily about "effort to relace" It is mostly chronology of crash & aftermath. Only last +/-90 seconds refer at all to replacement. Bugger off.
@@galewinds7696I think they wanted to know if they were union members. Which isn't really relevant in this case, as union or not, it would not have changed their fates. Unions exist to protect you against your boss, not giant cargo ships coming straight for you
It’s hard to not be a “theorist” with this one. Out of all the things I’ve witnessed and dealt, this left me speechless more than anything. I’m sorry this just doesn’t happen. All the bridges in the northeast are built poorly, compared to the ones in Charleston, outside of Savannah, and the one in Tampa. It’s difficult to explain if you haven’t seen the bridges in Baltimore/Philadelphia etc, compared to other areas of the country.
OKS !!!! Have made comments on other channels that the ""KEY bridge was a ""TOLL" bridge from day 1 when it opened in '75 ,, so where's the $$$$$ for maintaining & replacing gone ??? GOOD "OL" AMERICAN GREED!!! 😡🤬
That’s like saying you’ve gotten paid $100k a year since 1975, why don’t you have $1,000,000+ saved up. The operating cost is massive for these things and the routine maintenance throughout the years likely depleted funds continuously
@@GingerO762 OKS !!! How about the raise in tolls over the years & very little done to keep the bridge repaired & protected !! The bigger question now is ::: What about the ""BAY "" bridge & it's protection ????
The only actual solution I can see is to tunnel under the shipping channel, so that there is no bridge there in the first place. Like the bridge-tunnels in the Norfolk, VA, USA area. My solution would be a tunnel as on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel and I-664 Bridge-Tunnel. No bridge over the shipping channel that can be hit by ships or bombed during war. The I-695 approach tunnel portal causeways are already in place, for the original design of a 6,200 foot long tunnel.
Another ship will just hit it anyway. Boat pilots need to be trained properly and tested for drugs on a regular basis..and tested for drugs and alcohol if theyre involved in an accident.

Yep. And like that bridge this one did not have nearly good enough pier protection.

Remember the Miami pedestrian bridge collapse that killed six people five years ago? Construction of the replacement may start one of these days..
Very well done - great research / script

Hopefully the new bridge will accomodate the largest cargo vessels sailing today.

there no lik in description for the cable bridge,, were is it
The routing over the bridge was I-695, not MD 695. Otherwise, a good video.
