Quiz 5, 2 questions: 1. Why overlook W first response of 1S? Surely you must always seek that major fit at every opportunity. 2. I was taught that a 2-level response promises 10 points minimum, or a good 9.
Thanks for these Bernard. A great addition to the DVD set that I can highly recommend to everyone. I had no idea Mr Bridge is your Dad - and hope his health soon stops being a concern.
Regarding No Trump rebids, what do you think of Ron Klinger's 1 No Trump rebid being 15-18 pts then using 2 Clubs as Checkback?. This fits in well with a system using a 2NT opening bid of 19-20 points. On the hand you gave as an example, a 2NT opening would work very well as the final contract would still be 4 Spades but played with the strong hand concealed as the declarer.
But that wastes the 2NT rebid option. 15-18 is an uncomfortably wide range. With most partners I play 1NT as 15-17. With one partner we play 2NT as 19-20 and that leaves us the space to do 1NT rebids as 15-16 and 2NT rebids as 17-18. Note that Bernard does not like 2 level openings on 19 points.
Bernard, you were wondering where the 15/16 ,1NT rebid and 16/17 , 2NT bid came from and recommended we adjust to the points in your presentation. The EBU produce a bidding system file www.ebu.co.uk/documents/laws-and-ethics/convention-cards/Modern%20Acolv2.pdf and just wanted to show you what they say on the topic in section 1.2.
