Brilliant; almost like being in the room with you, Bernard. Lots of good reminders of why I double probably only a tenth of the time I should. See you again on Wednesday.
Hi, my Bridge partner rang me to tell me about your UA-cam Bridge seminars. Thoroughly enjoyed lesson. Hopefully, when our Club eventually reopens, my partner and I will be using your tips! Looking forward to next lesson. And finding out how to play with real people online.
Yes! I have deliberately aimed for just under 30 minutes content, so that I can be comfortable with the pace, rather than be worried about the 40 minute cut off!
Bernard, very well done on this first video. Very good content, in a direct and engaging style. Just wondering why you've not enabled "Live chat replay"? Might help with context and discovery if you do.
If you bid a spade rather than a club, when opening with 12 points, and partner bids 2d (and you only have two of them) what is the rebid? Because a bid of 2 clubs would show 5 spades, and you only have 4.
Great seminar. Thanks very much. A question, if I may. I have been taught to jump a level when responding to partner's double with 8+ points. You didn't apply this at all with this morning's hands, so is it just wrong or are there circumstances when it is applicable?
My question is quite a simple one. Is there any software apart from Bridge Baron which would allow me to play bridge with my partner against the computer? BB 29 does not work on a mac!
Thanks Bernard, just one query, I thought that a 2NT rebid over a reverse was non-forcing showing a weak hand or does it depend on partner agreement. Keep up the good work
Bernard please forgive me for the stupid question, if you bid two clubs over one diamond, then you must have 9-10pts so 2NT over two spades must be forcing
Bernard Magee Bridge Yes thanks expect I was too early bbc iplayer wont let you get something if your too quick to access it so thats what I assumed was happening🤔

I enjoyed my first seminar this morning. I saw that 4 friends playing online was possible and I would love to do this! Can you tell me how? Dr Eric Mallett
One place is BBO (Bridge Base Online) - all four players create an account (free of charge) and then go online together. One can start a new table and the others join them. There are many other sites available too
Hi Bernard, Thank you very much, I enjoyed it a lot this morning. I would have bid 3NT on that hand... I understand 2NT rebid after 2 level response over opener’s reverse is forcing, asking partner to describe his hand... This was new for me. Looking forward to the next one! Hiroko ( I hope you remember me! Tennis.)
Hi Hiroko Nice to hear from you. Have not been playing much tennis since my son was born. Alfie is 2 and a bit now, but would like to get back to it eventually. Bernard
Great to hear about Mr. Bridge junior! You won’t believe it, but golf has become my new passion and tennis was getting less and less. For the time being though, online Bridge would be my main activity. I am so glad that I picked up Bridge - great game.
Yes, if not playing a 2/1 system, then a reverse is forcing in this situation as you imply your bid is made without an intervening opponent bid. If an opponent had bid in front of you, your hand can be weaker to compete at the 2 level.

Thanks for excellent seminar Bernard. My classes were watching and know how useful a double is! With regard to the quiz, going past your 4 card major to bid your 5 card minor works well if your partner opened strong and opponents don't interfere. But if partner had a basic opening hand, and opps come in, you can end up having to show your hearts at the 3 or even 4 level. Fine if partner has 4 - but then it would have been better for you to bid hearts at 1 level anyway, so partner can use LTC on their rebid. But if partner has not got 4 you have ended up too high without a fit. And as you can't know partner's strength when they open, I think it is safer to always show your four card major. There are more hands that will end up in part score or game than in a slam! See you Wednesday
The key here is, that partscores are not in the equation: you have 13 points opposite an opening hand. Furthermore, if it does become a competitive deal you would prefer to have shown your longest suit first. If spades do come in to the auction from the opposition then you have a double available from both sides of the table as a competitive option. Generally with strong hands you do best to bid as naturally as possible.
Thanks for the seminar. It was great to see you again. Would you explain how it is possible to play bridge with friends on the computer. I am not very technically minded so would like advice. Will definately be watching on Wednesday.
As a number of people have enquired (I gave an answer to a similar question above), but I will try to include an answer in the next video on Wednesday too
Very interesting but above my head. Are you going to do sessions for beginners who are in The middle of the first year of bridge or can you recommend videos for that level? Thanks
Thanks for you comment Phena, I will try to include some easier stuff. The particular seminar was certainly taking bidding a step further from the basic.

If you were playing teams and you were in the last seat, would you still "Add a King" and consider bidding if the opponents had stopped at the 2 level?
You point out logical solutions with incredible mastery Bernard ! Look forward to the next Wed
Thank you very much, very enjoyable as are your seminars on your weekend breaks. Look forward to more
Super seminar - many good ideas. We'll be back on Wednesday
Great seminar. Thanks
Getting to 4K subscribers so quickly is really good.

Thanks for your reply Bernard. It is very interesting even if a little advanced so I’ll keep tuned In. Regards,
Thank you so much, what better way to spend Lockdown ! Loving it.
Nice one Bernard. Well done. You didn’t seem at all nervous and looking forward to more
Wonderful idea
Super ,super seminar Barnard . 👍from Hayat sultan Oman
Bernard thanks very much, this was very professionally put together and full of great content. Highly recommended.
Just tuned in for first time. Session was brilliant! and very informative, not to mention fun!!

Would like to know about playing Bridge with friends on the internet
aiming to mention this on Wednesday
Thank you so much for the seminar. Lots to learn :>).
Looking forward to your next seminar this morning. Please can you go a little slower than on Monday.
Yes!
I have deliberately aimed for just under 30 minutes content, so that I can be comfortable with the pace, rather than be worried about the 40 minute cut off!
Thank you very much. Very comprehensible. How many hcp do you need for responder reverse. With a good shape 12?

never heard of it, but will look in to it. My wife copied the whole chat for me, but thanks for the information
Is it possible to have a list of the lessons by Bernard Magee on the UA-cam so that we can go back to the ones we have missed....many thanks

You are planning to rebid notrumps to show your balanced hand and 15-17 points.
With a balanced hand you should never plan to bid two suits.
Thanks
Great seminar. Thanks very much. A question, if I may. I have been taught to jump a level when responding to partner's double with 8+ points. You didn't apply this at all with this morning's hands, so is it just wrong or are there circumstances when it is applicable?
no clues, but responding to doubles is coming up on Wednesday as well as of course on the quiz hand that I left you with!
My question is quite a simple one. Is there any software apart from Bridge Baron which would allow me to play bridge with my partner against the computer? BB 29 does not work on a mac!
good question - i will research
@@BernardMageeBridge Thanks!
Thank you. Same time Wednesday?
Yes!
Thanks Bernard, just one query, I thought that a 2NT rebid over a reverse was non-forcing showing a weak hand or does it depend on partner agreement. Keep up the good work
After a 1-level response you would be correct, but after a 2-level response (10+) then the reverse is forcing to game
Thanks for the reply Bernard
Bernard please forgive me for the stupid question, if you bid two clubs over one diamond, then you must have 9-10pts so 2NT over two spades must be forcing
I found BridgeBase Online a little unintuitive at first, so I recorded my first steps, as a layman's introduction here:-

Very good. Some very familiar situations covered.

Typical Bernard, thought provoking explanations re Bidding rational. Options discussed and decisions left to you. Thank you.
